Great little system map from the back of a ticket. Amtrak’s modern-day Texas Eagle route is a direct descendant of the route shown here.

Women in STEM of WWII - The real “Rosie Riveters”
In most countries women were not permitted to fight on the front lines of the war. Instead, they supported the war effort by learning, training and taking up jobs usually held by men.
These women did a lot more than rivet, they designed, built and tested thousands of aircraft in factories across Canada and the US. Prior to the war, women would have been mostly banned from taking up such jobs.

Noted: New Name and Logo for Pelican Rouge
No Ruse Here: It's a Red Pelican
Autobar Group Ltd. engages in roasting and blending, packaging, and vending coffee in the United Kingdom and internationally. The company was incorporated in 1925 and is based in London, United Kingdom. Autobar Group Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of Charden International B.V.
Pelican Rouge's history dates back to the nineteenth-century Belgium, Antwerp. In the year 1863 Josef van Leckwijck and his sons were the first to trade roasted coffee. With this complete new formula the Pelican Rouge brand quickly evolved into a mark for consistent and high quality coffee.
Today Pelican Rouge is the leader of coffee solutions across Europe through multiple channels. Every day we serve 7 million coffee lovers their favourite cup with the purpose of making their day as rewarding as possible. We work with a dedicated customer support network across 13 countries to deliver on our promises. As we control the product from bean to cup, we are determined to bring you the perfect coffee experience using the latest technologies.

Opinion/Notes: If you are as confused as I was when I was trying to figure this out, here is what I (think I) know: Pelican Rouge has been a consumer coffee brand in Europe for a long time now and has been associated with Autobar, a business-to-business vending machine supplier, since the early 2000s. Now they are all together. And the Illy coffee brand also figures somewhere in there. Anyway, this is about pelicans. It's also about that old Autobar logo; man, what a mess, it couldn't mean coffee any less even if it had the drawing of a fish on it. Now, if we compare pelican to pelican, the change is more interesting, going from a literal and illustrative rendition to a highly abstract one that is sort of good but also sort of terrible. I like the extreme minimalist approach but perhaps abstracting the pelican's face to just an eye is an extreme. The overall shape is interesting and it reduces quite well. The typoraphy, pulled directly from the old one has some vintage charm to it but it would have benefitted from some finessing and or at least letter-spacing to make it as airy as the new icon. Nonetheless, it's been a strong month for pelicans on Brand New.

Select Quote: The group's stated strategy is to reinforce its credentials as a coffee roaster with multiple distribution channels, vending being the most important. In order to make this shift more tangible and visible to customers, suppliers, employees and other business partners the company announces today its intention to change its name to PELICAN ROUGE. PELICAN ROUGE is a long established coffee brand with its origins in Antwerp in 1863. The name change demonstrates our intention to focus on quality coffee, quality service and quality delivery throughout the entire customer experience, and to put the customer at the heart of everything we do.
WTF, Russia’s domestic Internet traffic mysteriously passes through Chinese routers
Domestic Internet traffic traveling inside the borders of Russia has repeatedly been rerouted outside of the country under an unexplained series of events that degrades performance and could compromise the security of Russian communications.
The finding, reported Thursday in a blog post published by Internet monitoring service Dyn, underscores the fragility of the border gateway protocol (BGP), which forms the underpinning of the Internet's global routing system. In this case, domestic Russian traffic was repeatedly routed to routers operated by China Telecom, a firm with close ties to that country's government. When huge amounts of traffic are diverted to far-away regions before ultimately reaching their final destination, it increases the chances hackers with the ability to monitor the connections have monitored or even altered some of the communications. A similar concern emerged last year, when Dyn found big chunks of traffic belonging to US banks, government agencies, and network service providers had been improperly routed through Belarusian or Icelandic service providers.
The hijacking of Russian traffic is linked to last year's peering agreement between Russian mobile provider Vimpelcom and China Telecom. The pact allowed the firms to save money by having some of their traffic carried over the other's network rather than through a more expensive transit operator. On multiple occasions since then, according to Dyn, communications destined for Russia has followed extremely round-about routes that take the traffic into China before sending it on to its final stop. Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Dyn, wrote:

Happy 100th birthday Hedy Lamarr, the inventor who made the wireless internet possible.
Hedy Lamarr, whose acting career spanned Hollywood’s golden age of the forties and fifties, was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful women to grace the silver screen.
However she was much, much more than just a pretty face. As an inventor, Hedy Lamarr was responsible for developing the technology that underpins today’s wireless networks.
The pioneering women of electronic music – an interactive timeline #MusicMonday
Back on October 14th The Vinyl Factory made a great post outlining some of the most influential women in electronic music in honor of Ada Lovelace Day. The post features an interactive timeline – check it out here. Seen above is One of our favorite electronic musicians Delia Derbyshire. They write:
Perhaps the most famous and latterly celebrated of all the early electronics pioneers to emerge from the Maida Vale basement where the Radiophonic Workshop operated. A visionary composer of electronic music which remains justly celebrated in a steady stream of archival reissues, Derbyshire will forever go down in pop lore as the woman behind the original Dr Who theme, which in 1963 became one of the first to be produced by entirely electronic means.

The day after Justin Bieber visited Steelers headquarters, Pittsburgh went on to play their worst game of the season, losing 20-13 to the sad sack Jets.
Clay Matthews stonewalling a Chicago end-around is Bears-Packers in one GIF
The Bears tried something. The Packers were so much better at that thing that the Bears should feel bad.
This play goes in the record book as a Chris Williams rush for a loss of 8 yards, but watching it tells you so, so much more:
It's 35-0 in the first half. Aaron Rodgers has five TD's. Jay Cutler has none.
Jay Cutler threw a pick 6 off his teammates' helmet
There's not much left to say, really. The Packers pulled Aaron Rodgers early in the third quarter and things are still going terribly for the Bears.
BBC calls Welsh rugby player 'Jake Ballsack' by accident
The BBC website made a wee bit of a mistake when they listed the lineups for last week's Wales vs. Australia rugby match.
Haha spot the error @BBCSport @BBCWalesSport ...I'll give you a clue - he plays second row for us!! pic.twitter.com/qSQSztDqcz

Wales has a player named Jake Ball (he's the gent on the right in the above photo). They do not have a player named Jake Ballsack.
According to The Guardian, the BBC has corrected the error and apologized for the gaffe.
"We are investigating how this error occurred and the piece was amended as soon as it was spotted. We apologise for any offence that may have been caused."
Apologies to all Balls and Ballsacks everywhere. You deserve better than this.
Meet ‘Dr. Chaps’: Colorado’s new anti-gay, demon hunting state legislator – LGBTQ Nation
Gordon “Dr. Chaps” Klingenschmitt, a radical anti-gay Religious Right activist who brags of having once tried to rid of woman of the “foul spirit of lesbianism” through an exorcism and who openly proclaims that “American law needs to reflect God’s law” and that our foreign policy must be based on the Bible, won election to the Colorado House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Klingenschmitt, who wrote a book about how President Obama is possessed by demons and once performed an exorcism of Obama, ran an utterly embarrassing campaign yet nonetheless managed to defeat his Democratic opponent by nearly 40 points.
Since Klingenschmitt is now officially an elected Republican legislator, it seems like a good opportunity to take a look back at the radical views he will now be bringing into the Colorado legislature.
Klingenschmitt is a viciously anti-gay theocrat who believes that gay people “want your soul” and may sexually abuse their own children, which is why he says they should face government discrimination since only people who are going to heaven are entitled to equal treatment by the government:
He has declared that judges who strike down gay marriage bans are “imposing the Devil’s law upon people” and are deceiving people into Hell, warning that these rulings will eventually be overturned by Jesus, who will send all gay people to Hell:
Klingenschmitt has declared that the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy should never have been repealed since gay soldiers cannot serve effectively in combat because they are constantly “taking breaks on the combat field to change diapers all because their treacherous sin causes them to lose control of their bowels.” He also proclaims that those who are not welcome in the church should not be entitled to use public restrooms.
Gays, he says, have something inhuman and demonic inside of them, which is why he declares that teaching kids about gay marriage is mental rape and advocates for Christians to print anti-gay Bible verses on the backs of gay wedding photos:
Klingenschmitt is a man who thinks that “Obamacare causes cancer,” that the Bible commands people to own guns in order to “defend themselves against left wing crazies,” that ISIS is a sign of the End Times, and that the FCC is allowing demonic spirits to “molest and visually rape your children” … and he is now an elected Republican legislator in the state of Colorado:
