Top PC maker Lenovo sells more phones and tablets than computers
Lenovo has managed to do what none of its contemporaries in the PC business has been able to pull off: make a successful move into mobile devices. And to top it off, it’s managed to pull it off at the same time it grabs the number one spot worldwide for PC shipments. Today, Lenovo is reporting that its mobile device sales have eclipsed its PC sales, spurred on by strong growth in its native China, where it holds a 42 percent share of the market.
The company’s also reporting that its shipments of smart devices including phones and tablets are up 41 percent year-over-year — a number that jumps to 132 percent when you just consider smartphones. And next year could be even bigger; the company has said it wants to sell phones in the US within the year. “Smartphones are our new opportunity,” said CEO Yang Yuanqing.

China zoo faces uproar after 'African lion' revealed to be a dog
A zoo in China is facing an uproar of criticism this week, after it was revealed that its African lion is in fact a dog. The zoo, located in the People's Park of Luohe in the province of Henan, reportedly tried to disguise a Tibetan mastiff as a big cat, putting it on display in a cage marked "African lion", according to AFP. The Tibetan mastiff is a large, long-haired dog with a slightly lion-like mane, but the zoo's charade was exposed after visitors heard the animal bark.
According to the People's Daily, the zoo also tried to replace other exotic animals with even less congruous substitutes. The snake cage, for instance, contained two large rats and exactly zero snakes.

A park administrator told Chinese media that the zoo actually does have a lion, but it had been temporarily moved to a separate breeding facility. The official also said that the dog was housed there for unspecified safety reasons, and vowed that the incorrect exhibit signs would be replaced.
But visitors who paid the zoo's $2.45 admission fee feel they've been duped. "The zoo is absolutely cheating us," one woman told the Beijing Youth Daily. "They are trying to disguise the dogs as lions."

Quack!
I dug up this image last year when I first started to tweet notable pictures from medieval books. This one is special because it is realistic yet filled with humour. The decorator makes us, the observers, part of the hunting scene he drew in the margin of a 14th-century Psalter. Right in front of our noses a fox catches a duck. But the drama continues as sound is added to the scene. Just before being dragged off, we see (hear) the duck utter the single sound in her vocabulary: queck! Or as his modern cousin would say: quack! Love it.

Feed reader developers -- here's an easy way to differentiate your service and have your users love you even more
You all read and write OPML subscription lists, right?
Let's go one step further, and let users subscribe to OPML subscription lists.
How would that work?
- Each such list is readable over the Internet, the same way RSS feeds are.
- As often as you would read a feed, read the OPML file.
- If there's a new feed in the list, and the user is not subscribed to it, add it to their feed list.
- If a feed has been removed from the list, and the user was not previously subscribed to it, remove it from their feed list.
Why is that cool?
- It means the list can be maintained by another piece of software, or by another human being. A domain expert, for example. Ezra Klein might keep a list of feeds a good liberal blogger would read. Or George Will would keep a list for plutocrats.
- Spotify could give you a list of feeds to follow for your favorite bands, and that list would change as your musical tastes evolve.
- The New York Times could provide a list that tracks the major political issues, and when one dies out, it would be replaced by another.
- Jay Rosen, Doc Searls. Josh Marshall, John Gruber, The Economist -- they could all provide opinionated selections of feeds you will find essential.
- You could have lists maintained by applications designed to track your interests and interests of thousands of other people, and add feeds to your list based on what those people are following.
- In other words there are whole new areas of technology waiting for you to add this feature!
The pitch
- Now why should you do it?
- Because it's the kind of feature that will appeal to the early adopters.
- Reporters, editors, bloggers, podcasters, super-fanboy types.
- People with itchy feed-reading fingers. Whose palms sweat when their favorite feeds update. Who love the idea of getting new feeds without doing any work. They want to know what's up before anyone else does.
- These people in turn influence lots of other people. They will talk about your product, and that will build your presence, and help other people learn how cool your stuff is.
Why does Dave want it?
- I want to provide a curated feed list for people who read my blog.
- I already have it, but I'm looking for an excuse to clean it up! :-)
Just do it!
- It takes a couple of days at most.
- The hardest part is maintaining a reference count on feeds, so you know when to remove it from the user's main list (it might be in two or more lists, so having it disappear from one just means its reference count goes down).
- And when you do it, let me know so I can sing your praise. :-)
Update
- Feedly is going to do it in an upcoming release. ;-)

Things that correlate with autism
firehosevia multitasksuicide
"This study didn’t show that induction or augmentation during childbirth substantially increases the risk for autism, although it hints at a greater influence of socioeconomic status and by implication, healthcare access. If anything, based on earlier literature, it adds a slight if only mathematical confirmation of the perception that births involving autistic children can be associated with more complications, such as the presence of meconium, gestational diabetes, and fetal distress, than births involving non-autistic children. And that points to induction and augmentation as useful in these situations, not as problematic, and certainly does not affirm them as a risk."
Cops accidentally record themselves admitting they harassed activist at rodeo owners' request: "God, we're gonna get sued"
firehosevia multitasksuicide
everything SHOULD be watching these assholes beat
An anti-rodeo/animal right activist was subjected to a blatantly illegal, harassing traffic stop after he was asked to leave an Oregon rodeo. How do we know it was illegal? Because the cops who stopped him forgot to turn off their own cameras and recorded themselves admitting that the rodeo (which is a major donor to the Malheur County Sheriff's Department) had demanded the traffic stop. The same cops who participated in the stop were previously at the center of a lawsuit that the county settled in which they were alleged to have fabricated evidence, so they've got form for this. Some dialog highlights:
I didn't want to stop the man.
God, we're gonna get sued.
We're gonna be in a world of hurt here.
All because of that rodeo board, you know that right?
Dammit I was still recording!
It's a pretty neat indication of why we should want transparency for the strong and privacy for the weak.

Aereo can turn a profit with fewer than a million users, says CEO
So far, major TV networks have been dismissive about Aereo, the startup that streams free terrestrial broadcasts over the internet. But CEO Chet Kanojia is making it clear that his company doesn’t need millions of users to turn a profit, only hundreds of thousands, reports CNET. Speaking to a group of entrepreneurs at the Startup Grind event in New York, the CEO reportedly added that his company would have a "fabulous" business with a million users, and an "extremely fabulous" one with five million.
Unlike other video services like Netflix and Hulu, Aereo doesn’t pay any licensing fees for the content it streams (much to the chagrin of the networks), giving it a considerably lower cost structure. Last year, former TV mogul and current Aereo investor Barry Diller said that if the service found "10 to 20 million" subscribers it would be "very profitable," a sentiment that Kanojia echoed onstage today. From the sounds of it, as long as the company can successfully head off the legal challenges posed by the likes of CBS, NBC, and Fox, and continue to execute its aggressive expansion plan, Aereo should be in the money.

Man Learns How Not To Launch A Site For Women
firehosevia saucie
"We're different, because we recognize how many diverse interests are shared amongst the next generation of women ... Creating an amazing blend of content — one that puts news and politics right beside fashion tips is what will set us apart."
Putting aside the hard feelings around how female entrepreneurs are notoriously underrepresented when it comes to venture funding for similar projects, and that Goldberg raised $6.5 million to get Bustle off the ground, and further putting aside that he named the site Bustle, both sexes reacted with swift fervor to the claim that his site is "different" for recognizing "diverse interests" among women.
He also included this line, which earned ire: "My job, as CEO, is to hire the right people. ... Knowing the difference between mascara, concealer, and eye-liner is not my job." (Goldberg says the mascara line was intended to be tongue-in-cheek.)
The launch of a venture-backed new women's site was complicated by its founder's claims that it was "different" and that as CEO, "knowing the difference between mascara, concealer, and eye-liner is not my job."
