Baker Library in the Dartmouth College Photographic Files Collection
View a much larger selection here.
The Dartmouth College Photographic Files project began in early 2012 and is part of the Dartmouth Digital Collections. The project's goal is to make over 80,000 photographs stored in file cabinets in Rauner Special Collections available online. Images date from the early years of photography (ca. 1850s) to the present and include images of nearly all aspects of Dartmouth College life. To date there are over 36,000 photos from the collection online. We add approximetly 1,000 photographs to the collection every month. We are working through the photographs alphabetically and have reached the letter "M". See additional photographs of Feldbery Library; Dana Biomedical Library and Kresge Library.
If you have questions about the Photographic Files Collection contact Rauner Special Collections If you have questions about the ditital imaging of the collection contact William B. Ghezzi or Ryland Ianelli in the Digial Production Unit.

BUT WHY: Noelle Stevenson Leaving Lumberjanes - NooooOOOOOOooooo.
Got some bittersweet news for y’all: Lumberjanes #17 is my last issue as a lead writer on Lumberjanes, at least for the time being.
— Noelle Stevenson (@Gingerhazing) June 22, 2015
Seems like the summer’s over for Noelle Stevenson; she’s turning over the series to Kat Leyh of Supercakes, with Shannon Watters continuing writing duties. According to Stevenson, she’ll still hang around camp like so many precious memories in a consulting role. Hmm… Kelly Sue DeConnick also left a comic series this week, so… ohmigosh. Can you imagine those two working on a book together? WHAT.
This latest arc, which concludes with Lumberjanes #16-17, is Stevenson’s last, and is close to her heart.
Ugh. It sucks saying bye to a cabin mate, but we’ll always have our rad friendship bracelets and mixtapes to keep us company. Keep in touch, see you next summer, too good to be forgotten, great big hug, all the yearbook acronyms forever and ever.
We’ll see you at the movies!

It’s time to bust out those old dice bags that we totally know you still have. In a tweet, Kurtis Wiebe, Rat Queens‘ writer, teased us with some… *ahem* secrets.
Not sure about you, but we here at TMS have got a card table, bags of Cheetos, and all the soda ready to go.

Renewed calls for marked crosswalk after woman hit by car | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon
A siren's wail is no stranger to neighbors at Northeast Glisan and 24th Avenue.
"This is an accident waiting to happen," said neighbor Suzanne Calloway, who watched the woman get hit by a car on Monday afternoon.
"Accidents here are routine," said Michael Hanna, who owns a business on the same block.
Witnesses told police the woman was looking down at her cellphone, about 30 feet from the intersection when she was hit. Still, neighbors say no one knows where to cross.
"We need a crosswalk," Callaway said. "We need a crosswalk."

Prayer Circle for the Carol Corps: Kelly Sue DeConnick Is Leaving Captain Marvel - NOOOOOooooooooooooo.
firehoseso the Captain Marvel movie deal just got weird

HeroesCon is taking place this weekend in Charlotte, but it brings with it some tragic news for fans of the current Carol Danvers: comics queen Kelly Sue DeConnick will be ending her run on the series after Marvel’s Secret Wars event.
We already knew that Marvel wouldn’t be continuing with the current iteration of Captain Marvel after their big universe-colliding event (which includes DeConnick’s Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps series), so I can’t say this news comes as a total surprise. But DeConnick’s issues of Captain Marvel captured Carol’s personality in such a wonderful and geeky way, one that ensnared the hearts of lady comic readers (both new and old) everywhere, and it’s going to be hard to let go.
DeConnick confirmed the news during HeroesCon’s Milkfed Criminal Masterminds panel, on which she was a speaker along with her husband, Matt Fraction. According to ComicsBeat, DeConnick said “[s]he realized after the movie was announced that she would have to ‘dig in for three more years or drop the mic,’ but that Carol has taught her to ‘brave the next step.'”
@CaptMarvelNews So hard to go, but it’s time.
— Kelly Sue DeConnick (@kellysue) June 21, 2015
DeConnick will continue focusing on Pretty Deadly and Bitch Planet and, we assume, new awesome things that we will love just as much. Plus, there’s that deal she recently signed with Universal TV to bring her comics to the small screen, so I imagine that will keep her fairly busy, too. The Carol Corps will always love you, Kelly Sue; the force is strong with you.

Newswire: NPR listeners outraged by existence of Kim Kardashian
firehose'NPR ombudsman Elizabeth Jensen—whose job it is to filter and respond to the complaints of unhappy NPR listeners, in what sounds very like the textbook definition of Hell'
NPR has apparently been deluged with hundreds of complaints from listeners, outraged that the organization’s flagship comedy program, Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! allowed Kim Kardashian to sully its pristine airwaves with her voice. Kardashian appeared on the June 13 broadcast of the program to promote her new photography book, Selfish, and to answer some irreverent trivia questions about Korean leader Kim Jong Un from guest host Mike Pesca. But listeners weren’t outraged by Kardashian’s mediocre performance on the quiz—or even Pesca’s awful and/or amazing description of the North Korean leader as someone who “dominates the TMZ on the other side of the DMZ”—but her very existence.
Writing on her blog, NPR ombudsman Elizabeth Jensen—whose job it is to filter and respond to the complaints of unhappy NPR listeners, in what sounds very like the textbook definition of Hell—shared some ...

The Charleston newspaper put the 9 victims — not the alleged killer — on the front page
firehosevia Russian Sledges
Newspapers around the world gave front-page space on Sunday to the racist manifesto believed to be from Dylann Roof, who police say killed nine people at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina.
But not the front page of the Post and Courier, Charleston's newspaper, which made a powerful statement by focusing on the nine victims who lost their lives:
(Post and Courier)
It's a stark and lovely memorial to nine people whose deaths have often been overshadowed by the focus on the man accused of their murder.

Kimble v. Marvel: Justice Kagan's top Spider-Man jokes in a big patent case
firehosevia Russian Sledges
Kimble v. Marvel Entertainment poses a serious legal and policy question about the ability of patent holders to extract license fees after the expiration of the underlying patent that led to the fees. But it also has to do with Spider-Man merchandise, so Justice Kagan, who wrote the opinion, apparently couldn't restrain herself from cracking a series of comic book jokes:
- "The parties set no end date for royalties, apparently contemplating that they would continue for as long as kids want to imitate Spider-Man (by doing whatever a spider can)."
- "Patents endow their holders with certain superpowers, but only for a limited time."
- "To the contrary, the decision's close relation to a whole web of precedents means that reversing it could threaten others."
- "What we can decide, we can undecide. But stare decisis teaches that we should exercise that authority sparingly. Cf. S. Lee and S. Ditko, Amazing Fantasy No. 15: "SpiderMan," p. 13 (1962) ("[I]n this world, with great power there must also come — great responsibility")."
According to Supreme Court Review, Kagan is an "avid comic book fan" and must have been delighted to score the opportunity to write this decision. That last joke is actually the essence of the case. The Supreme Court is being asked to overturn an earlier precedent, and Kagan is saying that overturning precedents isn't something the Court should do without a very compelling reason. They have a responsibility to provide the country with a predictable, publicly understood code of laws, and that means being restrained in their use of the authority to change things up.

- One of the classes is literally rock'n'roll hacker. You can sway an audience of your special ability score squared times 200 people with your heartfelt street poetry. (WTF exponents!?) Plus, dated artwork of mulleted rocker with cybermods.
- The epigraph for the first chapter is literally a lyric from a Loverboy song, I shit you not.
- Many people “go to the wall” to get what they want, no matter what the cost.
- One of the author’s notes from “Maximum Mike.”
- I am only on page 10 of 250 and thIs is crammed full of more outrageous retrofuture than I could have ever hoped for the low, low price of $6. (I probably could have found it for free if I had bothered but eh.)
A horrible-tasting Mexican beer is so popular there's now a shortage in America
"After 3,200 reviews at RateBeer.com, Corona has a grade of 1.69 out of 10," according to Businessweek. "The Beer Advocate gives Corona an 'awful' rating of 55 out of 100 and the following description: 'faded aromas of sulfur, faint skunk, mild cooked veggies.'"
Corona's success is also puzzling because traditional beer brands like Budweiser are facing declining sales.
So how has Corona managed to become so popular? It's all in the marketing, according to Stock.
Constellation began marketing the beer very aggressively in recent years. The company specifically aims to get people to buy the beach-friendly beer in the winter months.
To accomplish this goal, Constellation has rolled out several ad campaigns. One featured former NFL coach Jon Gruden, while another suggested Corona was the perfect beer to accompany Thanksgiving turkey.
But it's not difficult to sell consumers on Corona's image.
"The formula is simple: sand, sun, and lime wedges," Stock writes.

Rare to the Future
(Est. 1985) "Rare is a British video game developer located in Twycross, Leicestershire. The company was established in 1985 by 'Ultimate Play the Game' founders Tim and Chris Stamper. During its early years, Rare primarily concentrated on Nintendo Entertainment System games, creating successful titles such as Wizards & Warriors, Battletoads, and R.C. Pro-Am. In 1994, Rare became a second-party developer for Nintendo and achieved international recognition with critically acclaimed games such as Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, among others. In 2002, the company was purchased by Microsoft and has since focused on developing games exclusively for Microsoft video game consoles. Notable releases include Kameo: Elements of Power, Viva Piñata, and Kinect Sports. In 2007, founders Tim and Chris Stamper left the company to pursue 'other opportunities'." (Wikipedia)
Design by: N/A
Opinion/Notes: Not much in terms of information but clearly someone didn't like the change introduced in 2010 and Rare has reverted to something closer to their pre-2010 logo focusing on their "R" instead of the name as the old logo did. The old-old logo had a pretty crappy "gold" rendering that has now been re-rendered with the computing power and prowess of 2015, which doesn't mean a better logo, it just means a much more bombastic execution of shading, highlighting, gradienting, and beveling. The stroke around the whole thing kills it though, as it then feels too much like a paint-inside-the-lines exercise. Nonetheless, the logo fits. It's for a video game company and video games are all about detail and over-the-top rendering. The wordmark becomes secondary again as in the old-old and it's quite forgettable. Overall, I guess it's an improvement for legacy fans of Rare but I did like the previous logo more.

Martha Stewart’s crumbling empire just got devoured

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, the publishing and licensing company built around an image of impeccable—if unrealistic—domestic bliss has just been devoured by brand management and licensing firm Sequential Brands.
The deal marks the end of Martha Stewart’s run as an independent company. (It went public in a 1999 IPO.) In recent years, it has suffered from sagging sales related to its core publishing business, as licensing and merchandising emerged as the company’s prime driver.

Stewart came back to the company—most recently serving as non-executive chairman—after being convicted of lying in connection with a government investigation of stock sales, and serving time in prison in 2004. But she wasn’t able to resuscitate its flailing publishing and broadcasting divisions after its audience dropped off.
With its purchase of the company, Sequential Brands is hoping to benefit from a resurgence in Martha Stewart’s retail business, which sells bedding, furniture, and housewares, where the brand still carries considerable weight.
