Nine Suns to Brighten Your Day

This morning I wasn't very inspired or motivated by any of the tips sitting in my inbox — nothing against our wonderful tip-submitters! It's not your fault there isn't much interesting work and stories out there — so I thought I would showcase a preview of my favorite project from the winners of the 2012 Brand New Awards designed by Landor's San Francisco office: Nine Suns is a new luxury winery in Napa Valley with three-digit dollar bottles available only to registered members. In introducing the wines, the product of a Chinese family, Landor created a name and identity that references and honors their Chinese heritage in a subtle and unexpected manner.
Nine Suns references an ancient Chinese legend where ten suns took turns rising in the sky. When they grew tired of the routine and decided to raise all at once, lakes dried and crops perished. The God of Archery was summoned to save the land. He aimed. Nine suns fell, leaving the one needed to keep heaven and earth in perfect balance. The story and archery references the art and science of wine making. The calligraphy, God of Archery and the three legged sunbirds dress the brand in mythical flair.

At first glance, the project is already stunning, with a simple and sophisticated look that fits the high-end wine category but also stands out for its unexpected graphics. However, it's the details that deserve the attention. Like the fact that there are nine circles (for the nine suns) in the otherwise abstract wordmark. Or the tiny archer on the business cards taking down the suns. Or the orange top on the cork. And there is a few more details I'm holding back to show on the BNA book and website. But even from this preview you can see the nice tension of bold colors, thin lines, and full circles at play.

GTA 5 map pieced together by fans
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto series have pieced together a game world map of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5, based on images previously released by Rockstar, OXM reports.
The resulting map of Los Santos reveals islands, a large main city and numerous smaller towns scattered across the islands. The final fan-made map is based on official shots found in the GTA 5 collector's edition, as well as information from trailers and screenshots previously released.
Rockstar has yet to release an official map of the whole of Los Santos, however. The studio stated early on that the upcoming title will feature a game world much bigger than those seen in previous games.

Any iOS device can be hacked within one minute with modified charger, say researchers
firehoselol putting computers in chargers lol
Security researchers have discovered a way to push software onto an iOS device using a modified charger. The team at George Institute of Technology says its charger was able to upload arbitrary software to an iOS device within one minute of tit being plugged in. According to the researchers, "all users are affected," as the hack doesn't require any user interaction. Hackers are even capable of hiding the applications, so they don't show up in the device's app list. It's not clear if the charger is able to upload malicious code — Apple's iOS devices, by default, are "sandboxed" and will only install and run properly signed apps — but this is a worrying development regardless.
The charger itself is fairly large — it's based on the BeagleBone, a tiny Linux PC the size of a credit card — so it's unlikely to be able to be scaled down to fit in a regular iPhone or iPad charger anytime soon. The hack and charger will be demonstrated at the Black Hat security conference in July. During a presentation of their findings, the researchers will detail how USB capabilities are able to bypass Apple's defense mechanisms, and explain what Apple can do to make hacks like this one harder to pull off.

Games: The Gameological Society: Fear Effect and Tomb Raider show how big-studio games have become more responsible and less fun
firehoseAuthor conflates New Lara's less-tits-out image with how AAA gameplay has casualized, missing the point
but I'm 100% in agreement with:
"None of these moments involve much interaction on the part of the player. They’re color, tone for the story. These are the same sort of torture porn maneuvers used in movies like Hostel Part 2 and The Descent to make the eventual violent empowerment of their heroines so affecting. A seemingly fragile woman endures constant physical hardship and becomes a warrior as a result."
and equally disturbed at how this has been accepted by games press as the maturation of female representation in games

In Decadent, we explore two games united by a common theme and separated by time—specifically, by a decade or so.
I didn’t think it would be that bad. Time makes the most outlandish things seem quaint, almost innocent, once their edges have been smoothed out by the years. That’s how I approached Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix when I revisited it for this column. I expected the Barbarella effect. The once-bawdy slice of exploitation would become playfully campy under modern scrutiny.
The promise of historically delightful camp isn’t all that drew me to the game.
Fear Effect 2 was the culmination of the “sex sells” years for the game publisher Eidos, an era that began with the ’90s ascent of Tomb Raider and its curvy star, Lara Croft. In the present day, Raider has been re-imagined with the specific goal of wash away its sex-object roots ...

Computex 2013: Taiwan's computer makers exhibit the year's upcoming tech
By Vlad Savov on June 2, 2013 03:28 pm
Writing through a daze of jetlagged insomnia, The Verge sanguinely contemplates the city outside its seventh-floor hotel room window. Taipei is a sweltering, buzzing metropolis, which, like America's New York, can be accurately accused of a chronic inability to ever sleep. As such, this tropical capital is a good embodiment for the show it hosts this week: Computex.
The Asian equivalent of CES in the United States, Computex is the main event for all the big Taiwanese brands, from Acer and...

Mozilla delays blocking advertisers' cookies in Firefox
After announcing that it would soon start blocking cookies from third-party advertisers by default in Firefox, Mozilla has walked back on its plans while it continues to test the system. In a blog post, Mozilla's Brendan Eich said that the patch needed more testing and data in order to refine it for release. "The idea is that if you have not visited a site (including the one to which you are navigating currently) and it wants to put a cookie on your computer, the site is likely not one you have heard of or have any relationship with," he said. "But this is only likely, not always true."
Eich cited false positives — cookies from a site you visit being blocked because it has multiple addresses — and false negatives, in which an ad is clicked accidentally or a formerly trusted site starts adding cookies. The patch, developed by Stanford law student Jonathan Mayer, was initially set to be deployed in Firefox 22. Now, there's no set timeline for its release, but Eich will provide a progress update sometime in the next six weeks.
Advertisers, who depend on third-party cookies to target users across sites, condemned Mozilla for the move, just as they have generally fought Do Not Track efforts by other companies and legislators. Firefox currently has an option to block third-party cookies, but it's previously left off by default. This contrasts with Microsoft, which entered into a protracted fight last year to turn it on automatically in Internet Explorer.

Wobbly Little Camel Gets Upright at Zoo Zurich
Standing up can be a big challenge when you've got extra-long legs and haven't had much practice. But Nara, a female Bactrian Camel born on April 24 at Zoo Zurich, finally got the hang of it.
Photo Credit: Zoo Zürich, Peter Bolliger
Bactrian Camels have been domesticated for use as pack animals in central Asia for centuries. Their exceptional tolerance of extreme heat and freezing temperatures and their ability to go for several months without water makes them ideal for travelling across the remote steppes of central Asia. More than two million domesticated Bactrian camels exist, but they are critically endangered, possibly extinct, in the wild.
