Both Sides: An Art Show Celebrating Heroes & Villains' With Dan Mumford & Jeff Boyes

Tomorrow night kicks off Gallery 1988’s Both Sides: An Art Show Celebrating Heroes & Villains featuring artwork by Dan Mumford and Jeff Boyes, two pop culture artists we’ve featured on the site previously. The show will also feature some “cameo” artwork from Ashton Gallagher, Chet Phillips, Clark Orr, Dave Quibble, Jeffrey Everett/Rockets are Red, Ryan Binkerhoff and Sam Gilbey. Hit the jump to get a preview of some of the artwork from the show.

I love the detail on the two Jeff Boyes Karate Kid prints. You haven’t seen these pieces until you’ve clicked on the close-up images of either of these prints, fantastic detailing.

Jeff Boyes Karate Kid and Back to the Future

I’m most curious about the Marty McFly Back to the Future print tease by Jeff Boyes in his shot of the screen printed and signed Daniel LaRusso piece (look at the top left of that image). I imagine that this, like the Karate Kid print, is part of a series which features one with the heroes and the other with the villains (Biff…etc). If so, I’m going to be spending a lot of money on Friday.

Official information from Gallery 1988:

Join us TOMORROW NIGHT from 7-10 PM at G1988 (West) for the opening of Both Sides, a show celebrating heroes & villains. The show features work from Jeff Boyes & Dan Mumford, with special appearances from other artists (including Sam Gilbey above). This exhibit is filled with great limited edition prints, make sure to check it out. Work will be available online Saturday afternoon.

Both Sides: An Art Show Celebrating Heroes & Villains opens Friday July 17th 2015 from 7-10pm at Gallery 1988 West Hollywood, located on 7308 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California.

John Cena Shows He Can Actually Improvise In This ‘Trainwreck’ Featurette

by Penn Collins

While John Cena has dabbled in the action fare typically done by wrestling stars, a featurette from the upcoming Trainwreck shows that he actually has some decent comedic chops on the spot. Maybe chalk it up to adlibbing in front of tens of thousands of wrestling fans. Or maybe, just maybe, John Cena is secretly a really funny guy. If so, let’s get him rounded up as the next Jonah Hill.

I’m sure Cena would love to be known as the next Jonah Hill. It’s a relief to know that someone with that many muscles can even maintain a sense of humor.

Entire ‘Back to The Future’ Trilogy Returning to Theaters in October for 30th Anniversary

by Ethan Anderton

Back to the Future trilogy in theaters

Just yesterday, we brought news of a new Blu-Ray release for the Back to the Future trilogy, including a set with the entire animated series from the 90s, for the first film’s 30th anniversary. Appropriately, the new Blu-Ray set arrives October 21st, 2015, the same day Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to the future in Back to the Future Part II.

It turns out that won’t be the only way you can celebrate the classic time travel trilogy, because buried in a press release for the new Blu-Ray set is word that the entire Back to the Future trilogy will also be returning to theaters that same day. And there’s another cool item fans will want to pick up this fall as well.

Find out more about the Back to the Future trilogy in theaters after the jump!

Since the release is still three months away, specifics on where the Back to the Future trilogy will be screening have not been revealed. The press release merely says to “Check local listings for show times,” so we’ll have to wait for more information on that front. But previously only the original film had been re-released for anniversary screenings, so this is pretty cool.

Something else we’ll have to wait for more details on is a new picture disc vinyl soundtrack release for Back to the Future, which will be available on October 16th. We’ll likely get to see the artwork for that as the release gets closer.

But if you’re really craving some Back to the Future this weekend, AMC is having a marathon of all three films in honor of the 30th anniversary. So if you’re one of those people who doesn’t own the movies for some reason, and you just like to watch them on television, then this Sunday, July 19th is your day. Here’s the schedule for the marathon on AMC this weekend:

SUNDAY, JULY 19th

“Back to the Future” at 11:00 a.m. ET/PT
Teenager Marty McFly is sent back in time to 1955, where meets his future parents in high school and accidentally becomes his mother’s romantic interest. Marty must repair the damage to history by causing his parents-to-be to fall in love, and with the help of eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Lloyd), he must find a way to return to 1985.

“Back to the Future II” at 1:30 p.m. ET/PT
McFly and Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown travel to 2015 to prevent McFly’s future son from ending up imprisoned. However, their presence allows Biff Tannen (Wilson) to steal Doc’s DeLorean time machine and travel to 1955, where he alters history by making his younger self wealthy.

“Back to the Future III” at 4:00 p.m. ET/PT
While stranded in 1955 during his time travel adventures, Marty McFly discovers that Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, trapped in 1885, was killed by Biff Tannen’s great-grandfather Buford. Marty decides to travel to 1885 to rescue Doc.

“Back to the Future” at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT
Encore showing.

All this leads up to the premiere of AMC’s new eight-part sci-fi drama series Humans, which will begin at 9pm Eastern that night. You can check out the trailer for that new series right here.

Otherwise, stay tuned for details on all the forthcoming Back to the Future 30th anniversary celebratory releases coming later this year (like the Hot Toys version of the DeLorean and Marty McFly from Back to the Future Part II). As a huge fan of the trilogy, I know I’ll be on the lookout for whatever I can get my hands on.

Anthony Bourdain Called Guy Fieri A Douche!

by Penn Collins

Glass house resident Anthony Bourdain recently had some choice words in an interview with Atlanta Magazine about “colorful” Food Network personality Guy Fieri. Going very much on-the-record, the former chef turned TV personality accused the other former chef turned TV personality of some mental distress as demonstrated by his fashion sense.

More specifically, he said, “So I sort of feel in a heartfelt way for Guy. I wonder about him. He’s 52 years old and still rolling around in the flame outfit … What does he do? How does Guy Fieri de-douche?”

Strong words from the arbiter of cool and credibility, who’s currently on his fifth travel show. Guy Fieri is also 47, not 52, but that really doesn’t excuse the outfits any more.

Anthony Bourdain, not being able to resist taking another barb, of course said that Man vs. Food would make Middle Eastern people want to join ISIS. Really.

Apparently, when Return of the Jedi was first on the drawing board, the geniuses of ILM attempted to create the Rancor as a full monster suit someone could wear. They did not succeed, and a puppet/model was used in the film. Do you see where this is going?

8 Amazing Volcano Vacations

by Miss Cellania
Corey

Anyone interested?

Earth’s most furious mountains are also the most rewarding to visit.

Have you hugged a volcano lately? You should. Although we commonly perceive them as lava-spewing cones of doom, humans probably wouldn’t be here without them. Roughly 2.5 billion years ago, underwater volcanoes breached the ocean’s surface and began emitting gases like steam, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen into the air: These became the building blocks of a life-supporting atmosphere. When all that carbon dioxide dissolved into the oceans, simple cyanobacteria— which possibly evolved thanks to underwater volcanoes called black smokers—gobbled it up and released an important by-product: oxygen. So, it seems humanity owes volcanoes a debt of gratitude.

And in a way, we’ve already thanked them. Ancient cultures turned these mountains into gods and goddesses, like Vulcan, Hephaestus, and Pele. We still worship them today, but mainly by vacationing in their shadows. About 1,500 potentially active volcanoes dot the globe, each one a unique source of wonder.

1. SAKURAJIMA

Kyushu, Japan

Ash billows daily from Japan’s Sakurajima, which is so active that authorities prohibit anyone from climbing it. Sakurajima’s activity often causes “dirty thunderstorms.” When the mountain throws a tantrum, lava and rock fragments spew into the air, colliding and creating electric charges. The result? Lightning bolts streaking over an erupting cone.

2. COTOPAXI

Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador’s second highest peak hasn’t erupted for decades. That’s made Cotopaxi popular with a diverse set of adventurers, namely climbers, skiiers, and... bird-watchers. That’s partially the fault of the Ecuadorian Hillstar, a rugged species of hummingbird, that likes hanging out there.

3. PACAYA

Escuintla, Guatemala

Guatemala’s Pacaya is a popular tourist draw, despite the fact that it erupts with some frequency (it last blew its lid this past spring!). Volcano diehards can go on day hikes from nearby Antigua or Guatemala City and walk close enough to the lava to poke a stick in it.

4. VILLARRICA

Villarrica, Chile

It takes about four hours to hike to the lip of Chile’s Villarrica, one of only five volcanoes worldwide with a lava lake in its crater. Adventurers enjoy the mountain shaking beneath their feet and can explore empty lava tubes, where molten rock left behind wormlike caves. Alternatively, you can bungee jump out of a helicopter straight into its caldera. Your choice!

5. MOUNT ETNA

Sicily, Italy

Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily is also the birthplace of volcanology. Etna inspired the Greek philosopher Empedocles to divide the world into four elements: earth, wind, water, and fire. Although Empedocles was the first person to study volcanoes, he met a rather unscientific end when he tested a weak hypothesis: He jumped into Etna’s fiery crater to prove his immortality.

6. MOUNT MAYON

Luzon, Philippines

Mount Mayon is the Philippines’ most active volcano and probably the easiest to paint—the smoking cone is almost perfectly symmetrical. But good looks can be deceiving. In 1814, Mayon erupted, followed by Mount Tambora in Indonesia the next year. The two belched so much ash into the atmosphere that, in 1816, temperatures plummeted worldwide. In New England, snow fell as late as August, and people called it the Year Without a Summer.

7. CERRO NEGRO

León, Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan city of León is surrounded by 11 volcanoes. Cerro Negro attracts the youngest crowd: It’s the world’s best place for volcano surfing. Riders coast down the black ash—which is actually sharp as nails—at speeds up to 50 mph!

8. EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL

Iceland

Remember when this geological boil halted air traffic over Europe in 2010? Well, today you can take helicopter rides over the scarred, blackened remains of Eyjafjal- lajökull [eye-a-fyat-la-jo-kuhl], Iceland.

John Smoltz says Mets' pitchers are 'way better' than Braves' pitching of the 1990s

by Kate Feldman

High praise from a member of one of the best starting rotations in baseball history.

For most baseball fans, casual or otherwise, the Braves' pitching of the 1990s is the stuff of legends. Even today, the rotation, which included Hall of Famers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux and soon-to-be Hall of Famer John Smoltz, is spoken of in hushed, reverent tones. Dreams of replicating that magic were exactly that: a dream. But at least one person thinks the Mets have some magic of their own.

"They're way better," Smoltz told the New York Daily News when asked how the Amazin's rotation matches up. "They've got more talent than we could ever have."

This year, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, and Noah Syndergaard have been godsends for an offensive-deficient Mets team. Steven Matz showed flashes of brilliance in his two starts before he went on the disabled list with a lat tear. Zack Wheeler, out for this year and part of next year after Tommy John surgery, was off to a fast start. Seemingly constant injuries make it feel like Mets fans may never see these five on a mound together, but even the possibility gives you chills.

Statistics are practically impossible to compare; of the Mets, only Wheeler has completed a full season. Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz pitched together for almost a decade, dominating the NL East. But the Mets' pitchers are young and have time under club control to become the Five Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

It's been a long season, and it's only halfway done. Wheeler likely won't be back until the All-Star Break next year. But just think about it, Mets fans. Can you feel the goosebumps?

Classic Movie Posters Starring Action Figures

Toy customizer Dan Polydoris, whose work we've spotlighted before, has now reimagined some of our favorite new-classic genre films, with their posters now starring the denizens of his toy box. Some are funnier than others, but I imagine at least one will get a laugh. Me, I'm wondering how Snake Eyes performs an exorcism when he never speaks.

Jacob deGrom strikes out side in dominant All-Star Game appearance

by Lukas Vlahos

deGrom needed just ten pitches in to complete his inning.

Jacob deGrom made it into the All-Star Game, entering in the sixth with the National League trailing 3-1. He proceeded to pitch arguably the best single inning in All-Star Game history, striking out the side on just ten pitches. No pitcher had ever struck out three batters on ten pitches or fewer in the midsummer exhibition. A two-strike ball to Jason Kipnis was the only flaw preventing an immaculate inning from deGrom.

.@JdeGrom19’s line: #whiff, #whiff, #whiff. @Headshoulders pic.twitter.com/oGffUmciq2

— MLB (@MLB) July 15, 2015

The inning started with Stephen Vogt (162 wRC+ against RHP this year). deGrom painted the corner twice to get ahead 0-2, then promptly blew Vogt away with a high fastball. Next up was Jason Kipnis (179 wRC+, 12.3% strikeout rate against RHP). deGrom again got ahead 0-2 with two fastballs on the corner. He then left a fastball outside before striking out Kipnis again with another fastball. Last up was Jose Iglesias (9.5% strikeout rate), entering the game for Alcides Escobar. deGrom got him to swing and miss at a fastball before throwing two consecutive curve balls for swinging strikes to end the at bat.

While the trio he faced was hardly murderers' row, Vogt and Kipnis absolutely mash righties and Iglesias is one of the hardest strikeouts in the game. deGrom managed to make them all look silly.

Video: Finally A Yoda Toy That Can Kick Your Ass! [Comic Con 2015]

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

So sweet.

Star Wars Legendary Yoda From Spinmaster

Imagine Jedi master Yoda in an intense lightsaber battle, like the one we saw in Attack of the Clones. Now imagine that energy in toy form, teaching kids to become young Jedi and showcasing his insane Jedi lightsaber skills. Finally there is a Yoda toy that will kick your ass, and it is Spinmaster’s Star Wars Legendary Yoda.

This is one of those gems that I happened to walk past as I wandered the Comic Con show floor on preview night, and it stopped me in my tracks. I remember having a Furby-style Yoda toy that had an animatronic face with moving eyes and mouth which could interact with you. This is like that on crack. Not only will it interact with you and respond to your questions and commands, but it will show off his lightsaber skills, swirling around your floor and table while yelling his deadly blade of light.

Demo Of Spinmaster’s Star Wars Legendary Yoda From Comic Con 2015

As you can see in the video demo, Legendary Yoda stands at 16.5 inches tall and will perform a variety of movements and responses based on what phrase you speak to it. For example, If you tell Yoda that you’re “ready to train, master Yoda,” the toy will ignite his lightsaber and proceeds to demonstrate his lightsaber sparing. You can ask Yoda questions or demonstrate your force push with the Jedi master.

Spinmaster will release Star Wars Legendary Yoda for $179.99 on September 4th 2015, otherwise known as “Force Friday” – the date that all the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys will be unleashed worldwide. I’ve heard Spinmaster is also working on other Star Wars characters (please give us an even better R2-D2 than the interactive droid that is already available). I want to imagine a day when two Star Wars Legends figures can have a lightsaber battle together. The figure is powered by 8 motors and 115 phrases.

Confirmed: Simon Pegg Is In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ [Comic-Con 2015]

by Germain Lussier
Corey

Even though I like him, part of me doesn't really like Star Wars and Star Trek sharing actors and directors and whatnot. A really geeky complaint, but it is how I feel.

SimonPeggPaul

UPDATE: We can now confirm Simon Pegg will indeed be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — but as we speculated earlier, his face won’t be. A behind-the-scenes reel shown at Comic-Con 2015 showed Pegg on set, and wearing an alien costume without the head. So we’ll definitely see him in the movie, but we likely won’t be able to recognize him. It’s not even clear if we’ll hear his voice.

The original story from July 29, 2014 follows.

Simon Pegg won’t appear in Star Wars Episode VII, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be part of the film in some other way. In a recent interview, Pegg continued to say what he’s always said about the film. He’s a huge fan, he’s friends with writer director J.J. Abrams, he’s visited the set, but him appearing would take people out of the movie. So he continues to say he won’t be on screen in Episode VII. But he also won’t, and hasn’t, said that he’s not in the movie at all, which is now leading to speculation the Shaun of the Dead actor might provide some kind of voice or performance capture where his face wouldn’t be an issue.

Follow the Simon Pegg Star Wars mystery below.

This latest round of Simon Pegg Star Wars talk began at Comic Con where Benedict Cumberbatch spoke to MTV.

If you don’t want to watch the video, here’s the quote. Cumberbatch was asked if he and J.J. Abrams discussed him being in Star Wars and if it came close.

J.J. and I are friends, so yeah, possibly. But I think J.J. is very good at creating something original out of something known, and I think apart from his continuing use of Simon Pegg — and who can blame him, frankly — it made sense not to do it.

Cumberbatch also didn’t rule out never being in any Star Wars film, he’s just not in this one.

Back to Pegg though, those comments make it sound like he’s in the movie, right? So Vulture asked Pegg about them directly. He acknowledged that Cumberbatch said the above thing and added this:

Well, J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends. I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face. The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.

That’s not an answer. So the report followed up directly, “So you’re not in the movie?” His response, quoted from their site.

[Smiles.] Of course I visited the set. It’s amazing, and I love Star Wars. I want to see everything happening. It looks wonderful, and you need to believe those characters. Any type of stunt casting might just pop you out of the movie.

Again, he specifically avoided answering the question. Why? Two possible reasons. One, he’s in the movie and doesn’t want to lie. Remember Pegg famously denied Kahn was in Star Trek Into Darkness and will never live that down. Or two, because he knows keeping the answer vague results in articles like this one.

As a Star Wars fan, I’d love for Pegg to show up in some small role. The guy is an uber fan, great actor, and he could certainly add something without appearing and taking people out of the movie. Plus, he’s providing a voice for the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars show.

But did he do something for Episode VII? We’ll have to wait an see.

What do you think of this latest episode in the Simon Pegg Star Wars saga?

‘Show Me a Hero’ Trailer: Oscar Isaac Stars in ‘The Wire’ Creator’s New HBO Miniseries

by Angie Han
Corey

Looks good.

Show Me a Hero

On the cusp of his biggest movie role yet, Oscar Isaac is making his first major foray into television. Isaac stars in Show Me a Hero, a new miniseries by The Wire creator David Simon and Crash director Paul Haggis, as real-life Yonkers, New York mayor Nick Wasicsko.

When a federal court demands that the city build low-income housing units within the city’s wealthier white neighborhoods, the city threatens to tear itself apart, and destroy Nick in the process. Catherine KeenerAlfred MolinaWinona RyderLaTanya Richardson-JacksonBob Balaban, and Jim Belushi also star. Watch the Show Me a Hero trailer after the jump.

HBO unveiled the Show Me a Hero trailer on YouTube.

Show Me a Hero debuts Sunday, August 16 on HBO with two episodes. The miniseries will consist of six episodes in total.

From creator David Simon (‘Treme’ and ‘The Wire’) and director Paul Haggis (‘Crash’), and based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Lisa Belkin, this six-part miniseries explores notions of home, race and community through the lives of elected officials, bureaucrats, activists and ordinary citizens in Yonkers, NY.

In an America generations removed from the greatest civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the young mayor (Oscar Isaac) of a mid-sized American city is faced with a federal court order that says he must build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. His attempt to do so tears the entire city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys the mayor and his political future.

In addition to Oscar Isaac, ‘Show Me a Hero’ stars Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Bob Balaban and Jim Belushi. Directed by Paul Haggis; written by David Simon and William F. Zorzi; executive produced by David Simon, Nina K. Noble, Paul Haggis, Gail Mutrux and William F. Zorzi.

‘Fargo’ Season 2 Trailer: Gunshots, Beatings, and a Chocolate Glaze

by Angie Han

Fargo Season 2 trailer

After setting the mood with a series of cryptic teasers, Fargo Season 2 has finally dropped its first real trailer. Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, Jeffrey Donovan, and more show up to tease the new season, which promises the same delightful mix of chilly weather, jarring violence, dry humor, and Minnesota nice that made the first one such a hit.

Watch the Fargo Season 2 trailer after the jump.

FX dropped the Fargo Season 2 trailer on YouTube.

“The whole world… we’re just out of balance,” muses Lou. Fargo Season 2 is expected to deal with the uneasiness of the post-Vietnam War era, including the encroaching economic recession and the rising feminist issues. A pre-White House Ronald Reagan is one of the characters, and he’ll be played by Bruce Campbell.

Although Fargo is an anthology series, with a whole new cast this season, Season 2 connects to Season 1 through the Solverson family. Molly’s dad Lou, who was played by Keith Carradine in Season 1, is played here by Patrick Wilson, and the story concerns his attempts to solve a case involving rival crime organizations.

Here’s the lengthy and detailed Season 2 synopsis:

The all new “true crime” case of Fargo’s new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota, where a young State Police Officer “Lou Solverson” (Wilson), recently back from Vietnam, investigates a case involving a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate. Helping him piece things together is his father-in-law, “Sheriff Hank Larsson” (Danson). The investigation will lead them to a colorful cast of characters that includes “Karl Weathers” (Nick Offerman), the town lawyer of Luverne, Minnesota. A Korean War vet, Karl is a flowery drunk blessed with the gift of gab and the eloquence of a true con artist. Three-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett will play “Joe Bulo,” the front man for the northern expansion of a Kansas City crime syndicate. The new face of corporate crime, Joe’s bringing a Walmart mentality to small town America. His number two is “Mike Milligan” (Bokeem Woodbine). Part enforcer, part detective, Mike is always smiling – but the joke is usually on you. Bulo and his crew have their sights set on the Gerhardt crime family in Fargo, currently led by matriarch “Floyd Gerhardt” (Smart). With her husband at death’s door, Floyd takes over the family business, frustrating her eldest son, “Dodd Gerhardt” (Jeffrey Donovan). An impatient hothead with a cruel streak to match his ambitions, Dodd can’t wait for both his parents to die so he can take over and expand their business from kingdom to empire.“Bear Gerhardt” (Angus Sampson) is the middle son, an intimidatingly large man who, although inarticulate, is the most decent of his clan. “Rye Gerhardt” (Kieran Culkin), the youngest of the Gerhardt clan, views himself as a big shot, but in reality he’s just a small dog who barks big.

Fargo Season 2 premieres in September.

15 Things I Noticed in the ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Trailer

by Peter Sciretta

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Zack Snyder showed up at San Diego Comic Con International 2015 with a new trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now that we’ve had time to settle down after returning from the madness that is Hall H, lets take a look at the new trailer and see what we can learn from the individual frame grabs in our Batman V Superman trailer breakdown.

Batman V Superman Trailer Breakdown

First of all, if you haven’t seen the new Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer which premiered at Comic Con, go watch it now and come back for this breakdown.

A US Senate Subcommittee Has It Out For Superman

The trailer opens with Holly Hunter, who plays a US Senator in the film. She is speaking to an audience, and proclaims “Today is a day for truth.” Superman walks into the hearing, as Holly Hunter’s voice over continues: “We need to know what happened, and to know what he stands for. That kind of power, can be very dangerous.” … “Let the record show that this committee holds him responsible”

But Does The Senator Have Ulterior Motives?

Later in the trailer we see the same Senator character visiting Lex Luthor (Jessie Eisenberg) at one of his homes. Has Lex Luthor paid the Senator off? He tells her “You know the oldest lie in America Senator? Devils don’t come from the ground beneath us, they come from the sky.”

Humans Protest Our New Alien Citizen

We then see Superman drop from the sky to the US capitol to appear in front of the senate. There are a lot of signs to look at in this image, including “tell us the truth about aliens”, “Superman = illegal alien”, “This is our world, not yours”, “Earth belongs to humans”, “Aliens doom nations”. And there are a couple pro-Superman signs, like the “Share the planet” on the bottom right.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

My two favorite signs are the “God Hates Aliens” sign, which is clearly a parody of or reference to the horrible Westboro Baptist Church (the production even put a color gradient on the sign, like the Westboro sign seen below), and also the sign that says “Superman Lives.” The latter seems to be an easter egg for fans, a reference to the failed Tim Burton Superman film which would have starred Nicolas Cage.

Wayne Manor Has Become Decrepit

We see a shot of a man (Bruce?) walking through overgrown grass to a decrepit old brick building with boarded windows. We had heard during filming that Wayne Manor would be presented in this way, but why?  Could the Wayne fortune be long dried up? Maybe Bruce left the mansion after the death of his parents or… someone else?

Bruce Wayne Is Personally and Professionally Affected By Superman’s Metropolis Destruction

We cut to a flashback of the Superman vs. Zod fight that leveled many of the buildings in Metropolis. Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne runs through the streets. He looks up while on the phone and screams. The building in front of him is being destroyed in the attack. Who is Bruce Wayne on the phone with?

Onlookers watch as one of the alien combatants flies out of the building, which begins to crumble and fall.

Bruce Wayne runs through the streets to a cloud of dust reminiscent of 9/11. He runs into it looking for something, someone.

We see him hugging a little girl as he looks up at the skies with a very angry look.

We pull back to reveal that he is in the rubble of Wayne Financial building. Is Bruce Wayne only angry about the destruction of his bank building, or were there more personal casualties?

Later in the trailer we see Bruce Wayne open an anonymous piece of mail, and inside is a photocopy of an article in The Daily Planet. While that might be Metropolis’ newspaper, where Clark Kent and Lois Lane work, the article is penned by Brad Elliott, a random staff writer. The headline reads “WAYNE TOWER DEVASTATED” with the subheading “Dozens Killed.” But more importantly is the message written on the photocopy, “YOU LET YOUR FAMILY DIE” written crazily in red pen.

Does this mean that Bruce Wayne had kids or other family members that died in the destruction in Metropolis? Or is this anonymous source talking about a previous incident — remember Wayne’s parents were murdered right in front of him as a kid. We remember this because we’ve seen it a bunch of times before, so no reason to film that again for this new reboot, right? Oh no, looks like Zack Snyder did…

‘The Man in the High Castle’ Trailer: Amazon Brings the Philip K. Dick Novel to Series

by Russ Fischer

Man in the High Castle trailer

Amazon is taking viewers to an America run by Nazis. The streaming service has moved forward with a series adaptation of Philip K. Dick‘s novel The Man in the High Castle, which depicts North America in the wake of an Axis win during World War II. In the story, land west of the Rockies is occupied by the Japanese; east of the Rockies belongs to Germany. The characters are drawn from all corners of the scenario: resistance fighters, people just trying to make their way in the world, German and Japanese officials, and spies.

Now there’s a new Man in the High Castle trailer, showing off some of the fresh footage for episodes beyond the pilot.

Amazon never released much of a trailer for the pilot, so some of this footage is from that first episode, though a lot of what you’ll see here is new. The weakness of the pilot was character, while its great strength was the setting and overall world. That strength is a lot of what you’ll see here in this trailer, too. The image of an American flag with the swastika branded where the state stars should be is quite arresting.

That trailer highlights one of the big changes from the book, which anyone who saw the pilot has already seen. In the original novel, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy is a revolutionary book that depicts life more or less as we know it — an America ruled by Americans. It’s a book that gives the characters hope.

Here, that document is a film. It’s a potentially canny change that makes its contents easier to show us, the viewers, but also turns the document into something that can’t be passed along and picked up as easily as the book in Dick’s original novel. That change is one of the elements we’re most curious to see played out in the series when further episodes debut.

Trailer via Amazon.

Based on Philip K. Dick’s award-winning novel, and executive produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), The Man in the High Castle explores what it would be like if the Allied Powers had lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. Starring Rufus Sewell (John Adams), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars) and Alexa Davalos (Mob City).

Angry Mets fans take over #AskManfred hashtag on Twitter

by Steve Schreiber

Frustrated Mets fans have turned a Rob Manfred Q&A hashtag on Twitter into an airing of grievances about the Wilpon family's ownership of the team.

New York Mets fans are angry thanks to six consecutive seasons under .500 and nearly a decade without a playoff appearance since their last in 2006. Thanks to the Bernie Madoff scandal, Mets ownership continues to run a team that plays in the biggest city in the world like a small market organization despite the blessing of previous commissioner Bud Selig and current commissioner Rob Manfred. While the Mets have done a good job developing young pitching over the last few years, this is clearly a flawed roster with large holes that could've been filled had ownership made available the proper funds over the past five years.

When it was announced that commissioner Manfred would be taking questions to answer at MLB's Town Hall meeting during the All-Star break in Cincinnati, Mets fans acted and swiftly took over the hashtag #AskManfred on Twitter. They began swinging away at him and it appears they've done more damage than the Mets' starting lineup is capable of doing. Let's look in and see what Mets fans have to say about the Wilpons and the organization's frugality over the past half-decade:

Wow, that is a lot of anger. And since this group of tweets was compiled, there have been plenty more added to the pile. Will this do anything? Probably not. But Mets fan frustration is high and it's only natural to want the opportunity to channel that outward. I know I certainly wouldn't blame them if I was on the outside looking in. Now please, Mr. Manfred. It's time for you to reconsider your stance on Mets ownership.
