Think your Skype messages get end-to-end encryption? Think again

by Dan Goodin
firehose

via Overbey

If you think the private messages you send over Skype are protected by end-to-end encryption, think again. The Microsoft-owned service regularly scans message contents for signs of fraud, and company managers may log the results indefinitely, Ars has confirmed. And this can only happen if Microsoft can convert the messages into human-readable form at will.

With the help of independent privacy and security researcher Ashkan Soltani, Ars used Skype to send four Web links that were created solely for purposes of this article. Two of them were never clicked on, but the other two—one beginning in HTTP link and the other HTTPS—were accessed by a machine at 65.52.100.214, an IP address belonging to Microsoft. For those interested in the technical details, the log line looked like this:

'65.52.100.214 - - [16/May/2013 11:30:10] "HEAD /index.html?test_never_clicked HTTP/1.1" 200 -'

The results—which were similar but not identical to those reported last week by The H Security—prove conclusively that Microsoft not only has ability to peer at the plaintext sent from one Skype user to another, but that the company regularly flexes that monitoring muscle.

The Cronut is a donut-croissant hybrid invented by New York City pastry chef Dominique Ansel. These hybrids have flaky layers like a croissant but are shaped and filled like a donut. Cronuts are available now in several flavors at Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood (189 Spring Street) but get there early, people are lining up early to get a taste and they have been selling out each day. Paige Beaumont of Thrillist went to the bakery to taste test the cronut and says, “you can rest assured that the icing-topped, flakey, sweet, cream-filled treats definitely ‘back up the hype’ and are ‘holy sh*t good’.” Niko Triantafillou of Serious Eats New York also tried it and says it’s “a deep-fried dessert lover’s dream.”

' It’s the sort of stunt you might expect his dopey “Hangover” character Alan Garner to pull, but Galifianakis has been close pals with Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist, a laundrywoman in Los Angeles, for almost 20 years.

The generous star struck up such a close bond with the 87-year-old laundry worker that he decided to get her a cozy apartment and pay her rent when he found out she was homeless two years ago.

Haist told the Daily News she will be Galifianakis’s date for the Monday premiere of the new “Hangover” film in Los Angeles.

Asked if she's mistaken for Zach's grandmother, Haist joked that she's mistaken for his girlfriend.'

The comic actor met Los Angeles laundry woman Elizabeth 'Mimi' Haist almost 20 years ago. After learning she was homeless, he got her a one-bedroom apartment and began paying her rent.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Watch "Diaper Money," The Lonely Island's new ode to adulthood

no more rap only rap parody beat

Every Wednesday for a couple of weeks now, The Lonely Island has been premiering videos for cuts off its forthcoming record, The Wack Album. While it’s not Wednesday, it is YouTube’s Comedy Week, and so the group has just dropped a new clip a couple of days early.

This time around, Jorma, Akiva, and Andy take on heavy adult issues with “Diaper Money.” While “I Fucked My Aunt” and “Spring Break Anthem” extolled the virtues of incest and gay marriage, “Diaper Money” reps hard for solid family life, “wife pussy,” and purchasing cemetery plots in advance.

The Wack Album is out June 11.

Artemis spaceship bridge simulator

by gguillotte

would buy and play over the internet with anyone here

Artemis is a multiplayer, multi-computer networked game for Windows computers, and now IOS devices too. Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. One computer runs the simulation and the “main screen”, while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do, like Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control. Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room (“bridge”) , and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain, a person who sits in the middle, doesn’t have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do. Artemis is a software game for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It’s also an app for iPhones, iPads, and iPods, and is cross-compatible with the PC version.

NWS Announces Big Computer Upgrade

while I enjoy the imagery of scientists dressed as hitmen, I wish we could hire full-time scientists

riverat1 writes "After being embarrassed when the Europeans did a better job forecasting Sandy than the National Weather Service Congress allocated $25 million ($23.7 after sequestration) in the Sandy relief bill for upgrades to forecasting and supercomputer resources. The NWS announced that their main forecasting computer will be upgraded from the current 213 TeraFlops to 2,600 TFlops by fiscal year 2015, over a twelve-fold increase. The upgrade is expected to increase the horizontal grid scale by a factor of 3 allowing more precise forecasting of local features of weather. The some of the allocated funds will also be used to hire some contract scientists to improve the forecast model physics and enhance the collection and assimilation of data."

Former Grand Theft Auto dev says industry needs methods other than violence to depict conflict

by Alexa Ray Corriea
firehose

'Pope said he believes the industry needs to create games with more meaning and rely less on depictions of violence as an easy way to present conflict. He also said developers need to push away from "sequels and rehashing" and use the latest technologies to tell better stories, not as an excuse to produce "another rehash" that's been "souped up" with updated graphics and features.'

By Alexa Ray Corriea on May 20, 2013 at 9:30a

Former Grand Theft Auto producer Jeremy Pope left Rockstar games determined never to work on violent video games again, because explaining to others he was working on the controversial and mature titles made him uncomfortable, he said in a recent Games Industry International interview.

Pope —who served as producer for Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Max Payne and now runs his own mobile startup Rally Games left Rockstar during the development of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas when he began to have mixed feelings on the titles he was creating.

"I think at the time it was really only an inkling that I had," he said. "I was still in my early to mid-20s, I had grown up playing all types of games, violent games included, and worked on Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto, e.t.c. I would always kind of defend the games we were making and I was pretty proud of being involved, but then when I would visit my grandmother in highly religious Alabama and have to explain what I do for a living, I didn't feel so great about explaining to them that I was a part of 'that game' they've been hearing about. I think that's what sort of planted the seeds of me wanting to work on different types of games."

He explained the controversy surrounding the games was a large factor in his decision to leave Rockstar, although he made it clear that he likes Rockstar's games, but is no longer interested in developing those kinds of games.

"Grand Theft Auto just pushed the boundaries in almost every possible way," he said. "So it's a shame that those games have become a talking point. I worked on Grand Theft Auto, and the whole thing about being able to run over a stripper or a prostitute was something that we didn't even really... Well, I guess you could say we knew about it, but it was something that was so contrived that it was almost like off the radar — so absurd and such tiny fraction of what's possible in the game."

Pope said he believes the industry needs to create games with more meaning and rely less on depictions of violence as an easy way to present conflict. He also said developers need to push away from "sequels and rehashing" and use the latest technologies to tell better stories, not as an excuse to produce "another rehash" that's been "souped up" with updated graphics and features.

"With any storytelling medium or any medium at all, you want to have conflict because that's how you can generate interest, and oftentimes the simplest or most base way to do that is through violence that isn't necessarily tied into a deeper, more meaningful story," he said. "I think it's often easier to do violence than it is to generate meaningful, interesting conflict through nonviolent ways."

Uptick In Whooping Cough Linked To Subpar Vaccines

they don't make 'em like they used to

sciencehabit writes "Whooping cough, or pertussis, has exploded in the United States in recent years. A new study (abstract) confirms what scientists have suspected for some time: The return of the disease is caused by the introduction of new, safer vaccines 2 decades ago. Although they have far fewer side effects, the new shots don't offer long-lived protection the way older vaccines do."

Florida Teen Expelled, Charged With Felony For Lesbian Relationship

Kaitlyn Hunt (Credit: Free Kate Facebook Page)

A Florida family says their 18-year-old daughter was charged with a felony and expelled from high school as a result of a consensual, same-sex relationship with another student.

Kaitlyn Hunt started dating a female classmate at the beginning of the school year when she was 17 and the girl she was about three years younger. According to an account posted to Facebook by Kaitlyn’s mother, in February, shortly after Kaitlyn turned 18, she was arrested on felony charges at the behest of her girlfriend’s parents. The specific crime was “sexual battery on a person 12-16 years old.”

Kaitlyn’s mother believes the charges were motivated by anti-gay animus:

They were out to destroy my daughter, they feel like my daughter “made” their daughter gay. They are bigoted, religious zeolites [sic] that see being gay as a sin and wrong, and they blame my daughter.

But Kaitlyn’s problems did not end there. Her girlfriends’s parents appealed to the school board and had her expelled from Sebastian River High School. Kaitlyn’s mom reports that the State Attorney, Brian Workman, has offered Kaitlyn a plea deal of “of two years house arrest and one year probation.” Kaitlyn has until next Friday to accept the plea deal or face a trial.

The family has started a petition calling on the state attorney to drop the charges against Kaitlyn.
