Um ok but I don’t recall my virginity having 16 GB of memory with all my contacts, music, photos, calendars, and apps or costing over $200.

my phone is an expensive and important material object and not a useless social construct put in place to shame and commodify women

Plus I remember where I lost my virginity.

Famed Philosopher Accused Of Plagiarizing White Separatist Journal

firehose

'In a statement emailed to NPR, Žižek wrote that he had been sent the words by a friend who said he was free to use them and that he did not realize the friend had in turn borrowed words from Hornbeck. Žižek added, "As any reader can quickly establish, the problematic passages are purely informative, a report on another's theory for which I have no affinity whatsoever; all I do after this brief resume is quickly dismiss Macdonald's theory as a new chapter in the long process of the destruction of Reason. In no way can I thus be accused of plagiarizing another's line of thought, of 'stealing ideas.' I nonetheless deeply regret the incident."

NPR asked Žižek whether he considered it acceptable to borrow, even with permission, the words of a friend without citing the source. Žižek responded: "My friend not only agreed, he wrote those words for my use! Plus they are a resume of a book, not any creative development of ideas. So I really don't see a problem here."

In a third email, he added, "I find it difficult to consider plagiarism using a brief resume of a book written by a friend FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF ME USING IT. If this is plagiarism, then quite a few academics I know are plagiarists." Asked whether his other published work also contains passages written by friends or assistants, he responded, "NO, plus I NEVER in my life got or used a research assistant or ANY kind of paid academic help!"'

Marxist philosopher Slavoj Žižek — who is one of the world's most prominent living public intellectuals — has been accused of plagiarizing from the white separatist magazine "American Renaissance."

Chris Pratt Was Turned Down For The Roles of James Kirk And Jake Sully

Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't come out until next month, but we're already pretty sure that Chris Pratt is our new space-opera hotness. And if things had turned out differently, he could have starred in Star Trek. Or Avatar.

TV Review: Get Your War On’s David Rees wants to teach you fun but useless things on his new TV show

by Josh Modell
firehose

David Rees beat

David Rees found a bit of fame by adding talk bubbles to clip art, first with My New Filing Technique Is Unstoppable and My New Fighting Technique Is Unstoppable and then, more notably, with Get Your War On. That comic strip, a blunt, frequently hilarious savaging of U.S. politics post-9/11, ran until the day George W. Bush left office. (That was by design.)

After it ended, Rees did some writing for Huffington Post and his own blog, and started an artisanal pencil-sharpening service—a flight of fancy that speaks pretty sharply to his personality. He’s interested in details, and he wants to have a fun time getting at them. Which leads pretty directly to Going Deep With David Rees, his new show for the National Geographic Channel.

In each episode, Rees will dive into the particulars of how to do something practical really, really well—unnecessarily well ...

46 oz. Can of Hi-C Ecto Cooler Shows Up on eBay, Sadly Cost Prohibitive - Can you really put a price on nostalgia? This guy sure thinks so.

by Glen Tickle
firehose

US $2,433.00

Ecto Cooler

Oh, eBay, what treasures you have. First, a $1,000 Crumbs cupcake, and now a ridiculously priced, decades-old can of Ecto Cooler. Truly you are one of the Internet’s greatest wonders.

User petergriffen404 is selling this… classic I guess?… can of the famous beverage tie-in to the Ghostbusters franchise for a meer $2,433. Ecto Cooler is essentially liquid nostalgia that we all remember fondly. Some of us have even gone down weird Internet rabbitholes trying to find it, or attempted to recreate it with dubious recipes found online.

The seller claims it’s authentic, but even so, I doubt it’s actually something you’d want to drink after 20+ years. Here’s the description from the listing:

One of the greatest treasures you may possibly ever find on ebay!
An unopened can of the beloved Ecto Cooler 46 FL OZ.

For the Ultimate fan or maybe just someone who really wants to have a 20+ year flashback.

I am not quite sure of the date it was produced but the copyright on the label is 1986 . Top of can reads K3160 CT293 5c DEPOSIT ME

There are a few light tears on label and some light staining as seen. Also the can is slightly bent as seen.

Feel free to ask any questions and make any offer.

The auction ends Jul 19, 2014 18:00:31 PD if you’re interested in dropping a lot of cash on a childhood memory.

With the 30th Anniversary re-release of Ghostbusters in theaters this summer, maybe now’s a good time for Hi-C to bring back the nectar of the 80′s.

Review: A Brony Tale - We're still not quite in Equestria, friends.

by Carolyn Cox
firehose

'it raises alarm bells for me that A Brony’s Tale is so clearly subjective in what parts of the fandom’s history it chooses to scrutinize–there’s no mention of Molestia, reported con harassment, or even the possibly poor-taste porn released earlier this year. The doc even manages to underscore its one-sidedness, focusing more on male bronies’ assertions of harmlessness than Ball’s confession that she had a stalker.'

abronytale

As someone who works for the Internet, it’s been impossible to escape bronies and their accompanying controversies. Adult lovers of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic have one of the most paradoxical reputations of any fandom out there, and I hoped A Brony Tale, the second documentary on the growing phenomenon, would shed light on why a group known for flouting traditional gender roles also has such a reputation for misogyny. Unfortunately, potential pegasisters and misters might need to look elsewhere for a comprehensive look at the movement’s past: Tale educated me, but I can’t help but feel the history I learned was a little selective.

For a movie about a mostly-male phenomenon, Brent Hodge’s Morgan Spurlock-produced documentary focuses a surprising amount on a woman–Ashleigh Ball, the voice actor and musician who brings Rainbow Dash and Applejack to life on the show. Ball is only vaguely familiar with the brony movement, and Tale follows her and a variety of notable bronies as she decides whether or not to accept an invitation to appear at Bronycon in NYC.

Ball’s career as a voice over artist is almost as interesting as the brony community itself, so it’s not surprising that the documentary often feels conflicted about which to focus on more. She’s charming, but in many ways there’s only a tenuous link between Ball and the community Tale purports to explore, so scenes of the actress’ camping trips or musical performances just feel distracting, especially considering how compelling the documentary’s other subjects are. From the beautiful music of MandoPony to the brony club of Northwestern University, the segment of bronydom depicted in the doc is creative, multicultural, and optimistic–even when, as is the heartbreaking case with Iraqi war vet Bryan Mishki, life hasn’t afforded them a lot to be optimistic about.

As an outsider of the movement just looking for more insight, A Brony’s Tale is a great resource if you’re  interested in the fandom’s demographics, origins or amazing art. But as someone with only a cursory prior knowledge of bronies, even I know they have another, less positive reputation, one which isn’t entirely undeserved–as Ball puts it, “the pervert alarm goes off.”

One of the more well-known blights on the brony rep is Princess Molestia, a “raging nymphomaniac” parody blog that was shut down by Hasbro in January this year. Not only was the blog’s content questionable, its take-down also prompted alleged online abuse of Tumblr user pinkiepony, who says she alerted Hasbro because she felt “the fandom was being overrun by men who don’t respect women.” Any sprawling fandom will have its MRA members, but it raises alarm bells for me that A Brony’s Tale is so clearly subjective in what parts of the fandom’s history it chooses to scrutinize–there’s no mention of Molestia, reported con harassment, or even the possibly poor-taste porn released earlier this year. The doc even manages to underscore its one-sidedness, focusing more on male bronies’ assertions of harmlessness than Ball’s confession that she had a stalker.

Near the end of the documentary, Dusty Rhoades, the “world’s manliest brony” pleads with outsiders to “give bronies the benefit of the doubt,” saying  “they’re all good people, and not [...] deviant.” Although A Brony’s Tale provides fascinating insight into people whose lives have (sometimes literally) been saved by Friendship Is Magic, the documentary would need to be 20% cooler and way more objective before I would be willing to grant a request of that magnitude.
