mymodernmet: 24-year-old photographer Asher Svidensky recently...

mymodernmet:

24-year-old photographer Asher Svidensky recently traveled to west Mongolia with the intention of documenting the lives of traditional Kazakh eagle hunters, people who tame eagles for the purpose of hunting smaller animals.

With the traditions typically laying in the hands of the boys and the men, the biggest surprise throughout the journey was Svidensky’s discovery of a young eagle huntress, 13-year-old Ashol Pan, the daughter of an experienced eagle hunter. These stunning photographs symbolize the potential future of the eagle hunting tradition as it expands beyond a male-only practice.

Guys!

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, if you want dragons to eat or if you’re interested in doing the world a great cultural service, please read on!

The Icelandic goat is in serious risk of extinction. A breed brought to Iceland by the Vikings more than a thousand years ago is now almost died out, with less than 900 animals left on Earth. Almost 400 of them live at Háafell Farm, and unless they raise money by the end of autumn, the farm will be lost and the goats will be sent to the slaughterhouses.

They need your help!

Please consider donating to their indiegogo campaign, share their facebook page or use the tag #savethegoats on twitter!

Apart from doing the great cultural service of keeping this ancient breed alive, the farm of Háafell also offers their own goat milk cheese and ice cream, a variety of soaps and creams made from sheep tallow and wild Icelandic plants, and Icelandic handcrafts.

The goats from Háafell can be seen in Game of Thrones, as they are the goats the dragon Drogon burns and eats in episode 6 of season 4.

Please share and consider donating to keep this ancient and unique breed alive!

Persephone turning Ascalaphus into an Owl

Son of Acheron (the river of pain) and Orphne (an underworld nymph), Askalaphos was the orchardist of Hades. He told the other gods that Persephone had eaten a pomegranate in Hades.

He was punished by being changed into an owl. After being transformed into a screech owl, he became the familiar bird of Hades, King of the Underworld.

How Lady Gaga Finally Delighted Nationalists in Japan

Why Your Team Sucks 2014: New Orleans Saints

by gguillotte
The Saints love to present themselves as a cute little underdog franchise here to save a downtrodden-but-wonderful city. But at their core, they are still a heartless team run by a skinflint who essentially lucked into seeing his franchise become a beloved public institution just as he was poised to ship them out of town. The stadium is sponsored by Mercedes Benz, for fuck's sake.

Pope Francis to Young People: Stop Wasting Time on the Internet

by gguillotte

dang OK cool pope, later internets

“Maybe many young people waste too many hours on futile things,” he said in a speech to 50,000 German altar servers who were visiting on pilgrimage, according to NBC News. “Our life is made up of time, and time is a gift from God, so it is important that it be used in good and fruitful actions.” He went on to cite specific online activities, such as “chatting on the Internet or with smartphones, watching TV soap operas, and (using) the products of technological progress, which should simplify and improve the quality of life, but distract attention away from what is really important.”

I read some of Mallory and I became depressed about its possible influence on D&D...

by Seroster

Mallory 'felt like a description of the most dull version of a D&D battle between simple fighters, where they do nothing exciting except bop each other the head repeatedly'

welcome to idealized combat in the eras you nerds idolize, congratulations.

Some folks here have in the past referred to badass things that knights could do in Mallory's version of King Arthur. So I got a copy of one edition and read ... well, some of it.

There were some cool moments. I remember someone chopping a dude (heh) SO HARD that not only was he killed, but the blow chopped his horse in half as well.

But ... on the other hand, Balan and Balin spend HOURS fighting each other. It really felt like a description of the most dull version of a D&D battle between simple fighters, where they do nothing exciting except bop each other the head repeatedly, chipping away at enormous hit point totals. Of course, since the story is that they both die, neither of them actually TALKS to the other before the fight begins. *sigh*

The downside of high school science requirements: More dropouts

by John Timmer

Language and math have always been part of the core public school experience in the US; science, by contrast, has often been considered an optional topic. But the combination of a push for greater standards and a recognition of science's increasing role in our high-tech economy has resulted in the adoption of science requirements by many states. Now, an analysis of US census data suggests that the increased push for science may have a negative effect: an increase in the dropout rate in states that have adopted science requirements.

This isn't to say that science is bad for students. "That there is positive impact of rigorous coursework when chosen by students is not controversial," researchers based at the Washington University School of Medicine wrote in a recent study, "but there has been ongoing debate over the effects of requiring a more difficult high school curriculum for everyone."

The authors relied on data obtained by the US Census Bureau, through the actual census and annual surveys the Bureau performs. (For data junkies, it's worth noting that all of the data is publicly available from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series website.)

Ethical questions emerge over who gets Ebola drug - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
So far the experimental drug ZMapp has been used to treat two infected Americans and a Spaniard but no Africans for a hemorrhagic disease that has been ravaging West Africa for months and has killed about 50 percent of those it infects. That news came as medical experts debated the ethical questions surrounding experimental Ebola drugs and vaccines during a teleconference Monday organized by the U.N. health agency.
