Oxford Bags
Yesterday’s post on fashion cycles reminded me that I have these photos sitting on my computer. These are “oxford bags” - a style of ridiculously baggy trousers that was popular in the early 20th century. They were often made of flannel wool, and originated with undergraduate students at Oxford University (hence the name). At the peak of their popularity in 1925, the bottom hem of men’s pant legs was almost always under 20 inches in circumference. (For reference, most “fashionable” trousers today have a circumference of 16 to 18 inches for suits, and maybe 15 to 17 inches for odd trousers). Oxford bags, in contrast, sometimes measured 40 inches or more.
You would not be wrong to think of them as the gentleman’s version of Jncos.

Budda Baker

The No. 1 prospect from the state of Washington has broken things off with the Ducks. Will he stay home and play for the Huskies?
Budda Baker, one of the top recruits on the West Coast this year, decommitted from Oregon on Friday afternoon. It sounds like is no longer considering the Ducks.
I have decommited from Oregon an decided to reopen my recruitment Coach H an the ducks are a great program just not the right program for me
— budda baker (@buddabaker32) January 17, 2014
Baker is ranked by 247 Sports' composite rankings as the 53rd-best prospect in the 2014 class. The rankings also list him as the fifth-best athlete in the nation, as well as the No. 1 player from the state of Washington. Baker originally committed to Oregon on Dec. 20, but when rumors of him visiting Washington in the near future began to swirl, some wondered if the four-star prospect was beginning to change his mind.
Baker will visit the Huskies and new head coach Chris Petersen this weekend, according to multiple reports.
So there you go. Budda Baker decommits from Oregon, scheduled an official visit to UW.
— UW Dawg Pound (@UWSBN) January 17, 2014
In addition to Oregon and Washington, Baker was also strongly considering UCLA. He currently has an official visit to UCLA set up for Jan. 24, though as all things are in recruiting, it's a fluid situation.
Baker is a product of Bellevue High School, which is just down the road from Seattle. At 5'10 and 175 pounds, he could probably play on either side of the ball, though most feel he will eventually wind up as a slot receiver or safety.

The premiere of Patton Oswalt’s comedy special didn’t really go exactly as planned. While Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time was supposed to go up on EPIX’s website last night in advance of the channel’s airing of the special tonight, the network didn’t actually get the show up at the designated time, despite Oswalt’s public countdown and urging. That led to a pretty rough and hilarious Twitter screed directed at the network from the comedian, in which Oswalt called the network “completely incompetent,” and said the situation was “fucking embarrassing.”
Luckily, Oswalt went on to make the best of the situation by tweeting out what he said were highlights from the special, including the notion that he enters the stage by rising “from the floor, nude” as the entirety of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” plays. He then “recite[s] the third chapter of Judy Blume’s Wifey while goose stepping through ...
Comedians have long been classified as “crazy,” according to the diagnoses of America’s many Dr. Grins and Mixed Nuts clinics. But now the equally esteemed British Journal of Psychiatry has weighed in with its own pronouncement, declaring that comedians seem to have “high levels of psychotic personality traits”—traits that actually prove beneficial to the formulation of jokes, provided they do not first drive you to arson or homicide.
“Although schizophrenic psychosis itself can be detrimental to humor,” said the University of Oxford’s Gordon Claridge, whose own dry wit suggests he’s also pretty fucked up, “in its lesser form it can increase people's ability to associate odd or unusual things or to think 'outside the box.'” Other advantages of being slightly psychotic include manic thinking’s ability to help you “form new, original, humorous connections,” a tendency toward antisocial behavior that allows you to discuss, in public ...

After having delighted British audiences with its ribald depiction of sex taking place within the confines of a box, rather than the more traditional hallway full of slamming doors, the Channel 4 series Sex Box could be making its way to America. Relativity Media has purchased the U.S. rights to the one-off special that aired in the UK last fall, in which couples are asked to go into the “sex box”—what the uptight call “a room”—and have sex, then emerge from said sex box to talk about their sexy sex with sex experts like Dan Savage, all in front of a live studio audience who knows they just had sex.
“Are we not all always having sex within the ‘box’ that is the imposition of social mores and gender stereotypes?” none of these people say, because that would be boring. Instead, as seen in the video below, there’s the slightly ...
For years, moviegoers over the age of 50 have attended the picture show, only to be affronted by the inane, childish screeching of 30-year-olds, the American Association for Retired Persons is doing something about it. It’s created the AARP “Movies For Grownups” seal—an offshoot of its Movies For Grownups Awards—to stamp the organization’s approval upon movies that it believes would appeal to the 50+ crowd, based on their incorporation of grown-and-sexy themes and actors, and other things mature adults like. For example, the AARP’s inaugural “Movie For Grownups” is Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a film that includes performances by Kevin Costner, age 58, and its director Kenneth Branagh, age 53, and concerns geopolitics and arguing, two things that older people enjoy.
Variety notes that Jack Ryan also “admittedly stars a 33-year-old Chris Pine as the famous CIA analyst,” but presumably the AARP was able to overlook Pine’s infantile ...

Tuna is an incredibly lovable 3 year-old Chihuahua-Dachsund mix (aka a Chiweenie) who was born with an aggressive overbite and recessive jaw line which make him look a little like the Simpsons character Charles Montgomery Burns in profile, but in a good way. Rescued by Courtney Dasher in 2011, Tuna since has taken the internet by storm with a huge Instagram following and apparel, calendars and pet products all made in his adorable image.

the donations page is for Hurst's sister, who has to leave her full-time job unpaid to take care of Hurst
Michelle Hurst, who plays the strict, fastidious Miss Claudette on Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black, was hospitalized following a serious car accident several weeks ago. Details haven't been released about the specific nature of her injuries, but it is known that doctors operated near her spine, and had her in a medically induced coma for 16 days. Hurst is now out of the coma and is responsive, but most likely has a long recovery ahead of her. The UNC Chapel Hill Hospital where Hurst is recuperating isn't allowing flowers, but several of her fellow cast and crew members have set up a donations page to help Hurst and her family pay for her care.
The rally against New Orleans' proposed noise ordinance — which was withdrawn last night — has moved from Duncan Plaza into City Hall and has now entered City Council chambers.

John Kricfalusi
Here’s something weird for you: Miley Cyrus and John Kircfalusi, the animator and Ren & Stimpy creator often goes by John K., are pals. They apparently met a while back over a dinner in which Kricfalusi drew stuff for her for more than two hours.
Now, Kricfalusi is serving as a vaguely defined artistic director for Cyrus’ tour in support of her album Bangerz, which starts up next month. I told you it was weird.
Here’s how Cartoon Brew describes their partnership:
“His art is driving a lot of the tour,” Cyrus said of her upcoming “Bangerz” tour which kicks off next month. “Our whole tour is literally based on animals,” and will include “imaginative animals [John K has] made on his own.”
Kricfalusi has worked with a number of musicians over the years, directing music videos for Björk, Tenacious D, “Weird” Al Yankovic, and the Rolling Stones. He has a blog that he regularly updates, but other than a 2011 couch gag on The Simpsons, some Adult Swim commercial bumpers and a few other projects, he has seemingly kept a fairly low animation profile of late. IDW re-released the artist’s early Spumco comic book last February, however.
Miley Cyrus has had quite the opposite of a low profile over the past year. It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.
