There’s a Sleater-Kinney/’Bob’s Burgers’ Crossover Video and You Should Watch It

by Tom Hawking

Bobs Sleater

The official video was just released for Sleater-Kinney’s single “A New Wave”… and it was made by the creators of Bob’s Burgers. The animated film features Tina Belcher slipping the new Sleater-Kinney record into her CD player, and being greeted with a vision of the band themselves playing in her bedroom. The noise attracts her equally awesome siblings, and soon there’s a whole lot of psychedelic headbanging going on. In other words, it’s great and it combines two of our favorite things and you should watch it right now:

The 10 Most ’60s Movies of the ’60s

by Jason Bailey

There’s something specifically, quaintly wonderful about the counterculture movies of the late ‘60s: the costumes, the slang-y dialogue, the hallucinogen-inspired cinematography, the way the color temperatures have faded just so. Fans of the period are in for a treat this week, as Olive Films has debuted sparkling new Blu-ray editions of two key ‘60s indies: Roger Corman’s The Wild Angels and Richard Rush’s Psych-Out; in celebration of that release, a look at those films and a handful of others that best encapsulate the period (or, at least, cinema’s best attempts to capture it).

Peter Fonda in "The Wild Angels"

The Wild Angels

Producer/director Roger Corman kicked off the whole outlaw biker movie movement—and a new moment in the youth-geared cinema he’d been making his bones in since the ‘50s—with this 1966 cult classic, starring Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd, and (per the credits) “members of HELLS ANGELS of Venice, CA.” Casting the children of Hollywood royalty like Henry Fonda and Frank Sinatra gives the picture an undeniable subtextual kick, and the real Angels filling out the frame lend a documentary authenticity to the fights and parties. Corman’s picture has a rough energy and timely anti-authoritarian spirit, best dramatized in the notorious funeral scene, where Fonda’s “We wanna be free!” speech becomes something of a manifesto for the period.

The Differences Between Copywriters And Art Directors

by Megi7

artdirector-copywriter-difference

The brush

In the late 1950s, advertising legend Bill Bernbach came up with the idea of pairing art directors and copywriters into teams. The strategy worked and DDB ended up creating some of the most iconic work of that era. Since then, the art-copy team structure came into existence at most, if not all, agencies. They may be working towards a common goal, but as a creative species, copywriters and art directors are not all that similar. Check out 17 of the best illustrations on this subject

How Do School Lunches Around The World Look?

by Dovas

It’s important that growing children eat healthy, but judging by the appearances of some school lunches out there, it doesn’t seem like schools like to deliver the goods. But with the help of her dad and the Sweetgreen restaurant chain, 12-year-old Scottish schoolgirl Martha Payne released a series of school lunch comparisons from countries around the world on her blog, where she reviews the school lunches she and others eat.

From a US or UK perspective, the school lunches in many other countries seem mouth-wateringly fresh and varied. The lunches from Brazil and South Korea especially stood out for their delicious-looking variety. In other countries, unfortunately, lunch ladies have earned reputations as distributors of foul, toxic concoctions.

Let us know in the comments – which lunch looks the best to you? What did your childhood school lunch look like?

Career Advancement

And to anyone at my office who reads this comic, don’t you worry, I’m not quitting; I really like my job =)

–RANDOM THOUGHT–

I’ve just started watching some Twitch streams while drawing comics. I probably won’t be streaming my comic-making process (it’s pretty boring, trust me), BUT if I were to play video games and stream myself doing that thing, is that a thing that you people-things would enjoy?

Some of the World's Most Harrowing Roads

by Lisa Marcus

Norway's Atlantic Ocean Road is a little over five miles long, connecting the towns of Kristiansund and Molde in the midwestern section of the coastline. According to its entry on dangerousroads.com,

"Driving along the Atlantic Road is like teetering on the edge of the sea... The curvy road dips and arches over the brutal waves of the Norwegian Sea that often crash over the pavement during storms, and was subjected to 12 hurricanes during construction."

YouTube Link

As shown in the video above, waves splash onto the highway regularly, leaving quite a bit of water on the road's surface. See other pictures of this roller coaster highway at the dangerous roads link above.

The photo above is North Yungas Road in Bolivia, which locals call "The Road of Death." Its nickname is fitting in that a 2006 study estimated that 200 to 300 travelers die every year on the roadway, which connects the Amazon rainforest with La Paz.

Chulumani Road (below) in Bolivia is also referred to as "South Yungas Road." The frightening looking pathway, with what appears to be a dropoff into the clouds, is actually an alternate route for people to take if they don't want to travel North Jungas Road.

This 1956 Kitchen Hasn’t Been Touched For 50 Years

by Dovas
David Mulhern

Whoah!

In a strange and unexpected discovery, furniture designer and creator Nathan Chandler found and bought a home that had remained sealed since 1956, keeping its mid-century American interior perfectly intact. Though the house has recently been sold, the retro interior design of this kitchen provided us with a look at a time long gone.

It’s not clear why the original owners of the home kept it sealed for so long, but we’re glad they did, because the interior décor elements are absolutely perfect. From the pastel pink counters to the manuals still attached to the unused GE home appliances, every detail is straight out of a 1950s American family sitcom.

The fate of this period kitchen is uncertain, but we’re glad to have had a look into such a strangely-preserved historic space!

Photographer Captures World’s Tiniest Rodeo: Frog Riding A Beetle

by Dovas
David Mulhern

He's happy.

Hendy Mp, a talented wildlife photographer based in Indonesia, has captured what is probably one of the weirdest spectacles we’ve ever seen – a tree frog going for a wild rodeo ride on the back of a giant horned wood-boring beetle. The tree frog is a Reinwardt’s Flying Frog, a threatened species that can glide down from trees with the skin between its fingers and toes.

The wild and adorable scene was captured not far from Mp’s home in Sambas, Indonesia. Mp is a fan of macro photography, and uses it to capture beautiful larger-than life photos of the many different beautiful insects, reptiles and amphibians native to Indonesia.

If you love having a close-up look at the tiny world of frigs, lizards and insects, then you’ll definitely love these photos by Vyacheslav Mishchenko and Miki Asai as well.

The 50 Greatest Poems About Sex

by Jonathon Sturgeon

It would be unwise, unfair, and impossible to list the sexiest poems in the Western tradition. Sex, you don’t need me to tell you, is variable, personal, and subjective. “Greatness is, too,” you might add. Maybe it is. But there is something about the poetry on this list that transcends the merely “good.” These poems, which span from antiquity to today, are great poems. There is something egalitarian, too, about this selection, which more or less chose itself. Sex as a poetic subject has a way of equalizing discourse by way of its universality.

I will only add that many of these poems are from antiquity, though, because the more you look at it, there is a kind of Hollywood pre-code logic at work: the Greek and Latin poets featured here were unencumbered by Judeo-Christian norms. As always, too, it’s not possible to include everything. Add your sex poem candidates in the comments. Also: I’ve gone light on the commentary — choosing instead to feature snippets of each poem — because nothing kills the joy of a sex poem like gratuitous notation.

“Fresh Cheese and Cream,” Robert Herrick

Note: This is the entire poem.

WOULD ye have fresh cheese and cream?
Julia’s breast can give you them.
And, if more, each nipple cries
To your cream here’s strawberries.

The Greatest Love Letter

by Miss Cellania

As Valentines Day nears, British life insurance company Beagle Street commissioned a poll to find out which of the world’s great love letters is the best. The list of the ten that participants selected from included letters from poets, politicians, and kings, and they are full of love. The letter voted the best was written by Johnny Cash to his wife June Carter Cash on the occasion of her 65th birthday in 1994.

    June 23 1994
    Odense, Denmark.

    Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

    Happy Birthday Princess.

Cold Bruer Coffee Brewer

by Katie

If you thought cold coffee was for snobs or sugar junkies, think again. Cold brew coffee is often less acidic and less bitter than hot brewed coffee, and more palatable with milk. Using a slow-drip process with an adjustable valve, the Cold Bruer Coffee Brewer lets you play around with brew time to get your ideal cup. However, don’t think you’ll pull this sort of cold brewing off in a quick minute; the recommended brew time is a 6-hour span, at a drip per second.

Designers: Gabe Herz and Andy Clark

Material: Borosilicate glass, food-grade silicone, stainless steel
Size: 10″ h x 5″ w (25.4×12.7cm)

Details: Makes up to 4 cups

Forget Treadmill Desks. You Need a Surfboard Desk!

by John Farrier

Office furniture designers have a goal: to annoy workers as much as possible. They want to make office work even more unpleasant, so they've invented devices like treadmill desks, hamster wheel desks, punching bag keyboards, and full-body mouse controllers. This is, of course, precisely the wrong direction we should be moving in. The optimal work position is supine in a comfortable bed.

One popular take on this concept is that terrible yet persistent idea: the standing desk. A standing desk requires that you stand whenever you need to do work, instead of sitting in a comfortable chair. If you're in reasonably good health, you can probably stand up for a long time. Maybe even an entire work shift. Perhaps the experience isn't so awful after all.
