Feds drop most charges against former Anon spokesman

by Joe Mullin
Barrett Brown made a three-part video series about "why I'm angry with the FBI," and was arrested hours later.

Barrett Brown, a self-proclaimed spokesperson for the hacking group Anonymous, was arrested in 2012 and has criminal trials scheduled for later this year. The charges against Brown stemmed from when he posted a hyperlink from one Internet relay chat channel, called #Anonops, to another channel under his control, called #ProjectPM.

Federal prosecutors filed papers today indicating that they want to drop all but one of the 12 charges in their original indictment, including all the counts related to hyperlinking. Brown no longer faces 10 charges of "aggravated identity theft," but he is left to deal with a charge of possessing stolen credit card numbers.

The government's backing down comes a day after Brown's defense lawyers filed a motion to dismiss all the charges against him. Brown's lawyers say that all he did was post a hyperlink, which can't amount to the "transfer" of stolen information. The charges against him violate First Amendment free speech protections, the motion argues.

Frozen‘s Jennifer Lee Becomes First Female Director to Helm a Billion-Dollar Film

When Frozen topped the billion-dollar mark at the global box office last weekend, the significance wasn't just that Disney execs are going to be snapping up the world's stock of private islands when Christmas bonus time rolls around this year. Nope. Frozen is now the first film to make a billion dollars... that was also directed by a woman.

This was the Mardi Gras of Rob Ryan

by Rodger Sherman

McDonald's eating Norse god looking motherfucker

Rob Ryan and an army of impostor Rob Ryans were in full display at Mardi Gras.

Tuesday was Mardi Gras, the No. 1 day for drinking in New Orleans. In Rob Ryan's first year as the Saints' defensive coordinator, we found out that he quite enjoys drinking in New Orleans. Therefore, this was the Mardi Gras of Rob Ryan.

The results were terrifying.

For starters, one Krewe -- a group charged with putting together a parade -- the Krewe of Argus, decided to have Ryan as their grand marshal.

It was rainy, and Ryan's majestic hair became wet:

Another, the Krewe D'Etat, whose parade was on Friday night, decided to have a cavalcade of Rob Ryans descend on the streets:

Chaos.

I can think of few things scarier than an army of Rob Ryans, pillaging and consuming all the beer in the land.

Ryan was also on things thrown into the crowd, like coins:

Oregon Withholding $25.6M From Oracle Over Health Website Woes

by Soulskill
itwbennett writes "Oregon is holding back $25.6 million in payments from Oracle (out of some $69.5 million Oracle claims it is owed) over work the vendor did on the state's troubled health care exchange website. The site was supposed to go live on Oct. 1 but its launch has been marred by a slew of bugs and it is not yet fully functional. This week, Cover Oregon said it had reached an agreement with Oracle laying out 'an orderly transition of technology development services, and protects current and future Cover Oregon enrollees,' according to a statement. Oregon officials reached the deal with Oracle after the company reportedly threatened to pull all of its workers off the project and essentially walk away."

Hear This: The Meters remain the measure of New Orleans funk

by Jason Heller

In Hear ThisA.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well—some inspired by a weekly theme and some not, but always songs worth hearing. This week, in celebration of Mardi Gras, we’re picking songs we think could soundtrack our personal parades.

In the same way Booker T. & The M.G.’s embodied the sound of Memphis soul in the ’60s, the funkier, gumbo-fueled The Meters define New Orleans R&B. And it all came together in 1969 with “Cissy Strut.” One of the band’s first singles—and the opening track of its self-titled debut album—“Cissy Strut” is an instrumental for the ages. And one that’s quintessentially New Orleans, right down to its bones. From Ziggy Modeliste’s popping percussion to Art Neville’s saucy keyboard vamps, the song’s pieces lock together like hooky, euphoric clockwork.

This is the soundtrack to ...

Ads have displaced porn as the top source for malware on your mobile phone

by Leo Mirani
He'd better not be looking at an ad.

“Avoid clicking on ads on your mobile device.” That’s the ”best practice” suggested by Blue Coat, an online security company, in its latest report on mobile malware (registration required), or malicious software. The report found that thing most often leading mobile users down the path to malware has ceased to be pornography and is now advertising.

Here’s how it works: Attackers use legitimate ad networks to place ads telling a mobile user he has a virus on his phone. Clicking on the “OK” on the ad pops up a fake system warning prompting the user to remove the virus. He is then directed to download an “anti-virus app“—in the process getting him to change his settings to allow third-party downloads along the way—which is actually designed to steal personal information or install dodgy software. Blue Coat found that malicious ads accounted for one-fifth of all attacks on smartphones in Feb. 2014, up 400% since Nov. 2012. Porn, by contrast, fell to 16% of all attacks.

Still, mobile remains a far safer environment than Windows PCs. Attacks from mobile ads rely on a user’s gullibility and willingness to go along with the prompts. Part of the reason smartphones haven’t been subject to the kind of passive infections common on PCs—where just visiting the wrong website can give hackers an entry point, even if the user doesn’t download anything—is because the tools to do so aren’t easily or widely available. Criminals trying to infect smartphones must put some effort into it.

In comparative terms, therefore, attacks through ads on mobile are fairly infrequent. They are a fifth of all attacks, where ads take up a tenth of all mobile traffic. By contrast, porn accounts for just 1% of mobile traffic but is the source of about 16% of all attacks, because people can more easily be fooled into clicking malicious links. (An example of the sort of tricks employed by peddlers of porn can be found here.) Smartphone users would do well to pay more attention to Blue Coat’s other recommendation: “Avoid pornography on your mobile devices.”

17 Fantastic Completed Webcomics to Binge-Read from Beginning to End

One of the risks in following a new webcomic is that the story might never end. You might end up with a comic that goes on for years only to have the creator abandon it. But there are some great webcomics out there that have wrapped up their storylines instead of fading into oblivion, leaving hundreds—and sometimes thousands—of pages for us to enjoy.

Newswire: A Game Of Thrones hip-hop mix-tape is coming

by Marah Eakin

HBO has enlisted Big Boi, Wale, Common, Daddy Yankee, and more to come together on a Game Of Thrones-themed mixtape. Legend of the project’s existence has been bubbling under for a while, but now there’s some hard information about the tape’s contents floating around. Catch The Throne is expected to hit the Internet on Friday, and it will feature 10 hip-hop and Latin music artists rapping about the fantasy series over the show’s orchestral score and samples of dialogue.

Produced by HBO, the tape was certainly a giant financial undertaking, but the network believes it will pay off in terms of promotion. Lucinda Martinez, HBO’s SVP of multicultural marketing, tells the Wall Street Journal that the network hopes to use the tape to reach out to the show’s “urban, multicultural audience,” ideally bringing more of that demographic into the channel’s subscriber base ...

Great Job, Internet!: Who’s True Detective’s Yellow King? Probably the yellow guy in a crown

by Erik Adams

The search for True Detective’s Yellow King threatens to inspire Rust Cohle-like obsessiveness in even the most casual of the HBO series’ fans. Theories about the ritualistic killer abound, but if the video below is any indication, a group of Onion-associated comics may have finally cracked the case. It’s the “detective’s curse,” as Marty Hart (whom we can now definitively say is not The Yellow King) might say. The solution has always been under your nose, but for some reason you weren’t paying attention to it because it was painted yellow, holding a scepter, and wearing a king’s hat.

Uncharted writer Amy Hennig no longer at Naughty Dog

by Sinan Kubba
firehose

'Hennig served as the creative director for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and she also penned the script for the three games. She was understood to be reprising her role for the Uncharted PS4 game.

Neither Hennig nor Naughty Dog have commented, but IGN sources claim the writer, a Naughty Dog veteran of more than ten years, was "forced out" by The Last of Us directors Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley, and the pair may take over the Uncharted series. Hennig worked with Druckman and Straley on the first two Uncharted games, before the two men switched to developing The Last of Us.'

Constantine Co-Creator is Less Than Pleased with DC About A Certain Element of NBC’s TV Show

firehose

'The fact that we wouldn’t necessarily expect a giant corporation like DC to open a line of communication with Bissette—hell, just send him a quick e-mail or Facebook message—doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to expect them to do that. Because it’s decent, but also because it makes good business sense: Ignoring one of the co-creators (and, I’m guessing, the others) of a series with a huge cult following at a time when you’re doing a TV show that fans aren’t necessarily all that sold on is a really stupid PR move. If you reach out to Bissette and tell him about the show and his response is a public “They’re ruining Constantine!,” well… he probably would’ve said that anyway. If you have the chance to get the co-creators on board and talk to the hardcore fans about how the show might not suck, you take it. You at least don’t ignore Bissette like he’s not important.

DC Fumbles How They Deal With Fans and Creators Number… what is this? Are we in the thousands yet?'

Artist Stephen Bissette's open letter to DC doesn't express anger that NBC's Constantine exists, or anger about a specific way they're interpreting the character that he, as one of the character's original creators, might be privy to when we plebes are not. Rather, DC hasn't seen fit to communicate with Bissette about the show at all. And he's pissed.
