Will e-cigarettes help Big Tobacco become Big Marijuana, too?

by John McDuling
Versatile, very versatile.

Altria, the company behind Marlboro, deepened its push into the market for electronic cigarettes this week when its Nu-Mark subsidiary paid $110 million to buy e-vapor manufacturer, Green Smoke. But the acquisition could be less about Altria’s tobacco business than the burgeoning business of pot.

Florida-based Green Smoke has been making a range of e-cigarette products for the past five years. But the company’s choice of name and logo and the mountainous imagery on its website seem to suggest a subtle move into pot, especially given the rapid legalization of marijuana in US states and various other countries.

Green smoke

For its part, Altria is distancing itself from weed. “While I recognize that the topic of e-cigs being used for marijuana consumption is a topic that has been discussed in the media, marijuana remains illegal under federal law and Altria’s companies have no plans to sell marijuana-based products,” a spokesman for the company told Quartz.

Last week, a satirical report that a Marlboro-branded marijuana cigarette was being sold in Colorado triggered serious debate about big tobacco’s interest in the weed industry. There have already been numerous reports about e-cigarettes being used to consume cannabis in various forms. It’s not clear whether Green Smoke products can be used for such purposes. This YouTube post, which does not appear to be linked to the company, suggests they can be used to cease smoking cannabis, similar to their function with tobacco.

One e-cigarette entrepreneur who declined to be named told Quartz that use of e-cigarettes for marijuana is an open secret in the industry, and that tobacco companies are eager to capitalize on the trend. “The whole marijuana angle is going to be very interesting, who gets involved and how quickly,” this person said. “All the big tobacco companies are looking into it. It’s potentially going to be a huge play and a huge expansion.” The entrepreneur added that the company was recently approached by a medicinal marijuana company about partnering to use its vaping technology.

Newswire: Childish Gambino just recorded a pretty excellent P.M. Dawn cover

by Marah Eakin
firehose

well, damn

BBC Radio 1 has convinced all sorts of artists to cover tracks for its Live Lounge video series. Haim took on Miley Cyrus, Angel Haze did Beyoncé, and now Donald Glover has taken his turn. The former Community star known as Childish Gambino turned in a solid cover of P.M. Dawn’s 1992 hit “I’d Die Without You.” It’s so good, in fact, it kind of makes you wonder why Glover—if he's off TV comedy now—doesn't pursue more of a straight R&B sound instead of hip-hop. But as always with Glover, the heart wants what the heart wants, we guess.

Gambino's latest record, Because The Internet, is out now.

Newswire: VH1 is making a sequel to Drumline

attn: OMGKW

'A New Beat will take place at a fictional New Orleans university and tell the story of Dani Bolton, “an upper-class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend a college in Louisiana so she can join—and revitalize—their once-prominent drumline' because the only thing that can save Louisiana is upper-class New Yorkers who can go fuck themselves and eat shit

Responding to the demands of primarily Nick Cannon, VH1 is rebooting Drumline. Nick Cannon will executive produce and co-star in Drumline: A New Beat, a sequel to the 2002 original that put him on the movie map. A New Beat will take place at a fictional New Orleans university and tell the story of Dani Bolton, “an upper-class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend a college in Louisiana so she can join—and revitalize—their once-prominent drumline.” The character’s attempt to become the first female drumline section leader will be thwarted by both upperclassmen and, since she’s a woman, her romantic feelings for a fellow member. There’s no word on who Cannon will play, but let’s just assume it’ll be some sort of coach or something.

VH1’s Susan Levinson said the network is “excited to revisit that Drumline magic,” and ...

Seahawks Super Bowl parade: Crowd estimated at 700,000, larger than Seattle population

by Louis Bien
firehose

New Orleans' parade would have been larger if the entire city wasn't gridlocked for 18 hours and half of the people who left for the city 12 hours in advance couldn't get into the city until after the parade was over

There are more people lining the streets of Seattle for the Seahawks' Super Bowl parade than actually living in the city. This statistical anomaly is called "love."

Apparently there are more Seahawks fans in Seattle than actual people. A reported 700,000 fans have showed up to watch the team's Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday, which is greater than Seattle's estimated population of a 634,000 people.

That's a sizable crowd, even compared to previous Super Bowl parades. Baltimore turned out a relatively paltry 200,000 people to watch the Ravens' parade last year. Prior to that, the New York Giants produced a crowd between estimated between 500,000 and 1 million fans, albeit in a city with a population of 8.3 million people.

The bigger crowd may be a West Coast thing. The San Francisco Giants were reportedly able to pull 1 million revelers for their downtown World Series parade in 2012. No mention of what methods were used to estimate the size of the respective throngs, however. There may have been some generous guesswork involved.

Google's head of advertising will now run YouTube

by Casey Newton
firehose

grrrrrreeeeaaaaaaaat

Google said today that Susan Wojcicki, an early employee who has been serving as a senior vice president overseeing advertising and commerce, will now run YouTube. Salar Kamangar, who has run the video service since 2010, will stay at Google working on unspecified "early-stage projects," according to Re/code. As Re/code noted earlier, the move puts a prominent advertising executive at YouTube in the wake of publishers on the service complaining about the difficulties they have making profits on the site.

In a statement sent to Re/Code, Google CEO Larry Page was vague on what the change might mean for YouTube. "Salar and the whole YouTube team have built something amazing," Page wrote. "YouTube is a billion person global community curating videos for every possibility. Anyone uploading their creative content can reach the whole world and even make money. Like Salar, Susan has a healthy disregard for the impossible and is excited about improving YouTube in ways that people will love."

Wojcicki is employee No. 16 at Google, and in 1998 she housed the young startup in her garage as it built its search engine. Wojcicki is the sister of 23AndMe CEO Anne Wojcicki, who is also the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin. (The couple began living apart last summer.)

[Nostalgia] So I was searching through my old stuff last night...

feelies beat

Basically, I have a big pile of stuff I haven't looked at in years (because I'm bad about not throwing things away). I was looking for some old CCG collections of mine (old-school Rage), but instead, I came across...well, this stuff.

Spoiler: Manual bonanza part 1: Action games

The newspaper insert from Deus Ex:

And, amusingly, this poster:

Spoiler: Part 2: RPGs

Spoiler: Part 3: Adventure!

Spoiler: Part 4: Strategy

And finally...

Spoiler: Part 5: Flight/Space Sims

Those are the highlights; I did leave out a lot of the reference cards, plus some miscellaneous games that were extra obscure (like Tegel's Mercenaries and Strike Squad). Also, I left out Chaos Overlords for some reason, and I genuinely like that game, weird and flawed as it is.

I know this isn't all that surprising; after all, I'm sure a lot of people here hoard that kind of stuff and have a bunch of old game materials squirreled away somewhere. Still, it was sort of a (pleasant) surprise to stumble across all of that stuff, most of it in not-terrible shape.

It also made me realize that, even though I don't miss the waste and added printing expenses, I DO miss elaborate boxed copies of PC games, with all of their weird maps and in-universe inserts (and that I am old).

Newegg’s answer to Amazon Prime: $50 per year for expedited shipping

by Cyrus Farivar

If you’re the type of person who makes electronics purchases on a whim but then agonizes over which shipping to choose, you may be happy to hear about Newegg Premier.

Taking a page out of Amazon’s playbook, the venerable electronics retailer launched its “Newegg Premier” program on Tuesday. For $50 per year, subscribers will get “free expedited shipping” of three days or less, early-access to sales, free and no-fee returns, and a “dedicated customer service telephone number” (all similar benefits to Amazon Prime). But unlike its competitor, Newegg Premier won’t give you access to Alpha House (sorry, John Goodman) or any of the company's other online media.

"We always seek ways to improve the customer experience, and implementing a benefit program is the latest example of how we're making it easier and more rewarding to shop at Newegg.com," said Soren Mills, chief marketing officer of Newegg North America, in a statement. "Free expedited shipping is in itself a great benefit, but beyond that we're including many other perks to enhance the shopping experience."

The Pinball Arcade developer is designing original tables

by Alexa Ray Corriea
firehose

'video games could be a low-cost way to test out tables' popularity, with the more successful tables being adapted into physical machines.'

FarSight Studios, developer behind The Pinball Arcade, is currently working on designing and bringing to life its own original pinball tables, reports BBC.

According to FarSight vice president of product development Bobby King, the company is planning to produce its own tables and has been in talks with "some of the famous pinball designers from the past." King noted that video games could be a low-cost way to test out tables' popularity, with the more successful tables being adapted into physical machines.

"Those cost considerations [of the past] are irrelevant when machines are designed only to be built in the virtual world, so imagine what these guys could do if they were given carte blanche," King said. "If we made a digital table and it sold a million copies and it was feasible to build it in the real world, then I think that design would have to be of interest to a manufacturer like Stern [Pinball]."

California-based FarSight Studios has purchased the licenses to dozens of pinball tables created by two companies, Williams and Gottlieb. The digital re-creations of these tables are included in the company's Pinball Arcade suite, currently available on consoles, mobile devices, Mac and Windows PCs, as well on PlayStation Vita and Ouya. King said it "made sense" to reproduce these classic tables, and as a result a wider audience is being exposed to them.

"We are introducing classic pinball tables to people who would otherwise never get an opportunity to play them, and we are also preserving these machines and their culture," King said.

Evernote's New Naturalish Language Search [Link]

The latest update to Evernote for Mac adds some new query syntax to make searching faster.

"Recipes with photos tagged vegetarian"

That's pretty nice. Natural language search is great when it works but you must know the rules. It looks like Evernote provides a lot of modifier syntax so it should be pretty flexible. For example, by exposing the source attribute you can create a query like Notes from email to only show results that were emailed into Evernote. Neat.

Newswire: Pussy Riot talked Putin, prison, and politics on last night's Colbert Report

by Marah Eakin

After spending the past two years in prison, Pussy Riot members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina are now doing the U.S. publicity circuit. The duo is in the country to tour our prisons and talk with human rights activists, leading up to tonight's appearance at an Amnesty International benefit in New York.

Luckily for the non-incarcerated and/or benefit-going masses, the duo (accompanied by a translator) also popped up on last night’s episode of The Colbert Report. And as anyone who has watched the excellent documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer might have guessed, the results were downright charming, with the soft-spoken Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina going barb for barb with Colbert. The duo told the host they’d been arrested for “[singing] a fun song in a church,” and after Colbert threatened to search them on the way out of the studio, quipped they’d “had two ...

Aimee Mann is suddenly everywhere

Aimee Mann, David Wain, and Dave Foley have teamed up for a funny new video for charity. “I’m Cured” depicts Mann as a puffy-headed version of the common cold who’s struck down with heartache and loss after Wain’s character, a scientists, finds a cure for her existence and wins a “major science award.” It’s cute, weird, and funny, but that’s to be expected when you deal with anything made by Wain and Mann.

“I’m Cured” is available for digital download now, both as a single song and as a music video. Proceeds from the sale of the track go to OneKid OneWorld, an international organization that uses micro-loans to try and make a difference in the lives of impoverished children.

Joining Microsoft, eBay’s sensitive e-mail is intercepted by hackers

by Dan Goodin
This e-mail, purportedly sent by a security incident handler for eBay, was posted by members of a pro-Syrian hacker group. It has since been removed from Twitter.

Pro-Syrian hackers have produced evidence that they intercepted the sensitive communications of eBay security personnel as the employees responded to a recent hack of the company's UK websites. The incident underscores the lack of success some of the world's most powerful tech companies have withstanding everyday attacks.

An image posted over the weekend shows an e-mail purportedly sent by Paul Whitted, whose LinkedIn profile lists him as a senior manager at eBay overseeing "incident management and resolution of major site issues." The February 1 message addresses other eBay employees and raises the possibility that one or more of their computers—or at least one of their e-mail accounts—was compromised as they were discussing a hack last Saturday on eBay and PayPal websites.

Two pups befriend an abandoned hippo at the refuge that saved him [12 pictures]

Last year, workers at Conservation Lower Zambezi discovered a 2-week-old hippo that had been abandoned by his mother. They flew him to Chipembele Wildlife Rescue where he was dubbed Douglas and is now being raised until he is able, ideally, to take care of himself in the wild with other hippos.

In the meantime, his constant companions at Chipembele are terriers Molly and Coco. Despite their increasing difference in size as Douglas grows to thousands of pounds, the three animals seem to best of friends…

Apple’s admitting the “cheap” iPhone 5c failed by bringing back the iPhone 4

by Leo Mirani
Neither cheap nor cheerful.

Would you pay $320 for a four-year-old smartphone? Apple seems to believe that aspiring consumers in emerging markets will. The company has reportedly restarted manufacturing the iPhone 4, which it discontinued with the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c models late last year. So says the Economic Times, an Indian business newspaper, which cites “three senior executives with direct knowledge of the company’s plan.” Apple will sell the iPhone 4 only in India, Indonesia and Brazil, according to the report.

Selling smartphones in emerging markets is a tricky proposition. Many of these markets don’t have the system of one- or two-year contracts that subsidize handsets common in the West; people pay full price for a phone upfront. Moreover, consumers want cheap phones but also want cachet. Companies have a hard time finding a balance between the two. Apple tried offering 0% interest financing and buy-back schemes, allowing it to retain a high sticker price (for the cachet) while in practice selling phones at a discount. Indeed, the company kept its price steady in India despite a massive fall in the value of the rupee late last year, effectively accepting lower margins.

The iPhone 5c was meant to solve this problem. Offer people a brand new device at the same price as older models and they should in theory snap it up. Instead, the exact opposite happened: Consumers across the world—not just in developing countries—saw the “cheap” iPhone 5c as simultaneously too expensive and insufficiently exclusive. They rushed to buy the more expensive iPhone 5s instead, catching Apple by surprise and causing supply problems.

The limits of a brand

All of which explains why Apple would be willing to do something as out of character as to bring back an older model. Indians will buy some 225 million smartphones in 2014, according to a recent forecast, 92% of which will be to first-time buyers. Brazil and Indonesia will between them buy nearly 100m smartphones. Many of these new customers will know and admire Apple, and a phone priced at Rs 20,000 ($320) might be just the thing to turn them into Apple loyalists for their long lives as consumers of phones and apps.

Or it might not. These consumers also have a wealth of options, including new, much cheaper devices from Samsung and LG, many local manufacturers selling cheap phones with all the bells and whistles, and new entrants such as HP. Moreover, older iPhones tend not to react very well to iOS 7, the latest version of the company’s smartphone operating system. That means the phones will either work badly or run on the very different-looking iOS 6, emphasizing how old they are. Either way, consumers in India, Brazil and Indonesia will have to make a choice between a four-year-old phone from Apple and a powerful new one from a less desirable brand. It will be a test of Apple’s marketing prowess.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
