Houston Collective Opens a New Studio and Gallery Space in the East End

by Jessica Fuentes

Concept Neighborhood, a Houston real estate investment, development, and management company, has announced that a new studio and gallery space will be opening in The Plant in Second Ward, in the city’s East End.

Earlier this year, Aurora Picture Show announced that it would relocate its headquarters to The Plant, and now Emergent & Co., a newly formed collective of creatives, has signed a lease for a 4,300-square-foot space within the complex (located at 201 Roberts St.). The space will include a creative studio, gallery, speakeasy, and recording/podcast studios.

Though there have been few commercial galleries based in the East End, the neighborhood does have a history of fostering creative talent. Many artists have lived in the area; the Commerce Street Artists Warehouse was a famous live-work space for many artists from its founding in 1985 until its closure in 2010, and further east, the Lawndale artist warehouse (which became the nonprofit Lawndale, now located in the Museum District) was founded as an annex for University of Houston students. Other now-closed art spaces in the neighborhood have included The Axiom and The Chicano Arts Gallery, among others. More recently, BOX13 Artspace has operated in a former sewing machine factory and showroom in the East End since 2008, and Houston transplant Paul Middendorf ran galleryHOMELAND and then Space HL in various locations in the neighborhood from 2012 until 2020.

In a press release, Jeff Kaplan, managing partner of Concept Neighborhood, remarked, “Houston has long been a sleeper cell city for creatives, and we’ve experienced a recent influx of artists across all disciplines relocating from traditional markets such as New York and Los Angeles. Our city offers a lower cost of living compared to other big U.S. markets, and The Plant in Second Ward has historically served as a hub for the creative community. Organizations such as Emergent & Co. establishing roots in the East End Houston Cultural District is a testament to the appeal of our neighborhood.”

Emergent was founded earlier this year by Houston-based artists Taylor “Tay Powers” Barner, Emmanuel Alia, and Will York III. The collective will offer studio spaces and other resources in an effort to serve as an incubator for local artists.

Emergent’s inaugural exhibition, Remember the Moment, is organized in collaboration with the MAG (Modern Art Gallery), Deborah Colton Gallery, and Outpost NYC. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, October 27 and features works by photographers William John Kennedy and Suzanne Paul; some of the photos that will be on view depict Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Madonna during the early stages of their careers.

Australia votes against creating an Indigenous panel to advise Parliament

by The Associated Press
Cowboy Who?

This makes me sad.

Indigenous women sit on a bench at a polling place in Sydney as Australians cast their final votes in the referendum to create an Indigenous advocacy committee to Parliament.

Advocates for constitutional change in Australia said they were devastated by the defeat of a referendum that would have created a committee to offer advice on policies that affect Indigenous people.

Sure You Can Regulate My Uterus, But You’ll Have to Find it First

by Kathryn Baecht

Where’s my uterus? Wouldn’t you like to know. I’ll give you a clue. Last week my uterus was in one of the undisclosed locations where DICK CHENEY USED TO HIDE.

But it’s not there anymore, SUCKERS.

What’s that? You want to know what’s inside my uterus? Well, I hope you have a portable sonogram machine that works with a generator, because if you want to find my uterus, you will have to travel to THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN.

But be careful; my uterus is currently wearing a string of WATERPROOF LED LIGHTS and is perfectly camouflaged in the middle of A FLOTILLA OF STINGING BIOLUMINESCENT JELLYFISH.

Oh, wait, I just got an encrypted message from my uterus. It left the ocean and is currently PILOTING A HELICOPTER over the BERMUDA TRIANGLE on its way to YOUR MOM’S HOUSE.

Oh, you didn’t think I was really going to tell you where it’s going, DID YOU? Also, by the way, did you know that YOUR MOM IS PRO-CHOICE?

That’s right, last month, your mom was hiding my uterus under the bed in YOUR OLD ROOM. You need to get your stuff out of there, by the way. She wants to turn it into a GIFT-WRAPPING ROOM.

In fact, she gift-wrapped my uterus and mailed it to THE PAST, where secret agents hid it in AL CAPONE’S VAULT, but when Geraldo opened it, my uterus HAD VANISHED.

That’s right, my uterus can travel through time and space. You might have even seen it in the latest photos of THE RING NEBULA from the JAMES WEBB TELESCOPE.

Yes, even nebulae are PRO-CHOICE. They decide IF AND WHEN they birth a star.

After chilling in the nebula, my uterus hitched a ride back to earth on THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE, where it GOT DRUNK WITH A FERENGI but still managed to earn the rank of ENSIGN FIRST CLASS.

You heard right, my uterus can even hide in FICTIONAL UNIVERSES, so you might as well give up trying to find it and regulate it because my uterus is SO FUCKING BADASS that it SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF YOU, DOESN’T IT?

DOESN’T IT?

Is that a Cricket I Hear? - Contemporary Sound Options for the Apple IIc

by Great Hierophant

The "c" in the Apple IIc stood for compact. The Apple IIc was designed to be the epitome of the Apple II series, providing the options most people used in a realistically portable form factor but sacrificing the internal expansion slots which made the predecessor models in the Apple II line so popular. While sound cards like the Mockingboard were not the most popular of expansion cards, about three dozen games and music programs supported them. As there was nowhere to plug in a Mockingboard into a IIc, that left the IIc with only the internal speaker for audio output. But at least two sound products were made specifically for the Apple IIc, and I will take a look at one of them, the Cricket, in this blog article.
