[Video] Witness the Return of Silver Shamrock in New ‘Halloween III’ Fan Film ‘Return of the Witch’!
Emahlstadtthis is the worst thing i've ever seen in my life.
Thirty six years ago, Daniel Challis saved the world. This year, Silver Shamrock is back.
It’s pretty awesome to see that Halloween III: Season of the Witch has finally been embraced by fans for what it is rather than derided for what it’s not, and it took many, many years to get to this point. For years, Halloween III was the bastard child of the franchise, a Michael Myers-less sequel that simply did not fit within the mold of the series… to say the least.
As its own movie, of course, Halloween III is a total gem, one that has amassed such a large following that sites like this one don’t even need to defend it anymore. It’s no longer “underrated” or “overlooked,” as it’s now so beloved that it’s even spawning… fan films?!
As you may recall, I wrote up my own Halloween III fan fiction here on BD back in 2016, with my short story “The Final October” serving as a direct sequel to the film. This year, filmmaker Brandon Tobatto similarly went ahead and made his own Halloween III sequel with the fan film Return of the Witch, a 26-minute short that picks up 36 years after the film.
Return of the Witch centers on the return of the nefarious Silver Shamrock as the re-branded Shamrock Unlimited, the brain-child of Conal Cochran’s grandson, Connor Cochran…
“After finally coming to terms with the fact that his family’s legacy has been forever tarnished by the events of Halloween 1982, Connor Cochran, grandson of Conal Cochran and heir to the ‘Silver Shamrock’ company, has decided to re-emerge from the shadows and rid the world of the stigma it has placed upon his family name. With this new ‘Shamrock Unlimited’ brand looming over the nation, will Connor Cochran right the wrongs of his grandfather… or FINISH what Conal Cochran started all those years ago?”
Like many fan films, Return of the Witch is no doubt an amateur effort, but man it’s just so cool to see that Halloween III is finally popular enough to be spawning its own fan projects such as this one. The concept behind the short is really cool, with Silver Shamrock’s original plan taken to an apocalyptic new level, and we certainly commend Tobatto and his team for their efforts.
Be sure to watch through the credits for a fun final treat!

As we pointed out in our review of the film earlier this week, Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake isn’t going to be for everyone. ‘Star Trek’ Animated Series Coming from Rick & Morty Writer
Emahlstadtyeah, i'm on board with this... until the awful fans ruin everything about it.
Yes, Star Trek does already have an animated series in it’s past, but it would appear that CBS All Access is moving forward with a new one.

Already picked up for two seasons, a half-hour animated comedy series called Star Trek: Lower Deck, which will reportedly will focus on the “support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships”.
CBS All Access Executive Vice President of Originals Julie McNamara offered this statement on the new series:
“We couldn’t have imagined a better creative team to work with on CBS All Access’ first original animated series than Mike McMahan, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Star Trek: Lower Deck is a fantastic complement to our growing lineup of original series and our ongoing expansion of the Star Trek universe on CBS All Access.”
The series is being developed my Rick & Morty writer Mike McMahan and Star Trek helmer for CBS Alex Kurtzman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurtzman will be executive producing alongside Secret Hideout’s Heather Kadin, Roddenberry Entertainment CEO Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Katie Krentz and McMahan.
Kurtzman said:
“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed. He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of Trek to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
There is no expected release date for Below Deck yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear anything.

Fallout 76 impressions: Bethesda’s latest is a slow starter, but signs of brilliance are there
Emahlstadtplayed the beta for the alloted four hours the other night. i was underwhelmed.
Fallout 76 is different, but at heart it still has that traditional Bethesda Game Studios design: it wants to be more than the sum of its parts.
Despite knowing exactly what kind of game modern Fallout is and exactly what type of online experience Bethesda was shooting for with Fallout 76, I didn’t quite know what to expect the first time I booted this new online experience. I’d read Kirk’s hands-on preview from Bethesda’s event, but I still couldn’t picture exactly how the traditional Bethesda Game Studios tropes would mesh with an always-online world.
After three hours, I think I have the beginnings of an answer: it works quite well, though there’s a weird, unfamiliar undercurrent that means the early hours of the game will probably end up being the most contentious and troublesome for steadfast fans of Bethesda’s tried-and-true formula.

It’s perhaps both a blessing and a curse to Fallout 76 that the opening moments of games in this series are thus far such a pre-defined, familiar experience. You wake up in a vault and after a whistle-stop tutorial tour of its facilities you’re spat out into a sprawling open world. 76 is much the same as the other games in this regard, but it’s also here that the game’s hands-off, player-driven approach to story is first demonstrated.
Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have always been rich with flavor text hidden away across the world – computer files to dig through, hand-written notes to scour – but now, in Fallout 76, this is the primary method of storytelling. This makes sense, obviously – with the game set pretty much as close as the series is ever likely to get to the immediate aftermath of the bombs dropping, there is no civilization to speak of and few NPCs to interact with. The largest theme of the game, in fact, is picking through the wreckage to build something new – the sort of settlements that the heroes of other Fallout games will later discover.
These changes ultimately mean this is a stripped back Fallout experience, with that paring back necessary to shoulder the big addition – other players and the associated complex open-world systems that come with them. It also means this is a game far more focused on combat, since many of the NPCs who you’d spend time chattering away to and romancing are absent. That’s an interesting decision, really, given that Fallout combat has never exactly been the greatest, and has always been part of a greater whole. Now, it’s the game’s very raison d’être, for better and for worse.
Obviously the early hours aren’t the best time for this, and that’s why I say they’ll likely be trying, the period when even some Fallout veterans could bounce right off 76. You’re running around with a machete or other generally weak weapons, smacking rats and mutated cows to gather materials. You’re looting and then heading back to camp where other low-level players compete for space on the crafting benches, which only allow one player to sit down at them at a time. It’s plodding, methodical and surprisingly directionless-feeling despite the heavily-layered early objectives – though that might also be the idea.
The sense of discovery of this new, freshly-radiated world is great. Picking up loot is cathartic, and from the very first moments out in the wasteland I can fully sense how satisfying it’s going to be over time to gather more materials and then craft better gear and impressive-looking settlements. All of this is given a greater weight in Fallout 76 thanks to its multiplayer nature, too: the better your gear the more bad-ass you’re going to look showing off to fellow players, or the more formidable you’ll be if you decide to go on a murder-spree of your fellow vault-dwellers.
It’s easy to see how these systems are going to mesh together to make Fallout 76 more than the sum of its parts, much in the same way that Fallout 4 is so much more than its good-not-great combat, uneven story and string of hilarious bugs. In this sense it really does feel like a Bethesda Game Studios title already: no one system stands out as mind-bogglingly impressive, but when stitched together they create something special.
After four hours that’s my primary hope for Fallout 76, then. Make no mistake that something is lost from the magic of the series by stripping out the NPCs and more actively delivered narrative beats – and that’s likely to be most keenly felt in these opening hours. At the same time, however, these earliest hours already provide glimpses of how some Fallout 4’s systems like settlements, cooking and crafting fit better here than there. There’s also a hint of the excitement experienced when encountering another real player out in the wasteland – and there’s the suggestion there that as systems open up and players are forced to work together Fallout 76 could become something really memorable. I’ll keep pushing towards that this weekend, during the second phase of the Fallout 76 beta.

Cornerbacks Kris Boyd and Davante Davis suspended for 1st series of Oklahoma State game
Emahlstadtlaaaame
A loss of bye week focus means that Kris Boyd and Davante Davis will sit while the Horns roll out Kobe Boyce on one side and either Josh Thompson or true freshman Anthony Cook on the other in Stillwater. My suggestion? Win the coin toss, take the ball first, and engineer a 20 play, 15 minute scoring drive.
The Boyd Tax: it can strike at any time.
UPDATE: The suspension is likely to only be a series. It will also include LJH. That’s reassuring.

Mondrian’s flowers
Emahlstadti present to you, the most up-his-own-ass quote from kottke, perhaps of all time:
"I somehow didn’t know until recently that Piet Mondrian created a whole series of flowers, including charcoals and watercolors."
somehow... SOMEHOW, kottke didn't know about Piet Mondrian's flower series. what a miss. i mean, how does a guy of kottke's reputation not know sooner than 'recently' about Piet Mondrian's flower series? at least he admits it, humbly and throws in some good commentary on how Van Gogh-ish the chrysanthemum is, which, lets be honest, it is. it is very Van Gogh.
I somehow didn’t know until recently that Piet Mondrian created a whole series of flowers, including charcoals and watercolors.

The chrysanthemum, at least, is very Van Gogh. The amaryllis gives a hint of the primary colors to come in his work.

Will Texas, with five of the 15 largest cities in the U.S., have the first bullet train in the country? Curbed partnered with the Texas Tribune for a deep dive into the land rights and bureaucratic debate around the project that’s already raised $425 million. The goal is a 90-minute ride to cover the 240-miles from Dallas and Houston, and ultimately, a “super economy” created by linking half the state’s population.
Tags: Texas transportationAt the state Capitol, the bullet train represents the collision of two things that Republicans—who control Texas government—hold dear: private property rights and an unrestrained free market. Syfy to Make ‘Killer Klowns from Outer Space’ and ‘Critters’ Films [Exclusive]
We’re bringing all the treats this Halloween season and have just learned of some massively exciting news regarding two beloved 1980’s classics.
Bloody Disgusting is hearing exclusively that Syfy is in talks to license the rights to make new feature films based on the Chiodo brothers’ Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) and Stephen Herek’s Critters (1986).
While Critters has seen multiple sequels, fans have been clamoring for a Killer Klowns followup for decades. In the film, aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town. Syfy is making franchise reboots part of their new business model with a perfect example being Leprechaun Returns, set to premiere in March of 2019.
Critters is also sci-fi-themed and followed a group of small, furry aliens that make lunch out of the locals in a farming town. Leonardo DiCaprio made his film debut in the third Critters.
What would you like to see out of new films? Sequels? Remakes? What kind of story?
EVE Online CEO says “you can’t build a business” on VR as it is
Emahlstadtshocking
CCP CEO says that the closure of two of its studios is partially down to the fact that VR isn’t as big as expected.
Following the closure of Eve: Online developer’s Atlanta and Newcastle studios, CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson has said that the slow uptake on VR is somewhat to blame.
“We expected VR to be two to three times as big as it was, period,” he said in an interview with Destructoid. “You can’t build a business on that.”
CCP shut down two of its five studios last year, letting go of around 100 employees.
“May of last year (2017) is when we started to figure it out,” he said. “Was it a surprise? Maybe. But the picture was filling in that there would not be a way to continue with VR as heavily as we were.”

Talking about the recently revealed Oculus Quest, Pétursson added that “if it does take off, and I mean if, we’ll re-assess.
“The important thing is we need to see the metrics for active users of VR. A lot of people bought headsets just to try it out. How many of those people are active? We found that in terms of our data, a lot of users weren’t.”
Despite this, Pétursson says that he “remain[s] a long-term believer of VR.”

Jet Li Turned Down The Matrix Because He Didn’t Want CGI Versions Of His Moves
Emahlstadtactually a pretty smart take on the situation.

In an interview with Chinese anchor Chen Luyu, actor and martial artist Jet Li revealed that he turned down the role of Seraph, guardian of the Oracle, in both sequels to The Matrix after the filmmakers made an unusual request.
“It was a commercial struggle for me,” Li said, “I realized the Americans wanted me to film for three months but be with the crew for nine. And for six months, they wanted to record and copy all my moves into a digital library.”
He added, “By the end of the recording, the right to these moves would go to them.”
Li said back then, he was already worried that future technology would allow US filmmakers to digitally reproduce his moving body and superimpose the face of any actor onto it.
“I was thinking: I’ve been training my entire life. And we martial artists could only grow older. Yet they could own [my moves] as an intellectual property forever. So I said I couldn’t do that,” Li said.
Instead, Li made Hero, which was probably the right call. Still, I wonder whether who else has been in Li’s position, and how often we’ve seen one actor’s face in pantomime over another actor’s body? Or whether requests like these helped kill the short-lived boom in big budget martial arts movies we saw in the late 1990s/early 2000s?

Texas extends offer to 4-star 2020 OT Damieon George
EmahlstadtNo’ Sho’!
The Longhorns are now the latest to offer the coveted in-state offensive tackle prospect.
On Saturday afternoon, the Texas Longhorns extended an offer to four-star 2020 Houston North Shore offensive tackle Damieon George, he announced on Twitter.

— Damieongeorge (@damieongeorge) October 20, 2018
George is regarded as one of the elite offensive tackles in his recruiting class. He utilizes his long arms to his advantage and doesn’t have a problem with finishing off defenders.
A teammate of key Texas 2020 running back target Zachary Evans, George holds a total of 19 offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, among numerous others. The North Shore standout has had an impressive junior campaign, and will see his stock continue to rise heading into the offseason.
As for the Longhorns, they currently hold two commitments at the offensive tackle position in the 2019 recruiting cycle from Houston North Forest standout Javonne Shepherd and Conroe Oak Ridge star Tyler Johnson. Texas has offered a total of nine offensive tackles in the 2020 cycle and will be looking to add some more depth at the position as they intend to re-up for another spectacular year of recruiting.
At 6-foot-6, 320 pounds, George is ranked as the nation’s No. 268 prospect and as the No. 30 player in the state for the 2020 cycle, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
