Edward Snowden is almost broke

by Cory Doctorow
Edward Snowden's lawyer reports that he is almost broke, having spent his savings on subsistence since he went into exile; he has been relying on "some organizations and enterprising citizens" for his ongoing expenses. There doesn't appear to be an easy way to give money to Snowden himself (you can send BitCoins here), though there's a legal defense fund operated by Wikileaks. (via Hacker News)

Secret treaty leaks, Mexico wants copyright extended even more than US does

by Cyrus Farivar

About 18 months ago, we brought you the story of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a massive free-trade agreement that has been in the works for years—in secret.

On Wednesday, a working draft of the “intellectual property chapter” of the TPP was published on WikiLeaks. Unlike previous leaks, this one is very recent—dating to the most recent negotiating round in August 2013. Importantly, it also has comments and annotations from each country, with their current position on any given provision. The next round of TPP talks is set for November 19-24 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As we reported last year, the TPP aims to provide “comprehensive market access,” “regulatory coherence,” and, most notably for the tech community, a commitment "to ensure an effective and balanced approach to intellectual property rights among the TPP countries.” The IP chapter represents just one part of the overall treaty.

The Nice Girls Of Lulu, So-Called 'Yelp For Men'

firehose

'Among Lulu’s 2.5 million reviews — 500,000 of which were requested by the guys themselves — the average score is 7.5. Among reviewers who self-identify as ex-girlfriends and hookups, 70 percent of reviews are 7.0 or higher. When the reviews come from friends, 80 percent are higher than 7.0. (One third of Lulu reviews are from hookups and exes. The rest are from friends, relatives, crushes, and current girlfriends.) According to Lulu’s calculations, the three most popular hashtags are #WillActSilly, #CleansUpGood, and #EpicSmile. Positive hashtags are selected three times more frequently than negative ones. “It’s definitely skewing positive,” Lulu marketing director Deborah Singer says. “Girls aren’t using Lulu to bash guys. They’re going on to shout about the good guys, to recommend their friends.”
...
Separated into positive and negative groupings, the hashtags seem to be the most confounding part of the experience for men. Categorizing #Trekkie, #VideoGamer, and #420 as negatives seemed unfair; #Man-scaped was invasive; #ChristianGrey and #MrDarcy said more about the women than the men; #SleepsintheWetSpot, indicating postcoital chivalry, grossed everyone out.

Women and men alike fretted about the “message” that hashtags like #AlwaysPays and #WillWatchRomComs send. Considering how quickly I adapted to Lulu’s high-skewing score system, I did worry that extended use would somehow indoctrinate me to Lulu’s value system or, at the very least, its moderately grating #Smells-Amazeballs voice.'

Nine months and over 1 million users later, Lulu estimates it reaches one in four college girls in America. But a funny thing happened on the way to the man-hating free-for-all: The women were nice.

Brooklyn Army TerminalCass Gilbert | Via

The Brooklyn Army Terminal is a large complex of warehouses, offices, piers, docks, cranes, rail sidings and cargo loading equipment on 95 acres (380,000 m2) between 58th and 63rd Street in SunsetPark, Brooklyn, New York. It was the largest military supply base in the United States through World War II, and was later redeveloped for commercial use.

The complex was also known as the U.S. Army Military Ocean Terminal and the Brooklyn Army Base, as part of the New York Port of Embarkation. It was designed by Cass Gilbert and completed in September 1919. It was the largest military supply base in the United States through World War II. By the time the base was closed in the 1970s, over 3 million soldiers and 37 million tons of military supplies had passed through the terminal. The 95 acre complex had its own railroad line, police and fire departments.

TV: Newswire: The Real World will now be about seven strangers picked to live in a house with their exes

by Sean O'Neal

After 21 years and 28 seasons of making slight tweaks to The Real World’s formula by adding copious alcohol and only casting terrible people, producers of the long-running MTV series have decided it’s time to see what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting convoluted. They’ve announced that their upcoming, San Francisco-set, yes-holy-shit-it’s-really-the-29th season will be retitled Real World: Ex-Plosion—not because it finds its cast forming a shitty, backbiting superhero team or spontaneously combusting, but because it will also involve their exes.

According to Entertainment Weekly, this first genuine shake-up to the show’s once-groundbreaking format will take place in a season that begins like any other, with seven strangers moving into a ridiculously nice house they will then fill with their own tears, vodka vomit, and self-satisfied farts. But after four weeks, they’ll all take off on a day trip, only ...

TV: Newswire: FXX cancels Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell

by Erik Adams

FX’s decision to split in three has claimed its first victim, as Defamer reports that Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell’s time on FXX has come to an end. The survivor in the FX late-night cagematch of 2012 (Brand X With Russell Brand: Never forget), Totally Biased was one of the flagships of the great FXX migration, a move that spread the talk show’s satirical POV across four nights. Four, lonely, windswept nights where reruns of network sitcoms and the 20th Century Fox movie library were all the show had to keep it company. When Bell and crew had a slate of original programming to follow, the show performed modestly; viewership reached the triple digits only when the show followed fellow expatriates It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The League. According to Deadline, however, the audience for the expanded Totally Biased was as low as 12 ...

Audio of Boston Symphony Orchestra Conductor Announcing Kennedy Assassination to Audience

by EDW Lynch

On November 22, 1963, the Boston Symphony Orchestra was about to begin a concert when the conductor, Erich Leinsdorf, announced to the audience that President Kennedy had been assassinated. The shocking announcement and the audience’s collective gasp of dismay is captured on this audio recording. Leinsdorf then announced a change in programming—the orchestra would play the “Funeral March” from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3. William Shisler, the orchestra’s long-serving librarian, was present at the concert and recounts his memory of that day in this Time article.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a press report over the wires—we hope that it is unconfirmed, but we have to doubt it—the President of the United States has been the victim of an assassination. We will play the Funeral March from Beethoven’s Third Symphony.

Colin Kaepernick responds to Trent Dilfer's criticism

by James Dator

The third-year quarterback fired back at ESPN's Trent Dilfer criticizing his development.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick doesn't appreciate criticism leveled at him following his team's loss to the Carolina Panthers. The third-year quarterback responded to ESPN's Trent Dilfer, who called him a "remedial" passer that struggles when teams take away his first read.

Dilfer's core criticism stemmed from a perceived lack of development, which he elaborated to Sports Illustrated on Tuesday.

Reached Tuesday, Dilfer said while Kaepernick remains "an incredible player and an incredible athlete,'' his development as a passer has "plateaued'' this season, and he hasn't made enough progress in his second season as a starter.

It was unclear whether Kaepernick would defend himself against the claim, but the wait wasn't long. He dismissed Dilfer's critique on Wednesday, as reported by Eric Branch. On Wednesday, Kaepernick dismissed Dilfer's critique because he isn't in the building. He also acknowledged that he hadn't heard what was said about his development.

"I didn't hear what he had to say, but he's not in the building with us," Kaepernick said. "So what he's saying really doesn't affect me at all. I'm worried about what this team thinks and what I'm doing in here with my teammates."

Kaepernick also suggested media ask "if he (Dilfer) knows my progression first." Regardless of discussions about how many reads he has or whether he is progressing, there's no denying Kaepernick has regressed statistically in 2013.

It isn't just Trent Dilfer raising questions about the development of the third year quarterback. FOX's Brian Billick shared similar sentiments with Eric Branch, but said the 49ers are still lucky to have him.

"Is he a completed entity right now? No," Billick said. "Is there development left to be done? Yes. Did we get ahead of ourselves because of his success and run to the Super Bowl? Possibly. But, I'll tell you what, there's a whole of teams that would love to have the dilemma of developing Colin Kaepernick right now."

Kaepernick started seven games in 2012, throwing for a total of 1,608 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. In nine games this season, he has thrown for less yards, touchdowns, completing less passes, all while throwing twice as many interceptions.

The San Francisco 49ers shouldn't be phased by the criticism. They hold a Wild Card spot now and still have a chance to pressure the Seattle Seahawks at the top of the NFC West. This latest round of criticism and response speaks to a larger issue of the endless cycle of building up and breaking down young players. It wasn't long ago that Dilfer's co-worker Ron Jaworski believed Kaepernick "could be one of the greatest quarterback ever," which still could be true -- but perhaps it's time for evaluation before exaggeration, on both sides.

Public losing trust in President Obama amid healthcare and NSA controversies

by Chris Welch

Six months of alarming revelations about US surveillance programs and the botched launch of HealthCare.gov have taken a toll on President Obama's standing with the American people. Trust in the president is trending downward, according to a recent Gallup poll. 47 percent of those surveyed disagreed with the notion that Obama "is honest and trustworthy," though a slight majority (50 percent) still think the description applies. It's a worrying development for a president whose personality often polls well with the public. Worse yet, 52 percent of voters answered that Obama is not honest and trustworthy in a similar poll from Quinnipiac University, with just 44 percent supporting the president. "Any elected official with an 8-point trust deficit is in serious trouble," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

President Obama's job approval rating has also taken a hit of late; Quinnipiac's most recent poll shows that 54 percent of participants disapprove of the way Obama is handling things. The Obama administration is still trying to resolve issues that have plagued HealthCare.gov since the website launched last month. Only six people managed to successfully sign up on day one, and HealthCare.gov saw just 27,000 signups in all of October. Obama has personally been criticized for falling short on his promise that any Americans happy with the health insurance they had before the Affordable Care Act was signed into law would be able to keep their policy. For some, that has turned out to be untrue. Obama has apologized for the blunder and insists his administration is working to end unexpected policy cancellations.

Seen, A Tool For Aggregating Social Media Posts About News Events

by Kimber Streams

Twitter IPO

Seen is a tool created by Seen Co. that creates useful timelines of news and other events by aggregating and ranking social media posts about the event. Seen was recently featured in Wired and in an interview with Popular Mechanics, CEO and co-founder Tarikh Korula explained the service’s purpose:

When something like the Boston Marathon [bombing] happens, some of the first media seen coming out of the event is on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Vine. Most users on the Web don’t use those services, perhaps with the exception of Facebook. Most people aren’t on Vine. They aren’t on Instagram. Only 200 million of the 2 billion people on the Web are on Twitter.
