Reddit-powered botnet infected thousands of Macs worldwide

by Sean Gallagher
firehose

reddit is for redditors

A search run by the iWorm malware against Reddit yielded lists of compromised servers making up the botnet's command and control network.
Dr.WEB

The Russian antivirus vendor Dr. Web has reported the spread of a new botnet that exclusively targets Apple computers running Mac OS X. According to a survey of traffic conducted by researchers at Dr. Web, over 17,000 Macs worldwide are part of the Mac.BackDoor.iWorm botnet—and almost a quarter of them are in the US. One of the most curious aspects of the botnet is that it uses a search of Reddit posts to a Minecraft server list subreddit to retrieve IP addresses for its command and control (CnC) network. That subreddit now appears to have been expunged of CnC data, and the account that posted the data appears to be shut down.

The Dr. Web report doesn’t say how Mac.BackDoor.iWorm is being distributed to victims of the malware. But its “dropper” program installs the malware into the Library directory within the affected user’s account home folder, disguised as an Application Support directory for “JavaW." The dropper then generates an OS X .plist file to automatically launch the bot whenever the system is started.

The bot malware itself looks for somewhere in the user’s Library folder to store a configuration file, then connects to Reddit’s search page. It uses an MD5 hash algorithm to encode the current date, and uses the first 8 bytes of that value to search Reddit’s “minecraftserverlist” subreddit’—where most of the legitimate posts are over a year old.

Possible Reason Behind Version Hop to Windows 10: Compatibility

by timothy
First time accepted submitter ndykman (659315) writes The Independent reports that a MS developer has suggested a real reason behind the Windows 10 name: old code. More specifically, code that looks for "Windows 9" to determine the Windows version. Fine for Windows 95 or Windows 98, but not so great for a new operating system. The article includes a link that shows that yes, this would be a problem.

Rob Bironas had .218 BAC on night of fatal crash, according to report

by Matt Verderame

Rob Bironas was heavily intoxicated during the night of his fatal crash, according to a toxicology report released Friday evening.

Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas had a blood alcohol level of .218 on the night he died, according to the toxicology report released by the Davidson County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday. The legal limit for a blood alcohol content reading is .08 in Tennessee, putting Bironas well above the acceptable number. Bironas, 36, died in a single-car accident from blunt-force trauma to his head when his SUV crashed into a ditch on Battery Lane in Nashville.

Before Bironas crashed, a woman called 911 claiming that he had "tried to start a fight" with her and her husband while driving. A pair of students from the Nashville area also reported that Bironas "tried to kill us" by recklessly driving during a high-speed altercation.

Bironas was married to Rachel Bradshaw, the daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw. Rachel stated that Bironas had one drink with her and their friends before leaving the house. She added that it was unusual that he did not say he was leaving.

Bironas' father, Larry, released a statement after the toxicology report was made public. Via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.

"We appreciate the hard work of the local authorities to help us begin to answer the many questions we have had surrounding the death of our son. Today we learned that Rob had been drinking, and got behind the wheel. This is something he didn't do as a rule. We don't know why he made that choice this time. Rob made a mistake, and he paid the ultimate price. We appreciate the outpouring of support, care and concern showed to us by Rob's friends, the NFL, and the Nashville community. We appreciate your respect for his mother and me, his siblings, his son, and his wife as we grieve."

The Metro Nashville Police Department is still looking into the open case. Bironas finished his NFL career at the end of the 2013 season, ranking second all-time in Titans history with 1,032 points.

Newswire: Exclusive preview: A new era begins for Barbara Gordon in Batgirl #35

by Oliver Sava

whoa whoa whoa whoa Maris is coloring?

god damn it stop being awesome. I was perfectly happy not buying any DC books. fucking quit it

When DC Comics announced a new direction for Batgirl this past summer, the news was met with overwhelming positivity. The sleek costume redesign by co-writer and breakdown artist Cameron Stewart has taken the fan community by storm, and anticipation grows with every new detail about the new team’s first issue. The wait is finally over next week, and this preview of Batgirl #35 shows that readers have good reason to be excited thanks to a strong stylistic shift that invigorates the series.

The first order of business by co-writers Stewart and Brenden Fletcher is to get Barbara out of her old surroundings by relocating her to Burnside, the “cool” part of Gotham. The art team brings a lot of personality to the new characters and setting, and the combination of Stewart’s expressive breakdowns, Babs Tarr’s smooth finished artwork, and Maris Wicks’ bright color palette makes the new ...

Newswire: Ryan Adams finally covered Bryan Adams

by Mike Vago

After making a career out of being confused with Canadian pop singer-songwriter Bryan Adams, American alt-country singer-songwriter Ryan Adams has finally broken down and decided to just embrace it: Ryan Adams covered Bryan Adams at a concert earlier in the week.

Ryan Adams—whose Wikipedia entry opens with the words “Not to be confused with Bryan Adams”—has been dogged by comparisons throughout his career. He appears to have a love-hate relationship with the Canadian pop star, saying at various points that “he is not a serious artist,” but that “Bryan Adams was a totally huge part of everything that I am musically.” He’s also said he had to go into therapy to deal with his anger at fans, who would turn up to Ryan Adams’ concerts and shout out requests for Bryan Adams’ hit “Summer of ’69.” He infamously stopped a Nashville show to kick out one such ...

Newswire: Courtney Love is becoming an opera singer, sort of

by Marah Eakin

Continuing a natural career arc, Courtney Love has become an opera singer. The Hole singer has joined the cast of Kansas City Choir Boy, a pop opera that premieres January 8 in New York City. Love will play one of the lead roles in the Todd Almond-created musical, with Almond telling the New York Times he cast Love because he’s “always been fascinated with her.” Almond is also the male lead in the play, described as “a theatricalized concept album about explosive young love tested by cruel fate, told in a series of mysterious flashbacks.” Unfortunately (or fortunately), Love won’t be wearing Viking horns or even trying to hit any really high notes, with Almond noting that Kansas City is more a “group of songs that tell a story” than a traditional opera.

not just video games, the military is well known for letting just about any entertainment industry use technical advisers or even expensive equipment for cheap (sometimes even free) if they agree to portraying the US military in an only positive way.

heck a post apocalyptic film called the day after was almost barred from using any military images because the film makers didn’t want to definitively state that America didn’t launch the first bomb.

Subway Sandwich Ad Says Halloween Season Is the Same as Bikini Season

by gguillotte
“Bikini season may be over, but there’s more reasons right around the corner to stay fit.” At least that’s what Subway thinks. In a new commercial timed for Halloween, the spot has received criticism for being sexist and influencing negative body-image attitudes. One of the women turns to her fellow diners and says to them in an accusatory tone, “You guys are eating burgers?” Burgers, deemed a fatty indulgence by this judgmental character, can pack on pounds before the skin-exposing holiday. “Halloween is coming you’ve gotta stay in shape for all of the costumes,” she says. She then goes on to switch between various “sexy” (although it seems Subway has been forbidden from using that exact term) getups including Attractive Nurse, Spicy Red Riding Hood, Viking Princess Warrior, Hot Devil, Sassy Teacher, and Foxy Fullback.

all carriers suck forever

A couple is suing Comcast after they say their home security system failed when intruders nearly killed their teenage son in their home last year. ... But in Comcast's contract, they waive all liability. "If their argument is to be accepted, they could put in empty black boxes throughout the house and say, 'That's your system.' And then something goes wrong, and they say, 'We never promised you it would work,'" said Ken Friedman, attorney.

The Unpatchable Malware That Infects USBs Is Now On The Loose

Samsung Proves Its Robot Butts Are Better Than Apple’s in Hilarious Phone Bend Test Demonstration - Samsung has phone bending down. They're well on their way to avatar status.

by Dan Van Winkle

#butts + brands

If you want to test whether or not being sat on by puny, inferior human butts will bend today’s giant smartphones, you’re going to need a robot butt. Apple and Samsung both have custom robutts that tirelessly, mercilessly test countless smartphones by getting all butt-dial on them, but it looks like Samsung has the better butt.

Apple has claimed that they’ve received less than ten complaints of bent iPhone 6 Pluses, but maybe that’s because everyone’s too busy tweeting about it, blogging about it, and then buying a different brand of phone to drop Apple a line? So, Apple released a video last week showing how they bend-test their phones and how the iPhone 6 plus is totally fine, everyone, they swear. And the robot butts made their first appearance:

Many have decried hipster Apple fans’ skinny jeans as the cause of in-pocket bending, but judging by the Samsung video, the jeans are the key to a safe phone. Plus, they make the robot butt way more entertaining than just a curved battering ram. Come on, Apple. Bend it like Samsung.

Social Justice Class Pins Are Things You Can Buy Now - No love for social justice barbarians?

As far as misguided insults from Internet-based jerks go, the new hotness for the past couple of months has been “social justice warrior.” As a slur, it’s quite effective. I mean, clearly some of us are social justice bards and social justice wizards, and being mis-classed like that can be very upsetting. Luckily, there are ways to combat this kind of hurtfulness before it starts—with buttons!

Here’s a better look at the pixellated weapons found on each button, as gorgeously designed by Sarah “Chip” Nixon, aka @Chiparoo.

Progress on the #SocialJusticeClasses buttons. Need to poke at them more. pic.twitter.com/l3CzkHLuYD — Creepy McCrypterson (@Chiparoo) September 8, 2014

Nixon says on her Twitter that the buttons will be available for $2 each, or $10 for the whole set, at Seattle’s GeekGirlCon next weekend (oh, if only it weren’t the same time as NYCC! *fist shake*). Even better, she plans to give the proceeds to Planned Parenthood. Is there a button for social justice queen? Because I think this person absolutely deserves one.
