Best Kanye West Rant Ever... or Just Another Goddamn Jimmy Kimmel Prank?

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

Soooooooooo... Jimmy Kimmel put together a skit that parodied Kanye West's recent and epic BBC One interview (in which he said he was the biggest rock star on the planet), and used kids to act out the original transcript.

PRETTY FUNNY. But apparently? Kanye didn't think so! Here are just a slight few of the amazing and furious tweets he typed in all caps last night.

WOW. So is this an actual Kanye rant or another of Jimmy Kimmel's increasingly annoying (but well played) pranks? Well, so far Jimmy is sticking to his story... or as he calls it "we're at DefKanye 5."

Retrogram

by Christopher Noessel

LogansRun127

The lifeclock is alterable, as we see when the Übercomputer sets Logan’’s lifeclock to blinking red years before he is actually due to Carousel. This procedure must be beyond the capabilities of the populace since it could be used to blackmail citizens, or, if reversible, to allow them to delay carousel.

LogansRun126 LogansRun128 LogansRun129 LogansRun130 LogansRun131 LogansRun132 LogansRun133 LogansRun134 LogansRun135

Procedure

Why this procedure was designed in a way to cause stress and discomfort on the part of the subject is unclear. Since the computer is counting on Logan and needs his cooperation, it should have taken the exact opposite approach. Even if the discomfort is a necessary part of the retrogram, the computer should have handled it like a friendly nurse, explaining that there will be some unavoidable pain, and given Logan some tools to manage it like a number to count to. And c’mon, it should skip the ominous red light.

Industrial design

The other design consideration is the placement of the divot in which Logan must place his lifeclock for retrogramming. All told, it’s pretty good. It’s a natural placement, almost difficult for Logan to avoid putting his hand in the right spot. Even if the Übercomputer is going to just “sneak up” on Logan and retrogram him without warning, it’s the right spot given that the Übercomputer seems to have no complex actuators.

LogansRun-pip

There’s an interesting issue about the divot that depends on the level of pain that Logan is feeling. If it’s too great, Logan might jerk his hand away and ruin the retrogram. In that case, the arm of the chair should hold Logan’s hand in place, like one of those automated blood pressure cuffs. But the pain we see on Logan’s face in the scene doesn’t look that great. It looks like just enough to force him to concentrate to keep it there, to do his duty and comply. In this case even if the pain isn’t a necessary part of the operation, the Übercomputer might want to add that pain in, just as a test of his continued compliance.

How LucasArts Fell Apart

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader sends this story from Kotaku's Jason Schreier about the downfall of LucasArts: "Over the last five months, I've talked to a dozen people connected to LucasArts, including ex-employees at the company's highest levels, in an attempt to figure out just how the studio collapsed. Some spoke off the record; others spoke under condition of anonymity. They told me about the failed deals, the drastic shifts in direction, the cancelled projects with codenames like Smuggler and Outpost. They told me the stories behind the fantastic-looking Star Wars 1313 and the multi-tiered plans for a new Battlefront starting with the multiplayer game known as Star Wars: First Assault. All of these people helped paint a single picture: Even before Disney purchased LucasFilm, the parent company of LucasArts, in November of 2012, the studio faced serious issues. LucasArts was a company paralyzed by dysfunction, apathy, and indecision from executives at the highest levels."

Watch Larry Jordan Make the Case for Final Cut Pro X

by Bryant Frazer

He suggested resistance comes down to a single factor: "Every single one of us hates change."

... which is why FCP7 clients who aren't non-profits or schools switch to Premiere or Avid? Because change is bad? So they'll trash their entire workflow and switch to a different vendor instead? Because nobody likes change?

His second bullet point in support are the third-party, cost-added plugins that do things that either should genuinely be best done in-house (convert FCP7 projects to FCPX) or are already available and integrated in their competitors.

In this video from IBC, recorded at the Creative Pro User Group's Sixth Annual Amsterdam SuperMeet, Final Cut Pro guru Larry Jordan considers the burning question: "Is Final Cut Pro X Ready for Professional Use?"   Spoiler: He says it … more »

glass roundup

Until now, getting a hold of Google Glass has meant joining its $1,500 Explorer program and picking them up in one of a select few cities. Today Google said it is taking Glass on the road, letting you pick up Glass and try it on for yourself. Members of the Glass team will be on hand to answer any questions.

The first event takes place Oct. 5th in Durham, North Carolina, part of the state's science-focused Research Triangle. More cities will be announced soon, the company said on Google+. At some point, Google is expected to open up retail stores to let people try their products in malls across America. Until then, your best bet for seeing Glass live might be checking it out on tour.

The Heist: How Grand Theft Auto V gets away with murder

by Sam Machkovech
firehose

"Bratty son Jimmy is overheard in one sequence playing an online video game and shouting piles of triggering garbage over his headset: “If there was a rape button, I'd press that, unless you're a faggot and you like that, in which case I'd just rape your mom, instead!”

Jimmy's father, protagonist Michael, walks in soon after to awkwardly admonish his son—”threatening to molest your online buddies is bullshit!”—providing a pretty direct commentary from Rockstar on one strain of modern gamer in the process. Very little about Jimmy is projected in a positive or even likeable way; the guy's a scummy cipher meant to send up some of the more annoying traits of many gamers. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but there has to be a better way to mock the violent homophobia of stereotypical online shooter fans than to whack the topic over the head with a baseball bat.
...
The biggest issue that I've found in my 30+ hours of play is the private dances at strip clubs, in which players can convince a dancer to go home with them by holding down a button to “touch” the dancer when a bouncer isn't looking. Get away with enough touches, and a meter fills up so much that the girl says, “Wanna go home with me?” Accept the offer, and you can drive the stripper home, hear some moaning sounds, and leave the apartment. Two steps forward, one giant lap dance back."

The game's treatment of dogs as faithful companions, at least, is spot on.

The week of Grand Theft Auto V's launch could have been a controversy cash-in for the publicity lovers at Rockstar Games. The game's checklist of features reads like Tipper Gore's personal hell: savage murders, psychotic heroes, strip clubs, an interactive torture sequence, and enough swears and offensive terms to do George Carlin proud.

And, the day before the game's launch, a man shot up a Navy yard in Washington DC. Shortly afterward, reporters dug up comments from acquaintances about the shooter's predilection for “violent video games.” We've seen where that combination can lead.

Yet largely, GTA V has been denied its relatively worthy spot on the pop-culture controversy throne. Its most unsavory bits didn't budge Miley Cyrus' twerking off of any trending lists, even as the game raked in billions.

Here is a suitcase that looks like a giant Game Boy ⊟

ThinkGeek’s “Travel Boy Carry-On Luggage" looks like a nice carry-on bag, with zipper compartments, swiveling wheels, and a three-digit combination lock. It also looks like a Game Boy! I’m sure there’s plenty of room for Game Boy towels.

I kind of want to travel with one of these full of nothing but those towels just to see what the TSA would do. But I suspect what they would do is detain and search me, which isn’t really that funny.

"The burning of East St. Louis may have resulted from a ritual commemoration, an act of aggression, or an accidental fire; circumstantial evidence primarily supports the first scenario. With strongly diminished mound and architectural construction at the site in subsequent decades, and with the coeval disappearance of key ritual-residential buildings from the regional landscape after the burning, the ancient East St. Louis fire was part of a larger pattern of historical events that mark a downward turning point in the social and political history of Greater Cahokia."

A mysterious fire transformed North America's greatest city in 1170

One thousand years ago, in the place where St. Louis, Missouri now stands, there was once a great civilization whose city center was ringed with enormous earthen pyramids, vast farmlands, and wealthy suburbs. For hundreds of years it was the biggest city in North America. Then a mysterious fire changed everything.

New legislation would kill CableCard, potentially spell trouble for third-party cable boxes

by Russell Brandom
firehose

call carriers suck forever

In 2007, the CableCard was designed to spur innovation in the set-top boxes, giving third parties a chance to plug into the cable ecosystem by installing a single card that would handle all the necessary encryption. But because of cable industry intransigence, it was a disaster. The result was too complex to properly implement and created huge headaches for both consumers and would-be box operators.

Today, Congressmen Bob Latta (R-OH) and Gene Green (D-TX) introduced a bill that would end the ban on integrated security, removing the need for Cablecards but also potentially muscling out third-party operators like Tivo. A new piece of bipartisan legislation would let cable boxes decrypt signals without a CableCard, lowering the bar for anyone looking to enter the market and hopefully opening the door for smaller companies to enter the cable box game. It's a rehash of an earlier bill from August, which aimed to limit the FCC's authority over cable programming boxes, but sank before reaching the president. This new bill was revised to end the requirement while preserving the FCC's authority to regulate the market, which will hopefully give it a better chance as it approaches a vote.

So What If Barilla Doesn't Like LGBT Gay People?

firehose

"I’m by no means the first person to say this, but being offended (or for that matter, flattered) by an entity whose sole purpose is to sell things, maybe to you or maybe to someone else, is to unavoidably endorse and enliven the insidious concept of corporate personhood."

whoa whoa whoa, there, "J. Bryan Lowder, the Slate editorial assistant for culture"

let me stop you for just a moment

Barilla didn't make the statement. A human being made the statement.

That human being happens to get paid by Barilla based on the company's success.

The company's success is the only thing that matters w/r/t him making any money at all from the company.

Ergo, by supporting the company, you're ensuring he makes money. Him, a human being.

I don't have shit against Barilla, a corporation is obviously not a person and does not have feelings about gay people, but I won't pay for Barilla products because fuck the _human being_ whose job it is to ensure Barilla products make money.

Have you seen this silly image of same- and opposite-shape pasta couples in your social feeds yet? While it may look like a juvenile parody of LGBT acceptance messaging, it’s actually a half-serious response to the outrage-news-of-the-day that Guido Barilla, chairman of so-so pasta manufacturer Barilla, doesn’t have much of a taste for gay people.

Elementary, “Step Nine”

"Lestrade was an addict whose drug of choice was the fame made possible through Sherlock’s detective work;" Rhys Ifans as an "honest, open" Mycroft; Langdale Pike is replaced by CCTV

Elementary’s first season was an origin story. In 24 episodes, it told the story of how Sherlock Holmes met Joan Watson, tracking their relationship through the early days of sober companionship, the tentative first days of a detecting partnership, and finally to the friendship around which Elementary hopes to build 200 episodes in the years to come.

This origin story worked in part because of the performances from Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, but it also worked because it was consistently evolving. Sherlock and Joan began on two opposite ends of the spectrum, but over time they began to move closer and closer together: As he began to gain greater empathy for his fellow humans, she became more in tune with his analytical approach to life. They were learning from each other, which made even the most procedural of stories told in the first season one chapter of ...

Martha Stewart needs her iPad fixed right now

'Apple Stores will perform service calls for VIPs or for an elderly or disabled person in particular need of assistance. At one point, Stewart bemoaned that a serviceperson was yet to arrive, "I am still waiting for an Apple rep to come pick up my iPad. No action yey.' ... 'Steve Jobs gave it to me! '

"Let's now talk turkey: Ipads addictive, awesome, expensive. Glass should /could be unbreakable. That the iPad works with cracked corners-great

But the cracked glass is sharp and can cut. I was just upset that I(someone)was clumsy and let the iPad fall out of the car. To fix is time"

Apparently Martha Stewart doesn't get her Apple products repaired like the rest of us. Last night, Stewart took to Twitter to complain that she had dropped and shattered the glass front on an iPad given to her by Steve Jobs himself. But while most of us would take a trip to the Apple Store, Stewart consulted her legion of nearly three million followers for advice. "What to do?" writes Stewart. "Does one call Apple to come and pick it up or do I take it?"

"Steve Jobs gave it to me!"

Though Stewart may sound woefully unfamiliar with how most consumer electronics companies service products, we're told that on rare occasions certain Apple Stores will perform service calls for VIPs or for an elderly or disabled person in particular need of assistance. At one point, Stewart bemoaned that a serviceperson was yet to arrive, "I am still waiting for an Apple rep to come pick up my iPad. No action yey [she writes. "Steve Jobs gave it to me!"

Stewart later explained the series of tweets as a matter of frustration over letting her iPad fall from her car, noting that she was concerned that the glass was sharp and could possibly cut someone. While it sounds like Stewart's iPad is still without repair, it appears she's now taking it all in stride: "I will deal with it all silently and hope that Apple will fix everything so I can function again with proper tools."

Star Citizen surpasses $20 million, secures first-person combat

by Jenna Pitcher
firehose

this fucking game
I hope he can make it, I really do
but Wing Commander + budget has historically = complete and total disappointment + Mark Hamill talking to a giant catsuit

Cloud Imperium's space combat and exploration sim Star Citizen surpassed $20 million in funding, securing first-person combat "on select lawless planets."

"What this means is that we're expanding the FPS mechanic we've already created for the ship boarding system to apply to more areas of the game," Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander and Cloud Imperium's founder, wrote on the game's official site. "Join an ongoing battle on a contested world, launch an attack on a pirate base, come to the rescue of distant colonists and fend off Vanduul raiders ... the possibilities are endless."

Roberts revealed that the community will receive an extra reward, a fish tank decoration for hangars. Fish tanks will be added to accounts "very soon," along with the hangar in an upcoming patch.

"Included in your fish tank is a rare gold Midas fish, found on the planet Cassel in the Goss System (pictured above)," Robersts wrote. "Star Citizen will allow you to add more fish to your tank by exploring distant planets and collecting new species."

The next stretch goal sits at $21 million for the addition of a salvage mechanic, a career that features its own story elements and "universe-shaping endgames." The career is exploration and scavenge-focused utilizing the game's flight and first-person shooter features to scour the game's universe for its secrets.

A $22 million stretch goal will introduce a facial capture system, which uses a series of cameras to capture real heads for in-game characters.

"This will let the team more easily create a variety of realistic characters," Roberts wrote. "In addition, the technology is mobile enough to allow us to take it on the road and capture select fans during special events!"

Funding for Star Citizen began on the site in October. A week later, Cloud Imperium launched a Star Citizen Kickstarter campaign to contribute to the crowdfunding efforts. For more information about Star Citizen and Cloud Imperium, be sure to read our recent interview with Roberts.

Senators Push To Preserve NSA Phone Surveillance

cold fjord writes "The New York times reports that the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Vice Chairman, Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), are moving a bill forward that would 'change but preserve' the controversial NSA phone log program. Senator Feinstein believes the program is legal, but wants to improve public confidence. The bill would reduce the time the logs could be kept, require public reports on how often it is used, and require FISA court review of the numbers searched. The bill would require Senate confirmation of the NSA director. It would also give the NSA a one week grace period in applying for permission from a court to continue surveillance of someone that travels from overseas to the United States. The situation created by someone traveling from overseas to the United States has been the source of the largest number of incidents in the US in which NSA's surveillance rules were not properly complied with. The rival bill offered by Senators Wyden (D-OR) and Udall (D-CO) which imposes tougher restrictions is considered less likely to pass."

Actually they’re just fruit! That’s right, just puree up your favourite fruit and then bake them to create the fruit straps. That’s the other thing I like about this recipe - you don’t need a dehydrator to make them.

Free-to-play virtual life simulator Second Life received a major overhaul following the game's 10th anniversary earlier this summer, adding new features and updating the game's graphics, according to a new trailer for the game.

In addition to giving graphics a fresh coat of paint and upgrading the game's lightning, the trailer boasts "better performance" and improved speed of avatar loading. Chat tools have also been streamlined for ease of communication between players, and users can now share in-game screenshots and accomplishments through Facebook integration.

The trailer also mentions a newly improved "welcome experience," presumably for new players who are just getting their feet wet, and a "simplified" in-game shopping experience. At the end, we see a man using what looks like a virtual reality headset to navigate the game — a feature the trailer suggests will be available "soon."

Linden Labs first launched Second Life for Windows PC and Linux on June 23, 2003. This past June, the game's community threw a number of in-game celebrations commemorating its 10th anniversary.

Judge Lucy Koh — who also heard the Apple-Samsung case — found Google's terms and conditions and privacy policy isn't clear to users. Koh subsequently allowed a class-action suit to proceed against the company (official ruling). The plaintiffs in the suit allege Google violates federal and state wiretap laws by scannning the messages sent by non-Gmail and Gmail users."
