Critiquing Erotic Simpsons Helmut Newton Homages

by Marina Galperina
Critiquing Erotic Simpsons Helmut Newton Homages

This is Marge and Homer Simpson, “immortalized” by artist aleXsandro Palombo in the style of photographer Helmut Newton and I hate it as an art project. Not because it’s kitschy, subpar link bait. Because it communicates, through pop culture, the weakest highlights of the ”Newton aesthetic” and only the banal bits of the sadomasochistic housewife motif.

See “Marge Simpson take off her housewife clothes to become a femme fatale” side-by-side the originals.

Unlike the abundance of animated Simpsons fan porn freely available on the internet for many years, the Newton homage elevates the project a bit. So let us wank on this premise a bit: Marge, the epitome of housewife for the last 25 years, takes off her clothes and viola! Femme fatale. That’s very liberating, in a ’50s sort of way.

Now there’s nothing wrong with housewifing. Some people are into that. There’s also nothing wrong with poising submissively in only a dog leash. Some people are into that. I am more into Newton’s body of work that does the latter, personally. Most of it is solid, yet dull.

Seems like the least interesting photographs in Newton’s gigantic body of work were used here. It fits the family branding more.

And just when it looks like it might be leaning towards some interesting variation is happening within the Newton-beloved dynamic, it’s omitted. I mean, it has to.

A deep cut. Plus bush. A slither of Marge’s labia would probably traumatize even the most hardened of us.

The Newton selfie. Right. Something something self-awareness Courbet something.

Never mind. I can’t do this anymore.

Wear Your Drug of Choice Around Your Neck

by Andy Cush
Wear Your Drug of Choice Around Your Neck

If you’re the type of person who feels the need to broadcast your habits to the world, try “Designer Drugs,” a jewelry collection based on the molecular structures of various controlled substances. They’re creatively titled, too, with names like “Tripping Balls,” “Candy Flipping,” “Speedball,” “Spliff,” et cetera. Get it? They’ll run you about 50 bucks.

The ‘Duck Dynasty’ Guys Have Some Interesting Thoughts About Vaginas And Buttholes And Gay People And Such

by Danger Guerrero

(via Getty Image)

So GQ sent Kissing Suzy Kolber co-founder Drew Magary down to Louisiana to shoot both crossbows and the sh*t with Phil Robertson and the rest of the crew behind A&E’s bighugemega hit Duck Dynasty. The whole thing is very much worth reading, as it does a nice job of getting to the whys and hows of the show’s confusing popularity (10+ million viewers per week, $200k per episode for the family), but we are in the business of cherry-picking quotes and highlighting them, and as far as cherry-picked quotes go, this one from Phil, the Bible-thumping family’s patriarch, is quite a doozy.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

You know, I don’t know if the National Council for Vagina Advancement is (a) real, or (b) looking for a snappy new catchphrase, but if it is and they are, they could do a lot worse than “Vaginas: There’s More There!”

Anyway, again, as a reminder, over 10 million viewers.

Artist Turns 4chan Against Itself With Selfies and Tits

by Rhett Jones
Artist Turns 4chan Against Itself With Selfies and Tits

“Come at me faggots.” That’s how 19-year-old Mary Bond invited 4chan’s infamous /b/ board to join in an insightful critique of her art project autodissociate.me“Been a long time since good camgirl thread,” an anonymous poster replied. This might seem like a pretty sad way to start a conversation, but it’s just par for the course on /b/.

Bond wanted to know how some of the most intentionally vile commenters on the internet would rate her art project. The results were often predictable…

…but taken together rendered some surprising insights.

4chan’s /b/ can be confusing. Mostly, it’s a place for angry, lonely young men to say offensive things and trade pictures that they consider funny, offensive or hot. (And child porn.)

They are known for anointing some teenage girls as “Chans” and praising them for posting pics and choosing random young women to fuck with via doxing, hacking, stalking and etc. This has resulted in more than one enduring mental breakdown. Sometimes, /b/ would go on unprovoked offensive, as in the infamous Jessi Slaughter case. That particular one ended in tears, a mental ward, foster care and a dead father.

Enter Mary Bond’s selfies. What you see at autodissociate.me is the third installment of an ongoing generative art project, incorporating written, sourced and randomized elements in a website format. Bond’s site background is a collage of selfies (taken by her collaborator Ian Aleksander Adams) overlayed with text throughout.

Here’s what she had to say when it launched:

During our Skype sessions, Ian takes screen caps of me and uploads them to the site. He’s technically capturing/curating the images, but I’m controlling the way I present myself. We’ve started calling ‘em ‘selfies once removed.’ It’s our way of exploring the idea of ‘dissociated’ selfies, which is relevant to my interests because I have Dissociative Identity Disorder. Selfies, believe it or not, have been very therapeutic for me.

At first, the overlaid text consisted of various copied and pasted musings from the internet on the topic of the self-styled self-portrait and her own musings. “I felt like it was important to demonstrate that its not just me writing it,” Bond wrote. “It’s more of a networked response or explanation.” It is being continuously updated with disjointed quotes, comments and snarky sub-tweet run-off.

The 4chan thread is where it got interesting.

While it’s easy to see this as some high level trolling, the gesture seems to be more along the lines of  “You sad lonely boys like to pick on sad lonely girls? Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?”

It’s very long. Here’s the tl;dr breakdown:

INVITATION TO DIALOGUE

The gauntlet has been thrown at the feet of /b/ and has been phrased in the native tongue of the species. From here, the /b/-tards proceed to fall into a handful of categories with their responses. They tend to be fairly repetitive, but here are some select classifications.

#1: THOSE DEDICATED TO CARRY ON WITH BUSINESS AS USUAL

These gentlemen have an m.o. and they’re sticking to it. But…

#2: THE WHITE KNIGHTS
(GENUINELY INTRIGUED OR PLAYING IT REAL SMOOTH)

(That commenter has it right.
He is a true anomaly among his tribe.)

3. SCATTERSHOT COMBINATION OF #1 AND #2

(These guys want to get in good while hedging their bets.)

#4: THEN THE INFIGHTING BEGAN

(With no true adversary they turn on each other.)

#5: THOSE ANGRY WITH THE RESULTING COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

You got that? This is gross social networking. The art project.

The representatives of this 5th category were the ones who actually made the project a success.

They couldn’t help themselves.

Bond came in with the simple instruction to come at her (and the clarification that she was looking for a critique).

These guys just couldn’t deal with their dark corner of the internet being invaded by a moving target. The notion that anything they said was perfectly correct and inline with the goals of the project drove them crazy, for this is the space where they are supposed to be able to say anything, but at the same time mutually recognize how offensive (edgy?) they are being.

THE 4CHAN THOUGHT PROCESS, APPROXIMATED

A: “I’m saying something offensive right now. Ha I said something offensive.”
B: “Ha right aren’t people stupid for being offended by shit. I exist in a moral grey zone where
nothing is true and everything is permitted.”
A: “lulz total fag shit, I read camus too faggot”
B: “lolololol I was totally making fun of philosophy fags like you. I bet you got raped and had to read philosophy to figure out why your asshole was bleeding. Way to get the reference cum sucker.”
A: “Ahh yes. We get each other. And we are both safe and warm.”

But Mary Bond’s intrusion by as a knowing adult (who is obviously setting them up) is bothersome. Whatever they say is fine and expected.

They are lab rats running the maze of their own banality: The only way out is to not say anything at all. But to not say anything at all would be a denial of their own self — this is where they are allowed to broadcast themselves!

This simply will not do, and who is this girl who thinks she can manipulate them into situations in which THEIR identity is at risk?

4chan is sort of what Albert “philosophy fag” Camus called “an absurd creation.”

If the world were clear, art would not exist. Absurd creation, of course, also must refrain from judging and from alluding to even the slightest shadow of hope.

A pretty succinct description of the dead-eyed nihilists on /b/. The factor that arises when participating in absurd creation (according to Camus):

One recognizes one’s course by discovering the paths that stray from it.

Bond put a fork in the road and #5s of /b/ didn’t like looking at the path they’d been walking — if for no other reason, because as they look around they see that their fellow travelers are either buying into this shit, literally jerking off, or parroting the same tired variations of “whore” and “faggot” insults as they are.

Or maybe not. It definitely seems that a few looked around and saw the sadness surrounding them for just a moment.

One comment seemed to acknowledge this in its own hateful way:

Yes, anonymous user. “Distain”(sic) indeed.

Bill Clinton’s Hacked Art, Annotated!

by Marina Galperina
Bill Clinton’s Hacked Art, Annotated!

Gawker may have gotten hacker Guccifer’s load of Bill Clinton’s alleged presidential doodles, but ANIMAL has your art analysis!

Previously, we spotted the Frida Kahlo influences in George W. Bush’s self-portraits at bath time (also hacked by Guccifer). This time, we got into Bill’s doodles (which you can see in the gallery above) and annotated the physical likenesses, possible contextual references and maybe even some artistic homages and influences. Let’s get started!

First up: Realism! Doodles they may be, but Bill’s genocidal Milosevic is rendered quite expressively — the pathetic jittering furrowing up of the eyebrows and fatty cheeks drooping off the sides of bowing pursed mouth. That’s most definitely his hairline. The devil-horned dragon is Bob Dole-ish, mostly in the facial crease and ear areas.

Bill then proceeds to free-associate all over these notes with the UN “FRY” cook and a dude with a bursting boner, perhaps riffing off those Viagra commercials Bob Dole was doing.

Bill’s snowflake-esque designs riddling the notes bear a dramatic likeness to the way Kurt Vonnegut repeatedly drew assholes in Breakfast of Champions (1973). Only Bill’s assholes are wrinklier and dirtier. Politics is a dirty business after all.

The disintegrating American Flag motifs instantly spark an association with Jasper Johns’ Flags, particularly this scribbly pencil and graphite Flag from 1958.

The incomplete forms repeat themselves, the flag’s stripes unraveling, spiraling and stacking on top of each other in a Duchamp Nude Descending a Staircase-type ordered chaos.

Some stars fade. Some stars are migrated into the safety of box-like containments, reminiscent of Piet Mondrian’s most minimal, satisfyingly-ordered formations — like this Composition in Black and White, with Double Lines (1934). Stars in the most complete renderings of flags turn into dirty, wrinkly assholes, perhaps suggesting Bill’s loss of faith in the American system as it stood at the time of the art-making.

Along with Duchampian geometrical shapes, we can also see that the undulating rays are actually tightly stacked, curved little lines. They are almost post-Impressionistic, nearly identical to the lines comprising Van Gogh’s studies for Cypresses in Starry Night in reed pen.

Maybe Bill just likes thinking about motorcycles, or maybe he’s tapping into a zeitgeist of American visual culture.

It could be a complete coincidence, but Bill’s stick-like tree and tire composition is strikingly similar to James Rosenquist’s Spokes (1978-79) complete with tire lines.

Not bad, Bill!

GETOUTOFYOURSKIN by Caterina Ciuffoletti

by L.

This fashion collection is a result of designer Caterina Ciuffoletti’s experimentation with the Nietzschean concept of the “Dionysian spirit,” which embodies man as he really is (man’s nature), vs. the “Apollonian spirit,” which is the idea of the social being (man’s ideal).

“I visualized the elementary side of the human anatomy and, as its antithesis, the images of Christian iconography. I molded these features into the figure of an iconic man dressed in his humanity, wearing the trinity-skull. The result is a variety of textures and effects, hand-cut silhouettes layered and draped.” Organic bone section prints, deconstructed coats, every element is based on the number 3.

Thanks

by bighappyfunhouse

Not everyone is spending this day with family and friends
If you are one of the people spending Thanksgiving alone, fear not
Take the time to cook yourself something good. Enjoy a beverage
Realize that you're the end result of a long line of humanity
The ones who were able to survive plagues, natural disasters
And your relatives could run faster than the predators (both real and imagined)
Thank them by living well
The thanks is right there before you
(no not that big ass steak and bottle of wine)
Live life like there is no tomorrow
Be well my friends

Mozart’s Mug Shot

by John VE

This picture is a facial composite of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, circa 1777, generated around 1991 (no later than 1992) by the Bundeskriminalamt Wiesbaden—the Federal Criminal Police Office of Wiesbaden, Germany—from four portraits that appeared during Mozart’s lifetime. The details on how or why they did this are scarce, unfortunately. In 1777 Mozart was twenty-one years old. (via Dangerous Minds)
