BOOM! TRIPLE FLAG! Take a photo of this flag, make it a new flag and fly it from the highest point you can find. It's everything the ACC was build and nurtured on: Cold beer, Bojangles and North-by-god-Carolina.

Spend more than an hour in this state and you know this sucker should be flying from the top of every municipal building around.

Wait ... did they just print "COLD BEER" on a Netherlands flag?

Facebook Disabled Juliana Brown Eyes-Clifford's Account. Again

by Aura Bogado
Facebook Disabled Juliana Brown Eyes-Clifford's Account. Again

Juliana Brown Eyes-Clifford was one of the people I wrote about in a feature story this week that outlines the many ways in which Facebook's "authentic names" policy penalizes people with Native American names. The social network has suspended Natives' accounts because it deemed their legitimate names as fake. Facebook has also arbitrarily changed Native users' names. In one case I found that white supremacists triggered the suspension of a high-profile author's account by reporting her name as fake. They called it "ghost activism."

The bass guitarist for the rock group Scatter Their Own says she had her name challenged by Facebook about two years ago. To submit her government-issued ID to the social media network for reinstatement Brown Eyes-Clifford had to leave the Pine Ridge Reservation and purchase a printer/scanner. Facebook accepted her ID, but changed her last name. She's listed as "BrownEyes-Clifford," not Brown Eyes-Clifford.

On Thursday, just a day after Colorlines published the story that includes Brown Eyes-Clifford, her Facebook account was once again disabled. Here's a screenshot she provided Thursday from her cell phone:

03-13-15-juliana-1.jpg

Brown Eyes-Clifford contacted me, saying, "I feel as if I am being deliberately targeted again because I spoke out against Facebook." Brown Eyes-Clifford lost access to two pages she administers on Facebook, including the Scatter Their Own fan page. Her husband, Scotti Clifford, is technically an administrator on the page, but he also lost access to it since it was his wife who first created the page. Scatter Their Own is currently touring and is headed to SXSW. Losing access to its Facebook page meant losing access to contacts, dates and confirmations. "Our SXSW tour is about to begin and I handle all our marketing and social media promotion for our band Scatter Their Own," Brown Eyes-Clifford said on Thursday. "I just don't know what to do."

All the communication I'd had with Brown Eyes-Clifford on Facebook was also deleted from my personal message box.

03-15-15-juliana-2.jpg

On Thursday Brown Eyes-Clifford stopped what she was doing in the middle of her tour to re-submit her government-issued ID to Facebook. Today at about 11:30 a.m. ET, Brown Eyes-Clifford received a notice that her Facebook account had been reinstated. Her name remains misspelled.

When asked why Brown Eyes-Clifford's account was suspended, a Facebook spokesperson who had previously talked to me on grounds that we not use their name emailed me today that the company doesn't comment on individual accounts.

Read this university president’s candid reaction on Twitter to frat-house racism on his campus

by Sonali Kohli
Maybe not the most welcoming place.

A Kappa Sigma fraternity member at University of Maryland, College Park is being investigated by the university for a racist, sexist email sent to six other students at the school over a year ago. Early this morning, the university’s president put out an official statement about the school’s response to the email, which references raping women during rush week and uses offensive language to describe black, Indian and Asian women.

I condemn the reprehensible email. Read my statement here: http://t.co/OnxxncQ5l3

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

President Loh followed that tweet with others, which he said were not him speaking as college president, but “as a person.” This is what he said:

There are times when I feel compelled to speak out as a person, and not as a university president. This is one of those times.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

The January 2014 email that emerged a few days ago has shaken me.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

The utter disregard for decency, the racist invective, the mindless disparaging of sexual consent, has left me angry and profoundly saddened

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

A president, I will of course ensure due process and protect the free speech guaranteed by our Constitution.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

It is one of our nation's core values that the government should not be able to tell us what we can and cannot say.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

Protecting speech, however, does not mean agreeing with it.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

And quite honestly, I am struggling with justifying this email as free speech.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

It has hurt and offended members of our campus family. Including me.

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

Where does free speech and hate speech collide? What should prevail?

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

What justification can we have that tacitly condones this kind of hate?

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

Then Loh asked for student input.

I want to engage in a conversation with you. Are some of you feeling the same way? Post your thoughts, your point of view. #LohChat

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

Social media can sometimes be uncivil. Let's try to use it to talk about this important issue, to make things better, to heal. #LohChat

— Wallace D. Loh (@presidentloh) March 13, 2015

@presidentloh How has this shaken you? Why are you so surprised? Ask any black student and they tell you this has been going on.

— Uchiha Mufasa (@_brvndvn_) March 13, 2015

.@presidentloh freedom of speech should not be used as an excuse. no one's opinion should be allowed to disrespect anyone's existence…

— Babette Newman (@babette_joan) March 13, 2015

How is it that UMD is forced to take sexual assault training only to ignore the blatant threat of sexual assault months later? #LohChat

Preschool Mastermind is a Brooklyn-based preschool experience for adults. The project was founded by Michelle Joni and is a month-long program Joni says is an effort to get “grownups to re-learn the basics, and experience the ::magic:: of life as it was originally intended.”

Potential students must fill out and turn in an application by hand, and are asked to select the price for the course on a sliding scale from $333 to $999.

Joni was interviewed for a special report by Barcroft TV that looks inside the school–which is based in Joni’s Brooklyn apartment.

Newswire: Prince released a surprise single to kick off his surprise tour

by Alex McCown

'It’s a cover of a saccharine Christian ballad by Nichole Nordeman, so naturally Prince reworked it quite a bit.'

Given that he’s decided to go on a surprise tour this summer, essentially popping up to play a show whenever and wherever he feels like it at a moment’s notice, it’s no surprise that Prince would do the same with releasing new music. To mark the start of his four night opening stint in Louisville, KY, the Purple One debuted a new track, “What If?”, on radio station WFPK. It’s a cover of a saccharine Christian ballad by Nichole Nordeman, so naturally Prince reworked it quite a bit. It’s got an arena-ready intro, dueling vocals by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl drummer Hannah Welton, and sounds like a lost nugget from a mid-’80s erotic thriller. Much like Prince himself.

Watch This: Maggie Smith in her Prime, long before Downton Abbey

by Gwen Ihnat

Every day, Watch This offers staff recommendations inspired by a new movie coming out that week. This week: The forthcoming release of Ethan Hawke’s Seymour: An Introduction—and the recent release of the excellent Approaching The Elephant—has us thinking back on other movies about teaching.

The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie (1969)

Is there an actor today with more longevity than Maggie Smith? While she may or may not be parting from Downton Abbey, at the age of 80, she still does not appear to be slowing down. Smith is now iconic after such memorable roles as Charlotte in A Room With A View and Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, to say nothing of The First Wives Club, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotels, an Oscar for California Suite, even Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood. But even Maggie Smith had to start somewhere, and the ...

According to TV Line, the rapper (real name M-E-T-H-O-D Man) will add to a growing TV acting resume that includes The Wire, CSI, and Burn Notice, playing “a major badass with the Warrior Kings street gang” who enters the 36 chambers of Tom Selleck when he’s hauled in for suspicion of murder. The detectives will investigate charges that Method Man fucking tied his victim to a bedpost with their ass cheeks spread out and shit, put a hanger on a fucking stove and let that shit sit there for like half an hour, took it off and stuck it in slow, like, “Tsssssss.”

The episode concludes with a shocking, emotional scene where ...

Tiny Baby Chameleons Make a Big Impression on All Who Encounter Them at the Taronga Zoo in Sidney, Australia

by Lori Dorn

Veiled Chameleons Pencil Tip

The tiny veiled chameleon hatchlings who were recently born at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia have made a gigantic impression on all who have encountered them despite their diminutive size.

Taronga has welcomed more than 20 baby chameleons, with the last of three clutches of eggs hatching this week. About 5cm long, the hatchlings are the first born at the Zoo in over five years. Currently housed in a special temperature-controlled area behind the scenes at Taronga’s Reptile World, the hatchlings have begun feeding on crickets and turning on a bright green colour display for keepers. Reptile supervisor, Michael McFadden said the chameleons, which are native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, would be mature and able to showcase their full colour palette within a year. “Veiled Chameleons are a visually amazing species that we’re fortunate to have at Taronga. While they’re not endangered, they do play an important educational role in helping us to get people excited about reptiles and reptile conservation.

Facebook fugitive attached GPS monitor to a “motorized contraption”

by David Kravets

The fugitive accused of trying to scam Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg out of half his fortune sliced off his GPS ankle monitor and affixed it to a crudely built contraption in his rural New York residence "in order to give the appearance that he was still present and moving within his home."

That's what prosecutors said in court papers as the hunt widened for Paul Ceglia, his family, and dog.

US Marshals went to check on Ceglia in Wellsville and discovered his ankle monitor Sunday but not the 41-year-old defendant whose federal fraud criminal trial was scheduled for May 4. His wife, Iasia, and his two sons, 10 and 11 years old, have also vanished, as has the family's Jack Russell terrier.

NY state assemblyman introduces bill banning many vaccines

by John Timmer

While many of the bills introduced in state legislatures attempt to interfere with science education, there are a number that, through misguided fears, attempt to eliminate some of the benefits of scientific or technological developments. These efforts are often focused on radiation, such as that from Wi-Fi and cell phones, but they can target just about any item that's the subject of unsubstantiated worries (and the problems aren't limited to the US states, either).

Genetically modified organisms are another technological development that, by all indications, are safe for human consumption. But some of the public is uneasy with the technology, and naturally there are legislators who are either members of or representatives of this constituency. New York state Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti (D) appears to be one of them and, in his rush to keep the public safe from genetically modified organisms, is now trying to outlaw major public safety developments: vaccines.

Abinanti has introduced a bill that would outlaw the use of any vaccine that contains a genetically modified organism. This would include any organism that has had genes deleted or added to it, unless that addition occurred through a process like selective breeding or hybridization.

Machine That Tracks Satelitte Movement With #Raspberrypi #piday @Raspberry_Pi

Satelliten – a machine tracking activities in lower earth orbit from Quadrature on Vimeo.

Satelliten is an Arduino and Raspberry Pi controlled machine that shows the movement of satellites at scale. via creativeapplications

Created by Berlin based studio Quadrature, Satelliten is a custom build machine that brings the invisible movement of passing satellites in lower orbit to a tangible medium and scale.

For a long time, maps and atlases used to be one of the only sources for geographical knowledge. Now the paths of the satellites start to form on top of the familiar neighbourhoods, thus setting the normally invisible traffic in relation to our usual habitat. But as time passes the lines of the satellites will obliterate the well-known streets and cities, overwriting not only the information the map originally contained but as well the marks left by the preceding satellites.

The paths these satellites form on top of the familiar neighbourhoods but majority of these objects revolve our planet in 200km to 2000km height, with an orbital period of 90 to 130 minutes and they are most of the time invisible to human eye. Their positioning data is well known and in a square of approximately 10cm², the Satelliten machine traces their lines in real time until the far away object leaves our horizon again. After a while only a black square is left forming a temporal window, showing the seemingly arbitrary but highly structured activities in lower earth orbit.

Created with Arduino and Raspberry Pi.

Chrome for Android to push Web app adoption with “Add to home screen” popup

by Ron Amadeo
firehose

'To stop the feature from driving users insane, the popup will only show if you are a repeat visitor to the site.'

ha ha. oh boy

Chrome for Android has long had support for installable Web apps via the "WebApp manifest" that developers can add to their pages. Actually installing a Web app has always been tougher than necessary, though, since the feature is buried in the Chrome menu as the "add to home screen" item. The Chrome team's solution has been to create an "App Install Banner," a site-triggered popup that prompts the user to add a page to his or her home screen. The feature is going live in Chrome 42, currently in beta.

To stop the feature from driving users insane, the popup will only show if you are a repeat visitor to the site. The requirements are listed as "The user has visited your site twice over two separate days during the course of two weeks."

It's Chrome that makes this determination, which should stop developers from gaming the system. If you dismiss the popup, it won't show again unless you clear your history. Google wants to strike a balance between informing users of the feature when relevant and not annoying them with home screen popups. "We will likely be changing all the heuristics over time," the company notes.
