ryannorth: In case you’ve missed the news, drunk driver,...

ryannorth:

In case you’ve missed the news, drunk driver, homophobe, and Toronto’s current mayor Rob Ford’s history of being an embarrassment (yes there are so many incidents that the public is now keeping a spreadsheet updated) hit new heights the past two weeks!  During that time:

  1. a video of him smoking crack cocaine was shown to journalists
  2. He refused to resign, saying the story was ridiculous (nobody has contested this, this whole situation is ridiculous)
  3. After ducking the issue for eight days and saying nothing Rob Ford finally issued a carefully-worded denial that suspiciously used the present tense a lot and never talked about the past (“I do not smoke crack cocaine” vs what he could’ve said: “I have never smoked crack cocaine, I would not do it on the job, and most certainly would not do it on video, hah hah hah what a CRAZY STORY”)
  4. Lots of his staff have quit or been fired, some for telling him to seek treatment
  5. It was revealed that one of the people seen in a photo taken at the same time as the crack recording has been murdered
  6. The police have been investigating and interviewing people in his office, after which his response to media was the hilarious “Everything’s fine.  I have no idea what the police are investigating.” (this is now my go-to response to any “hey, how’ve you been” question, by the way)
  7. That’s where my protest sign above came from; this was a six point explanation so now you can find my little sign extremely hilarious

ANYWAY.  This is all to say that there was a little protest today and Jenn and Emily and I went!  I thought there’d be lots of funny signs but mine was one of the few jokey ones.  I got to talk to reporters and said “I just want people to know there’s more to Toronto than crack cocaine” and that got published a few hours later as “there’s more to Toronto than Rob Ford”, which, I mean, is also true.  But there’s ALSO more to Toronto than crack cocaine.  For example, did you know we are the home of the IKEA monkey?

We look forward to your tourism dollars.

Doors of Durin

If we get the doors open and plug up the dam on the Sirannon so the water rises a little, the pool will start draining into Moria. How do you think the Watcher would fare against a drenched Balrog?

Ginger Coconut Milk Soup

The other day I posted a quick snapshot of my lunch on instagram (if you're there, I'm @heidijswanson). It was a soup I make quite often this time of year - with little riffs or tweaks each time. A few of you emailed me on the side asking for specifics, so I thought I'd share it here today. The gist is this - simmer a good amount of grated ginger and shallots in coconut milk, add the brightest spring vegetables you can get your hands on, and serve over egg noodles (or, alternately, pan-fried shredded yuba skins*). I like to finish with lots of cilantro and a squeeze of lime, but whatever fresh herbs you have on hand will do.

Sometimes I add tiny cubes of tofu or tempeh for a bit more protein. And in the fall, I do a version steamed winter squash, lots of finely shredded kale, and a motherload of spices - lots of turmeric, cumin, chile pepper, and coriander. The ginger-spiked coconut broth is an easy-going backdrop for noodles, rice, grains, vegetables, added spices...I just pull from whatever I have on hand. In this case, I love the way the coconut milk lightly clings to each noodle, coating it just enough.

For those of you who take lunch to work, you can bring some of the broth in a thermos (or heat in a microwave), and bring the pre-cooked noodles and vegetables, cold, in a bag. Adding them just before you're ready to eat.

TY, Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will not disturb a lower court ruling that blocks Indiana's effort to strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood because the organization performs abortions.

"That money will help the institute hire a “senior, world-class” scientist as its CEO" If it's not Neil DeGrasse Tyson, I'm gonna be pissed.

The $360 million initiative will be formally launched on Thursday by Gov. Mike Pence, executives of five major life sciences companies and officials of the state’s research universities.

When Did Fox News Take Over Facebook?

by pyrit

Look at all these baby fox pics! Talk about your complete coverage. It’s like, something from those kinds of people…

8752457818_68ca0e9cfb_z
You know, the people who take 600 photos of their kids each week,

And write a caption for every single picture,

And share them all online,

with their friends, family, everybody,

And tend to over share everything.

Palm Tree Get On My Face

by Orblogdo

"There’s something totally old lady mall-walker about it which is what makes it so bad ass."

Dear Diary,

Because I live in Los Angeles, most of my waking hours are spent thinking about palm trees, coconuts, fruit flavored gum, sunscreen, and palm trees. And did I mention palm trees? Also, being that this coming weekend is Memorial Day weekend, the entire homosexual population of Los Angeles will be evacuating to Palm Springs. I actually have no idea what happens to people who stay in LA. What do they do with no gay waiters to feed them at restaurants? No gay hairstylists to do their hair? And no gay decorators to decorate their homes? Every single gay person who lives in Los Angeles is going to Palm Springs. And guess what they are going to do there. They are going to ogle palm trees, rub coconut-scented oil all over each other, chew fruit flavored gum, and then ogle some more palm trees. Speaking of palm trees and tropicaltimez, I’m elated that that frond patterns are trending so hard right now. I’ve been a fan of Martinique’s Amazing banana leaf patterned classic wallpaper for a while now:

martinique-wallpaper-palm

Its most famous installation is at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I’d like to install my face onto that wall. Forever.

I also dig the Martinique paper here:

And here (in a space designed by Steven Sclaroff):

And here, in this space designed by Nate Berkus:

palm-wallpaper

Ugh. I hate Nate Berkus. Mainly because I want to steal his identity so that I can pretend I designed the beautiful space above. Yearning…

Because I’m renting, and the likelihood of me wallpapering is about 7%, I think I am going to have to get my fix through accessories and clothing. In my recent internet trolling, I found a few things I want/need. Here you go!

palm-tree-pillow

Pillow, $40

I want this pillow. I want to snuggle this pillow. I want to take this pillow to daddy and me yoga. I want to bring this pillow home to meet my parents. I want to be in a thruple involving me, my boyfriend, and this pillow, where my boyfriend sometimes gets jealous that I’m spending too much time with the pillow.

palm-tree-shirt

Shirt, $60

Remember when you used to make fun of your friend’s dad for wearing cheesy Hawaiian shirts? And now cheesy Hawaiian shirts are totally haute? And now I want all of them?

0722416052_2_1_1

Sweatshirt, $60

In a strange turn of events that has caused me to question reality, this sweater looks TERRIBLE on this model but looked AMAZING on my friend who wore it to Cinespia over the weekend. Usually clothing always looks better on models, but this one is better in real life. Full disclosure: my friend is a model.

palm-tree-shirt-2

Shirt, $25

I like that this one is in black and white. It’s tropical California funland, yet moody and depressing. It’s basically the t-shirt version of a Hedi Slimane photograph. Which makes me need it even more.

1608421505_2_1_1

Blazer, $100

This is the tackiest, cheesiest, most tasteless jacket I’ve ever seen. I’ll take three.

8369409707_2_1_1

Zara Shirt, $40, Shorts, $40

I’m kind of into this idea. I saw some dudes at Coachella wearing monoprint (matching shirt/pants) outfits and I thought it was totally cool. There’s something totally old lady mall-walker about it which is what makes it so bad ass.

So there we go. I have a lot of shopping to do before the weekend if I’m going to blend in with them palm trees!

Coconuts,
Orlando
