Star Trek Into Dumbness
firehose"The result is somewhat insulting to actual Star Trek fans, because nobody enjoys inept pandering. And it falls short of being a good action movie, because it actively lowers the stakes over and over, instead of raising them.
This is a film that's simultaneously trying too hard and aiming too low. In parts, it's ridiculously fun and there are some crackerjack sequences that work astonishingly well. (Along with some sequences that fall terribly flat.) Simon Pegg nearly steals the thing. Benedict Cumberbatch is mostly great. But the film is let down by its nonsensical plot and pulled punches. ... (Chris Pine has) gotten some gravitas from somewhere, maybe from hanging out with Benedict Cumberbatch."

The new Star Trek movie isn't a terrible film. Star Trek Into Darkness has some bravura action scenes, and some brilliant comic bits. But it's also aggressively, tragically stupid. It's not even a great popcorn film, because it fails to deliver on its own promises. And it's not half as good as J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek.

How the Battle Over 'Star Trek' Rights Killed J.J. Abrams' Grand Ambitions | The Wrap Movies
firehose"Bad Robot asked CBS to stop making products featuring the original cast"
ROFL LOL
Competing ambitions between Paramount, CBS and Abrams’ production company Bad Robot over merchandising surrounding the first film in the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise led the director to curtail plans to turn the series into a multi-platform experience that spanned television, digital entertainment and comic books, according to an individual with knowledge of the dispute.
“J.J. just threw up his hands,” the individual told TheWrap. “The message was, ‘Why set up all this when we’ll just be competing against ourselves?’ The studio wanted to please Bad Robot, but it was allowing CBS to say yay or nay when it came to what was happening with the ‘Star Trek’ products.”
…
Bad Robot asked CBS to stop making products featuring the original cast, but talks broke down over money. The network was making roughly $20 million a year on that merchandise and had no incentive to play nice with its former corporate brother, the individual said. In response, the company scaled back its ambitions to have “Star Trek’s” storylines play out with television shows, spin-off films and online components, something Abrams had been eager to accomplish.

firehosetl;dr: "Yes. In fact, in Vancouver they created something called "The Gilly-Board" which was a ramped apple box (what actors normally stand on to raise their height) so that I could be walking beside him and we could stand next to each other so that we would be approximately the same height. Apparently it still exists and is used for other productions, and is still called the Gilly-Board."

Yahoo reportedly eyeing Tumblr for possible $1 billion acquisition
firehosegreat
Is Yahoo trying to acquire Tumblr? Earlier today, All Things D reported that the two companies were in "serious" talks about some kind of deal, and now Adweek is saying that Yahoo is looking to do a straight-up acquisition. The deal could reach as high as $1 billion, say Adweek’s sources, putting it in the same league as Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram last year.
Yahoo has been working to capture younger users — the same 18- to 24-year-olds that make up Tumblr’s core user base. Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman recently noted that one of the company’s challenges has been its aging demographic, writes All Things D.
Since taking control of Yahoo, CEO Marissa Mayer has pursued a string of acquisitions, including Summly, Astrid, Jybe, and others. In addition to the failed Dailymotion acquisition, the company has also been rumored to be looking at Hulu, although Mayer has previously said that the company is shopping for smaller targets valued in the $100 million range.
But if younger users are what Yahoo is after, it’s hard to picture a better target than Tumblr. Adweek notes that the deal could also be just what the microblogging service is looking for, pointing to investors’ hopes for a big cashout, and Yahoo’s huge ad sales team, which could help Tumblr scale up revenues.
