Pat Sajak is displeased with the goalie fight in Philadelphia

by Seth Rosenthal

There was a big ol' goalie fight in Philadelphia, instigated by the Flyers as their frustrations boiled over in a blowout defeat. Wheel of Fortune host and hockey fan Pat Sajak wasn't a fan of the fight:

Love hockey, but Flyers are part of reason it remains a niche sport. Shameful tonight (including Philly radio team.)

— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) November 2, 2013

Philadelphia fans, of course, took this totally in stride and responded with measured insight. Sajak retweeted the undisputed best reply:

Any minute now @patsajak will be the most hated man in Philadelphia. #TrebeksBetterThanYou go spin your wheel fucko, you don't know hockey

— chris santori (@mr_santorious) November 2, 2013

HE DOESN'T SPIN THE WHEEL, THE CONTESTANTS DO! WHO'S THE FUCKO NOW? Sorry. Sorry. Goalie fights bring out the worst in everybody.

Game Dev Story creator launches Pocket Harvest on Android

by Mike Suszek
firehose

attn: saucie

Game Dev Story developer Kairosoft launched its latest creation, Pocket Harvest, on Android recently. The game costs $4.99 (£2.99 in the UK) and is in the same style as Kairosoft's other creations. The farming simulator has players planting and cultivating produce like strawberries and lettuce as well as raising animals like sheep and chickens to create wool and eggs.

The game also challenges players with refining their crops so they win awards, which attracts local grocers that opt to place orders with their farms. Like other city and life simulators, players can develop attractions to bring tourists into town, building on their farm's bottom line. After developing a top-tier racing team, a game development studio, a soccer team and now a farm, we wonder what "story" Kairosoft will place us in next.

Xbox One will be DLNA-compatible, supports audio CD playback, Microsoft confirms

by Michael McWhertor

Microsoft confirmed its Xbox One will be DLNA compatible — meaning it can act as a receiver when streaming media from other devices — and will support audio CD playback, though the system itself won't support CD ripping, MP3 storage or playback.

News of Xbox One's support for media streaming and CD playback comes in the wake of an announcement from Sony that its PlayStation 4 won't support either feature, despite being supported by the company's current console, the PlayStation 3. Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida later said he was sharing feedback to the announcement with the PS4 development team for "future consideration."

In a statement to Polygon, Microsoft spokespeople said the company is working to get Xbox One DLNA certified. The Xbox One can act as a Play To receiver, allowing users to stream content from supported devices, like Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 computers and "many Windows Phones."

While Xbox One supports audio CD playback, it does not support CD ripping, a spokesperson said, a feature of the Xbox 360. It also doesn't support MP3 or AAC playback from devices like the iPod, iPhone, Zune or Windows Phone over USB. A statement notes that Xbox Music, which carries a $9.99 monthly subscription, will deliver "unlimited ad-free music through a Xbox Music Pass subscription" on Xbox One.

Gamorrean Guard Pug Has Best Pug Costume of the Year

This li'l guy's name is Chubbs, and he's upgraded his previous costumes (wampug, banthapug) to one that implies a certain level of sentience. I mean, I'm not saying the guards of Jabba's palace are brainboxes exactly, but they're not beasts of burden at least.

DoD News Aggregation Service "The Early Bird" Dead After 65 Years

by timothy
SanDogWeps writes "Periodically viewed as copyright infringement by the media, the Department of Defense's 'Early Bird' has been delivering applicable headlines to the Armed Forces since 1948. It stopped updating on October 1st, along with a number of other government products, but when the lights turned back on, The Early Bird remained dark. A number of reasons have been floated, including applicability in the internet age, cost, and a lack of interest. Others claim The Early Bird was nothing more than a propaganda machine, by culling articles that painted DoD in a favorable light."

Bicycle Generator for Emergency Electricity

by Josh Marsh

hackettBikeGenerator

[Hackett's] back at it, this time with some practical advice for the next power outage to hit your city: why not prepare for the worst by building your own bike generator? You’ll no doubt recall that hurricane Sandy devastated New York City’s grid, even flooding substations and causing massive explosions. [Hackett] experienced the Sandy outages first-hand, and knows the value of having this simple build ready to roll.

The project uses a permanent magnet DC motor (around 250 watts), which you can find in electric wheelchairs or other mobility scooters. His setup’s gear reduction spins the motor 50 times for each revolution of the bike wheel. The apparatus [Hackett] built to press-fit the wheel to the motor’s spindle is particularly clever: a threaded rod adjusts the position of the motor, which is bolted onto a hinged platform, with the other part of the hinge welded to a larger frame that supports the bike wheel.

The motor is connected to a home-built charge controller based on Mike Davis’s design, which monitors the deep-cycle batteries and both kills the charge when it’s full as well as turns charging back on after it’s reached a set level of discharge. The rest is gravy: with the deep cycle battery connected to a power inverter, [Hackett] can plug in and keep phones charged, music playing, and even (some of) the lights on. If you’re a fan of [Hackett's] straightforward, practical presentation style, check out his tripod build and his demonstration of stripping pipes of their galvanization.

[Thanks Becky!]

Anyone have some Arctic Silver I can borrow to fix my xbox? Will trade honey!

meanwhile, in Portland

Hey Hey,

I am fixing the RROD on my xbox. I need a bit a Arctic Silver for it but not much. Since I probably won't have much use for it after this project I would love to just borrow some.

In return I could gift some honey! Choice of Mountain Wildflower (local), Clover (local) or Wildflower (from California).

I can return it asap as well. Thanks

Why Amazon Fights State Sales Tax, But Supports It Nationally

by timothy
cagraham writes "The Wall Street Journal reported this morning that Amazon will begin charging customers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin sales tax today, after fighting against it for years. Amazon now charges sales tax in 16 states, affecting roughly 163 million Americans. Yet despite Amazon's continued fight against sales tax on the state-level, they support a Senate bill that would allow all states to tax online retailers. It seems like a contradiction, but it's actually a calculated move to undercut rivals like eBay (who would have a far harder time dealing with sales tax laws), and even an unequal playing field (many states that tax Amazon don't tax other online retailers)."

If you're fast enough to catch it you'll find that it's warning you that some application you're using that works with Skype will stop working in December, 2013. This applies to all sorts of software supporting headsets, cameras, ... you name it."

FBI: 23-year-old LA man is suspect in airport shooting - CNN.com

Eyewitnesses said the suspect asked people, "Hey, are you TSA?" -- the acronym for the Transportation Security Administration -- according to a federal law enforcement official. If they said "no," he would move on. In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators found information on the suspect expressing not just anti-federal government sentiment but also anger at the TSA specifically, according to the federal law enforcement official.

Watch as the boys take their first halting steps through the gorgeous Legends of Andor, and stick it to the man with a look at two titles from Victory Point Games' catalogue: Darkest Night and Moonbase Alpha. You might remember VPG as the small publisher Quinns talked about earlier in the year, whose games come with a complimentary napkin.

Pokemon Opposite Word cards ⊟ Want to teach your kids about...

Pokemon Opposite Word cards ⊟

Want to teach your kids about opposites, Japanese language and Pokemon simultaneously? J-List has this cool set of cards featuring matched sets of opposites, in simple Japanese hiragana (examples above: front/back, male/female).

I mean, if you think about how many things you’d learn at once from this card game, $14 is pretty cost effective. It’s like if your math textbook was full of examples that also happened to be common auto repair procedures.
