Grounds crew accidentally mows artificial turf, ruins field

by James Dator

The landscaping crew at my buddies' HS mistakenly mowed the field turf #HSFootball #tragic pic.twitter.com/3cB4RUcXYe

— Tom Fink (@finkdontstink) September 3, 2014

It's baffling to imagine the thought process behind this. At some point in time someone had to say to themselves, "Hmmm, it's getting pretty long. We should probably mow this."

At least other grounds crews around the country were quick to ensure people knew the gaffe wasn't theirs.

Pitch invader who took free kick crowdfunds fine

by Ryan Rosenblatt

The judge thought he was cool. So did the Internet.

The Premier League season started with a fan running onto the field and kicking a ball that had been placed for a free kick. It was hilarious and wonderful, but also illegal. So Jordan Dunn, the man who took to the pitch, was arrested and charged for his exploits.

Passing sentence at Thames Magistrates' Court in east London, District Judge Gareth Branston said: "You had consumed alcohol and your stride pattern was a bit out of kilter, but to borrow a phrase you did bend it like Beckham.

The judge said the effort was "easily" saved by the West Ham goalkeeper, but referred to Christian Eriksen's subsequent free kick from the same spot, saying: "I understand that the professional footballer who followed you did not do any better."

Unfortunately, bending it like Beckham isn't enough to get out of trouble. The judge still levied a £305 fine on Dunn, who did what any enterprising 22-year-old would do: go to the Internet.

Dunn started a Go Fund Me to pay his fine, and there was no shortage of support. He raised all of the money in hours and didn't have to pay the fine with a dime out of his own pocket.

Dr. Marshawn and Mr. Lynch: The two sides of the unpredictable Seahawks star

by Kevin Fixler

Marshawn Lynch, one of the best running backs in the NFL, moseys through the door of Albany Bowl early Friday evening wearing all black: jeans, low tops and an oversized sweatshirt, hood up and tightly fastened with a bow over a backwards black hat. Printed on his hoodie in bright red are big, arced letters reading "LIFEGUARD" with a sizable red cross below them, followed by the large words "OAKLAND," and "CALIFORNIA" underneath in smaller text.

"It is! It is him!" a waist-high little boy...

Hark, A Vagrant: Lady of Shalott

buy this print!

I don't care how hot some random dude is, getting a peep at him probably not the best reason to invoke a vague curse that takes your life, LADY OF SHALOTT. Even if you did that thing where you lower your sunglasses at them as they go by, and say "dayuum!" And even if he's Lancelot. I can't imagine it being worth it, anyway. But I can imagine a circumstance that would definitely ruin the moment.

OK, I can joke about The Lady of Shalott, but I can't fib, I get emotional listening to Loreena McKennitt singing it, like the best of us.

More Kokoro at a later time! I did not forget that I said the same thing about Wuthering Heights.

Soon it is time for my annual merchandise rollout! If there is anything you would particularly want, drop me a line. I just want to make things people like, when it comes to that stuff.

The Guide to Not Buying a 3D Printer #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Noe Ruiz

Well, a person looking to buy a 3d printer nowadays will have a larger choice than ever of manufacturers and models. Literally hundreds of them. Alas, of those hundreds maybe 5% are actually worth spending money on.

As with any emerging technology, it didn’t take long for people to start inventing catchphrases, wrapping completely trivial features into mysterious techno babble, and generally exploiting everything they can think of to sway a non-suspecting onlooker into buying their product.

Executable Version of Apollo Lunar Landing Visualization

by adafruit

Executable Version of Apollo Lunar Landing Visualization.

Yanni Loukissas of Georgia Tech and I are pleased to publish the executable version of our Apollo Lunar Landing Visualization.

The Apollo 11 visualization draws together social and technical data from the 1969 moon landing in a dynamic 2D graphic. The horizontal axis is an interactive timeline. The vertical axis is divided into several sections, each corresponding to a data source. At the top, commentators are present in narratives from Digital Apollo and NASA technical debriefings. Just below are the members of ground control. The middle section is a log-scale graph stretching from Earth (~10E9 ft. away) to the Moon. Utterances from the landing CAPCOM, Duke, the command module pilot, Collins, the mission commander, Armstrong, and the lunar module pilot, Aldrin, are plotted on this graph. The graph is partially overlaid on a composite image of the lunar surface. Data from the Apollo computer systems, the DSKY (display/keyboard interface to the Apollo computer) and the AGC (Abort Guidance Computer) occupies the bottom of the visualization. Each circle on the graph represents an utterance by one member of the team or ground control, with the size of the circle proportional to the length of the utterance. Lines connecting subsequent utterances represent inquiries and responses between team members. Specific events are labeled, such as computer program changes and program alarms. During a real-time playback, the white line moves across the horizontal axis as audio plays, and the crew’s specific utterances are spelled out to the right. In sync with the human dialog, the AGC and DSKY display values and modes. In these dynamics, one can trace the trading of workload and authority during the critical final phases of landing, and how that workload was offloaded from the lunar module to Houston in response to the program alarms.

How the NFL could destroy traditional TV—if it wanted to

by John McDuling
firehose

'the strongest evidence yet that the NFL is the laying the foundations for an internet based, direct-to consumer offering that involves some of its live content'

Back with a bang

The NFL is back. Tonight in Seattle, much to the delight of millions of Americans, the country’s most popular sports league will return with the first game of its latest season.

It is difficult to overstate the sheer size and scale of the National Football League. It is not just America’s (and probably the world’s)  biggest league, in terms of finances, it is also one one of the country’s major media companies. It’s revenue last year of roughly $10 billion* dwarfs other leagues in the US and abroad, as well as some prominent very prominent digital media and technology companies.

Share
Tap image to zoom

Yes, this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, and the NFL’s revenue is still dwarfed by America’s biggest media companies like Disney (which owns most of ESPN), 21st Century Fox,  Viacom, and Time Warner. Still, the league has said  it wants to generate $25 billion in revenue by 2027. That implies a growth rate of about 7% a year from here, attractive for any company as big (and old) as the NFL.

And we may already be getting a glimpse for how it wants to get there. According to the Wall Street Journal, (paywall) NFL officials last year talked to Google and Microsoft about licensing rights to its Sunday Ticket packages, which allow fans to watch every single game on Sundays (when the bulk of games are played). These rights are currently held by satellite operator DirecTV, which has agreed to be bought by telecom operator AT&T, and both sides have indicated that they expect to renew the agreement.

So it is probably a case of the NFL flexing its muscles to glean more money out of its current broadcast partners. The NFL’s content is so valuable—it’s a huge selling point for DirecTV and  a gigantic ratings driver for broadcast networks and ESPN. Live sports are one of the few reasons why people still watch linear TV, and the NFL is the biggest live sport.

But it could also be the strongest evidence yet that the NFL is the laying the foundations for an internet based, direct-to consumer offering that involves some of its live content. Other sports (Major League Baseball) and quasi-sports (World Wrestling Entertainment) have been doing this for a while now, with varying levels of success. If the NFL follows suit, it would not be an exaggeration to say it could completely transform television.

*A couple of caveats on the $10 billion figure. The NFL’s finances are notoriously opaque. As a non-profit, its has to file returns annually with the IRS, but the most recent one publicly available appears to be for 2011. Media reports from the league itself last year stated revenue was $9.2 billion, while other credible reports have put it at $9.5 billion with $10 billion in sight. Clarification has been sought from the NFL*

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

It’s true, SECRET SIX is back.

I could not be more excited. The news officially was announced today, and my email and DM boxes are completely flooded, have never seen anything quite like it. I can’t even begin to keep up or respond to everyone. Cool!

It’s a dream team. Villains United artist Dale Eaglesham has been waiting YEARS to come back to Secret Six, it’s his favorite series ever, and he is helping with designs and covers, and the great KEN LASHLEY, whom I adore and have been dying to work with is doing the interiors.

It’s amazing, I will tell the whole story soon, but EVERYONE dropped whatever they had coming up to work on this book. It was like, “Secret Six? I am IN.”

Catman and Black Alice are definitely in it…they have some cool new twists. And the series has one HUGE secret we reveal in the first arc that will blow minds…it’s a HUGE DCU reveal.

That’s why our motto is WHAT IS THE SECRET?

I am having a blast. This book always pushed the envelope…now we explode the envelope and bury the ashes!

Thank you, guys. This return is happening because of your support!

If millennials are jerks, blame the baby boomers - Yahoo Finance

by gguillotte
Boomers as a whole will never be thought of as careful stewards of the institutions they inherited — institutions that are now more likely to be considered corrupt and self-serving than benevolent and humble. Why is anybody surprised millennials are turning out to be cynical, untrusting and mercenary? In the world they see, those traits are necessary to survive. As for their attitudes, millennials may channel their parents more than any generation of the past century. The loathsome rich kids of Beverly Hills didn’t get rich on their own; they inherited wealth from baby-boomer parents trying to buy their kids happiness. The Kardashians didn’t create their own wealth, either. It came from a famous criminal lawyer born in 1944 and an opportunistic Olympic legend born in 1949. While emblematic of their selfie-absorbed generation, the Kardashians and their kind are funded by prior generations.

Suspect plays with cats during police chase in Florida - UPI.com

by gguillotte
BOCA RATON, Fla., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A man in South Florida stopped in the middle of being chased by police Friday to ask for water and pet some cats. Authorities said Daniel Pinedo-Velapatino, 21, had stolen thousands in cash from his friend's wallet after a night of drug use. He then crashed a Lexus into multiple vehicles -- including a police cruiser -- and a fire hydrant before ditching the car.

WIRE Reunion!! Clarke Peters Joins David Simon's SHOW ME A HERO!!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Clarke Peters, who worked with David Simon on both “Treme” and “The Wire,” has joined the cast of Simon’s latest HBO miniseries “Show Me A Hero.”

Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Star Wars: Episode VII”) will star in “Show Me A Hero” as Nick Wasicsko, the real-life 28-year-old mayor of Yonkers, N.Y., who saw his political career derailed after he was forced by a federal court to build low-income housing in his city’s whitest neighborhoods.

Peters, who played Lester Freamon on "The Wire," now portrays a consultant hired to prepare low-earning citizens for what they can expect when they move into their new, more affluent neighborhood.

Catherine Keener (“Captain Phillips,” “Bad Grandpa”) plays the leader of an East Yonkers homeowners association whose views on the project change radically once she gets to know its prospective tenants.

Others in the cast include Daniel Stern (“City Slickers,” “Manhattan”), James Belushi (“According To Jim”), Michael Stahl-David (“Cloverfield”), Winona Ryder (“Star Trek”), Alfred Molina (“Spider-Man 2”), LaTanya Richardson (“100 Centre Street”), Terry Kinney (“Oz”), Natalie Paul (“Smash”) and Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”).

The six-hour miniseries is based on the book by Lisa Belkin and will be co-scripted by writer-producer Simon, who masterminded numerous other projects for the channel, including “The Wire,” “Treme” and two other miniseries: “The Corner” and “Generation Kill.”

#gamergate as Reaction

dropouthangoutspaceout:

So I just read Liz Ryerson’s latest thoughts on #gamergate. It’s on point and quite good, getting a lot closer to the core of the cultural movement that we are seeing. I was pleasantly surprised to find her riffing off my post from last year, which was an attempt to explain why gamer culture is so fraught with misogyny, racism and conspiracy.

Liz says that:

the disillusionment people on the gamergate hashtag people feel is real - one borne out of the industry’s bloat and creative stagnancy, the sudden turns towards social consciousness in the media, a loss of a feeling of greater ‘consensus’ in game culture because of the splintering of media and, especially, feelings of inaccessibility into spaces that are now influencing game culture at large.

It’s this disillusionment that is key. And this disillusionment is a function of alienation

Why We Didn't Want to Talk about "GamerGate":

perilunesky:

drnerdlove:

We didn’t want to have to do this, but let’s talk about “GamerGate”.

Paste nails it.

“That’s who is behind this entire situation: anti-woman trolls who intentionally distort the meaning of the word “ethics” to further their own agenda and mislead their followers. There are some beating the #GamerGate drum who sincerely believe that it’s not related to misogyny or the persistent attacks on Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn, that it’s simply about keeping the games press accountable. It’s impossible to extricate that hashtag from its roots, though, which grew out of unconscionable smears and threats against two prominent women in gaming merely because they are prominent women in gaming. All the conspiracies and trumped-up claims of “evidence” of collusion among developers, press agents and the press spread by the #GamerGate founders are lies and distortions aimed at driving Quinn, Sarkeesian and other women out of videogames. Whether it’s hate, fear or simply the grotesque joy horrible people find in maliciously denigrating others, this entire #GamerGate nonsense is built on silencing women and shutting them out of games.”

The End of Gatekeeping: The Extinction Burst of Gaming Culture - Paging Dr. NerdLove

The End of Gatekeeping: The Extinction Burst of Gaming Culture - Paging Dr. NerdLove:

perilunesky:

The harassment of women in gaming culture leaves gamers fighting a losing battle against change.

"It’s been an ugly couple of weeks for gaming culture. Not only did the Zoe Quinn affair erupt, leading to the increased harassment and abuse of an indie games developer for the crime of being a woman in gaming, but Anita Sarkeesian was driven from her home by death threats following the release of the latest entry in the Tropes vs. Women In Video Games video series. It’s disturbing stuff to say the least and damning of geek and gaming culture as a whole that we keep having these same debates and watching the self-appointed gatekeepers of gaming attempt to chase women out of the clubhouse and off of the Internet because they dare to set foot into the “male” domain. It’s entitlement writ large – whiny children complaining that they’re not getting their every whim catered to.

And they have a point. They’re not. And that’s why the anger has grown so much hotter and the harassment has become so much more vicious. It’s an extinction burst.

We’re watching the beginning of the end of gatekeeping in gaming culture.”

Food for thought, in this article.
