Walk Score Ranks the Walkability of Cities, Neighborhoods, & Addresses
firehoseBoston #3 walking, #3 transit, #5 bicycling
Not sure how they gave Portland #1 bicycling, as Minneapolis is 8 points higher. And the difference between PDX and SF is 0.3 points.
Walk Score is a Seattle-based company that rates the walkability of cities, neighborhoods, and individual addresses in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The company also provides 0-to-100 ratings for transit and biking. Walk Score recently posted its city rankings for 2014—according to their algorithms and analysis, New York City is the most walkable American city, and Portland, Oregon is the most bike-friendly. Walk Score services are available online and in iOS and Android apps.

Film: Newswire: And now they're making a TV show based on Ghost

In the story of something once beloved hanging around far longer than it should, its insistence on not letting go only standing in the way of new life, until finally it accepts that its time has passed, yet another movie is making its way to a TV adaptation. This time it’s Ghost, the 1990 blockbuster in which Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore had sex with pottery, and God punished them for their abomination by killing Swayze and forcing him to hang with Whoopi Goldberg for a while. To develop Ghost into a series, Paramount has tapped two guys who know all about extending franchises to the breaking point, Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-writer Jeff Pinkner and Batman & Robin producer Akiva Goldsman, a team that worked together on Fringe and thus has the necessary experience with stories blending romance and the supernatural to just sit a round out, and maybe cobble ...

Hoping to avert “collision” with disaster, Microsoft retires SHA1
Microsoft is retiring two widely used cryptographic technologies that are growing increasingly vulnerable to attacks that seemed unlikely just a decade ago.
The company's software will stop recognizing the validity of digital certificates that use the SHA1 cryptographic algorithm after 2016, officials said on Tuesday. SHA1 is widely used to underpin secure socket layer (SSL) and transport layer security (TLS) certificates that authenticate websites and encrypt traffic passing between their servers and end users. SHA1-based certificates are also used to digitally verify that specific software applications are legitimate and not imposter programs or programs that have been tampered with to include hidden backdoors.
The move comes as hardware improvements and research breakthroughs have made SHA1 and several other cryptographic hashing algorithms more susceptible to so-called collision attacks. Collisions occur when two distinct plaintext "messages" produce an identical hash or "digest." The security of an algorithm rests on it producing unique hashes for each plaintext string or file. The growing ease of producing collisions makes it possible for attackers to create digital forgeries that completely undermine the security of systems that rely on the weak algorithms.

Higher Dimensions from String Theory
String Theory predicts the existence of more than the 3 space dimensions and 1 time dimension we are all familiar with. According to string theory, there are additional dimensions that we are unfamiliar with because they are curled up into tiny complicated shapes that can only be seen on tiny scales. If we could shrink to this tiny, Planck-sized scale we could see that at every 3D point in space, we can also explore 6 additional dimensions. This animation shows a Calabi-Yau surface which is a projection of these higher dimensions into the more familiar dimensions we are aware of.

Verizon's wireless network is straining under demand in big cities, exec says
firehoseall carriers suck forever
Verizon Wireless's chief financial officer Fran Shammo said today that customers are seeing lower data speeds due to "capacity constraints" in big cities, a rare admission for the carrier.
The rapid growth of data usage is outpacing infrastructure in cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Chicago, Shammo said at a conference today. This means many smartphone users are getting bumped off Verizon's LTE network down to its slower, older 3G network. The company claims LTE is up to 10 times faster than 3G.
Verizon has the largest LTE network in the US, having invested early compared to its competitors. It also claims to have the most reliable nationwide coverage, so it's a surprise to hear a top executive acknowledge the problems many customers have noticed on their own.
It's surprising to hear a top executive acknowledge the problems customers have noticed
Still, Shammo was optimistic, saying that "going into next year we will be ahead of the curve again." Verizon has also invested an additional $500 million in infrastructure, he says. Still, expect it to be a while before the carrier can stop falling back on 3G. The company has said it doesn't plan to start deprecating the increasingly-outdated network until 2015.

The Colorfully Decorated Homes of the Polish Village of Zalipie

In the secluded Polish village of Zalipie, locals decorate their homes with colorful hand-painted floral designs in a tradition that stretches back to the late 19th century. It’s not entirely clear how the tradition came about, but it may have been a method for concealing soot stains caused by smoke from fireplaces. With the advent of modern ventilation, the paintings became purely decorative and have spread to other structures in the village including a footbridge and a number of dog houses. For more on Zalipie, see this Kuriositas post.
