by Rebecca Escamilla
Mrdesplaines

is it weak to think they should have made chewy have a lil bit of grey hairs?

It’s been months since the release of the first teaser for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and today Disney and Lucasfilm released the second official teaser for the film directed by J.J. Abrams. The goosebumps-inducing teaser–which includes a look at a crashed Star Destroyer–opens with a few haunting notes of composer John Williams‘ score and escalates into a fanfare of epic proportions.

Harrison Ford returns as Han Solo along with Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca in the teaser, with Solo announcing that he and Chewie “are home.”

The teaser’s release coincides with the opening of the Star Wars Celebration at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The film is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2015.

What’s a Skateboard with legs called?

by Radhika Seth

A Table! The joke may be bad, but the idea isn’t. Here’s a set of tables made out of skateboards. Designed with two perspectives, the tables come in a cabin-esque wooden and a contemporary steel selection. Somehow the transition from a sporty, movable object to a stationary piece of furniture comes very naturally to the skateboard’s form. Hashtag Awesome!

My Retro Game Box, A Monthly Subscription Service for Receiving Random Retro Video Games

by Rollin Bishop

Retro Game Box

My Retro Game Box is a monthly subscription service by Katy and Stu in Scotland that sends out a random assortment of retro video games to subscribers. Games are chosen based on cost and which consoles subscribers have, but the process is a little more complicated than that.

We have developed a system with full, emotional artificial intelligence, and named it Katy.* She will strike up a conversation with you via email after you subscribe, to find out what consoles you have, what games you already have in your collection, and what kind of games you detest. We want you to help us make good choices for you, but we draw the line at giving us a wish-list, otherwise it just isn’t a surprise.

Beautiful 3D Lighting Sculptures Made From Engraved Acrylic Slides and Illuminated by LED Lights

by Lori Dorn

Crystal Ball
Crystal Ball

Vancouver-based Blue Pine Studio has created wonderful 3D-illusion light sculptures made from engraved acrylic slides and illuminated by LED lights. The sculptures come in an array various eye-catching designs that use 16 different colors and 4 different lighting modes, all of which can be controlled with an included remote.

The lighting part is made of clear acrylic, known for its excellent light transmission properties. Where the acrylic piece is engraved light shines through. The approximate overall dimensions of the lighting piece are 150x160mm (exact dimensions depend on the selected design). The lighting base is made of two parts: the lower part is made of solid pine and the upper part is made of plywood. Both parts are machined with CNC milling machine then sanded and finally coated with a clear coating. All the works involved in this project including design of 3D forms, engraving of the acrylic piece, machining of the lamp base, sanding, coating, and assembly are done by Blue Pine Studio in North Vancouver.

The project was successfully funded through Kickstarter in September 2014 and now three of the most popular designs, “Crystal Ball,” “Buckeye Butterfly,” and “Octopus,” are currently available in the Laughing Squid Store for a limited time.

Major DC x Reebok Ventilator

by Greg Vernick
Mrdesplaines

hummm.... where have we seen this color combo before???

major-dc-x-reebok-ventilator-00

In March of 1912, Tokyo presented Washington DC with a gift of Japanese cherry trees as a token of the blossoming friendship between the US and Japan. Each year the blossoming of these trees is celebrated during the Cherry Blossom festival. Major DC, a sneaker staple in Washington DC since its inception in 2006, has used this annual event as inspiration for their collaboration on the Reebok Ventilator. Sporting a Spring Cherry (coral) toe box with a reflective Sakura floral print along with a contrasting dark grey suede rear, the quality and depth of the details on these are a trivute to Duk-Ki Yu, the creative director and founder of Major. From the images of the cherry blossom trees taken from 1960s posters for the festival, to the Major branding on the heels and aglets, these are an outstanding celebration of both the Cherry Blossom festival and the 25th anniversary of the Reebok Ventilator. You can preorder your pair now from Major, or look for them to drop later in the month.

Augmented Reality Sandbox, A Map That Uses a Microsoft Kinect to Let Users Shape Its Topography

by Brian Heater

Christoper Young captured some video of the Augmented Reality Sandbox, a project created by the UC Davis Department of Geology that utilizes a Microsoft Kinect to created a real-time interactive augmented reality map projected on a literal sandbox–which users can manipulate by moving around piles of sand.

The goal of this project was to develop a real-time integrated augmented reality system to physically create topography models which are then scanned into a computer in real time, and used as background for a variety of graphics effects and simulations. The final product is supposed to be self-contained to the point where it can be used as a hands-on exhibit in science museums with little supervision.

The Sandbox was inspired by video of a similar project created by Czech researchers.

Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015), Beloved Actor, Singer, Poet, and Photographer Best Known as Spock on ‘Star Trek’

Leonard Nimoy 2011

Leonard Nimoy, the beloved film director, poet, singer, photographer, and most recognizably, actor from the original Star Trek series and subsequent film, television, and video game sequels as the ever-logical Mr. Spock, passed away at his Bel Air, California home from complications of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy had previously attributed the disease to a smoking habit that he quit over 30 years ago. He was 83 years old.

Nimoy’s granddaughter Dani has made the following statement about her late grandfather:

Hi all, as you all know, my Grandpa passed away this morning at 8:40 from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was an extraordinary man, husband, grandfather, brother, actor, author-the list goes on- and friend. Thank you for the warm condolences. May you all LLAP. – Dani P.s. I will be putting special shirts up on our site, SHOPLLAP.com, where all of the proceeds will go to the COPD Foundation. I hope to hear from you all.

While Nimoy was most famous for his roles as Spock and as an IMF agent in the series Mission Impossible, he was also known for his sonorous voice, his eloquent way with words, and his beautiful photography, some of which is available for purchase. In a 2011 interview with Collector’s World, Nimoy had this to say about his photography:

I began making images at 13. I have used everything from a 1930’s Kodak bellows camera to a digital Hasselblad. The camera is only a tool. I don’t carry a camera. When i have a concept which intrigues me I get my cameras to find a way to explore that idea visually. I don’t bring a camera to a production set. I consider it an invasion of a serious workplace. Some of my greatest pleasures as an artist have been seeing an audience touched by a performance or enjoying a print of my work on a wall. It’s all about the creative process.

Massachusetts-based photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh captured some stunning imagery off the coast of Nantucket for Stay Wild Magazine, as a series of semi-frozen “Slurpee” waves rolled in. The stunningly slushy waves were the result of continued record-setting low temperatures in the Northeastern United States.

The harbor to the main land is frozen solid. No boats running. But yea, the day after I took these it actually froze up the shoreline for 200 yards out. Solid ice. I was totally tripping when I pulled up to the beach and saw this

geoff-mcfedtridge-paints-mini-countryman-01

As the official sponsor of the Burton European Open, MINI has invited a series of high-profile artists to leave their mark at the Swiss resort of LAAX during the running of the event. For the past five years, the highlight of the exhibition has been a the use of a MINI as a blank canvas for the invited artist, and for 2015, it was Geoff McFetridge who took a brush to a MINI Countryman. The L.A.-based artist left his signature style of contour line illustrations on the four-door, from “bonnet to boot.” Geoff also left his mark across the slopes with non-traditional “MINI in the Mountains” trail signage, alerting riders to snow conditions and where to find the nearest halfpipe, gondola or powder run.
