Sorry, Comcast and Verizon customers: RCN delivers faster Netflix

by Jon Brodkin
Netflix's "Super HD" content is only available to customers whose ISPs use Netflix's free caching service.
Netflix

In our recent article "Why YouTube buffers: The secret deals that make—and break—online video," we described how battles between ISPs and streaming video providers can have a dramatic impact on video quality in customers' homes.

The chief issues? ISPs refusing to upgrade peering connections to relieve congestion and ISPs refusing to take YouTube owner Google and Netflix up on their offers of free caching equipment that puts video content closer to the last mile. To a cynical eye, it looks like ISPs either want money from Google and Netflix or want to degrade Google and Netflix quality to drive users to their own services.

But there are exceptions, mostly among small ISPs. RCN, a regional provider in Chicago, Boston, New York, Washington, DC, and parts of Pennsylvania, took Netflix up on its offer (called Open Connect), and its decision is justified by the data. Netflix has published its first regional speed index, just for the Boston area, and it showed that "the average speeds for Netflix streams on the RCN network in Boston outperformed other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by as much as 70 percent. This means that those Netflix members who were also RCN customers enjoyed better picture quality, quicker access to their favorite TV shows and movies, and more reliable playback delivered via the Internet from Netflix, especially during peak viewing hours."

Apple Receives Patent For Accessing Sets of Apps With Different Passcodes

by Unknown Lamer
wabrandsma writes, quoting Apple Insider "The technology, detailed in a patent awarded to Apple on Tuesday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, deals with so-called 'access inputs' that determine what apps, device services, and functions can be accessed by a user. Apple's U.S. Patent No. 8,528,072 for a 'Method, apparatus and system for access mode control of a device,' describes a system that creates user access modes guarded by predetermined gesture inputs." Reading the patent, it appears Apple managed to patent allowing access to some programs without a passcode from the lock screen of a device while protecting others, so e.g. you can quickly swipe to make a phone call or control your music, but have to enter a code to read your email or access your word processor documents.

The family ownership feud at the top of Demoulas Super Markets Inc. hasn’t yet come to a showdown, but each side has given the other a peek at its hand.

Employees who support CEO Arthur T. Demoulas have turned out in numbers at two of the Market Basket parent company’s board meetings in a row. So far, the board – controlled by cousin Arthur S. Demoulas‘ branch of the family – hasn’t voted to oust the CEO of the regional supermarket chain, but in its last meeting it engaged an executive search firm.

A week later, the board’s three independent directors – Keith Cowan of Sprint, Nabil El-Hage of Harvard Business School and Ronald Weiner of Perelson Weiner LLP – wrote a letter to Market Basket employees, seeking to reassure them. In it, the board members write that the board is committed to continuing Market Basket’s contributions to its employee profit sharing plan, which hasbuilt up a retirement fund valued at more than $552 million.

A $250 million dividend to shareholders, also voted by the board in its last meeting, “will not affect Market Basket’s ability to meet its financial and operational needs, to treat its employees well, to open new stores, or to make capital improvements,” the board members wrote.

Today, a group of employees plans to respond. In a draft version of a letter that starts out cordial, but gradually becomes more confrontational in tone, the employees respond to the board’s letter, asking for more information about the board’s plans – especially as regardsArthur T. Demoulas.

“First and most importantly for us you make no mention of who is in charge of DSM,” the employees write. “Will it continue to be Arthur T. Demoulas as we would all like?”

The employees who wrote the letter also ask for specifics about the board’s plan for employee profit sharing plan and mention a bonus plan they say accounts for 40 percent of annual compensation for salaried employees.

“We respectfully request that you show yourselves,” the employees write. “Come out of the shadows and tell us who you are and why you are on board in what we believe to be the ruining of a great American company.”

Both letters were provided to me by a source with knowledge of the conflict, who asked to remain unnamed. I’ve printed and re-scanned them. Here are links to .pdf versions of both letters:

Writing Documentation: Teach, Don't Tell

by Soulskill
firehose

' "people don’t learn by reading alphabetized lists of disconnected information"

Losh's advice for wikis is simple and straightforward: "They are bad and terrible. Do not use them." '

Programmer Steve Losh has written a lengthy explanation of what separates good documentation from bad, and how to go about planning and writing documentation that will actually help people. His overarching point is that documentation should be used to teach, not to dump excessive amounts of unstructured information onto a user. Losh takes many of the common documentation tropes — "read the source," "look at the tests," "read the docstrings" — and makes analogies with learning everyday skills to show how silly they can be. "This is your driving teacher, Ms. Smith. ... If you have any questions about a part of the car while you’re driving, you can ask her and she’ll tell you all about that piece. Here are the keys, good luck!" He has a similar opinion of API strings: "API documentation is like the user’s manual of a car. When something goes wrong and you need to replace a tire it’s a godsend. But if you’re learning to drive it’s not going to help you because people don’t learn by reading alphabetized lists of disconnected information." Losh's advice for wikis is simple and straightforward: "They are bad and terrible. Do not use them."

Promise.

It's not much, but it's what I can do:

I promise not to attend PAX, ever again, in any capacity.

I promise to advise my peers and colleagues not to attend PAX, ever again, in any capacity.

I promise to help organize / build / support new institutions and communities, to try to replace PAX and counter its owners' poisonous influence on its fans.

I can't promise that my actions will matter. They probably won't matter. But that's partly the point of a promise.

Reviewed: New Logo and Identity for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! by Michael Casebolt

by Armin

Okay, Please Tell Me!

New Logo and Identity for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! by Michael Casebolt

First aired in 1998, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! (WWDTM) is a weekly, hour-long, quiz show on the radio produced by NPR (National Public Radio) and WBEZ Chicago, broadcast on more than 600 stations around the country. WWDTM's hook is its whip smart humor and irreverent spin they put on the news and culture, led by fast-talking host Peter Sagal who puts three panelists through the ringer with various quizzes that test their knowledge and ability to detect fake news. WWDTM tapes in front of a live audience in Chicago, it goes on the road where cult followers attend tapings, hosts an annual live event at Chicago's Millennium Park, and even has the Fathom Events treatment where it is simulcast in movie theaters across the U.S.. This week, the Peabody Award-winning show introduced a new logo designed by Boulder, CO-based Michael Casebolt.

After taking in all of our feedback, Casebolt came up with a clear winner: the 'newsclamation point' icon. Well, that's what we like to call it anyway. It cleverly represents the show at its core, while also being bold and unique enough to stand alone.

Merch.

This project clearly breaks my main criteria for a review: it's not big. It's the identity for a radio show. Not the radio station. Not the parent company of the radio station. The identity for one hour's worth of a show with relatively minimal mainstream appeal. But you know what? The process and the story — although I prefer to pretend I didn't read this line, "We asked them each to develop a series of logo comps and, eventually, we selected one skilled designer," here — and the result is far more spirited, for lack of a better word, than much of the big-company stuff we tend to show.

It's not the most revolutionizing logo and it has its issues — when made small, the dummy copy on the icon gets all mushed, and, when made big, the rounded strokes generated by Adobe Illustrator where vector points meet or end are too obvious and not sanded off visually as they should be — but it has a concept behind it, and it's a single color logo, and it's flat, and it's an exclamation point! I also like that this is a job anyone of us could get, not just an unattainable airline or mass consumer product. And it's a good time for this redesign too, given the extinction rate of newspapers: had they waited another two or three years to do it no one would understand what kind of artifact the exclamation point is made out of.

Rockstar Hires Real Gangsters For 'Grand Theft Auto V' Voices

firehose

'DJ "Lazlow" Jones revealed the information on Chicago's WGN radio station, explaining: "We get these guys in to record the gang characters because we don't want a goofy LA actor who went to a fancy school trying to be a hard gang member. There's nothing worse than that, so just go find the real terrifying people and say 'can you come in here please?'"

Rockstar recruited a person to find the criminals, including "El Salvadorian gang dudes with amazing tattoos, one of which literally had gotten out of prison the day before." Jones says this lets the game get closer to reality than otherwise possible, with the actors often given free reign to improvise. "They look at the lines and say, 'I wouldn't say that,' so we say, 'OK, say what you would say.' Authenticity, you know?" '

problematic

Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto V is guaranteed to move units, but the developers aren't resting on their laurels in their attempt to build the most comprehensive crime world yet. Take the voice acting — rather than traditional professionals, Rockstar is using "actual, real gang members" where possible.

BULBASAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will see the return of classic partner Pokemon Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, it was announced during today's Nintendo Direct.

The chosen Pokemon will later be able to Mega Evolve in battle once the player has evolved it into Venusaur, Charizard or Blastoise and obtained its individual Mega Stone. Nintendo also confirmed that in order to Mega Evolve Pokemon, players need to obtain an in-game bracelet called the Mega Ring which holds a Key Stone that triggers the evolution of the Pokemon.

The new Pokemon Bank lets you store and deposit up to 100 boxes worth of Pokemon, in addition to boxes already made available in the two upcoming titles. By usin the bank, players can deposit and withdraw Pokemon from multiple coies of X and Y, and additionally players can transfer Pokemon from other copies of the game.

A Digital Sundial

by John Farrier
firehose

via Tadeu

Amazing! This sundial is digital in that it shows the time with digits, but it's not electrical:

Like a digital clock, the digital sundial displays the current time using digits. In the true tradition of all sundials, the device is purely passive - it operates without electricity, and has no moving parts. Instead, the sunlight is cast through two cleverly designed masks in the shape of numbers that show the current time of day. The sundial is available in two versions, for use in either hemisphere. Placed on the inside of a south-facing window (north-facing in the southern hemisphere), the sundial can be read through the horizontal mirror. The display updates every 10 minutes, and gives a remarkably accurate record of the time during the daylight hours.
