Film: Newswire: Here are the 19 animated films being submitted for Oscar consideration

by Caroline Siede

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the 19 films that have been submitted for Best Animated Feature Film consideration for the 86th Academy Awards. In what seems to be a fairly weak year for the category, contenders range from big-budget sequels like Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and Despicable Me 2 to more serious international entries, like Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, The Wind Rises, which—along with Disney's Frozenseems a likely frontrunner.

The Best Animated Film category was created in 2001, with Shrek the first film to win. And under Academy rules, the category won't even be considered unless there are at least eight eligible animated features released theatrically over the course of the year. The number of eligible films also determines the number of nominees: If less than 16 films qualify, the number of nominees drops from five to ...

5 things we learned from Election Night 2013 - CNN.com

by gguillotte
Christie got 57% of the female vote. He won every age group except 18- to 29-year-olds, which he narrowly lost. He also won the Latino vote and took just over a fifth of the African-American vote, a much better performance than many Republicans in recent elections. As expected, 93% of Republicans voted for Christie, according to the exit polls. But he also won two-thirds of independents and just over three in 10 Democrats in a state where Democrats and independents made up nearly three-quarters of Tuesday's electorate.

Hans Zimmer Feels "Horrible" When His 'Inception' BRAMMS Are Used In Movie Trailers | The Playlist

by djempirical

But how does the composer himself feel about it?

“Oh, it's horrible!” he told Vulture. “This is a perfect example of where it all goes wrong. That music became the blueprint for all action movies, really. And if you get too many imitations, even I get confused!” While he notes he has "a degree" of control as to when or where it's sampled, he does share how he wound up creating the sound in the first place.

Proposal: U.S. Should Abolish Daylight Saving Time and Replace It with 19 Time Zones

by EDW Lynch

19 Time Zone U.S. Map

Kevin Depew of The Awl proposes that the U.S. abolish daylight saving time and replace it with 19 time zones, each 9 minutes apart. In the new system Oregon would be in the “Hammer Time” zone and Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont would be on “Syrup Time.” Depew’s satirical proposal is inspired in part by economist Allison Shrager’s proposal to end daylight saving time and reduce the time zones in the lower 48 states to two.

Extra Life raises record $3.8 million in 2013 despite Saturday's DDoS

by Jessica Conditt
Extra Life 2013 raised $3,809,607 for the Children's Miracle Network during this weekend's 25-hour charity game marathon - and it's not over yet. The Extra Life website came under a DDoS attack on Saturday, temporarily making donations inaccessible, and the team has scheduled a re-do day for Saturday, November 9.

"I am not sure what kind of person would DDoS a charitable initiative," Extra Life founder Jeromy Adams wrote at the time of the attack. "I am so sorry that you are going through this frustration today. Our entire team is purely heartbroken that someone would do this. But it has happened. As frustrating as this is for everyone involved, it pales in comparison to what the kids we're trying to save go through. That reality, for me personally, is about the only thing keeping me somewhat calm right now."

The makeup day is officially on Saturday, but participating teams can of course reschedule their streams any day they wish. Extra Life raised $2 million before the marathon and another $1.7 million over the weekend. The 2013 fundraising period ends on December 31.

Build a universal translator

by liz

Dave Conroy has done something pretty exceptional with his Raspberry Pi: he’s turned it into a speech-recognising translator that recognises 60 different languages, and plays its native-speaker version of your phrase back for you. It can cross-translate between thousands of language pairs.

Hands up: I admit it. This is an application I just hadn’t imagined someone using the Pi for, and that it’s all done with free software on a tight budget is something that made us all smile. There’s no reason that this project can’t be shrunk down and made portable, which is great news for the likes of me and some of my friends in Japan: we have terrific conversations but they all involve a lot of mime, drawing on napkins and the help of two phones running Google Translate.

Google Translate and Microsoft Translate’s APIs are central to being able to create a project like this Raspberry Pi universal translator. Unfortunately Google has started charging $20 use of its API, but Microsoft’s API (in a bit of a reversal of what we’re used to) is currently still free, so Dave has been using that instead.

Dave’s done a beautiful job with a tutorial, and has made all his code available on GitHub for you to use or modify. As he says, even if you’re not interesting in building this translator, there are still many parts of this tutorial that might be interesting to you (speech recognition, text to speech,  translation APIs). Let us know if you build your own – and let us know what you might be using it for!

Tiny Princess Captain America finally outgrew her dress, so this Halloween, it was time for her long-promised Tiny Princess Thor! I think she might like this one better…it has a sparkly cape, after all. Also a hammer. (“What do you hit with the hammer at daycare, Tiny Princess Thor?” “*pause* I don’t know.” “Nothing! You hit nothing with the hammer!”) (She did not, in fact, hit anything with the hammer at daycare. Though she did cry when they had the kids change out of their costumes after their Halloween party, because she wanted to keep wearing her dress.)

Oh, and Big Tiny Princess Thor and Big Tiny Princess Captain America have a message for Iron Man…

Influencers on company social media are being rewarded with trips to executive retreats

"sending even low-level employees to events where they can speak directly with leaders helps democratize decision making in a company" or, you know, just walk over and talk to them, w/ever

All those viral posts could land you here.

If the phrase “perks for social media influence” makes you think of Klout and its free Axe Body Spray, you’ll be surprised to hear what business cloud services firm Salesforce is handing out to influencers. Daniel Debow, an executive at Salesforce, said today at Quartz’s Next Billion eventthat on the company’s internal social media platform, called Chatter, influencers, who are called Chatterati, are rewarded for their influence and high follower counts with trips to Salesforce’s executive retreats. The idea is that social media within companies help surface good ideas no matter who came up with them, and sending even low-level employees to events where they can speak directly with leaders helps democratize decision making in a company.

Another possibility is that these systems will one day lead to perverse incentives for employees to waste time on a company’s internal social media platform. But Debow says that hasn’t happened yet. Because Chatter leads to more transparency, it’s easy to tell who is a blowhard and who is really adding value at a company.

blockbuster keeps leaving the solar system beat

UnknowingFool writes "Blockbuster announced that it will close its remaining 300 U.S. locations by January and discontinue the DVD by mail service. Before being bought out by Dish, the chain was slowly closing locations. Dish's CEO said, 'This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment.' From an all-time high of 9,000 locations in 2004, the chain has fallen on hard times and had emerged from bankruptcy in 2011."

Job Opening: Research Scientist

by Andrew

via willowbl00
Can I do this from Portland? I would love to do this from Portland

The Center for Civic Media is currently seeking a research scientist to build and lead a research portfolio focused on the future of the newsroom. We need someone who can lead research, manage partnerships, work with graduate students and help us articulate the vision of a sustainable and impactful newsroom.

Our new research scientist will work with groups at the Media Lab and at MIT more broadly to identify new technologies that will change how we discover, report and disseminate the news. The Media Lab works with, and is supported by, a wide range of member companies. Our new research scientist will manage relationships with member companies who are interested in the future of news, the transformation of newsrooms and financial models that support quality journalism. Our new hire will organize an annual conference dedicated to the future of news. And finally, he or she will also mentor and advise masters candidates whose research focuses on news technologies. This may include teaching a class on future newsrooms.

Are you right for this job? We'd like you to have at least five years of professional experience in journalism, broadcast media, new media or software development. We'd also like you to have newsroom experience, which could include working as a journalist or a technologist supporting reporters or publishers. You'll need to be comfortable with software development, which could include experience with product management, design or software architecture. Finally, you'll need to have a demonstrated track record of working independently and leading small project teams.

There's rarely a dull moment here at the Media Lab, so to thrive in this position you'll need an excellent sense of humor, more curiosity than is probably safe, a very high tolerance for ambiguity, and the ability to pivot quickly as information and priorities change. This is a one-year term position with the possibility of extension based on funding and progress of the research.

Interested? If so, please submit your resume, cover letter, and three professional references at http://bit.ly/1cAveXz.

NFL teams have forgotten how to earn tough yards

by Matt Verderame

Last Sunday, the San Diego Chargers found themselves inside the Washington Redskins 1-yard line with a first-and-goal, trailing 24-21 with less than a minute to play.

Despite having two timeouts, the Chargers decided to run once, and throw twice on three chances to steal an important road win. All three plays failed, and ultimately so did San Diego, falling 30-24 and dropping out of the current AFC playoff picture.

This sequence not only illustrates how one game was lost, but how many have been this year due to teams becoming so pass-reliant. Only 15 years ago, you would likely have seen a team in San Diego's position bring in a fullback and two tight ends before plowing forward.

Now? A Danny Woodhead draw play, a fade pattern and a rollout by Philip Rivers.

Incredibly, this is not isolated thinking. Two Monday nights ago, the St. Louis Rams had a golden opportunity to beat the Seattle Seahawks with a fourth-and-goal from Seattle's 1-yard line. Despite having the immortal Kellen Clemens under center and having already run for 200 yards in the contest, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer made the jaw-dropping call to throw a timing route into the corner of the end zone.

818228581_medium

(via)

The result? Predictable. Clemens missed badly on the throw, and the Seahawks danced all the way to the airport.

To a lesser extent, the Buffalo Bills were guilty of goal-line gaffes. Leading 10-3 against the Kansas City Chiefs in the third quarter, Buffalo had first-and-goal at the 1-yard line following a pass interference call. To the Bills' credit, they ran twice but found nothing.

On third down, Jeff Tuel dropped back and hit Chiefs corner Sean Smith in stride for a 100-yard interception return, tying the score and changing the game. If Buffalo executes on first or second down, Tuel does not need to make that throw. Instead, the Bills can't get one yard on two tries with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, and leave the matter to Mr. Tuel.

Certainly, the rules now dictate teams throw the football more. The cornerbacks can not touch receivers at all past the 5-yard buffer zone and should a defender even graze a helmet while trying to make a tackle, it is 15 yards and a first down.

For teams with great quarterbacks, it's a no-brainer to make the skies dark. Yet, there is, and will always be, a time and place to pound the ball between the tackles. So much more can go wrong throwing a pass than can happen when running a simple dive play into the gut. Even a "safe" pass can be tipped at the line, dropped, or be affected by bad weather conditions.

The Rams and Chargers are only a few examples of this shift in thinking, albeit the most glaring, of teams that abandoned the most basic play in football.

At the end of the day, both needed three feet to win a crucial game. Both came up short.

Need For Tweed It’s getting cold in a hurry and if...

Need For Tweed

It’s getting cold in a hurry and if you’re keeping track at home, everyone and their mothers seem to be recommending tweeds for the fall and winter months. And for good reason too; they’re warm, timeless, and look killer on virtually anybody, but not all tweeds are created equal.

You’ve all seen that little Harris Tweed tag inside select garments but most people don’t think much of it. You kind of just associate it with a vague sense of quality. Well we decided to educate ourselves and find out what the story behind that tag was. Spoiler alert: it’s kind of a big deal.

First off, Harris Tweed is the only fabric in the world that’s governed by its own Act of Parliament. No joke, you read that right. As in, there’s an authority that decrees whether or not a tweed is worthy of Sparta. Crazy. It basically states that to be considered, it’s got to be made from pure virgin wool which has been spun on the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland. Moreover, it’s also got to be hand-woven in the actual homes of the islanders; every single meter is woven in sheds by independent weavers on peddled looms. No motors allowed. What?

So that little tag is literally sustaining an entire way of life for a population of people. These local artisans have age-old skills that have been passed down from generation to generation to ensure the quality of their cloth.

And here I thought tweed was tweed. So next time you see that insignia, know that it truly is a mark of excellence, with a long and rich history behind it. Check out the authority for more info.

Special thanks to Harris Tweed Hebrides for all the love from across the pond. Cheers!
