Animal Crossing AR Cards ⊟
Oh man, for Japan only. New eShop point cards coming to Japan interface with the (again, Japan-only) Photo Together app to allow you to put Animal Crossing characters in your real-life photos. Multiple characters can be displayed from each card!
I did not know how badly I needed to insert happy little Leif into all my photos. There are also Pikmin cards. Cute!
This comes out of a mini Nintendo Direct which – I’ll save you some time – is pretty much all stuff we saw already.

Cyberpunk adventure 'Read Only Memories' from GaymerX founders
Read Only Memories plays out in 2064 Neo-San Francisco, when all forms of personal electronics have been replaced by little robot buddies called ROMs. As a young journalist, the main character must uncover the mystery of a vanished friend while surviving the feral streets of this future city. Read Only Memories takes inspiration from 90s adventure games, and one in particular: Snatcher, the cyberpunk adventure created by Hideo Kojima.
Read Only Memories comes from Midboss Games, a newly established studio from the founders of GaymerX, a convention focused on queer issues in gaming. GaymerX was funded via Kickstarter in September 2012, and Midboss is looking for the same success with Read Only Memories.
The team needs $62,064 by December 13 on Kickstarter, and it's part of Ouya's Free the Games Fund, meaning Ouya will match all pledges up to $62,000 if it all works out. The game is slated for PC, Mac, Ouya, iOS and Android, and Midboss wants to have a playable build ready for GaymerX2 in July.
Read Only Memories has queer characters, but it isn't "a gay game," GaymerX founder Matt Conn says: "A lot of queer characters can be presented on an equal level with their straight counterparts. It's really important that we create more games that have queer characters in them, but the point is also not to shoehorn them in."

Fifa urged to help French footballer being 'prevented from leaving Qatar'
Fifa has been asked to intervene in the case of a French footballer who says he is being prevented from leaving Qatar.
His name is Zahir Belounis. This is the country to which FIFA awarded the 2022 World Cup. Belounis’ plight isn’t unique, but hopefully its high profile nature will cast some light on the treatment of migrant workers in Qatar.
It’s unlikely, though.
The treatment of immigrant laborers in much of Qatar and the UAE is slavery. Nothing less.

NSA has no idea when it spies on Americans, top lawyer says
firehosegreat
Speaking before a senatorial subcommittee on Wednesday, the intelligence community’s top lawyer told senators that the National Security Agency is incapable of knowing how often Americans’ data is captured inadvertently. Robert Litt, general counsel at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy the problem is it would be “very resource-intensive” to figure out whether foreign targets are communicating with Americans, according to The Hill.
While Americans theoretically have protection from intrusive government searches under the Fourth Amendment, foreigners certainly do not. And Litt noted that determining that "second hop" person’s nationality would “perversely require a greater invasion of that person’s privacy.”
However, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who chairs the committee, suggested that it would be possible “through statistical sampling.”

Staking out Twitter and Facebook, new service lets police poke perps
Local law enforcement is getting the kind of technological boost that used to be limited to three-letter agencies thanks to Web-based software services that mine social media for intelligence. At last month's International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference in Philadelphia, LexisNexis showed off a new tool it will bundle with its research service for law enforcement agencies—one that will help them "stake out" social media as part of their criminal investigations.
Called Social Media Monitor, the cloud-based service will watch social networks for comments and activities that might offer clues to crimes in the physical world. With direct connections into a variety of social media services' feeds, it will help police plow through Twitter and Facebook in search of evidence that could lead to arrests.
Social media is already a major tool for police departments. Some city police departments, such as the Boston Police Department, have integrated monitoring of social media into their Real Time Crime Centers (RTCCs)—operations that have been aided by federal funding in a number of large cities. And because criminals often use social media themselves (to their own detriment), social media monitoring is paying off. For example, in 2011 analysts at Cincinnati's RTCC were searching the social network connections of suspects for one crime and found video of an armed robbery posted to a Facebook page by one of the perpetrators.

Here's a little-known fact: You know the spacesuit Neil Armstrong wore on the first moonwalk?
Here's a little-known fact: You know the spacesuit Neil Armstrong wore on the first moonwalk? Turns out that suit was made by a bra manufacturer in Dover, Deleware. As Andrew Chaikin explains at Smithsonian, the seamstresses who hand-stitched NASA's spacesuits were used to devoting their needlework to an entirely different kind of rubber garment.

Why Diablo 3 won't get an offline mode
firehoseonline single-player game beat
Diablo 3 will not receive an offline mode, in part because of lessons Blizzard Entertainment learned from Diablo 2, lead designer Kevin Martens told Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
Martens said that he "studied" player reaction to Diablo 2 "for a living" and wanted to prevent situations that stopped people from playing with each other in the sequel. Requiring everyone to be online in Diablo 3 solved that problem and gave players incentive to team up.
"The game is most fun when you can play with other people," he said. "To be ghettoed off to the side and not part of the real game, we didn't want that to happen. This is an online game. We want people to play together. All of that predates the auction house.
"That was the wrong choice to allow people to play offline, and we still stand by that. And we think Internet access is widespread. If someone has no Internet access, then yeah, Diablo 3 is not the game for them."
When asked why Blizzard couldn't just remove the online requirement, perhaps alongside the soon-to-be disbanded auction houses, he said it's because that would fundamentally change the game Blizzard set out to make.
"We didn't make that game. That's the straight-up answer. We did not make that game, and we're not going to turn this game into that game. We have the online mode because we learned a lot over the many, many years that Diablo 2 was in development."

TV: Great Job, Internet!: Larry David took the most Larry David-like photo while sitting courtside at a Knicks game
The New York Knicks got crushed by the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, but just because the game wasn’t very entertaining doesn’t mean there was nothing going on in the stands. Sitting courtside were Nelly, Justin Bartha (National Treasure), and Larry David, the craziest east coast recreation of those times the Entourage guys were jockeying for Lakers tickets. The photo getting tossed around the Internet liberally is the one above, with David giving his best Curb Your Enthusiasm reaction to the events, from the crossed arms, to the frowning expression, to those socks. But For The Win dug up the other Getty photos from the night, of Larry smiling easily, and at least enduring the company of others in his courtside seat. It just goes to show that when the Knicks are playing terribly, the real story is the celebrities watching the game.
