Cute Otter Approaches Two People and Plays Around Like a Dog

by Justin Page

I don’t know if he just bit me or something… Ow…

A cute otter approaches a man and a woman on the side of the road and begins playing around like a dog. The otter runs around the lady’s legs, rolls over, and even manages to give her a playful bite on the leg.

Instagram Bringing Ads to Users’ Feeds

by Patrick Mallory

instagram bringing ads to users feeds 1 Instagram Bringing Ads to Users Feeds

C’mom, guys, we all knew it was just a matter of time before our Instagram feeds showcasing our friends’ meals, wedding photos, new buys, and general amateur photography wasn’t going to stay blissfully ad-free forever. Well, here’s the news then: Instagram announced on Wednesday that they will begin delivering ads to user’s feeds over the next couple of months as a way to grow its revenues, building on the platform that owner Facebook has already built. They’ll do their best – so they claim – to make sure that any ads you see will flow and fit in with the shots and videos you already have, much like those found in magazines. One feature that will at least give us a bit of satisfaction is that users will be able to block ads they don’t like and they will be even be able to give Instagram feedback on the ads that show or even declare a preference for type. So, it’s still a kick to you-know-where, but at least they let you tell them how much it hurts.

Japanese Gadget Brings the Smell of Grilled Meat to Smartphones

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Menu

The Hana Yakiniku (translated as “Nose Grilled Meat”) by Japanese company Scentee brings the smell of grilling short ribs, beef tongue, and buttered potatoes to your smartphone. The kit includes a small white scent-filled device that plugs into your phone’s jack. By using a special Scentee app, you choose the scent you want, plug the device into your phone and then catch a savory whiff of meat. The promo video says that the fourth step is to eat (in this case plain white rice). The video suggests that it is a substitute for eating the real thing and says, for example, that if you are a starving college student and can’t afford expensive food, you could just smell the fake meat, eat plain white rice, and be satisfied. The Hana Yakiniku will be available November 15, 2013. Other scented cartridges, like coffee, corn soup, and the like, are available now.

Air Jordan 5 – “Bel-Air” | Release Reminder

by Patrick Mallory

air jordan 5 retro bel air release reminder 00 Air Jordan 5 Bel Air | Release Reminder

If it wasn’t for its wild, neon-marked appearance and the nostalgia it congers up of those good ol’ days when the Fresh Prince graced out TV screens (in those almost unbelievable pre-DVR days), we’d probably be tired of seeing this model on our pages. But, we aren’t. So here it is again, this time as a reminder of its release, beginning tomorrow. The only problem with that is the fact that the “Bel-Air” Air Jordan 5 Retro is going to be highly sought-after, with the select shops getting pairs having to resort, in some cases, to issuing raffle tickets to all interested in copping, as is Renarts is doing. If you visit their shop between 10am today, October 4 and 6pm, you’ll be issued one for the chance to come in and purchase a pair on Saturday morning. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Little Fanboy Costume

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Fanboy

Deirdre Wingell made this “fanboy” Halloween costume for her then 4-year-old son (he’s now 11) and told Neatorama that she was inspired to make it because “from the time he was an infant he was completely obsessed with fans.” Deirdre remembers that the costume “was the hit of the neighborhood ” and that it took about “two hours to trick or treat that year.” It even inspired folks to dole out full-sized candy bars for the little “fanboy.” You can learn how it was made at Neatorama.

Deadly African Salt Lake Turns Animals Into Ghostly Statues

by EDW Lynch

Animal statue photos by Nick Brandt

Calcified Caped Dove, Lake Natron, 2010

The unlucky animals in these photos died in Lake Natron, a salt lake in Tanzania that is so hot and alkaline that almost nothing can survive in it. The lake’s toxic chemistry hardened and preserved the animal’s bodies into ghoulish statues, which photographer Nick Brandt found scattered along the shoreline of the lake. He arranged the animals into the poses you see here. For more photos of African wildlife check out his photo gallery and photo book, Across the Ravaged Land.

Wheel Inn, Truck Stop and Diner Made Famous in ‘Pee-wee’s Big Adventure’ Closes Its Doors

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Wheel Inn

Bob Pratte of PE Bloggers is reporting that the Wheel Inn, the landmark truck stop and diner off of Interstate 10 in Cabazon, California made famous in the popular 1985 film Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, closed for good on Monday, September 23, 2013. The restaurant is next to the Cabazon dinosaurs, the roadside attraction of giant dinosaurs which was built in the 1960s to bring customers into the Wheel Inn. The dinosaurs are owned separately from the restaurant and will remain open as a creationist attraction.

Here is the scene from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure that features the Wheel Inn:

Vintage Pharmaceutical Cannabis Bottles

High Times recently featured pieces from the vintage pharmaceutical cannabis bottle collection of an “unofficial historian” in Mendocino County, California who “has made a hobby of collecting the detritus of an ancient cannabis industry that once spanned America.” His 19th century pharmaceutical bottles are said to “demonstrate that the United States once embraced the healing powers of cannabis freely.” See more of the collection at High Times.

Ross Hathaway is a natural athlete. Not only is the 11-year-old a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, he also can pull some rad move on his skateboard, including a clean landing from a Frontside 180. So it comes as a surprise that Hathaway is living with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder which affects the lungs. But don’t expect Hathaway to stay away from the dojo or his local skate park. The avid sportsman created a special Nike Zoom Stefan Janoski, matching AW77 Crew and Nike SB cap just so he can roll with members of the Nike SB Team. Finished with embroidered purple and blue accents on a black backdrop, all in reference to the crystals within Hathaway’s rock collection, the special Nike Zoom Stefan Janoski features an icy blue outsole with outlines of two lungs. Screen-print of a pixelated rose in 65 blocks lined the shoe’s interior, hint at “65 Roses,” an easier way for children to pronounce “cystic fibrosis,” along with numerous palm trees for Hathaway’s love of tropical places.

One of seven designs from the 2013 Nike Doernbecher Freestyle Program, the Nike x Doernbecher Freestyle – Zoom Stefan Janoski & AW77 Crew by Ross Hathaway will be available in the coming months, with all sale proceeds to benefit OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

This Guy's Eaten Nothing but Raw Meat for Five Years

by Julian Morgans

Meet Derek Nance. Five years ago, Derek had some mystery illness that killed his appetite and made him puke up everything he ate. The doctors suspected it was an allergy thing, so Derek changed his diet. First he cut the wheat and dairy, but he still continued losing weight. Getting desperate, he was soon online, chatting to people pushing all manner of lifesaving diets. Derek tried a Mediterranean diet (fish and vegetables) before ditching the fish and eventually becoming a vegan, but nothing worked. Finally, a guy who’d had similar symptoms recommended a carnivorous version of the Paleolithic diet. With nothing to lose, Derek gave raw meat a try. That was five years ago and he now goes so far as to brush his teeth with animal fat. For reasons I don’t properly understand I wanted to watch Derek eat a meal and he obliged. I found him with his girlfriend, Joanne, in Lexington, Kentucky, and we talked about vital organs, rotten meat, and health, which is the main point of this according to Derek. He’s never been healthier.

VICE: Hi, Derek. Can you tell me more about this diet? Whose idea was this?
Derek: So it was started by a dentist named Weston Price who in the 1930s studied the health benefits of eating more raw foods, including meats. He studied the Native Americans and a few of them who lived on a guts-and-grease diet. He found people in primitive communities were much healthier than we are today, and I thought, All right, I’ll give it a try.

Was there any deliberation?
Not really because I’d been sick for such a long time that I was willing to give anything a try. I had a couple of goats in my yard that I was using for milk, and, you know, I was tired of milking them, so I slaughtered them. I ate both of those goats, all raw, and just switched over like that.

Dear God. Did it make you sick?
No. Maybe what you get at first is a little diarrhea, but that’s just your digestive system adapting. After the first week, I felt absolutely great, and I never went back.

Derek’s dinner. Chunks of lamb and fat.

And you’ve eaten nothing else since?
Yeah, for nearly six years. I’m into lamb, mainly. It’s just easy to go out to farms, barter over a decent price, slaughter it, and throw it in the truck. It’s a lot harder to deal with beef because it’s a lot bigger. Pigs are kind of a no-no because they shoot them full of hormones and raise them on grains, which promote bacterial growth.

How do you avoid scurvy?
The organ meat of the animal actually contains vitamin C. And the thing about vitamin C is that you need more of it in a high-carbohydrate diet, but if you’re eating carnivorously, there’s enough in the animal flesh. So I just eat the organ meat and the connective tissue and everything else.

Derek’s hit of vitamin C. A jar of sheep organs and clotted blood.

What happens if you go to a friend’s house for dinner?
If I go to a friend’s house, most people will allow me to bring a little bit of my own food. Same with if I go out for dinner.

But don’t you get sick of eating the same thing all the time?
No. There’s something that happens during the adaption process. About three weeks in I noticed this real strong blood-like taste in the back of my throat and then all of a sudden I started getting strong cravings for it. The idea of cooked meat no longer appeals. It just tastes burned. And herbs and spices too, I used to season the meat, but seasonings no longer appeal either.

You also eat rotten meat. Why do you eat rotten meat?
It’s a probiotic. Half of the problem with my digestion was actually just lack of enzymes. My body just doesn’t produce enough enzymes to digest starchy foods. So the probiotic bacteria in rotten meat actually help me to digest the food.

Derek lets chunks of lamb rot in a jar before he eats them.

Have you ever explained your diet to a vegetarian?
Well, my girlfriend is a vegetarian.

Joanne, you’re a vegetarian?
Joanne: Yes. Well, more omnivore with vegan tendencies. I’ve tried Derek’s diet—we had lamb tenderloins once and they were delicious, but I’m a vegetarian for compassionate reasons.

Derek and Joanne.

So you guys talk about your difference in opinion?
Yeah and I understand his reasoning because for him this is his health. I think I can eat anything and it doesn’t affect me. That’s a big difference between us.

And Derek, you’re comfortable personally slaughtering animals?
Well if an animal lives in accordance with its nature, I have no problem ethically slaughtering that animal. But if you raise that animal in a pen, and when it’s sick just shoot it up with antibiotics, I have real problems with that. It’s not just unfair on the animal, it’s unfair on the people who eat it.

Your fridge looks like it belongs to Satan. What are we looking at here?
It’s a Shetland sheep. It’s got a very mild, sweet flavor. I crack open the skull and eat the brain. It’s kind of a delicacy, so I’ll wait until the weekend to get into it.

What’s the worst thing about this diet?
Being an outcast. My family thinks I’ve lost it. They literally think I’m off-the-deep-end insane and I don’t know why. Eating raw meat is just something they can’t accept. My father has a master's in biology and tells me that if I eat raw meat, I’ll get some sort of pathogen.
Joanne: Yeah, that’s weird. I’m not even allowed to mention Derrick’s diet around them. They say, “That’s wrong! He’ll die,” and they just get really emotional about it.

Will you ever stop this diet?
No, not by choice. If they haul me away, kicking and screaming, then maybe.

And you’ve recently become a butcher. Can you tell me about that?
Well, I was going out to farms for years slaughtering my own animals and one of the guys at these farms needed some help so I offered. Now I’m learning the trade from the ground up and I get lots of scraps to snack on. Before I was an electrician, but I’ll do anything. Joanne runs a vegan juice bar so sometimes I’ll help out there. That’s just life.
