23-year-old spectacled bear, Cisco, died at the Zoo yesterday

by Prince Of Petworth

From the National Zoo:

“A 23-year-old male Andean bear named Cisco died at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Oct. 24 during an emergency veterinary exam. In the past week, Cisco became less active and began breathing more heavily with an occasional cough. Those signs worsened over the weekend and his appetite declined, which prompted keepers and veterinarians to move an exam scheduled for later this week to Monday morning.

During the exam, veterinarians immediately noticed that Cisco was having difficulty breathing. A chest ultrasound revealed large amounts of liquid in his lungs and abnormal soft-tissue masses within his chest cavity. The team performed an emergency thoracentesis to remove the fluid from his chest to help improve his breathing. It was at that point that Cisco developed cardiopulmonary arrest. Due to his grave prognosis, the team made the decision not to resuscitate Cisco, and let him humanely pass pain-free and quietly. Male Andean bears in human care, on average, live into their early 20s. A final pathology report will provide more details in the coming weeks.

“Cisco was important to the Andean bear population living in zoos,” said Craig Saffoe, curator of Andean bears at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. “Having come to the National Zoo at 20 years old, he proved that older male Andean bears are quite capable of producing offspring. He helped us learn more about Andean bears, and we are sharing everything we have learned about their husbandry, breeding, nutrition and veterinary care from him and our other bears with colleagues in other zoos and in Peru to help the species.”

Born in 1993 at the Calgary Zoo, Cisco came to the National Zoo on loan from the Queens Zoo in New York in September 2013. During his time at the National Zoo, he sired two male cubs born in November 2014. Those cubs, Mayni and Muniri, now live at Nashville Zoo.

Andean bears, also known as spectacled bears, are South America’s only bear species. As their name suggests, they live in the Andes and outlying mountain ranges. Andean bears are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, and it is estimated that there are only 2,000 left in the wild.

The Zoo’s adult female bear, Billie Jean, can be seen at the Andean bear exhibit.”

Supreme Court justices and protesters have both come to Arlington’s Virginia Square neighborhood for a dedication ceremony for George Mason University’s newly-named Antonin Scalia Law School.

The ceremony started at 11 a.m. at the law school, located at 3301 Fairfax Drive. Police have closed N. Kirkwood Road as a security measure.

The school was named for the late Supreme Court justice after GMU received $30 million in donation pledges. In addition to the six Supreme Court justices expected to attend this morning, members of the Scalia family are also on hand for the dedication.

The protesters say they’re demonstrating against the university’s decision to put “donor interests before those of its students and faculty.”

Green Man Accosts Passersby in Shirlington

by ARLnow.com
V.w.verweij

Arlington, staying relevant.

"Green Man" from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (screencap via Wikia)A man dressed in a green bodysuit was cursing at passersby in Shirlington yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, but no arrests were made.

Police were called around 4:30 p.m. for a man dressed like “Green Man” — a green full-body outfit that also covered his face — who was yelling and accosting people near the Shirlington Branch Library and the Harris Teeter grocery store.

Officers responded but were unable to find anything warranting criminal charges.

“Police were dispatched to the 4200 block of Campbell Ave at approximately 4:32 p.m. for the report of a suspicious man screaming profanities,” said Arlington County Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage. “Police responded to the area and after investigation determined that no crime had occurred.”

Arlington Pet of the Week: Charlie

by ARLnow.com
Charlie, Arlington Pet of the Week Another photo of Charlie, Arlington Pet of the Week Closeup of Charlie, Arlington Pet of the Week

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Charlie, an attention-loving dog who won this year’s Crystal City Pups and Pilsners social media photo contest. (That’s him, above, at the dog-friendly beer tasting event last weekend.)

Charlie is a Shih Tzu who, like many of us, enjoys being a “lazy bones” on the weekend.

Here’s what Charlie’s owner had to say about him:

Hi, my name is Charlie! I’m a 3 year old Shih Tzu. I may be small but I love being the center of attention!

I’m very friendly and want to say hi to everyone and everything! I loooove going outside during the week and being a lazy bones on the weekends. I have a few tricks if you have treats. If you’re in Arlington or attend dog friendly events, you may see me running around. Check out my Instagram, @TzuAndBrew, where you can see pictures of me and the craft beer my humans drink!

Want your pet to be considered for the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email arlingtonnews@gmail.com with a 2-3 paragraph bio and at least 3-4 horizontally-oriented photos of your pet. Please don’t send vertical photos, they don’t fit in our photo galleries!

Each week’s winner receives a sample of dog or cat treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks. Becky’s Pet Care is the winner six consecutive Angie’s List Super Service Awards, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters’ 2013 Business of the Year and a proud supporter of the Arlington County Pawsitively Prepared Campaign.

Becky’s Pet Care provides professional dog walking and pet sitting in Arlington and all of Northern Virginia, as well as PetPrep training courses for Pet Care, CPR and emergency preparedness.

New ‘Virginia is for all Lovers’ Campaign Promotes LGBT Tourism

by Andrew Ramonas

Virginia is for Lovers (Image via Virginia Tourism Corp.)Virginia tourism officials have started a new marketing push to bring more LGBT travelers to the Commonwealth.

Virginia Tourism Corp. yesterday announced it has a new LGBT travel website, which notes that “Virginia is for all Lovers.”

Visitors to the website can find LGBT-friendly hotels, restaurants, shops, wineries, breweries and attractions. The site also has a “Virginia is for Lovers Pride Shop” with hats, pins and T-shirts for sale.

“Virginia is proud to be an open and welcoming destination for every visitor attracted by our scenic mountains and beaches, as well as our world-renowned restaurants, wineries and breweries,” Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a statement. “I am pleased the Virginia Tourism Corporation has created this landing page to connect travelers with inclusive, LGBT-friendly establishments across the Commonwealth.”

The website came out of recommendations from the LGBT Tourism Task Force, which McAuliffe put together last year.

Members of the LGBT community make up about 5 percent of Virginia tourists, according to Virginia Tourism Corp. They also take longer trips to Virginia and spend more money in the Commonwealth than all other visitors there, the tourism authority noted.

“A vacation in Virginia is all about doing the things you love to do with the ones that you love, and we are thrilled to offer this new resource for the LGBT community, their friends, and their families, to help them plan the perfect vacation in Virginia,” Rita McClenny, president and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corp., said in a statement.

Macht Amerika groß noch einmal!

by Derf Backderf

This photo popped up in my Facebook feed this morning. A young woman snapped this photo at the Bloomsburg Fair in central Pennsylvania, over the weekend. Just as it was starting to go viral, Facebook deleted the post for "violating community standards." I'm guessing Trumpians filed complaints. The photo is of a vendor at the popular fair-- can't quite make out what they're selling other than flags-- with the delightful juxtaposition of a Trump flag and a Hitler Youth flag (That's what this is. I looked it up). There appears to be a dozen Nazi flags for sale, all bunched up there.

I haven't been able to find anything else about this. It's rural Pennsylvania, so it's not as if there's a lot of media coverage there. It could also be that Fair officials put the kibosh on this pretty quick. The Facebook page of the Bloomsburg Fair is riddled with comments bashing them for the flag vendor. They can't delete the comments fast enough!

Central Pennsylvania has, sadly, become a hotbed of loony rightwing types, most famously Police Chief Mark Kessler, whose insane Youtube rants against "libtards" cost him his job a few years ago, and Eric Frein, a sovereign citizen nutjob who shot two state troopers, killing one of them, before leading authorities on a 48-day manhunt in 2014. The Southern Poverty Law Center finds that Pennsylvania is #5 for most hate groups in the US, and is #1 for anti-government groups.

This is the ugly reality in the rural Midwest, including, sadly, here in Ohio. Since I was born and raised in rural Ohio, and have witnessed firsthand the evolution of smalltown farmers to frothing gun nuts, I know the "Basket of Deplorables" is a very real thing. This county fair display isn't a rare exception. It's a reflection.

ADDENDUM: The fair confiscated the flags and closed down the vendor and has scheduled a board meeting where said vendor will no doubt be permanently banned. No doubt they are expecting a lawsuit from the vendor and his loon backers, so they have to do it by the book.

It also turns out, the vendor, who also is selling all manner of vile bumper stickers and t-shirts (example: Aids Kills Fags) is a registered sex offender perv, having been charged on 20 counts of child pornography in 2007.

“I’ve been doing this shit for 45 years,” says Lawrence Betsinger, the man with the Nazi flags. “I can’t see where it would be some tragic thing just because somebody bitched and moaned about it.” I've no doubt he has indeed been a regular seller at fairs and flea markets and gun shows. I've seen shit like this myself, although not with the delicious Nazi + Trump visual.

And now the libtards and the homos have done cost ol' Lar him some fair money! I'm betting the far-right loons all pitch in to help him out. His business will probably double.
