US National Counterterrorism Center Warns That Urban Exploration Could Aid Terrorists

Urban Exploration

In November of last year the National Counterterrorism Center distributed an internal document warning that urban explorers are exposing security vulnerabilities that could aid terrorists. Ominously titled “Urban Exploration Offers Insight on Infrastructure Vulnerabilities,” the one-sheet warns that the photos, videos, and diagrams posted by urban explorers could be used by terrorists to “remotely identify and surveil potential targets.” It also outlines several urban exploration scenarios—bridges, construction sites, rooftops, and so on—and lists the security vulnerabilities that are exposed for each site. The document ends with an advisory to report “any suspicious UE activity” to the nearest “State and Major Area Fusion Center and to the local FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.” The document was posted online earlier this week by Public Intelligence.

It’s certainly a very alarmist view of urban exploration, but then again the National Counterterrorism Center is probably not known for its sunny outlook. However as Wired points out, blueprints and other sensitive information are available in other public venues like libraries (to say nothing of Google Street View…) Urban explorer Bradley Garrett of Place Hacking offers a decidedly different view of urban exploration:

You know what your best defence against terrorism is? A bunch of people who love their city, paying attention, with cameras. That’s a perfect description of urban explorers.

Garrett has much more to say on the matter in his comment at Public Intelligence.

Internet Census 2012, An Illegally Obtained Animated Map of the Web

by Kimber Streams

carna botnet

An anonymous individual undertook a massive census of the internet by creating a botnet that infected some 420,000 computers. This “Carna Botnet” only targeted Linux machines with enough processing speed and RAM that used weak passwords like admin, root, or no password at all. The resulting maps accurately show the remainder of IPv4 internet, which will continue to dwindle as more users adopt the current IPv6 standard. Though the individual’s methods were highly illegal in a number of countries, they ensured that the program ran at low priority so as not to interfere with a user’s system or internet connection, and even left their email address in infected systems should anyone have questions about the project.

I did not want to ask myself for the rest of my life how much fun it could have been or if the infrastructure I imagined in my head would have worked as expected. I saw the chance to really work on an Internet scale, command hundred thousands of devices with a click of my mouse, portscan and map the whole Internet in a way nobody had done before, basically have fun with computers and the Internet in a way very few people ever will. I decided it would be worth my time.

Tilda Swinton as 12th Doctor casting update: Up 2 points as she clearly demonstrates her free time is available

Tilda Swinton ??? MoMA ???

At the Museum of Modern Art in New York City today, actress Tilda Swinton surprised visitors by appearing unannounced in a unique live performance art piece called “The Maybe.” The piece simply displayed Swinton sleeping in a glass box, with only a pair of glasses, a carafe of water, and linen-covered bedding. Gothamist reports that the museum has been planning the performance for seven years and that Swinton first started performing the piece back in 1995 at London’s Serpentine Gallery. Throughout the year, Swinton will perform “The Maybe” at MoMA about six more times but at random times and in different museum locations.

Strangereal, the World of Ace Combat

by markwallace

Mobius squadron forever

Strangereal provides the backdrop for the Ace Combat series of games from Namco. Its geography was created by a massive asteroid, “possibly the biggest in the whole Ace Combat world,” which broke into a thousand pieces just before it struck the Earth on July 3, 1999.  One can imagine this world map (submitted by Friend of the Atlas @laughmech) being pulled down windowshade-style at the front of a classroom to begin a geography lesson somewhere on the surface of Ace Combat’s alternate Earth.

by Lauren Davis

yet another generation learns not to trust Star Wars

When Lucasfilm Animation announced earlier this month that it would be wrapping up Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the news was bittersweet. We've enjoyed the animated series, but it's had a good run, and we were anxious to learn what becomes of the characters in the wake of the emotional season finale. But now TheForce.net is reporting that the studio will release just two more arcs of the series, and neither will provide "clear resolutions" for Ahsoka Tano.
