A Christian university in South Carolina discouraged some students who reported being sexually assaulted as children or on campus from going to the police and made them feel they were responsible for the abuse, a report released on Thursday said.
Bob Jones University's attitude over nearly four decades toward student reports of sexual abuse or assault was "blaming and disparaging," according to nearly 62 percent of survivors who took a confidential survey as part of an independent investigation commissioned by the university.

Based on its investigation, MIT has determined that Lewin’s behavior toward the complainant violated the Institute’s policy on sexual harassment. Following broad consultation among faculty, MIT is indefinitely removing Lewin’s online courses, in the interest of preventing any further inappropriate behavior.
At the time MIT received the complaint, Lewin was not teaching any courses, either on campus or interactively online. Lewin retired from MIT in July 2009 and last taught a course on campus in spring 2008. He last taught an online MITx course in fall 2013.

Stressed-out students got a welcome break from studying on Thursday, thanks to nearly 50 Corgis squeaking, waddling and snuggling their way around Reed College's Student Union.
Bringing the Corgis to campus was the brainchild of Daphne Lyda, a sophomore studio art major who works as a Gray Fund intern in the college's Student Activities Office.

Pope Francis has denied a private audience to the Dalai Lama because it could harm the Holy See's already fraught relations with China, the Vatican said on Friday.
The request was declined "for obvious reasons concerning the delicate situation" with China, a Vatican spokesman said. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, understood the situation, he added.

Brandon Licciardi, the St. Bernard Parish sheriff's deputy indicted Friday (Dec. 12) in the sprawling Darren Sharper rape case, has resigned, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said.
The announcement came less than two hours after Licciardi was charged with aggravated rape, battery with a dangerous weapon, and three counts of human trafficking for sexual purposes in the nine-count indictment that also implicated the former Saints safety and Erik Nunez of Metairie in a string of 2013 sexual assaults.
The nine-count indictment handed up by a grand jury on Friday charged Licciardi with the aggravated rape of a woman on Feb. 2, 2013, and with "battery with a dangerous weapon" upon a different victim on Nov. 17, 2013.
In addition, Licciardi faces three charges of human trafficking for sexual purposes, incidents the indictment said took place between July 1, 2012-Aug. 31, 2012; Aug. 31, 2013; and Sept. 23, 2013.
The last two dates are linked directly with Sharper's rape charges. The former Pro Bowl defensive back was indicted Friday for a simple rape on Aug. 31, 2013, and with two counts of aggravated rape -- along with co-defendant Nunez -- on Sept. 23, 2013.

Sharper, 39, has been jailed in California since Feb. 27, awaiting his next hearing there on charges that he drugged and raped two women in Los Angeles County. He has also been indicted in Arizona on charges he drugged three women and sexually assaulted two of them in their apartment in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe. Similar accusations in Las Vegas remain under investigation.
The Los Angeles charges include two counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felonies. If convicted on the California charges, Sharper could face more than 30 years in state prison.
The Louisiana case now moves to the top of Sharper's concerns. If convicted of aggravated rape in Louisiana, Sharper, Nunez and Licciardi each could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.

Chappelle said he was working on his "first movie" here in New Orleans. He was playing a mugger, he said. He was dressed for the part. The movie set was surrounded with police tape. He ducked under it. Then a police officer set upon him and immediately started choking him.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Dave Chappelle played a mugger in the 1993 movie "Undercover Blues," part of which was filmed in New Orleans. The movie was shot in the summer of 1992. Filming ended the same month Chappelle celebrated his 19th birthday.
One of the women working on the set saw what was happening to the actor and yelled to the police officer that he belonged on the set. After relaxing his hold on Chappelle's neck the police officer said, according to the comedian, "Well why didn't he say something?"
The weirdest thing about being a black man being choked by the police, Chappelle said, is that you don't even wonder why it's happening. You just think, he said, "OK, here we go."

"I've considered retiring from the NFL," Peterson said. "I still made $8 million dollars this year. I've thought about getting back into the real estate (business in Texas) I'm already in. That's something I've been interested in, something I'm involved in. I've thought about getting back into that. I've thought about going after the Olympics -- you only live once. It might be time for me to pursue that, as well. I love playing football, don't get me wrong, but this situation is deeper than that."

Geoffrey Seidel of Scituate complained to the Quincy Patriot Ledger that at the Hanover Mall in suburban Boston kids visiting Santa have to scoot past a Spencer’s Gifts which features beer pong tables and beer bongs in the window.
“I can’t think of a worse place for that,” Seidel told the paper the other day. “It stretches the imagination to find a scenario more diametrically opposed. The innocence of youth and the magical belief in Santa Claus on the one hand and vulgar advertising the joy of alcohol abuse on the other.”
Seidel was just as upset with a poster in the Spencer’s window that shows two women in ugly sweaters that say “Let’s Get Holly, Jolly Hammered” and “Tis the Season to Get Wasted.”
