Breach of contract suit against EA from Madden NFL dev going to trial in June

by Megan Farokhmanesh

By Megan Farokhmanesh on Apr 29, 2013 at 7:30p

Electronic Arts will stand trial against Robin Antonick, one of the designers on Madden NFL, for allegedly breaching a contract and denying Antonick unpaid royalties, according to a recent press release.

The decision was made by California federal judge Charles Breyer who "has serious concerns about the fraud claim," but will view evidence to make a better ruling, Businessweek reports. This was EA's final attempt to dismiss the lawsuit initiated by Antonick in 2011. Antonick claims that he signed a contract with EA in 1986 and conceived and developed the original John Madden Football for Commodore 64, MS-DOS and Apple II.

Antonick ended his time with the John Madden franchise in 1991, but under the alleged contract should still receive royalties for derivative works. This includes Madden NFL 11, which allegedly includes material based off Antonick's original concepts.

A pre-trial is planned for May 20, while the actual trial is currently scheduled for June 17. We have contacted EA for comment and will update accordingly.

'Soul Fjord' is Airtight's next game, Ouya exclusive

'Soul Fjord' is Airtight's next game, Ouya exclusive
The next game from designer Kim Swift and Airtight Games (Quantum Conundrum) will be Soul Fjord. Fusing '70s funk with Norse mythology, the game stars Magnus Jones, an afro-sporting Viking, who makes his way through procedurally generated dungeons and engages in rhythm-based combat.

And if you were wondering: yes, this is Airtight's Ouya-exclusive project that was announced earlier this year. Swift referred to it as a "console exclusive" when speaking to IGN, so it's possible that mobile and PC ports are still on the table.

A developer diary was released alongside the announcement. At the very least, the eclectic cultural mash-up makes for interesting aesthetics, though there isn't much to speak of in terms of gameplay.

The Ouya is slated to officially launch on June 4, while Soul Fjord is "coming soon."

“On Thursday, Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced a court-ordered agreement with T-Mobile to correct advertising that promised consumers no annual contracts but which had hidden charges for early termination.
The court order was signed by T-Mobile and is effective nationwide, ensuring the company “clearly communicates the limitations” of its new “no-contract” wireless service plans. The agreement also allows customers “duped” by the deceptive ads to end their contracts with no penalty, according to Ferguson’s office.”

A 2500 year old mummy that had some amazing tattoos.

WHAT.

NO FUCKING WAY.

YO HOLD ON.

IT GETS BETTER.

This mummy, found in the  Altai mountains of Siberia, is actually that of a young woman who died at about the age of twenty-five; she is thought to have been a member of the Pazyryk tribe.

She was buried with six horses and two similarly-tattooed men (the horned griffon that decorates her shoulder also appears on the man buried closest to her, covering most of his right side), possibly escorts. She was also wearing a horse-hair wig, silk, and elaborate boots, which is all a level of ceremony that would have likely only been accorded to a woman of high rank. You didn’t get inked like this unless you were very important, and had worked your way up to that importance.

…Hence, of course, the references to her by researchers as ‘The Ukok Princess,’ although due to the lack of weapons in her grave they have concluded that the woman was in fact a healer or a storyteller.

And now I’m all consumed with curiosity: Who was she? What amazing things did she accomplish? Why these symbols, and what did they mean? Who were the two men alongside her?

The most informative article about it can be found here, although I would completely eat up any other information you guys could find.

Uncover gives your MacBook's lid a new, Apple-less kind of glow

by Darren Murph

Uncover gives your MacBook's lid a new kind of glow

Etsy stickers adorning your MacBook's lid, oft making a cute play on the presence of that glowing Apple? That's so 2012. Uncover, a Dutch company showcasing its talents here at The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam this week, has crafted a new method of customizing one's MacBook lid. And, perhaps most importantly, it involves the seamless removal of the Apple logo altogether. In essence, these guys use a specialized laser cutting process that can etch out anything your brain can muster -- from band logos to company mantras. And, as you'll see in the gallery below, the Apple logo doesn't have to be a part of the equation.

The outfit will take in any aluminum-faced MacBook from around the world, and once it lands in Holland, you'll typically see it headed back to your domicile within four to five days. If you're selecting one of Uncover's designs, you can have your machine tweaked for as little as €249 (around $325), while completely custom work starts at €599 ($780). (And yes, you can just buy a totally new Mac from Uncover as well.) We spoke to Jasper Middendorp, the company's CEO, and he confessed that only MacBooks are being accepted due to Apple's unique backlighting arrangement. They're obviously keen to offer similar work for PCs, but to date, every one he has seen blocks or covers the backlight in some way. For those looking to get it on the fun, allow the source link below to be your guide.

Hands-On: Knights of Pen And Paper +1

by Adam Smith
firehose

random TARDIS

By Adam Smith on April 29th, 2013 at 12:00 pm.

Knights of Pen and Paper +1 is the Paradox-published PC version of a handheld meta-RPG. At a recent preview event, I created a party led by a hipster paladin and headed into the lands of clichés and catacombs. This is what I discovered.

There was a slightly awkward moment in the presentation that preceded the hands-on session. After introducing the basic concept of the game and showing a few screenshots to illustrate how combat, shopping and travel work (IN THE GAME), the Paradox producer at the front of the room asked people to raise their hands if they had ever indulged in tabletop roleplaying.

Silence. No movement.

He asked again, urging people not to be shy, and almost every hand in the room was raised. Well, half of them. I don’t think anyone threw both hands in the air and yelled out, ‘RIFT was my youth, I tell you, the very essence of my adolescence’. My hands remained on the keyboard, as I surreptitiously scrolled through the other games installed on the Paradox Steam account (CK II: Old Gods alpha, if you’re wondering, more of which soon). I have never Masqueraded as a Vampire or biffed a dragon on the bonce while consulting a rulebook, and suddenly that made me an outsider.

I was in some twilight zone that had become the precise social opposite of high school.

It isn’t essential to have a full understanding of D&D and its brethren to appreciate the delightful concept at the heart of Knights of Pen and Paper. It’s an RPG in which the characters are playing an RPG. The player controls a disparate group of jocks, nerds, hipsters and the like, who begin the adventure in a dungeon/basement, sitting around a table in a group. Their personalities and surroundings impact on their abilities in the game, so it made sense to have the little brother play as a rogue because his constant attention seeking gives him higher initiative – handy to get in those critical strikes early.

While the pixel visuals won’t be everyone’s cup of brewed leaves, I find them a charming example of the style, and they allow for a great deal of reference and invention without huge expenditure of resources. There are non-specific allusions to RPG mainstays, such as plagues of rats and bats for puny level 1 heroes to grind against, but also specific nods and winks to games and the wider culture that is pop. I spotted an IT Crowd pinball machine in a screenshot, which pleased me an inordinate amount.

And that partly sums up the appeal of this meta-RPG, which began its life as a mobile and tablet game. Although it contains a great deal of content, some of which will no doubt be challenging at the higher level end of the adventure, the pleasure is not in learning systems but in sampling the strange and intentionally artificial storytelling.

The first settlement, following a dungeon escape, is called Default Town and it’s as bland as the name suggests, but the games master (also player controlled to an extent) starts plucking stories from memory, with little care for cohesive world-building. There are arcade machines spewing out enemies in the shape of enemies from all of gaming’s yesterdecades and roughly sketched equivalents to creatures from other RPGs. The cumulative effect is like flicking through a particularly nerdy friend’s DVD collection and bookcase. If it’s on the shelves, it’s going to end up in the game when he/she runs out of other ideas. This is an RPG made by the dweeb Keyser Söze, cribbing details from his surroundings.

New characters and classes are unlocked as the player progresses across the world map, completing story quests. In each location, it’s also possible to have the dungeon master create sidequests, either to collect specific objects that are linked to monster types, or to grind for experience. A simple menu provides a choice of objectives and difficulty is a case of selecting the number and type of creatures that stand between the heroes and completion. Along with experience and items, there is also cash to collect, and it can be spent to purchase items for the roleplayers and for their characters.

That creates a disconnect from the theme that irks me more than is perhaps reasonable. How is the money that my hipster paladin plucks from a rat corpse in the make believe world available to buy snacks, drinks, pets, decorations or furniture in the real world? I’d prefer to have two types of currency, with the real world variety earned by characters doing their day job. Maybe they’d have to take time out from the game, meaning parties had to make up the numbers by recruiting less experienced roleplayers with crappy characters while their star mage sodded off to do his paper round. Makes sense to me.

As it is, new players can be recruited, using the money earned in the game. At present, it’s also possible to purchase extra in-game currency via micro transactions, although it’s not clear whether that feature is a remnant of the port not yet excised from the preview version. There were also instances of leftover text requesting that the player tapped the screen rather than clicking the mouse but the code isn’t final.

Players of the handheld version will know exactly what to expect. As the +1 suggests, this new edition adds content rather than changing anything fundamental. Along with more of the same, there are also dungeons that dwell at the upper end of the difficulty ramp and a new game + mode for a second playthrough.

With its simple menu-based combat and the player’s ability to set the pace of progress using the dungeon master, Knights of Pen and Paper is a snack game. Something to play while listening to a favourite podcast or watching a televisual broadcast of a sporting event. In fact, I wish I could have it on my computer right now to while away the early parts of each frame in the World Snooker Championship. I know myself too well though – I claim I’ve discovered a mild diversion or distraction, and as long as I enjoy the theme and the wit, I’ll keep pushing buttons and watching numbers rise until I’ve seen every screen of content it has to offer.

It would be fair to ask if the PC is a natural habitat for such a game, which would so perfectly fill the time spent on public transport or the toilet. I welcome more games that require minimal effort to sit alongside the maddeningly complex simulations that dominate my desktop. Right now I’m playing yet another time-consuming, mind-pounding historical strategy game and, as the night turns to morning and I’m still slouching before the screen, I’d be happy to alt-tab into a colourful little world where the only pressing concern is buying the next slice of pizza.

Willie Nelson Auditions For ‘The Hobbit 2′ To Star as Gandalf

by Rusty Blazenhoff

So, that’s it Peter, you can hire me and fire that Ian McKellen guy, he’s a good actor…but, hell, I’m Willie Nelson.

Country music legend Willie Nelson is celebrating his 80th birthday and auditioning for director Peter Jackson to capture the role of Gandalf in The Hobbit 2 from Ian McKellan. Willie’s son, artist and musician Micah Nelson, joined his dad in the smoke-filled audition to humorously sing a little, “Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be Orcs…” Willie Nelson and Family recently released a new album titled “Let’s Face The Music And Dance” which is available to purchase on Amazon. Happy Birthday Willie! Good luck getting the part!

Look out Ian McKellen — country legend Willie Nelson has his heart set on playing Gandalf in the “The Hobbit 2″ — and he’s smokin’ good, man.

Spider-Man crime wave spreads to Hollywood Boulevard

by Kevin Melrose

spidey-hollywood

Marvel’s Superior Spider-Man marketing plans have gone too far.

First there was the confrontation in Times Square between the wall-crawler and a woman who wouldn’t hand over a couple of bucks for a photo, and now he stands accused of stealing $6,000 in Hollywood. Sure, that’s a little outside of his usual stomping grounds, but times are tough.

NBC New York reports that Hollywood police are on the lookout for a ol’ web-head after he allegedly stole a paper bag filled with $6,000 in cash and credit card information from a Starlines Tour Bus who was leaving the company’s Hollywood Boulevard headquarters on Friday. Since then, police have been rounding up Spider-Man impersonators who were seen in the area of TLC Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman’s) at the time of the crime.

That may not be an easy task, as Hollywood Boulevard is lousy with people in superhero costumes (of course, I have no idea why the cops think the guy would steal six grand and then head back on the street in costume). But they’ll have help: Other impersonators, including Superman, Batman and Catwoman, have offered to help in the search.

Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo takes over the city

An excited Mayor of Calgary in his “Mayor Who” TARDIS T-shirt, tweets about meeting the cast of Torchwood: "Squee!"

A Canadian prairie city best known for it’s petroleum industry and western motif is showing it’s geeky side this weekend.

The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (CCEE) is currently taking over the city in full force, and the people and even it’s mayor are fully embracing it.   All of the CCEE’s 56,000 tickets were gone before it even started.

The event kicked off Friday morning with a parade that weaved it’s way though the downtown core all the way to Olympic Plaza.  The parade was marshalled by the cast of Torchwood, who led a contingency of cosplayers, guests and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi gleefully rolled along in a Delorean, sporting a very McFly red vest.   At the plaza, where they were greeted by an army of Storm Troopers, where Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi white-hatted various Expo guests, which is Calgary’s unique equivalent to being awarded the key to the city.

Nenshi continued to let his geeky side show in this Twitter post, freaking out over being with the Torchwood stars.

The first night wrapped up with a concert featuring nerdrock band Kirby Krackle, who knew how to please the comic loving fans through fun catch, and largely inspired comic tunes, crooning about Green Lantern and Emma Frost. Then main act Weird Al Yankovic took to the stage with his signature accordion and crowd pleasing parodies. He had numerous costume changes, including a rather exquisite plush tiger lounge suit, which he wore when he ran out into the audience and flirtatiously rubbed up against various fans.

BioShock Infinite's first downloadable content pack could introduce a new AI companion character, as hinted at by 2K Games senior animator Michael Shahan's LinkedIn profile.

Shahan's experience includes an entry for "BioShock Infinite DLC1," under which he lists animation and R&D for "a new AI companion character." It's unclear if this new character would replace the game's current companion, Elizabeth, for a short time or simply act as an addition. We've contacted 2K for comment and will update accordingly.

A season pass for BioShock Infinite is currently available for $19.99 and grants buyers access to three additional content packs. DLC is expected to add additional story material, weapons and skills.

BioShock Infinite launched for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC March 26. During an interview with Polygon, BioShock Creator Ken Levine revealed that early in the game's creation, designers frequently requested that Elizabeth be cut.
