An outage of one company's servers might only affect that company's customers — but when a major data center for Amazon hits kinks, sites that rely on the AWS cloud services all suffer from the downtime. That's what happened today, when several major sites or online services (like Instagram and AirBnB) were knocked temporarily offline, evidently because of problems at an Amazon data center in Northern Virginia. From TechCrunch's coverage of the outage: "The deluge of tweets that accompanied the services’ initial hiccups first started at around 4 p.m. Eastern time, and only increased in intensity as users found they couldn’t share pictures of their food or their meticulously crafted video snippets. Some further poking around on Twitter and beyond revealed that some other services known to rely on AWS — Netflix, IFTTT, Heroku and Airbnb to name a few — have been experiencing similar issues today."

Homebrew 3D Portal DS is out ⊟

Aperture Science, a homebrew project adapting Valve’s Portal series for the DS, is now available to download and play with its first public release. As you’ll see in the “test chamber” footage after the break, this is a totally different beast from StillAliveDS, that awesome 2D homebrew game based on the same series.

This new release comes from Lobo and Smealum — you’ll recognize the latter name from his work on the old but impressive Minecraft DS project. The team admits that Aperture Science is “very buggy and incomplete,” but this release should be “mostly playable” and include 14 stages, plus an on-board level editor.

Wow, the DS homebrew scene has advanced quite a bit in recent years.

Menswear Dog visits Stetson

We were recently invited to tour the Stetson HQ and showroom in preparation for a feature we’re working on with the brand, and decided to bring the camera along. Here are some quick snapshots of their immaculate space and Menswear Dog posing in approval. Stay tuned for more!

Attention all map lovers: Stamen Design's new Mapstack service is hard to describe but worth delving into and playing around with. Is it an app? Not really; there's nothing to download. You just go to the website and jump right in. Is it a graphics program? Sort of; the controls work a bit like Photoshop, with sliders popping up in boxes when you want to edit a layer.

It's all there for free, accessible even from a tablet: worldwide map data with tons of graphic tools and the ability to link five layers. Concoct practically any kind of map you can imagine. Like it? Click on it to save it as an image. Click again to email it or Facebook it or load it onto your tumblr site. It's pretty cool.

According to the website, the service is "part of the CityTracking project, funded by the Knight Foundation, in which Stamen is building web services and open source tools to display public data in easy-to-understand, highly visual ways." According to users who have tried it, it's a ton of fun.

I was (mercifully) unaware of such a thing.  Fan created content, you are the best.
