Brands Saying Bae is the Twitter account we've needed in 2014

by Kwame Opam

Here's a brief look at American slang in 2014. "Bae," if you've never heard the word before, is a term of endearment used to convey affection toward a significant other or some good thing that's caught your eye. In common parlance, it might be used in a sentence like "She's the bae," indicating that the subject is the speaker's lover or dear friend. It's cute, and it's in vogue with the youngs, having exploded on Instagram and Vine in recent months. Unfortunately, it may be time to kill the word off entirely now that #brands have figured out they can sound like the #teens by using it. Exposing these missteps is the Twitter account Brands Saying Bae, and it's high time we commend their all-too-necessary work.

For example: BAE can also refer to BAE System, a British aerospace and security company. AT&T is excited about partnering with BAE. Should anyone be calling BAE the bae? No. Still, we have this embarrassing little faux pas:

Arby's is equally confused:

And the appropriation of urban youth culture doesn't even start there! What is this supposed to mean?

This account, in exposing corporate silliness, is the best we've seen since the CIA burst onto Twitter with its own form of comedic gold. Right now, internet, we implore you. Stop these brands before they bae again.

Man Wants Refund After Buying $650 in Tickets to ‘The Interview’

by gguillotte
A man in Ohio tried to cash in on the buzz surrounding Seth Rogen and James Franco’s new comedy when he purchased $650 in tickets or 50 passes at $13 each to the movie. According to WCPO in Cincinatti, Jason Best learned that a local theater in Clifton was among the 300 theaters to play the controversial film on Christmas day and hoped to re-sell the tickets online at a higher price (a.k.a. he wanted to scalp them). But the plan backfired once Sony announced it was streaming the film online for half the price on sites like YouTube, Hulu and Netflix. Now the man is demanding a refund from the Esquire Theatre. “I thought I’d get my money back because the theater’s website *very clearly* said the tickets were refundable,” Best told WCPO in an email.

Chiefs WRs went a whole season without catching a TD

by Jeff Gray

It's officially official.

The Kansas City Chiefs were oh so close to finally getting a touchdown reception from one of their wide receivers on Sunday. Early in the second quarter against the San Diego Chargers, Dwayne Bowe caught a pass and churned toward the end zone, poised to break the team's bizarre season-long drought. But just inches from the goal line, a defender jarred the ball loose.

It bounced into the end zone, where Travis Kelce, a tight end, recovered it for a score.

The Chiefs threw 18 touchdown passes this season. Not a single one was caught by a wide receiver.

Given that Kansas City operates a conservative passing game geared toward getting the ball to running backs and tight ends, it's not shocking that the wide receiver corps didn't post big numbers -- only two of the team's top six receivers were wideouts. But zero touchdowns?

That means that Bowe got paid $11.485 million this season to not visit the end zone. He did finish second on the team with 60 receptions and 754 yards, but he's getting paid the big bucks to score.

On Sunday he was close ... and yet so far.

How Sonia Sotomayor Became The Supreme Court's Preeminent Defender Of Civil Liberties

A decision handed down by the Supreme Court earlier in December may have disturbing implications for Fourth Amendment rights. But it also marks the emergence of Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's first Supreme Court nominee, as the strongest voice for civil liberties on the court.

2014’s Worst Currency Was…Bitcoin #bitcoin

And 2014’s Worst Currency Was…Bitcoin.

It’s been a bad year for the Russian ruble and a terrible 12 months for the Ukrainian hryvnia. But it’s been a catastrophic 2014 for Bitcoin, the virtual currency. While acknowledging that my currency forecasting prowess means I’m driving a desk rather than tanning on a beach, the gyrations do seem to offer some valuable lessons .

Bitcoin is second only to gold on the list of topics guaranteed to arouse the wrath of the Internet trolls. Yet relentless promotion can’t hide these facts: The digital currency peaked at a value of $1,130 just over a year ago. Its plunge of more than 56 percent in 2014 makes it the world’s worst performing currency this year, according to Bloomberg, which tracks 175 foreign-exchange values.

Newswire: Pharrell and N.E.R.D. recorded a song for the new SpongeBob movie, compare it to The Beatles

by Sam Barsanti

Pharrell is more than just a guy with a big hat who has made an appearance on every popular song of the last few years—his verse on “Let It Go” is incredible—he’s also a member of N.E.R.D., the occasionally defunct rock/funk/whatever band, and the writer behind “Happy,” the most sorrowful dirge of the year. He also happens to be a noted SpongeBob Squarepants fan, and now, through some miraculous series of events, he has managed to combine all of that for his next gig: getting back together with his old pals from N.E.R.D. and writing a song for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.

“Squeeze Me,” a song Pharrell wrote for the upcoming underwater nature film recently appeared online, and Spin has an embed of it. The site describes the song as “fluffy island funk,” but that doesn ...

Ferguson officer placed on unpaid leave after calling Michael Brown memorial 'a pile of trash' - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
The spokesman for the Ferguson, Mo., police department has been placed on unpaid leave after calling the makeshift memorial to slain black teenager Michael Brown a "pile of trash in the middle of the street" after it was destroyed. Timothy Zoll, the Ferguson police public information officer, told the Washington Post that he wasn't sure the destruction of the memorial on Christmas night amounted to a crime. "I don't know that a crime has occurred," Zoll said, according to the paper. "But a pile of trash in the middle of the street? The Washington Post is making a call over this?"

Somabar, A Compact Robotic Bartender That Precisely Mixes Cocktails in Conjunction With a Smartphone App

by Lori Dorn

"Bitters pod"

"LIQUEUR"

Somabar is a kitchen-top robotic bartender that stores different cocktail ingredients and precisely mixes drinks with just the touch of a button on a proprietary smartphone app.

Conventional bottles or containers are bulky, wasteful and boring, that’s why we designed our SOMA PODS. With their friction-fit seal mechanism, SOMA PODS not only store ingredients for your favorite craft cocktails but also detach from your SOMABAR easily. Your airtight Soma Pods plug into a proprietary friction fit seal mechanism allowing for easily interchangeable ingredients while also ensuring your Soma Pods never leak. Liquid is quickly extracted from the Soma Pods using positive displacement pumps to make your cocktail with dead-on accuracy, every time. When you press that button on the app, your SOMABAR will take the ingredients from scratch, infuse bitters (if you are in the mood) and dynamically mix them in precise quantities using positive displacement pumps before pouring out your craft cocktail in less than 5 seconds.

Founders Ammar Jangbarwala and Dylan Purcell-Lowe are currently raising funds through Kickstarter in order to bring Somabar to market by July 2015.

Blocking shots is nothing new to Anthony Davis. But blocks like these make it look like he's spiking volleyballs on the court. Someone might even need to replace that panel in the floor.

Davis' destruction didn't stop at Manu. Tim Duncan also fell victim to the mighty brow:

White Americans who don’t finish high school have better job prospects than black Americans who go to college

by Sonali Kohli
firehose

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Black American college graduates have a higher unemployment rate than white grads.

The Great Recession might be over (in the US, at least) but it has left behind widened racial inequality in unemployment and wealth.

The unemployment rate for white Americans over 25 who had not finished high school was 9.7% in 2013. The unemployment rate for black Americans who went to college but didn’t graduate, meanwhile, was 10.5%. That’s an increase from 2007, before the recession:

This same trend can be seen among recent college graduates. Unemployment for black graduates between the ages of 22 and 27 was at 12.4% in 2013, compared to 5.6% for all college grads in that age range, according to a May report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research (pdf). The number was even lower for white college graduates in the age range—4.9%, the study’s co-author told the New York Times.

That’s a gap of 7.5 percentage points. Compare that to 2007, before the recession, when the gap still existed but was much smaller—1.4 percentage points. Black Americans with college degrees then had a 4.6% unemployment rate, while white Americans with undergraduate degrees were at 3.2%, the Times notes.

The recession doesn’t just affect people coming out of college. The median net worth of white households was 10 times that of black households’ median wealth in 2007, and 13 times the median wealth of black households in 2013, according to a recent Pew report.

Why are white Americans recovering from the recession so much better than black Americans?

The CEPR study points out that the recession made it difficult for all young people to get jobs, and racial prejudices have always skewed the labor market against black applicants in the US—employers are less likely to call back applicants with names that sound African American.

Additionally, black US graduates who do work are more likely to be overqualified than other Americans. Of the recent black college graduates (age 22-27) working in 2013, 55.9% did not require a four-year degree for their jobs, up from 45% in 2007. For all recent college grads, that number has hovered around 44% for the last decade, and was at 45% in 2013, according to the report.

And even black Americans who are wealthy recovered at a lower level than white Americans, at least in part because the two groups invest their money differently. Stocks, which white Americans invest in more so than black Americans, have done well since the recession ended, while black Americans tend to pursue more conservative investments like certificates of deposit, life insurance and savings bonds.
