"I described [the medievals] as literate people who had lost most of their books. And what survived..."

I described [the medievals] as literate people who had lost most of their books. And what survived was, to some extent, a chance collection. It contained ancient Hebrew, classical Greek, classical Roman, decadent Roman and early Christian elements. It had reached them by various routes. All Plato had disappeared except part of the Timaeus in a Latin version: one of the greatest, but also one of the least typical, of the dialogues. Aristotle’s logic was at first missing, but you had a Latin translation of a very late Greek introduction to it. Astronomy and medicine, and (later) Aristotle, came in Latin translations of Arabic translations of the Greek. That is the typical descent of learning: from Athens to Hellenistic Alexandria, from Alexandria to Baghdad, from Baghdad, via Sicily, to the university of Paris, and thence all over Europe…

A scratch collection, a corpus that frequently contradicted itself. But here we touch on a real credulity in the medieval mind. Faced with this self-contradictory corpus, they hardly ever decided that one of the authorities was simply wrong; never that all were wrong. To be sure, in the last resort it was taken for granted that the Christian writers must be right as against the Pagans. But it was hardly ever allowed to come to the last resort. It was apparently difficult to believe that anything in the books - so costly, fetched from so far, so old, often so lovely to the eye and hand, was just plumb wrong. No; if Seneca and St Paul disagreed with one another, and both with Cicero, and all these with Boethius, there must be some explanation which would harmonize them. What was not true literally might be true in some other sense; what was false simpliciter might be truesecundum quid. And so on, through every possible subtlety and ramification.

It is out of this that the medieval picture of the universe is evolved: a chance collection of materials, an inability to say ‘Bosh’, a temper systematic to the point of morbidity, great mental powers, unwearied patience, and a robust delight in their work. All these factors led them to produce the greatest, most complex, specimen of syncretism or harmonization which, perhaps, the world has ever known. They tidied up the universe.

Hackers Steal Law Enforcement Documents From Microsoft

by timothy
wiredmikey writes "Microsoft on Friday said that attackers breached the email accounts of a "select number" of employees, and obtained access to documents associated with law enforcement inquiries. According to the company, a number of Microsoft employees were targeted with attacks aiming to compromise both email and social media accounts '..We have learned that there was unauthorized access to certain employee email accounts, and information contained in those accounts could be disclosed,' said Adrienne Hall, General Manager at Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group. 'It appears that documents associated with law enforcement inquiries were stolen,' Hall said. Targeted attacks like this are not uncommon, especially for an organization like Microsoft. What's interesting about this is that the incident was significant enough to disclose, indicating that a fair number of documents could have been exposed, or that the company fears some documents will make their way to the public if released by the attackers—which may be the case if this was a 'hacktivist' attack."

Call Of Duty Ghosts Just Can’t Stand Those Awful Women

by John Walker
firehose

#gamerculture

By John Walker on January 23rd, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Call Of Duty’s online world has something of a reputation. A reputation for being a cesspit of revolting idiocy, bile and cruelty, rather spoiling it for those who just want some multiplayer shootyfun. So it is to this that Activision have targeted their latest trailer for Ghosts Onslaught. To the idiots, I mean.

Call Of Duty is, in Activision’s mind, what men do when they can finally escape the horrors of hideous wives or children. A game for men only. MEN. Not those awful nags! Just the lads! Cor eh guys, don’t the missus just go on and on and stop you from enjoying shouting obscenities into your microphone because of something about raising the kids or whatever she’s whinging about now?! Because it’s apparently 1994, and we’re all reading Loaded.

My explanation: an advertising executive time travelled from a more pathetic age. “Hey guys,” he said, to the room full of other men. “What if we show massively traumatised women while men enjoy a sit down and a game of COD?” The others all sit up in interest, slicking back their slicked back hair. “Go on, go on,” says their 27 year old boss, coughing slightly on the cigarette he’s trying to smoke. “You’ve got our synergistic attention.”

“Okay,” continues the inspired one, “and you see…” He pauses, looks around the room at the open-mouthed rapture of his colleagues, and breathes in the moment. “Well ‘COD’ – that sounds a bit like ‘KID’. We could say…” He stops again, as everyone leans forward. “We could say, ‘CODNAPPED’!”

There’s silence for a moment. And then just the throng of applause. One man weeps with joy, and is immediately shot in the head. The rest lift our genius onto their shoulders, and carry him from the room, cheering and explaining to each other about their potential for consuming alcohol and that time they saw a boob.

And scene.

It’s rather pitiful really, isn’t it? Which is a bit of a shame, because blimey, the game bits look pretty decent. Call Of Duty: Ghost’s single player was utterly dreadful, but look at those massive alien things! That’s part of Extinction Episode 1: Nightfall. That bit looked pretty interesting. Just showing the game, I imagine they’d have appealed to not only the fuckwits they’re apparently targeting with the rest of the ad, but also, you know, other people. I’m pretty sure other people have some money too.

Star Citizen funding passes $37 million, new systems added

by Alexa Ray Corriea
firehose

oh come on

Space sim Star Citizen is continuing to steadily pull in funding, passing $37 million from project backers yesterday, developer Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts wrote on the game's official blog.

Since launching in October 2012, the crowdfunding campaign has pulled in $37,117,312 from 369,742 backers at the time of writing.

Reaching this dollar amount unlocked an additional star system for players to explore, nestled in the center of a new nebula. The Tanga System once contained a massive red giant star in its center, with a small planet suitable for life orbiting the system's outer ring. But the star collapsed into a white dwarf, blasting away the planet's atmosphere and throwing it into a deep freeze forever. Players will find this system as it is now: a collapsed star with dead planets orbiting around it.

Cloud Imperium is also adding another new system containing an "unexplored natural wonder." The new UDS-2943-01-22 system is a trinary star system, which means three stars are orbiting each other — two collapsed white dwarfs and a pulsar. This has created a strong gravitational force, and Star Citizen's scientists believe a jump point to get to the system could be nearby in an area of space already explored by humans. Players will get the change to find that jump point and discover if planets exist in the trinary system.

Roberts writes that the next stretch goal at $38 million will unlock another area, a four-planet system featuring one habitable planet — a waterworld including a small human colony and developing microorganisms in the depths of its cold oceans. Players can now vote on what the $40 million stretch goal will include: a lost human colony, alien science outpost or a ghost world.

World of Warcraft's redesigned human female model unveiled

by Samit Sarkar
firehose

surprise! her waist got even narrower

Blizzard is revamping some of its character models with World of Warcraft's next expansion, World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor, and the studio revealed a work-in-progress version of its redesigned human female race today.

According to Chris Robinson, World of Warcraft's senior art director, Blizzard's goal in changing the game's player models is to deliver a "spiritual update" to the existing characters — to bring them up to par with the newer models of recent expansions like Mists of Pandaria, while "retaining the core look and feel that has always made them your character."

The updates involve notable jumps in polygon count and texture resolution; an increase in the amount of "bones" to allow for better animations and facial expressions; and the same rigging technology that Blizzard used to animate the Pandaren of Mists of Pandaria.

"For the human female this meant we could give her more muscle definition and personality in the face while still staying true to the overall look and spirit of the original. Hopefully this will also help show her as more of the capable fighter that she is," said Joe Keller, senior character artist for World of Warcraft at Blizzard.

You can check out images of the redesigned human female model below; the current model is all the way on the left. Warlords of Draenor, which Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2013, will be available later this year.

“Cakes have gotten a bad rap. People equate virtue with turning down dessert. There is always one person at the table who holds up her hand when I serve the cake. No, really, I couldn’t she says, and then gives her flat stomach a conspiratorial little pat. Everyone who is pressing a fork into that first tender layer looks at the person who declined the plate, and they all think, That person is better than I am. That person has discipline. But that isn’t a person with discipline; that is a person who has completely lost touch with joy. A slice of cake never made anybody fat. You don’t eat the whole cake. You don’t eat a cake every day of your life. You take the cake when it is offered because the cake is delicious. You have a slice of cake and what it reminds you of is someplace that’s safe, uncomplicated, without stress. A cake is a party, a birthday, a wedding. A cake is what’s served on the happiest days of your life. This is a story of how my life was saved by cake, so, of course, if sides are to be taken, I will always take the side of cake.”

Eater Inside: Inside Luchador Bar & Lounge, Open in the Trebol Space

by Erin DeJesus

[Avila, 1/23/14]

Here now, a look inside the Luchador Bar & Lounge, a tequila-and-small-plates spot that opened a few weeks ago inside the former Trebol space. The six-year-old Trebol quietly shuttered at the end of 2013, but its founder Kenny Hill (famously a Higgins alum) is on-board with the new project, opening the bar with co-owner Justin King.

The space has received a luchador-leaning revamp — with several wrestling masks dotting the walls — and crucially, the spot's popular outdoor patio remains. But in lieu of Trebol's Oaxaca-inspired entrees, Luchador's menu offers several appetizers and "platos a la carta" ranging from $4-10. Several borrow from Yucatan classics: sikil pak pumpkin seed dip, conchinita pibil (shredded pork in a banana leaf), and chicken with Yucatan black mole, served with coconut rice. (Other small plates — featuring options like tamales, tacos, and a kale salad with spiced beets and fried garlic — might look more familiar.) All can be paired with a cocktail list that boasts nine different margaritas, a half-dozen classic drinks, and tequila flights and/or pours (including house-made tequila infusions). Luchador is open now.

How Get Huge on Tumblr Twitter: Ignore Copyright and Creative Credit

@HistoryInPics may be the duo’s biggest creation. In the last three months, this account, which tweets photographs of the past with one-line descriptions, has added more than 500,000 followers to bring their total to 890,000 followers. (The account was only established in July of 2013.) If the trend line continues, they’ll hit a million followers next month.

The new account has gained this massive following without the official help of Twitter, which often sticks celebrity and media accounts on its recommended-follow list, inflating their numbers.

Facebook, Twitter, and (especially) Pinterest all benefit from people sharing copyrighted images. Visual content—none of which the companies create themselves—drive almost all social media sites. And they pay for none of it.

It might be easy to get mad at Di Petta and Cameron over how they’re using Twitter to build such huge, dedicated audiences, but the people who are really profiting from the profusion of copyrighted image sharing are the big social networks, two of which are now publicly traded companies, and another with a private multi-billion dollar valuation. Who really deserves the scorn—the two best players in the game or the people who own the stadium?

David Diehl announces retirement after 11 seasons with New York Giants

by Louis Bien
firehose

serbian tattoo beat

The do-everything offensive lineman eaves the Giants as one of the most prolific and versatile players in franchise history.

Veteran offensive lineman David Diehl announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday after playing 11 seasons with the New York Giants. Diehl started 16 games as a rookie in 2003, and played every season since. He manned every position along the line except center in front of nine different quarterbacks, though none more often than Eli Manning. Manning was Diehl's quarterback in 141 of 164 career appearances.

Diehl's appearances ties him with Phil Simms for the 12th-most in Giants history. Diehl accumulated 160 starts over his career, and for his efforts earned two Super Bowl Championship rings and a nod to the 2009 Pro Bowl.

Big Blue View on Diehl

SB Nation's Giants blog takes a look back at Diehl's career, which spanned two Super Bowl titles in New York.

Diehl said that his retirement was motivated, in part, by a desire to spend more time with his daughter, Addison, though she had encouraged him to keep playing when he considered hanging his cleats before the 2013 season:

"I love football," Diehl said. "I love being in the game, I love watching film, I love doing all of that and I'm going to miss that aspect of it. But I know I'm ready to start the new and next chapter of my life. I'm ready to not only be a bigger part of my daughter's life, but I'm ready to spread my knowledge and help other people with the game and continue to do stuff throughout our community and charity work and be involved with the New York Giants in any way possible.

"I've accomplished everything I could possibly dream of as a football player. If in 2003, anyone would have said that Dave Diehl, a fifth-round draft pick out of Illinois, would win two Super Bowls, play in the Pro Bowl and win every single Giant award possible, people would have said you're crazy. I have a lot to be proud of."

Diehl is the only Giants player who joined the team before Manning and head coach Tom Coughlin. He wasn't able to stay on the field often during his final seasons in the NFL due to injuries, however. He started 120 straight regular season games to begin his career before suffering a torn hamstring and partially dislocated hip in 2010. Diehl started 16 games the next season, but then made just 24 appearances over the course of 2011 and 2012.

The Giants had to make due without Diehl several times this season, though there's no question that the absence of his versatility will be difficult to replace going forward, not to mention the outsized personality and leadership he brought to the New York locker room.
