Clipboard Staphylococcus

by Anonymous

SW Main & 5th Today. Look, I've dealt with worse. Others have been ruder, more annoying, and highly aggressive. You had that fake clipboard and smile plastered to your face and one of pre-rehearsed lines locked and loaded.

No I don't want to shake your fucking hand dude!!! I shake your hand, and I've shaken hands with everyone you've shaken hands with. It's fucking gross. In a sea of needbags, otherwise known as downtown PDX, you're no different than the bums that verbally accost people on a daily basis. Oh, but you have a cause right? I don't give a shit.

And your female partner sneering at me as I politely said, "I don't shake hands," well she can go fuck herself. 45 minutes before this encounter, I watched a bum yell obscenities at some folks who ignored her plea for coffee on the very same corner. What's the difference between you two and her? You both have agendas. You both come off as friendly and polite. And you both cop an attitude when people don't give a shit about what you want.

Go work over across from City Hall where all the degenerates have decided to squat and leave the productive people alone so that they can produce. The so-called non-profit you're working for is only spending pennies on the dollar for the alleged cause you represent. Most of the money goes to paying employees, marketing materials, etc. If you really do care about helping children across the world, join the fucking Peace Corps. Peace out!!!

China’s corruption crackdown gets even more serious and reaches its elite governing committee

by Heather Timmons
Zhou Yongkang China corruption crackdown

Zhou Yongkang, the former security chief and oil industry veteran known for his embrace of labor camps and brutal treatment of protesters and dissidents, will be investigated for corruption, marking the first time since China’s Cultural Revolution that a member of the Politburo Standing Committee has been investigated.

“Current and retired top leaders endorsed the decision earlier this month during the secretive annual party meeting at the resort of Beidaihe in Hebei province,” The South China Morning Post reports. ”According to sources familiar with the leadership’s thinking, President Xi Jinping and his administration are determined to use the case to galvanize the anti-graft campaign.” Beijing is particularly incensed by the “the vast fortune that Zhou’s family has amassed,” the report said.

As Quartz reported earlier, the noose has been tightening around Zhou since his retirement last November, with key allies in the oil industry and from the Sichuan Province detained in corruption probes.  Zhou is a former ally of Bo Xilai, the disgraced Politburo member whose high-profile trial concluded this week.

The investigation against him may not be publicized until a meeting of party elites in November, the SCMP said.

Pressy adds a physical, programmable button to Android phones

by Nathan Olivarez-Giles

Android phones nowadays are largely devoid of physical buttons — save for the typical duo of volume and power keys. But Pressy, a Kickstarter project that promises to bring a programmable physical button to nearly any Android device, is challenging the idea that consumers are happy doing everything on a touchscreen. With 45 days left to go, Pressy's creators, Nimrod Back and Boaz Mendel, have raised more than $92,000. Pressy surpassed its stated $40,000 goal in less than 24 hours. To put it simply, Pressy is taking off.

The idea behind the project is a simple one: use a standard 1/8-inch headphone jack (but without the headphones) to create a diminutive but easy to find button. When installed, Pressy can perform a number of straightforward operations such as launching a phone's camera app, starting a voice recording, opening up settings, activating the flashlight, or any other number of other options. Each action is assigned to the button in an a Pressy app. According to Back and Mendel's Kickstarter page, Pressy can even be set to perform multiple functions by defining what happens with single or double short or long clicks — basically, the inputs are morse code.

Pressy app

The way Pressy works is by running on Android as a background service. The duo says that their app monitors the headset jack, but only really does anything when Pressy is clicked, which should prevent the button from draining battery life. The Pressy app, and therefore the actual hardware, works on any device running Android 2.3 or newer. And once the app is set up, Boaz and Mendel say users will even be able to use the mic button on a set of headphones to perform the same actions the Pressy button would.

Bringing back buttons

Since Pressy isn't yet a real consumer product — the pair says it'll take about four months before the buttons are shipping to donors — we can't say how well the device will work in the real world, especially on the many, many different Android phones out there. But, if you want to give Pressy a shot, the asking price isn't much. For a $17 pledge, donors will get the button and the app. Or if you're feeling really spendy, $45 can buy a gold-coated Pressy button with a matching key chain holder.

Your Fair-Weather Cycling Is Coming To A Close

by Anonymous
firehose

I love you too buddy
I hope you don't get hit by a car

Yay! I am so glad that the warm summer months had inspired you to dust off the garaged bikes you've been hoarding all winter. You all looked really cute on your beach cruisers, especially when tailed by a couple of kids swerving all over the fucking esplanade while you stop to take pictures or roll up your pants. Since the fair-weather rider list of malfeasants would be endless if not pared down to the bullshit you pull in only a specific area, let's talk quickly about that: the esplanade. First of all, stay to the fucking RIGHT. People are inevitably going to need to pass your leisurely asses and few of you seem to understand that this stretch of terrain is meant to be treated, in an idyllic world, like a road. Next, if you are in a group, please stop riding three cyclists parallel to one another. You make it impossible for people to get by and you are triply oblivious to shit going on around you. Thirdly, if you have kids, see numbers one and two. Don’t bring the little shits on the esplanade if you are not going to control them. Remember: some of do this all season long. Some of us are on our way to work. Get with the program or put your cruiser back where it belongs: in the garage. Also, next time a jogger stops suddenly and about faces to look at a fucking bird I am going to hit them instead of fall down on purpose. I'm so glad Fall is upon us.

In this pro-Lincoln cartoon, “Honest Abe” is shown about to consume Senator Stephen A. Douglas, at left, and John C. Breckenridge, at right, who was the incumbent vice president in the administration of James Buchanan.

Douglas, from Illinois, was considered a moderate on the slavery issue, and he is labeled “soft shell.” He is crying out, “I’m a gone sucker!!”

Breckenridge, from Kentucky, was adamantly pro-slavery. He is labeled “hard shell” and is exclaiming, “Alas! That ever I should live to be swallowed by a rail splitter!”

Lincoln, considered the political outsider in the race, is saying, “These fellows have been planted so long in Washington that they are as fat as butter, I hardly know which to swallow first.”

Cocktail Science: Is Tap Water Ruining Your Homemade Cocktails? | Serious Eats: Drinks

by djempirical

waterhacking; tl;dr: use SmartWater for cocktails????

look, I agree water makes a difference
_DURING DISTILLING_
gfy otherwise

08232013_faucet.jpg

You find an amazing cocktail at a bar, get the recipe, and try it out at home. But, no matter what you do, your home version tastes flat, boring, or just plain off. Your mixing skills might be to blame, but what if the real problem lies in a cruddy water source? Here's how to find out.

Before anything else, do this.

Run, do not walk to your kitchen sink. Pour yourself a glass of cool tap water. Does it taste awesome? Like cool morning dew clinging to the underside of a blade of unadulterated grass?

Then leave your water alone.

The United States maintains respectably high standards for drinking water. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency enforces higher standards for tap water than the Food and Drug Administration uses for bottled water.

So why worry about tap water?

Because the government cares that your tap water is safe to drink, not that it tastes awesome. Plus, the government only controls centralized water sources, and as resident Food Lab expert Kenji Lopez-Alt has pointed out, the water coming out of your tap can be contaminated by the very pipes in your home.

How Much of a Difference Can Water Really Make?

If you've ever traveled around the United States, you've probably noticed a strange sensation: sometimes soap feels more slippery when you shower.

What's going on?

  • Soap reacts with the "hard-water" minerals magnesium and calcium to create soap scum.
  • People install water softeners that replace those minerals with sodium and potassium.
  • Sodium and potassium don't form soap scum, but they will react with soap to create a "slippery" film on your body.

Here's the so what: a measurement of just 160 parts per million (ppm) or mg/L* total dissolved solids (TDS) means you've got hard water. The EPA, on the other hand, considers a TDS of up to 500 mg/L acceptable of drinking water.

Dang.

If a 160 TDS reading can mean the difference between slippery or squeaky skin, imagine what 500 TDS can do to your tongue.

What's the solution? Well, filter your water, of course. But the question then becomes: how filtered?

*In water at sea level, ppm comes out to the same thing as mg/L though that's not always true in other situations.

Myth: The Best Water Tastes Like Nothing.

Distilled water? Been there, done that, kinda sucks.

People associate the best water with being 100% free of contaminants, but that's not strictly true. By definition, distilled water has had all its impurities chemically removed. By itself, it doesn't exactly taste bad, but it doesn't taste good either.

Here's another big problem with distilled water. Water with absolutely zero minerals in it is highly reactive, which means it quickly absorbs impurities from whatever it touches. That's why high school chemistry students associate distilled water with that weird "paper cup taste."

So if distilled water doesn't taste amazing, what water does taste best?

Why I'm Obsessed with Spit

If distilled water doesn't taste like "nothing," what does?

The answer, as it turns out, is saliva.

Since our natural saliva occupies our mouths all the time, we naturally become adapted to its taste. What's adaptation? Think about this: what happens when you taste something sour and then sip water? The water tastes sweet. When the tongue adapts to vinegar, less-acidic water tastes sweet for a few moments.

Saliva is the baseline you're permanently adapted to; you experience the taste of all other liquids only as they compare to that baseline.

So what does that baseline look like? Saliva contains a viscous mix of digestive enzymes, proteins, and most importantly, the minerals sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, among others. Oh, and its pH (acidity) is roughly neutral, though it varies depending on what you've been drinking.

That's why distilled water tastes weird: compared to saliva, it's lacking in key minerals. Hence, the "off" taste.

After I figured this stuff out about saliva, I realized that truly good tasting water must contain minerals, and probably in concentrations similar to what's found in human spit.

The pros, it turns out, were way ahead of me.

Look carefully at the label of any bottled water you might buy and information should be provided about that water's mineral concentrations. You see, most water-bottlers don't actually collect water directly from streams or "glaciers" (wtf?), they actually filter everything out of a decent water source and then add minerals back into the water for taste.

What minerals? The ones most prominently found in saliva.

"Perfect" Water: Lessons from the Coffee and Tea Folks

When I was researching my book, I found several bottled water taste tests that all pointed to one conclusion:

A total dissolved solids level of around 35 mg/L tastes the best.

And what minerals made up those dissolved solids? Not to beat a dead horse, but they were sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. To read way more about the science of water and minerals, check out this excerpt from my book on Camper English's Alcademics blog.

For coffee, the experts seem to agree that a higher TDS level is ideal. In a taste test between 45 mg/L, 150 mg/L, and 450 mg/L water for brewing coffee, experts unanimously chose the 150 mg/L sample as ideal.

The tea folks seem to have settled on a similar range: between 50 mg/L and 150 mg/L is considered a good range.

And both the coffee and tea folks agree that using artificially softened water will change the extraction profile of the final beverage.

How to Hack "Perfect" Water

20130829waterglass.jpg

I started on this crazy project after noticing that the water from my tap made homemade cocktails taste... off.

Even though no water is directly added to a cocktail, ice melt can be significant. In my tests, water due to ice melt made up roughly 40% of the total mass of a cocktail.

When I tested my home water source, I found that the water straight out of my tap came in at a whopping 300 TDS and a slightly acidic 6.8 pH.

To test your own water,

  • Consider buying a simple TDS meter
  • You can buy a pH meter as well, but I've found that they're hard to use, unreliable, and aren't as useful in detecting problems as a TDS meter.
  • Ultimately, let your nose (and tongue) be the judge.

Filtering options

  • Most home models use activated charcoal, which captures most minerals and chlorine. Some varieties are more effective than others.
  • Activated charcoal works poorly against dissolved metal ions (like lead or sodium). Reverse osmosis (RO) can deal with these contaminants, though effectiveness depends on the membrane size used in the RO system.
  • Multi-stage filters are designed to remove the most common contaminants step by step.

So what's the best approach? Honestly, it depends on your water source. You might do fine with a simple charcoal-based filter. In my case, my water had high levels of sodium, so I went with a 5-stage ZeroWater system. Unfortunately, these filters are slow and can be expensive.

A Recipe for Water?

As I alluded to earlier, the highest-rated water generally contains a small concentration (around 35 TDS) of sodium, calcium, and magnesium. The most widely-available brand of water that fits this bill is SmartWater, a bottled water that is nothing more than distilled water with minerals added back in.

To make a replica at home, simply start with distilled water (you can get it in gallon or larger sizes at Walmart or use a combination of filters to get 0 TDS water) and add a very small amount of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride to the mix.

Get the Recipe »

Want to read more?

I was specifically interested in finding out what basic water tastes great to most people. But, there are some amazing folks out there exploring the boundaries of what you can do with water. For example:

  • Chemist/bartender Darcy O'Neil writes about mineral waters, their taste, and how to make them at length in his must-read book Fix the Pumps.
  • Organic chemist/food blogger Martin Lersch provides an overview of mineral waters and handy calculator that tells you exactly how to recreate your favorite brand's flavor.
  • And most recently, popular cocktail blogger Camper English has partnered with Bowmore distillery to learn about the waters that form the foundation of great Scotch. This series is fascinating, particularly for lovers of neat spirits.

What's your favorite bottled water? What else do you want to know about water?

Is Kindergarten Redshirting Broadening the Gap Between Privileged and Lower-Income Students? | Back To School - Yahoo! Shine

by gguillotte
firehose

white people of means come up with some incredible bullshit for their kids

In the past few months, as my child enters Pre-K, I've become more familiar with the term "redshirting" in regards to preschoolers and rising kindergartners. The idea is to "hold back" your preschooler for one more year in preschool, so that your child enters kindergarten as one of the oldest students. (Redshirting traditionally refers to college sports, when a freshman's participation is delayed so he/she is eligible to play a fifth year.) The advantages of kindergarten redshirting are numerous - your child is older, therefore his brain is more mature. He more readily grasps the concepts of math and writing and has better fine motor control to excel. He is more emotionally and socially mature. And in the years to come, he is more physically mature to compete as a high school or college athlete. We must also look at the socio-economic standpoint of delaying entry to kindergarten. Most redshirted children are white, from higher income families that don't mind the burden of an extra year in private daycare or preschool. In contrast, lower income families seek the tax-supported public school system, sending age-qualified children regardless of emotional or academic readiness.

Mac version of SimCity hit with installation and launch issues

by Brian Crecente
firehose

of course it did

Nearly six months after the botched launch of SimCity on PC, it looks like the Mac version of the game is running into some launch issues of its own.

Some fans of the game have been unable to install it after downloading and others can't get the game to launch, according to comment threads on the official forums. An official SimCity Mac Install FAQ posted by a developer walks through a number of reported installation issues and ways to resolve them.

Those issues include a "mutexAlert" error, which can be resolved by switching the OS to English. Another simply doesn't allow a player to install the game once downloaded. The suggested solution for that is to re-install Origin and opt in to the new Beta version.

The game also apparently doesn't currently support  Mac OS X 10.7.4  nor the upcoming 10.9 beta release. Both are being worked on, according to the post.

The Mac version of the game is being sold and is also available to those who had already purchased the Windows PC version. Purchasing either the PC or Mac version of the game will give you both versions.

Electronic Arts' Origin service struggled to meet the demands of the PC launch of the online-only game, making the title unplayable at times. Maxis developers rolled back some features as they fought to restore the game to functionality, and released a number of patches.

Polygon reached out to Electronic Arts about the launch issues and will update this story when they respond.
