Uber Flunks the Better Business Bureau Test - Yahoo Finance

by gguillotte
The company received an "€œF" rating from the Better Business Bureau on Thursday, the lowest possible rating given by the organization. Customers still feel misinformed about how they are charged for their rides, according to complaints at the bureau'€™s website, and say they are not able to receive adequate customer service when they try to complain about their fares.

Reports: FSU QB Jameis Winston to face disciplinary hearing overseen by third party | Dr. Saturday - Yahoo Sports

by gguillotte
“We know nothing about what the hearing process is going to be, the right to call witnesses, if there’s going to be witnesses called or if it’s going to be this third party interviewing all the people,” Clune said to USA Today. “We just have no details of what this is going to look like.” Clune said the university going with a third party is a “highly unusual process,” but it does address “some concerns” about the school’s ability to effectively and fairly come to a decision amid months of intense media scrutiny. Winston, who led FSU to an undefeated season and national championship last season, was never charged with a crime when a state investigation into the matter ended in late 2013. The No. 1 Seminoles are 5-0 in 2014 and will play Syracuse on the road Saturday.

How Spurious Wikipedia Edits Can Attach a Name To a Scandal, 35 Years On

by timothy
Andreas Kolbe (2591067) writes For more than six years, Wikipedia named an innocent man as a key culprit in the 1978/79 Boston College point shaving scandal. The name Joe Streater was inserted into Wikipedia by an anonymous user in August 2008. The unsourced insertion was never challenged or deleted, and over time, Streater became widely associated with the scandal through newspaper and TV reports as well as countless blogs and fan sites, all of which directly or indirectly copied this spurious fact from Wikipedia. Yet research shows that Streater, whose present whereabouts are unknown, did not even play in the 1978/79 season. Before August 2008, his name was never mentioned in connection with the scandal. As journalists have less and less time for in-depth research, more and more of them seem to be relying on Wikipedia instead, and the online encyclopedia is increasingly becoming a vector for the spread of spurious information.

Slow credit card verification lands Florida man in jail

by Megan Geuss
firehose

'As Marcani told NBC, “The club manager called my bank and gave me the phone to talk to the bank and that’s when the cop interfered and I think he said, ‘I’m tired of this shit. We even told them, 'walk us, escort us to the ATM machine.'” According to Marcani, the officer arrived at the scene at 3:49am. A few minutes later, at 3:57am, Marcani reportedly received an e-mail from Capital One asking him to verify the charge, but he wasn't able to check the e-mail because he was already handcuffed and the police confiscated his phone.'

Last week a man was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, FL when his two credit cards were declined after he spent $600 on bottle service at a nightclub.

The story wouldn't be all that interesting were it not for the fact that the man, Don Marcani, had not reached his credit limit that night. In fact, he was able to pay his $1,000 bail the next morning using one of the credit cards that was declined earlier.

As Marcani told NBC 6 South Florida, he and his friend used a Wells Fargo credit card to buy $80-worth of drinks at the bar of Cyn Nightclub. Then they decided to move into the VIP section, costing them $600. The waitress took Marcani's credit card, but when she tried to run the credit card later that night, it was declined. Marcani then provided a Capital One credit card, which was also declined.

Fast-tracked ebola vaccine is now being tested in West Africa

by Dante D'Orazio

In the immediate aftermath of the ebola outbreak in West Africa, several drug companies quickly began work on developing a vaccine for the deadly virus. Now, one of those vaccines is undergoing trials in Mali and, if testing goes as planned, it will be deployed in the hardest-hit West African nations in an effort to protect healthcare workers.

Mali has no known ebola cases, though shares a border with Guinea, the nation in which the outbreak began. According to The Guardian, three healthcare workers there have been given the experimental vaccine to test that it has no adverse effects. It's reported that 37 more workers will receive the vaccine in the coming weeks before it can be used in ebola-stricken nations. The efficacy of the vaccine will largely remain unknown until it is used in areas hit with the virus.

As many as 10,000 doses may be ready by year's end

The vaccine, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Maryland, has been fast-tracked in hopes that it can help turn the tide in the battle against the virus. Just a couple of weeks ago, it was tested on volunteers in the US and UK. Last month, it was successfully tested in monkeys with no ill effects. It's not unusual for a typical vaccine to take as long as a year to go through the same process.

It's said that as many as 10,000 doses of the vaccine, which uses a cold virus to deliver a tiny amount of ebola to the body, could be ready by year's end. The focus, however, is on protecting doctors and other healthcare workers in the region, with hopes that a reliable vaccine could bring more health workers to the area.

Gay rights groups hail new Catholic tone - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
Gay rights groups are cautiously cheering a shift in tone from the Catholic Church toward homosexuals, encouraged that Pope Francis' famous "Who am I to judge?" position has filtered down to bishops debating family issues at a Vatican meeting this week. There is no discussion that church doctrine on homosexuality will change or that the Vatican will soon endorse gay marriage or even gay unions. It will not, as the Vatican's top canon lawyer made clear Thursday. But for the first time, a Vatican meeting is discussing gay and lesbian issues and how to provide better spiritual care to Catholic homosexuals. Day after day, bishops have spoken of the need to change the church's language about gays from words of moral condemnation and judgment to words of welcome and respect.

New Comic Details the life of Facebook cofounder Sheryl Sanberg. via huffingtonpost

The life of billionaire Facebook executive and “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg has been distilled into a 32-page comic book set for release this week.

“Female Force: Sheryl Sandberg” will be available in print and digital versions, according to publisher Bluewater Production.

The publishing company’s “Female Force” line of biography-based comics has also spotlighted Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Melinda Gates, Martha Stewart and Madonna.

“Sheryl Sandberg is a hero to many women,” Bluewater said in a post about the comic at its website. “So becoming a comic-book superhero was the next logical step.”

Facebook co-founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg was the hero of a Bluewater comic book released about four years ago.

The Sandberg comic sets out to show “behind-the-scenes machinations” that resulted in Sandberg becoming a force for empowering business women, according to Bluewater publisher Darren Davis.

Art in the comic book is the work of Angel Bernuye, according to Bluewater.

“I found it quite a challenge, as it was necessary to distill her life to date into one comic,” Sandberg comic author Michael Frizell said in a release.

“Sheryl Sandberg’s accomplishments and sage advice could fill several issues.”

The 45-year-old former Google executive was catapulted onto the billionaire’s list by her stake in California-based Facebook, which saw its shares close at $76.80 on the Nasdaq exchange on Monday.

Scientists still play video games on their expensive laboratory equipment

by Owen S. Good

This is the control module for an Agilent High Performance Liquid Chromatography system. They separate, identify and quantify each component in a mixture. These systems have many applications, such as medicine, research, manufacturing and, as you can see, Space Invaders.

Redditor NateNewThread posted this image of his Agilent HPLC handheld monitor yesterday, showing it playing Space Invaders, accessed by an Easter egg menu. These machines cost in the tens of thousands of dollars, sometimes six figures, so it's nice that the manufacturer included a free game as a pre-order bonus. Or perhaps it was the other way around?

If you have one in your laboratory (the model isn't specified but appears to be a 1260, going by this picture and this listing from Agilent) access the games menu by typing "hobbit" at the welcome screen. "Then a new screen will appear with the tab 'games,'" writes NateNewThread. "It's in the games screen along with a puzzle game which I have yet to explore."

Games on laboratory research equipment is a tradition perhaps as old as video gaming itself. What some consider to be the first video game, Tennis for Two, was coded by William Higinbotham at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958 and played on a the Donner Model 30's oscilloscope. Spacewar was coded in 1961 by three researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a PDP-1, one of which still exists at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., and is playable by the public.

"Companies have been doing stuff like this with scientific systems for a while now," noted another Redditor in comments on the image. "On the HP Oscilloscopes at my school, a specific button combo will let you play Tetris on it."

The tech diversity story that’s not being told.

by Anil Dash

'Asian American men who work in tech are benefitting from tech’s systematic exclusion of women and non-Asian minorities.
...
I am very sensitive to the fact that a large percentage of Asian American workers are at tech companies on work visas or under other working conditions that make activism or criticism of employers untenable. I don’t suggest that vulnerable workers can reasonably be asked to risk their jobs or residency. But the rest of us, those of us born in the United States, or who are citizens, have an obligation to act. The tech industry cannot function without the work of Asian American men. This is a truth, a powerful truth, that should be the basis for our collective action on behalf of fellow marginalized communities. Tell your boss you want your company to commit to real, measurable improvements in inclusion, and to stop pushing women and minorities out of the industry.'

Courtney shared this story from The Message — Medium.

We’ve had countless conversations about the horrible track record of the tech industry when it comes to the inclusion of anyone who isn’t a…

San Jose police department suspends work with 49ers amid questionable behavior in Ray McDonald case

by Jeff Gray
firehose

"Sgt. Sean Pritchard, who moonlighted for the 49ers' security detail, attended a party at the McDonald residence earlier in the night of McDonald's arrest, that he was reportedly called back to the scene by McDonald and that he was on location, in uniform before police arrived."

Police is distancing itself from the team after allegations that one of its officers became inappropriately involved with Ray McDonald's domestic abuse arrest.

The San Jose Police Department has suspended all off-duty security work with the San Francisco 49ers amid a growing controversy involving one of its officers and his involvement in the Aug. 31 domestic violence arrest of linebacker Ray McDonaldaccording to a report by the San Jose Mercury News.

The department currently has 17 officers employed as off-duty security personnel, and has taken criticism for becoming too connected to the team to effectively carry out the investigation.

It was recently revealed that Sgt. Sean Pritchard, who moonlighted for the 49ers' security detail, attended a party at the McDonald residence earlier in the night of McDonald's arrest, that he was reportedly called back to the scene by McDonald and that he was on location, in uniform before police arrived.

Sources told the San Jose Mercury News that Pritchard's involvement in the case stalled the investigation and was part of the reason it took a month to be presented to the District Attorney's Office. The case remains under review and no charges have been filed.

McDonald was arrested at his home after police responded to a domestic abuse call and found visible injuries to his pregnant fiancee.

Police also visited the residence twice in May, though no charges were filed in either call.
