3D-Printed Robot to Break Android PINs

by Bruce Schneier

Neat project. The reason it works is that the Android system doesn't start putting in very long delays between PIN attempts after a whole bunch of unsuccessful attempts. The iPhone does.

Attackers can slip malicious code into many Android apps via open Wi-Fi

by Dan Goodin

A vulnerability mostly affecting older versions of Google's Android operating system may make it possible for attackers to execute malicious code on end-user smartphones that use a wide variety of apps, researchers said.

The weakness resides in a widely used programming interface known as WebView, which allows developers to embed Web-based content into apps used for banking, entertainment, and other purposes. Many apps available on the official Google Play market don't properly secure the connection between the WebView component on a phone and the Web content being downloaded, researchers from UK-based MWR Labs recently warned. That makes it possible for attackers who are on the same open Wi-Fi network as a vulnerable user to hijack the connection and inject malicious code that can be executed by the phone.

"The lowest impact attack would be downloading contents of the SD card and the exploited application's data directory," the researchers wrote in an advisory published earlier this week. "However, depending on the device that was exploited this could extend to obtaining root privileges, retrieving other sensitive user data from the device or causing the user monetary loss."

Netflix no longer blocks best HD content when feuding with your ISP

by Jon Brodkin
Netflix

Netflix announced yesterday that it no longer holds back so-called "Super HD" and 3D video from any customers.

"All Netflix members, regardless of their Internet service provider (ISP), now have access to the highest quality HD streams available on Netflix," the company said.

Super HD is a 1080p stream, but it has a higher bit rate and less compression than Netflix's regular 1080p content. Netflix introduced the higher-quality stream in January, but it made it available only on ISPs that use its "Open Connect" content delivery network.

Ask Slashdot: Has Gmail's SSL Certificate Changed, How Would We Know?

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes "Recent reports from around the net suggest that SSL certificate chain for gmail has either changed this week, or has been widely compromised. Even less-than-obvious places to look for information, such as Google's Online Security Blog, are silent. The problem isn't specific to gmail, of course, which leads me to ask: What is the canonically-accepted out-of-band means by which a new SSL certificate's fingerprint may be communicated and/or verified by end users?"

art-of-swords:

European Dagger

  • Date: 1475-1500 (blade); 19th century (hilt)
  • Culture: European
  • Place of origin: Flanders (region), Belgium (the hilt later, made)
  • Medium and Techniques: steel, wood, silver

This dagger would originally have been stored in a sheath and attached to a belt at its wearer’s back. The dagger was a practical everyday tool attached to the belts of men of all ranks. A small sheath might contain several knives and tools for hunting, eating, personal grooming and self-defence. For the gentleman, the more expensive and robust dagger was a costume accessory. This dagger has a rare engraved silver pommel characteristic of silver work at the end of the 15th century.

Stephen Colbert incites spam assault on YouTube's spam assault

by Rich McCormick

Stephen Colbert isn't happy with YouTube's upcoming comment section makeover, as proved in this snippet from his show. The satirist argues that by tying a comment to its writer's Google+ account and highlighting only worthy discussions inside a video's comments, YouTube is committing an "unprecedented attack on free speech."

In jokey retaliation, he suggested his chanting army of viewers flood YouTube's comments with a block of typically spammish text.

We, the commenters of YouTube, believe in free speech as strongly as we believe in free videos of animals dressed like other animals. Therefore, we hereby declare: you can make up to 88 dollars an hour working from your house. Click here for one weird tip on how to lose your bellyfat. U R homo. Ron Paul 2012! bit.do\bNB9

Google+'s chief architect took to his own service to laugh off the attack. "I'm sorry, Mr. Colbert, but I can't quite hear you over the sound of our spam filters," said Yonatan Zunger. "You're just going to have to try a little harder if you want to get millions of people to say identical, contentless things on the Internet."

Zunger's true to his word: the vast majority of Colbert-inspired tweets are already flagged as spam, a day and a half after the show aired.

New Zealand Converting Old Phone Booths Into National WiFi Network

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes "What do you do with old public phone boxes hardly anyone uses? Convert them into a national network of WiFi hotspots is the answer in New Zealand. While others have converted their old phone booths into libraries, toilets, showers and even smoking booths, in New Zealand 700 hotspots will be live by 7 October with a target of 2000 by the middle of 2014. 1Gb of data will be free to customers of the incumbent operator, others have to pay for monthly access."

IPCC climate change report is out: It’s warmer and we’re responsible

by Scott K. Johnson

It’s that time again. The fifth report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is being rolled out today with the release of a Summary for Policymakers for the climate science portion of the report. (Sections on impacts of climate change and mitigation strategies will be released in the coming months.) Suspense about what the report would include has been somewhat deflated by leaks of early drafts, but the final wording is now available.

The group that prepared the report on the physical science behind climate change consisted of 259 climate scientists from 39 countries. (During a press conference, IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri noted that in total, 831 scientists contributed to the various sections of the report, nearly 60 percent of whom were not involved with past reports.) The purpose of the report is to summarize what scientists have learned about climate change and to convey the level of scientific confidence in each conclusion. It cites 9,200 peer-reviewed papers, two-thirds of which were published after the release of the last IPCC report in 2007.

After being drafted by a number of scientists, the Summary for Policymakers was reviewed line-by-line by representatives of nations from around the world this week. Proposals for clarifying language then had to be approved by the scientists before the final draft was released.

Bo Diddley's essential guide to drugs, food, health, money, cows, and women

by Mark Frauenfelder

via multitasksuicide
"And for God’s sake don’t be pulling on her and slapping on her. You don’t hit the girls! If you do this, you can’t miss."

Bo Diddley went around the block a few times, so heed this advice.

Alcohol and Drugs Only drink Grand Marnier, and that’s to keep the throat from drying up in a place where there’s a lot of smoke. As for drugs: a big NO!

Food Eat anytime, anything you can get your hands on. I mean it!

Health Whenever you get to feeling weird, take Bayer aspirin. I can’t stand taking all that other bullshit.

Money Always take a lawyer with you, and then bring another lawyer to watch him.

Defense I can’t go around slapping people with my hands or else I’d go broke. So I take karate, and kick when I fight. Of course, I got plenty of guns – one real big one. But guns are for people trying to take your home, not some guy who makes you mad. I used to be a sheriff down in New Mexico for two and a half years, so I know not to pull it right away.

Cows If they wanna play, and you don’t wanna make pets out of ‘em, and you can’t eat ‘em – then get rid of ‘em!

Women If you wanna meet a nice young lady, then you try to smell your best. A girl don’t like nobody walking up in her face smelling like a goat. Then, you don’t say crap like “Hey, don’t I know you?” The first thing you ask her is: “Are you alone?” If she tells you that she’s with her boyfriend, then you see if the cat’s as big as you. If you don’t have no money, just smell right. And for God’s sake don’t be pulling on her and slapping on her. You don’t hit the girls! If you do this, you can’t miss.

Hearing Just don’t put your ears in the speakers.

the full linked article is by Sady Doyle (Tiger Beatdown) and also worth a read

“Some people see the Internet as this space that’s divorced from reality, and it tends to be people who are less marginalized, who are able to see the Internet as this free-wheeling Libertarian playground that they can use for whatever they want … People who are more marginalized don’t have that luxury. And in many ways those people turn to the Internet to create fuller lives.”

TV: Newswire: Vince Gilligan follows up Breaking Bad with a detective drama at CBS

firehose

via Tadeu
"The project, titled Battle Creek, received a straight-to-series order, according to Variety, and was actually developed in 2002, when Gilligan was fresh off his work on The X-Files. It’s a detective drama about two investigators who have very different worldviews, and it’s hard to see exactly why Gilligan would have come up with that idea in the wake of his work on X-Files."

Though the network is having a rough premiere week in the ratings race, CBS is still ruler of the roost in the broadcast network world, and it reminded everybody of that by picking up the first post-Breaking Bad project of Vince Gilligan, then tossing in Emmy-winning writer David Shore (best known for his work on House) as executive producer and showrunner for good measure, as if taunting all other networks to smell what Les Moonves is cooking. (Fittingly, CBS only knows wrestling taunts from the late ‘90s, because that’s when its core audience last changed the channel.) The ...
