Check Out Ten Tigers Parlour Replacing Chez Billy in Petworth – Grand Opening Saturday

by Prince Of Petworth

img_8614
3813 Georgia Avenue, NW

Back in August many of us were saddened to learn that the OG Chez Billy in Petworth had closed and would be reopening with a new concept. Having seen the new space and tasted the new concept, while I always will be a bit nostalgic for the old days, I’m super excited because Chef Tim Ma is the man and I freaking love pot stickers!!

Those who still lament the loss of Chez Billy may remain saddened by some of the interior changes (however: an even better renovated back patio will be coming this spring.) But those who love good food for a good price in a cool space will be very very happy.

img_8624

For those not familiar with the background of Ten Tigers:

“Ian and Eric Hilton, together with partners Scott Herman and Chef Tim Ma are set to open Ten Tigers Parlour, a neighborhood tea house and bar on December 10 in Petworth. Located in the former Chez Billy space at 3813 Georgia Avenue, NW, the Ten Tigers Parlour will feature an eclectic menu of cocktails, teas, Asian-style street food and pastries throughout the day and evening.

The concept of Ten Tigers Parlour is inspired by the Chinese cultural influences, where tea houses traditionally serve as the community gathering place not only to eat, but to connect. “It has always been our goal to create a great neighborhood spot for people; an extension of their living rooms,” says partner Ian Hilton.

Chef Tim Ma, of Kyirisan, Water & Wall and Chase the Submarine has developed a menu of casual favorites, inspired by dishes he enjoyed as a young child. “I want to present food that is close to my heart, said Chef Tim Ma. It’s great to be able to offer simple dishes that require technique, but are unpretentious and just tasty.” The menu is crafted around a selection of handmade Soup Dumplings ($12), a popular dish not easily found in town. There will be handmade Bao Buns ($9), Pan-Fried Dumplings ($7), a selection of noodles ($11 each), Rice Donburi ($10) and more of Chef Ma’s childhood favorites. Pastry Chef Mollie Bird has designed a offering of Chinese pastries for Ten Tigers that includes egg tarts, sesame balls, almond breads and other specialties.

The Victorian-era décor, complete with replicas of ancient Chinese paintings, original tile floors, and dark wooden beams, provides a sultry yet cozy environment, reminiscent of a late 19th century opium den. “We want to create a comfortable place with a unique vibe that is hard to come by in DC,” said co-owner and former U Street Music Hall general manager Scott Herman.
Ten Tigers’ beverage program offers an assortment of boba tea, Vietnamese coffee, and Thai iced tea in addition to French press coffee and an expanding list of hot teas. Specialty cocktails – all priced at $10 each – include the Mekhong Manhattan (sweet vermouth, honey, Angostura bitters, orange peel), 13 Pell (Tito’s vodka, lychee liquor, cranberry juice, lime slice), Singapore Sling (Plymouth gin, cherry brandy, sweet and sour, club soda, grenadine), Lychee Martini (lychee liquor, Three Olives vodka, lychee juice); and Canton Alley (Four Roses Yellow bouron, ginger liquor, grapefruit juice, black vinegar, candied ginger, lime slice).

At approximately 3,200 square feet, Ten Tigers will accommodate patrons across two levels, plus additional bar seats and a back patio that will be open to guests during warmer months. The main floor features a large bar and two spacious areas, while a second bar and dining/private events area can be found on the upper level. The tea house will open daily at 11 a.m. with the kitchen closing at 9 p.m. between Sunday and Thursday, and at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The bar will remain open until 2 a.m. on Thursday and through 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

For more information, please visit www.tentigersDC.com or find the team on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) at @TenTigersDC.”

Trump Supporter Cries Foul Over Arlington Parks Dept. Response to Request for Rally Permit

by ARLnow.com
V.w.verweij

lol my department.

Donald Trump for president sign(Updated at 7:10 p.m) Jack Posobiec, the Security and Special Projects Director for a group called Citizens for Trump, took to Twitter today to complain about Arlington County’s parks department.

The department, he said, told him he would not be able to hold a pro-Trump rally next month at Long Bridge Park.

While Posobiec implied that politics may have played a role (see below for more of his tweets), Arlington County Dept. of Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Susan Kalish said it was simply a matter of when he wanted to hold the event.

“The staff person he talked to said he was looking at Long Bridge Park for the inauguration,” Kalish said. “The park is closed on the 20th, but she said it was open on the 19th.”

Inauguration Day — Friday, Jan. 20 — is a county holiday and Parks and Recreation staffers have the day off.

“Our outdoor parks are open during their normal hours” on holidays, Kalish clarified, but “generally we don’t allow rentals on holidays as the staff that would support/monitor the facility are off.”

Following his phone call to the county on Monday, Posobiec has not yet followed up to file a permit application for another day, according to Kalish.

“He never submitted a formal request,” Kalish said. “We tried to call him back today but his voice mailbox was full. We reached back to [him] to contact us so we can see if space is available at the time and location he is interested in.”

“We can’t deny a permit for something we don’t have an permit application for,” she added.

Should Citizens for Trump successfully apply for a facility rental, an hourly rental fee would apply, as it does for any other person or group. The group may also need a Special Event Permit, Kalish told ARLnow.com.

“After we see what he needs we will try to accommodate it,” she said. “This sounds like a special event, and thus will also require a Special Event Permit. There is no cost for the Special Event Permit, however, this application helps us share the event information with all our County services (trash, public safety, street closures) so that we can better support the event organizer with his needs.”

Responding to an earlier request for comment, Posobiec said the parks department’s account of his call was “incorrect.”

“When I heard there was no way to apply for a permit on the 20th, it was I who suggested holding it on the 19th,” he told ARLnow.com in an email just before 7 p.m. “They asked what sort of event it was, and I told them it was a small rally of about 50 people to support the president. She then immediately told me that those types of events would not be allowed. I asked to speak with the director, but was only allowed to leave a message. Call was not returned.”

Posobiec said the event he wants to hold would be dubbed a “Rally to Support the President,” would take place at Long Bridge Park and would involve “a small stage for Citizens for Trump speakers.” He reiterated that he still would like to apply for a permit for the event.

(Posobiec says he is holding a separate event called the “Deploraball” on Jan. 19 at a private venue. Deploraball is not the name of the proposed Arlington event, as earlier reported.)

More of Posobiec’s tweets, after the jump.

Church to Hold Talk on ‘The End of White Christian America’

by ARLnow.com

Are we there yet?

'The End of White Christian America' author talk image

An author talk at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington (4444 Arlington Blvd) will examine Donald Trump’s election and the implications of the U.S. no longer being a majority white Christian nation.

The talk by Robert P. Jones, author of the “The End of White Christian America,”  is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m.

From a press release:

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington will host a talk with Robert P. Jones, the CEO of Public Religion Research Institute on Sunday, December 11, at 1:00 p.m. Jones will discuss his new book, The End of White Christian America, which has been hailed by The New York Times Review of Books as “quite possibly the most illuminating text for this election year.” Drawing on decades of public opinion and demographic research, Jones challenges us to grasp a new reality — that America is no longer a majority white Christian nation — and examines what influence this had on the 2016 presidential election.

The presentation and discussion will provide unique insight into:

  • The ways both political parties are responding to these shifts, including Donald Trump’s surprising appeal to white conservative Christian voters;
  • The stark disagreements between white and black Americans over the fairness of the justice system and the #BlackLivesMatter movement;
  • The apocalyptic tone of arguments over same-sex marriage and LGBT rights;
  • How these recent demographic and cultural changes are shaping — and often distorting — our understanding of principles such as equality, fairness, and religious freedom.

Good on ya Mayor Bowser part two:

From the Mayor:

“Today, I am flying to Mexico City to represent the District of Columbia at a gathering of mayors and other leaders of the world’s major cities who are working to fight and mitigate climate change. We are holding this meeting – the largest since the Paris climate accords last year – because we know the health and well-being of future generations depend on the actions we take now. This summit is a remarkable opportunity to learn about cutting-edge work being done in other global cities and to share lessons from the work we are pioneering here in Washington, DC.

Today, Washington, DC is at the forefront of decisive, effective action to slow and adapt to climate change. Since 2006, we have reduced our annual carbon emissions by more than 23 percent. We are committed to cutting our greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2032, and by 80 percent by 2050.

Under my administration, we have made ground-breaking deals to generate more than one-third of the power used in government buildings with wind and locally generated solar electricity. In fact, by 2032 – just 16 years from now – we will derive at least one-half of the entire city’s electricity from renewable resources.

In Washington, DC, we will tackle climate change head on as we continue our hard work in building a resilient city for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser”

Arlington Pets of the Week: Ivy and Olive

by ARLnow.com
Ivy and Olive pet of the week Ivy and Olive pet of the week Ivy and Olive pet of the week Ivy and Olive pet of the week

This week’s Arlington Pets of the Week are Ivy and Olive. They are sisters who love to cuddle, share toys and roughhouse!

Here’s what Ivy and Olive’s owners, Erica and Gregory, had to say about them:

This is Ivy (red collar) and Olive (blue collar)! They are about four months old — born July 22 — and were adopted from Last Chance Adoption in mid October. They are sisters from the same litter who could not be separated and one seemed to protect the other from the other puppies. We don’t really know much about their life prior to us, but they came from a big litter and are terrier mixes. We renamed them once we brought them home.

They are sisters and each other’s best friends. They enjoy cuddling people and one another, digging holes in the yard and playing fetch together. They share everything, you’ll never see one of them playing with a toy without the other trying to share it. They also love to play rough which includes biting each other’s ears and neck.

They love kids and have many neighborhood friends that come over and play everyday.

Like most dogs, they hate taking baths. They haven’t tried swimming yet, but are not interested in getting wet when we take them on hikes.

The last time they we to the vet, they weighed 13 pounds, so now they’re probably closer to 20 pounds. We were told that they will only grow to be about 40 pounds. Ivy and Olive are the best little puppies and we are so happy we got them both!!

Want your pet to be considered for the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email arlingtonnews@gmail.com with a 2-3 paragraph bio and at least 3-4 horizontally-oriented photos of your pet. Please don’t send vertical photos, they don’t fit in our photo galleries!

Each week’s winner receives a sample of dog or cat treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks. Becky’s Pet Care is the winner six consecutive Angie’s List Super Service Awards, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters’ 2013 Business of the Year and a proud supporter of the Arlington County Pawsitively Prepared Campaign.

Becky’s Pet Care provides professional dog walking and pet sitting in Arlington and all of Northern Virginia, as well as PetPrep training courses for Pet Care, CPR and emergency preparedness.

From Sea to Shining Sea – U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Travels Coast to Coast

The U.S. Capitol Christmas tree has made it to Washington, D.C.!  The tree spent two lovely nights in the BLM-Idaho Idaho Falls District ware yard before making its way across the United States to shine brightly on Washington D.C’s Capitol Hill. This year’s tree, an 80-foot tall Engelman Spruce, came from the Payette National Forest near Boise, Idaho and made 15 stops throughout the Gem State before landing to the west lawn in Washington D.C.

BLM Idaho’s Salmon Field Office and Idaho Falls District helped host two of the stops, which drew hundreds of individuals throughout the region. The tree travels through Utah, Colorado, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. The tree consumes 20-30 gallons of water each day via a tank at the tree’s base so it’s a good think Idaho Falls Fire kept lots of hoses on hand during the tree’s two day stay.

During the two hour event in Idaho Falls, the Bureau of Land Management handed out over 600 Junior Explorer Booklets about Trekking Volcanoes in Southeast Idaho. The kids were thrilled to have an activity book that takes them on an outdoor adventure and even more excited to find out that they lived so close to volcanic activity.  In addition, Santa, Smokey the Bear and the Idaho Potato Truck posed for non-stop pictures as approximately 1,000 individuals made their way through the event.

Morning Poll: Dreading Talking Politics During Thanksgiving?

by ARLnow.com

A decorative Thanksgiving turkeyJudging by the multiple Washington Post articles about it this year (and another from last year), it seems that some sizable percentage of the population is dreading their Thanksgiving dinner conversation following Donald Trump’s election.

Especially when the family is divided politically, such conversations can apparently go downhill fast.

Are you among those who cringe at the idea of Uncle Bob passing along his political views with the gravy and stuffing? Or is that not a concern for you?

Photos: Arlington Students Spread Messages of Love in Wake of Election

by ARLnow.com

These are Dumbledorian levels of action

Post-election message from Washington-Lee students on the Stafford Street bridge Post-election message from Washington-Lee students on the Stafford Street bridge Post-election message from Washington-Lee students on the Stafford Street bridge Post-election message from Washington-Lee students on the Stafford Street bridge Post-election message from Washington-Lee students on the Stafford Street bridge

(Updated at 6 p.m.) Local high school students have been spreading messages of love to counter an otherwise gloomy post-election atmosphere in deep-blue, multicultural Arlington County.

During his campaign, president-elect Donald Trump made statements that many felt were hurtful and threatening to immigrants, Muslims, people of color and, perhaps to a lesser extent, LGBT individuals — communities that are well-represented in Arlington. In response, students have their own message.

“Love and respect all life,” “stronger together,” “united not divided,” “forever forward,” and “love trumps hate,” are a few of the messages Washington-Lee High School students have written in chalk on the Stafford Street bridge near the school. There are also quotes from Maya Angelou and Nelson Mandela.

Elsewhere in Arlington, a message to students at H-B Woodlawn (below) has gone viral on social media.

The message of reassurance, to women and minority communities, has spread on social media and received nearly a quarter million likes after pop star Lady Gaga posted it on her Instagram account.

At Wakefield High School, chalk messages outside the school entrance today included affirmations like “smile,” “you matter” and “be the change.”

Post-it notes on the school’s doors (below) also offered positive, personal messages for students, who were encouraged to take one on their way into school.

https://twitter.com/whssuperfans/status/798149528679579648

Arlington was not totally immune to a national wave of hateful messages, however. In the wake of the election there were some isolated reports of racist (confirmed by police; link is NSFW), anti-gay (not confirmed by police; link is NSFW) and anti-Trump graffiti around Arlington.

The following graffiti incidents have been reported since last Tuesday’s election, according to an Arlington County Police spokeswoman.

GRAFFITI, 2016-11090173, 2700 block of S. Nelson Street. On November 9 at approximately 2:16 PM, police were dispatched to the report of graffiti in the area. Officers located a delivery truck vandalized with black spray paint but the words were not clearly written and officers could not determine what the graffiti stated. There are no suspect(s) descriptions.

GRAFFITI, 2016-11110113, 6600 block of Little Falls Road. On November 11 at approximately 11:34 AM, police were dispatched to the report of graffiti in the area. Officers located the words “Truck Frump,” “Bet,” “LMOA” and an obscenity spray painted on the football field. There are no suspect(s) descriptions.

GRAFFITI, 2016-11120136, W&OD Trail – Rt. 66 at N. Ohio Street. On November 12 at approximately 11:33 AM, police were dispatched to Bluemont Park for the report of graffiti in the area. Officers located numerous graffiti markings including the words “Trump,” “U.S. Border,” “Caution huge,” and a derogatory term spray painted on the pavement and wall. There are no suspect(s) description.

We’ve known it was coming for a while now but it doesn’t lessen the sting. This is another one of those spots that was THE (along with Thai Crossing) spot to go in the area before there were so many spots to go…

“Dear PoPville,

Heading to work this morning and it looked as though my neighbors at Zenebech may finally be closing for good (they’ve been talking about their last day for a while). They had a robust dinner service last night, but it didn’t seem out of the ordinary. Can someone confirm if they’ve officially closed their doors?”

Alas, they confirm on their facebook in response to a question:

“Our last day has been postponed to sometime mid-October.”

“Do you have a new closing date yet? You will be dearly missed while you relocate!”

“It’s been pushed to this Sunday” [This Sunday as in yesterday]
