Shikaka - The Sound Of One Man Solving Pet Related Crimes

by Zeon Santos

Shikaka by Mos T-Shirts

He didn't earn the title "Ace" by solving all kinds of pet murder cases and making the world a safer place for petkind. No, Ace is actually his name, but you can call him Mr. Ventura if you're nasty. Ace Ventura is the leading authority on pet related crimes in Miami, Florida, but that doesn't mean he's a two-dimensional dude. For there's a lot more to Ace's life than just pet rescue- he's a master impressionist, fashion consultant for Don Ho's band, and one heck of a good dancer thanks to the lessons he received from a cockatoo he once rescued from the jaws of a hungry crocodile. And when you hear someone yelling "Shikaka!" you know that's Ace coming to turn the place upside down!

Get wild with your wardrobe by bringing home this Skikaka t-shirt by Mos T-Shirts, it's way more comfortable than a Hawaiian shirt and it's sure to inspire people to show you their best Ace Ventura impressions!

GIFs of Life in Zero-Gee Almost Make Space Look Fun

by Maddie Stone on Gizmodo, shared by Maddie Stone to io9

Being an astronaut may sound glamorous, but for the most part, life in space is utter tedium—checking systems logs, labeling test tubes for routine science experiments. Not to mention the fact that simple things like using the toilet and running on a treadmill require monk-like patience and bungee cords.

A Sumo Wrestler Footrace

by Zeon Santos

Sumo wrestlers must be strong enough to push another wrestler their size across the ring, sturdy enough to take some physical abuse when they bump bellies, and heavy enough to hold their ground.

But the art of Sumo has little to nothing to do with distance running, so watching sumo wrestlers take to the track in a footrace is truly a sight to behold.

(YouTube Link)

The sumo wrestlers are surprisingly light on their feet, but this video feels incomplete without the Benny Hill song playing in the background.

Super Troopers 2 Is Being Made Right Meow

by Nate Saienni

super-troopers-2-time-is-meow

Production has officially started for the sequel to the 2001 cult comedy hit Super Troopers, according to Coming Soon. Mustache rides for everyone! A sequel has been rumoured for years so it’s relieving and exciting news for fans of the wildest cops in Vermont that the original members of Broken Lizard are re-uniting with Jay Chandrasekhar sitting in the director’s chair once more. Even more, set photos posted from various members’ Instagram and Twitter accounts are proof that the group is back in business, shooting in a location just outside of Boston, Massachussets.

While a sequel has been trying to get off the ground for some considerable time now, it wasn’t until the tremendously successful Indiegogo campaign this past spring that the production ball really got rolling. The guys behind Broken Lizard- Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske, and Paul Soter, started the campaign with an initial goal of $2m and the stipulation that production could only move forward with that amount or more. Within 24 hours however, donations were up to $4.5m, sealing the deal on getting the project officially started.

It was revealed in 2009 that the plot of the sequel would take place just a few months after the original Super Troopers, revolving around a new highway patrol assignment somewhere around the Canadian border. Considering that was six years ago, it’s unsure whether that plot remains the same or if script changes were made. In addition, there is no official release date yet but sometime in 2016 would be a likely possibility. Nonetheless, it’s welcomed news that the comedy group has started shooting and it’s a welcomed sight seeing them back to their old shenanigans.

Ricky Gervais Confirmed to Host Golden Globes a Fourth Time in 2016

by Angie Han

Ricky Gervais Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have repeatedly stated that the 2015 Golden Globes would be their last time hosting, so the HFPA has gone and dug up another recent emcee for next year’s ceremony. Ricky Gervais will be back to host the 2016 Golden Globes, following a three-year stint from 2010 to 2012. More on the Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2016 news after the jump.

The HFPA has officially announced Gervais will host the ceremony taking place Sunday, January 10, 2016. The news comes just days after the Academy confirmed Chris Rock, who hosted the 2005 Oscars, would preside over the 2016 ceremony.

Psssst! #HesBack #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/KqBIsVMkQt

— Golden Globe Awards (@goldenglobes) October 26, 2015

Gervais’ return comes after three consecutive years (2013, 2014, 2015) of Fey and Poehler as the Globes emcees. Following his last turn as host in 2012, Gervais publicly insisted he would not host again. Then again, Gervais also said the same thing in 2011 only to find himself back onstage the following year.

His three previous performances as host were marked by his barbed sense of humor. Some enjoyed watching Gervais take Hollywood down a peg, while others (including the HFPA’s then-president Phillip Berk) felt Gervais had “crossed the line.” In short, prepare yourself for a thousand “Did Ricky Gervais go too far?” thinkpieces come Monday, January 11.

But either time heals all wounds, or Gervais’ knack for creating viral moments does. “Tina and Amy are a hard act to follow but Ricky is completely fearless and entirely up for the job,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of alternative and late-night programming. “His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats,” added HFPA president Lorenzo Soria.

Having a host at all is a relatively recent development for the Globes. When Gervais made his debut in 2010, he was the first person to host the ceremony since John Larroquette and Janine Turner became the first-ever hosts in 1995.

While we wait for Gervais’ return to the stage, revisit his appearance at the 2015 Golden Globes hosted by Fey and Poehler.

The 25 best horror movies since 20005. 28 Days LaterDanny Boyle...

The 25 best horror movies since 2000

5. 28 Days Later

Danny Boyle shot fast and furious with digital video to capture beautiful lo-fi visions of a post-apocalyptic London and beyond. Horror overtones echo throughout Boyle’s career, from Shallow Grave andTrainspotting to Sunshine and 127 Hours; in 28 Days Later, his talent for intensity boiling over into insanity comes through as loud and clear as it ever has.

4. The House Of The Devil

It’s a deliberate throwback to the low-budget, deliberately paced horror movies of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The House Of The Devil illustrates Ti West’s devotion to getting the details perfectly right, both in the film itself and in the way it was marketed. He doesn’t just honor his oft-disreputable inspirations. In many ways, he tops them.

3. The Babadook

The scares kick in early, when Sam has his mom read a prescient pop-up book about a looming creature that they then “can’t get rid of.” Really, though, Amelia’s been dealing with demons since before the opening credits: haunted by guilt over surviving her husband, and sick with worry that their weird child will be a burden to someone for the rest of his life. This is a deeply unsettling film about what happens to horror movie victims when they don’t die, but can’t escape.

2. It Follows

Is it too soon to call It Follows one of the great horror movies of the new millennium? Though it crept into theaters just a few months ago, David Robert Mitchell’s fledgling fright flick already feels like a classic of the genre, something we’ll be watching between fingers for years to come.

LOL: Jimmy Kimmel Presents ‘Do the Right Thing 2: Do the White Thing’

by Ethan Anderton

Do the Right Thing 2

It’s been 26 years since Spike Lee‘s provocative Do the Right Thing debuted, and since Hollywood has been digging deep into the past for sequels, reboots and remakes, it only makes sense that they would revive the racially charged drama.

However, in case you haven’t noticed, Brooklyn has changed a lot since 1989. As Jimmy Kimmel noted during one of his episodes being taped in New York last week, “There used to be muggers right in this neighborhood stealing old ladies’ purses. Now those old lady purses are being worn ironically by hipsters in the area.” And that’s exactly what inspired the trailer for Do the Right Thing 2, starring Billy Crudup, Zooey Deschanel and more white people.

Here’s the trailer for Do the Right Thing 2: Do the White Thing from Jimmy Kimmel Live:

Racial tension, prejudice, fighting and rioting aren’t at the center of Do the Right Thing 2, but trendier issues such as water conservation, full beards and gluten free pizza.

Whoever shot this funny short got the energetic camera movement and style just right, adding some credibility to the parody. And kudos to the creators for getting Rosie Perez to recreate that ice cube scene (with Crudup sitting in for Spike Lee as Mookie), as well as introducing us to Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) as Vinyl Raheem.

By the way, if this parody is going over your heads because you haven’t seen Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (one of Jacob Hall’s favorite movies of all time), then stop what you’re doing and rent it as soon as possible. It’s Spike Lee’s best movie, and on a more serious note, it has a story that is sadly just as relevant today as it was back in 1989.

Thankfully, its relevance today doesn’t really warrant a sequel being made, even though some pranksters have convinced some New Yorkers that one may be in production. For what it’s worth, Red Hook Summer is a spiritual sequel to the movie, but it’s just nowhere near as good as its predecessor.

‘Band of Robbers’ Trailer: Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn Are All Grown Up and Still Up to No Good

by Angie Han

Band of Robbers trailer

It’s been well over a century since Mark Twain first released Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn into the world of American literature, but their youthful spirit rages on in the first trailer for Band of Robbers. Written and directed by Adam and Aaron Nee, the indie film reimagines the classic all-American rascals as grown-up men in the modern day.

Huck (Kyle Gallner), fresh out of prison, is trying to go straight, but Tom (Adam Nee), now a crooked cop, drags him into a plot to find the treasure that eluded them in childhood. Other classic characters like Injun Joe (Stephen Lang) and Becky Thatcher (Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist) also appear. Watch the Band of Robbers trailer after the jump.

The Band of Robbers trailer dropped on YouTube.

Band of Robbers has flown mostly under the radar, but it did pick up some solid reviews after its Los Angeles Film Festival premiere this summer. Indiewire described it as “a thinking man’s Superbad,” complete with “laugh-out-loud moments and thoughtful realizations about young manhood,” while The Playlist praised its “a killer premise, polished direction, and a tone as though Anton Chigurh sauntered into Bottle Rocket.”

Gravitas Ventures has Band of Robbers in select theaters and VOD on January 15, 2016. Here’s a synopsis from the LA Film Fest.

Mark Twain’s young heroes Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn spring vividly back to life, this time as modern-day grown men. When Huck is released from prison he hopes to leave his criminal past behind. But his lifelong friend and corrupt cop, Tom, has other plans, having formed the Band of Robbers, a group of misfits dedicated to locating the hidden treasure that eluded the boys in childhood.

Twain aficionados will find myriad references to their beloved characters, but the film stands on its own as a story about two well-intentioned heroes refusing to bid their childhoods goodbye. Charming and hilarious, the Nee brothers make a winning directorial team in this old-fashioned Boys’ Own yarn thrown headlong into the present day.

Billy Joel plays "Meet the Mets" during October 21 show at Madison Square Garden

by Steve Schreiber

Everybody loves the Mets these days, even the Piano Man!

After so many years of experience, the Piano Man knows how to cater to his audience and put them into a New York State of Mind. While the Mets were acting like a Big Shot, in the midst of sweeping away the Cubs for the National League pennant on Wednesday night, Billy Joel was playing a show in front of a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden on his Baby Grand. Knowing how many fans were likely in his audience and missing this crucial game of the series, The Entertainer broke into a rendition of Meet the Mets while some of the game played on the MSG scoreboard.

Of course, Mets fans remember when Joel performed the final concerts at Shea Stadium, entitled "Last Play at Shea" back in 2008, as they were Movin' Out to Citi Field. In all Honesty, I'm under Pressure to get as many Billy Joel references in here as possible, so excuse my Shameless extending of this piece. After all, from Billy, I've learned that You're Only Human. And so it goes.

And so it goes.

The Mets Show Their Superpowers

by Midtown Comics

Mets Superheroes comics

As the New York Mets fight to enter the World Series, they’re no longer being viewed by some fans as just another sports team – they’re being viewed as a superhero sports team! With two of the team’s fan-favorite pitchers taking superhero names – Dark Knight and Thor – some fans are having fun thinking about which Marvel and DC heroes the other athletes can represent. Well, Monkeys Fighting Robots took time to match the rest of the team with appropriate heroes, so we want to share some extra commentary on the site’s picks!

Matt Harvey: The Dark Knight

Dark Knight Batman comics Mets

Instead of striking fear into his opponents, Matt Harvey simply throws strikes. The Mets’ pitcher may not have a cape and cowl or some batarangs, but he’s proudly sporting the blue and orange as he throws baseballs with incredible accuracy – a feat that Batman himself would be proud of. In the DC universe, bad guys fear Batman. In our world, batters fear our version of the Dark Knight: Matt Harvey.

Noah Syndergaard: Thor

Thor Mets comics marvel

He’s tall. He has long, blond hair. And he has one heck of a throwing arm. No, we’re not talking about the God of Thunder – we’re talking about Noah Syndergaard! The physical parralels are obvious, and the pitcher’s ability to throw a ball reminds fans of the way Thor throws his hammer with amazing force at his enemies. Fun fact: you can even use the letters in his last name to spell “Asgard”. Coincidence? We think not!

Curtis Granderson: Flash

Flash comics DC

What good is an outfielder if they aren’t swift? Thanks to his superhuman speed and reflexes, Curtis Granderson was able to catch Chris Coghlan’s fly ball against The Cubs last night! Granderson – or should we say “the speedster”? – denied the Cubs a much-needed home run. It’s very possible Granderson is stealing a bit of the Flash’s Speed Force when he’s out in the field or running to the next base.

Daniel Murphy: Green Lantern

Green Lantern Mets comics

Daniel Murphy may not have the kind of ring that truly matters to baseball players (not yet, at least!), but that’s not stopping him from acting like a cosmic heavy-hitter! It’s almost as if he created his bat as a green construct and then used it to swing away at whoever’s foolish enough to throw a ball at him. As long as the ball isn’t yellow, he should continue to unleash the kind of power that Green Lanterns are capable of.

David Wright: Captain America

Captain America Mets

If a team was full of Marvel and DC heroes, there’s just no denying the fact that they would all respect and listen to one man: Captain America. So, it’s only fitting that the Mets’ captain should be… well, Captain America! Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll hear him shout, “Mets assemble!” in the next game.

Yoenis Cespedes: Superman

Superman

There’s a lot of powerful comic book characters out there. Hulk’s strength grows and grows, and Wolverine can heal from just about anything, but Superman is one of the most well-rounded powerhouses around, and that perfectly represents Cespedes’ ability to play well, no matter where he is on the field. As long as the Cubs don’t get their own version of the deceptive and evil Lex Luthor, Cespedes the Man of Steel should continue to thrive.

Lucas Duda: Hulk

Hulk

Lucas Duda is the strongest one there is! This first baseman is known for his ability to hit a ball with all of his might, and when someone releases that kind of force, there’s always going to be some anger behind the hit. Duda may not be smashing the ground with big green fists, but he certainly is swinging a bat with superhuman strength!

Wilmer Flores: Nightcrawler

NightCrawler

Just like the teleporting X-Man, Flores has become a fan-favorite. Sure, he may not be able to teleport, but after reports of him potentially being traded, fans have rallied behind him and continue to cheer for him, just like the X-Men’s blue elf, Nightcrawler.

Michael Conforto: Robin

Robin

He’s young, but that isn’t stopping him from stepping into the stadium and going head-to-head with some of the most talented competition that’s out there. At just 22 years-old, Michael Conforto is obviously Robin – a young and skilled character who can hold his own, even when his competition has more time on the field.

Juan Lagares: Spider-Man

SpiderMan

Juan Lagares’ jaw-dropping abilities as a left fielder made his comic book counter-part an obvious choice: Spider-Man! His talent at catching fly balls is so good that some may think the guy has Spidey’s superhuman speed and agility, as well as spider sense to boost his reflexes. Juan Lagares does whatever Spider-Man can… in the left field, at least.

Jacob DeGrom: Gambit

Gambit

Jacob DeGrom can’t make a baseball explosive, but he sure can throw it just as well as Gambit can throw one of his glowing cards! Accuracy and speed is key for DeGrom, and that’s something Gambit – an agile X-Man – knows oh-so-well when he’s tossing projectiles at his foes. The fact DeGrom’s hair kind of looks like Gambit’s doesn’t hurt the comparison, either.

Bartolo Colon: Beast

Beast

Bartolo Colon may not be blue and fuzzy or hangs around upside down (or so we think…), but the 42 year-old pitcher has years of experience, just like the X-Men’s longtime member Beast. And hey, he is technically wearing a decent amount of blue!

Jonathon Niese:  Cyclops

Cyclops

Just like how Cyclops has been with the X-Men for quite some time, Niese has been with the Mets since 2008.  As a pitcher, tactics and accuracy are two mandatory qualities. No matter how you feel about Marvel’s Cyclops, no one can dispute those are two things the mutant has mastered. Now, if only Niese could fire baseballs from his eyes instead of pitching them with his arm. Optic strike!

LOL: ‘Back to the Future Part II’ Inspired ‘Jaws 19′ Trailer

by Ethan Anderton

Fantastic

Jaws 19 trailer

The promotions for Back to the Future are getting pretty heavy. Just this morning we found out Pepsi was making Pepsi Perfect a reality to coincide with the arrival of the future from Back to the Future Part II later this month, and now the official page for the film is teasing the arrival of a different sequel that fans of the time traveling franchise should be familiar with.

When Marty McFly walks around the town square of Hill Valley in 2015, one of the things he encounters is an outdoor marquee advertisement for Jaws 19, yet another sequel to Steven Spielberg‘s iconic summer blockbuster. And now a teaser trailer has arrived which not only promotes Jaws 19, but also details every single Jaws sequel leading up to it.

Steven Spielberg on the set of Back to the Future 2

Steven Spielberg on the set of Back to the Future 2 via

Here’s the Jaws 19 trailer, directed by Max Spielberg, real son of Steven Spielberg:

For those who may not know, the fake Jaws sequels begin with Jaws 5, though one could argue that the preceding three sequels could be disregarded as fake Jaws movies and you wouldn’t find many who would disagree.

The long list of sequels includes Jaws 6, which was made for pure pleasure, as well as Jaws 7 and Jaws 8, introducing Cyber Jaws and Robo Jaws respectively. Jaws 11 goes to outer space, while Jaws 15 sees the shark battling a Russian shark adversary. And those aren’t even the most ridiculous sequels.

Aside from the ridiculous fake sequels mentioned above, there’s one that doesn’t sound all that unreasonable for Hollywood to do, given their obsession with reboots. Jaws 9 supposedly follows Chief Brody’s grandson assembling a group to fight sharks, and that’s exactly the kind of thing no fan of Jaws ever wants to see happen. So let’s hope this video doesn’t predict any sort of real future.

For those who don’t know Jaws 19 also has an official poster that can barely be seen in Back to the Future Part II, but was sold by ScreenUsed as an official prop from the film. Here it is:

Jaws 19

Someone needs to figure out how to get a high quality print of this poster distributed to the masses. If there was a time to get it out there, it’s now, so keep your fingers crossed. In the meantime, you can get your hands on a shirt advertising Jaws 19 from the pop culture t-shirt masters at Last Exit to Nowhere, though they seem to be out of stock of some sizes at the moment.

Don’t forget to keep checking our constantly updated guide to Back to the Future anniversary celebrations and promos, and stay tuned for anymore awesome things in the works for fans of the franchise.

‘Freaks of Nature’ Red-Band Trailer: Vampires and Zombies and Aliens, Oh My!

by Angie Han
Corey

Love it.

Freaks of Nature red-band trailer

Several years ago we reported on a Black List script by Oren Uziel called The Kitchen Sink, a horror-sci-fi-comedy mashup that combined vampires, zombies, and aliens. Jonah Hill was originally set to direct, and then Robbie Pickering. A promising cast (including Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt) was assembled, and then the updates slowed down and eventually the project fell off our radar completely.

But it’s back now, in finished form under a new title: Freaks of Nature. And it’s hitting theaters in just two weeks, so Sony has finally put out a first trailer. Nicholas Braun, Mackenzie DavisJosh FademEd WestwickVanessa HudgensJoan CusackKeegan-Michael Key, and Denis Leary star. Watch the Freaks of Nature red-band trailer after the jump.

Sony posted the Freaks of Nature red-band trailer on YouTube. Remember, red-band means NSFW — in this case for language, violence, and what the MPAA might call “some sexual content.”

Confused by what’s going on in the trailer? Here’s the synopsis:

In Freaks of Nature, we welcome you to Dillford, where three days ago, everything was peaceful and business as usual: the vampires were at the top of the social order, the zombies were at the bottom, and the humans were getting along in the middle. But this delicate balance was ripped apart when the alien apocalypse arrived in Dillford and put an end to all the harmony. Now it’s humans vs. vampires vs. zombies in all-out, blood-sucking, brain-eating, vamp-staking mortal combat – and all of them are on the run from the aliens. It is up to three teenagers – one human, one vampire, and one zombie – to team up, figure out how to get rid of the interplanetary visitors, and try to restore order to this “normal” little town.

Freaks of Nature has the potential to be great fun, or a huge disaster. It seems to be going for a kind of Shaun of the DeadThe World’s End vibe, only busier and more frantic. (As befits a film formerly titled The Kitchen Sink.) But the scares in the trailer aren’t really all that scary, and the jokes are only hit or miss.

And frankly, the fact that even Sony seemed to forget this movie existed until earlier today doesn’t bode well. Delayed releases aren’t always a bad sign; Cabin in the Woods was shelved due to circumstances outside its control, and turned out to be an instant horror classic. But the marketing campaign for this one is the definition of lackluster, which doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Still, who knows? Maybe it’ll turn out to be a nice lighthearted alternative to the dark, spooky fare that usually clogs up the multiplexes around this time of year. Freaks of Nature opens October 30.

Watch: Banksy’s Dismaland Is Closed, But You Can Still Experience It With “The Official Unofficial Film”

by Jack Giroux

Dismaland is closed

Banksy‘s Dismaland is closed for good. The dark twist on Disneyland — or an honest depiction, if you loathe the place — highlighted the works of artists Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, and others. It’s one big interactive art piece. For all of you who were lucky enough to have visited Dismaland, damn you. For those of us not fortunate enough to have attended, thankfully there’s plenty of photos and videos for us. Watch Dismaland: The Official Unofficial Film after the jump.

The exhibit ran for just over a month in Weston-super-Mare, U.K. The park featured wonderful sights, like a Cinderella-esque pumpkin with a dead princess, and other imagery that’s not suitable for uncool children. Here’s the trailer they released for the park in August:

Dismaland was a great success, both creatively and financially: the park attracted 4,000 attendees every day; it brought $30.4 million dollars of revenue and investment into the local economy; and hotels saw a 50% increase in business. Dismaland has done more good than that, too, as the remains of the project will help shelter refugees in Calais, France. It’s going to a take a total of three weeks to dismantle Dismaland, and after that, the timber and fixtures will go to the camp.

150,000 people got to see Dismaland in-person. Filmmaker Jamie Brightmore journeyed to the theme park a few times to capture the exhibit on film. Brightmore says that “as depressing as it looks, the park is actually a lot of fun, and it’s all too easy to forget about the underlying messages being presented.”

Here’s the unofficial film Brightmore directed:

Brightmore was kind enough to write up a detailed post on his experience at Dismaland. Here’s some of what he had to say about his experience:

There’s nothing more fun than a little social commentary, decaying castles, creepy puppets, and depressed unicorns. When I first heard about Dismaland my ears lit-up. The place looked set to be an amazing playground for moving image expression, I immediately wanted to film it. With a strong history of banging the refresh button, I managed to score some initial evening tickets for me and some friends. In typical fashion, it’s absolutely pissed it down. That’s fine, I thought, cosy late summer nights is not what this is about. Water and cameras however are not a match made in heaven, but a seasoned outdoor filmmaker makes do with what he can and I got a couple of shots in the can, with my tripod I might add. More importantly, this opening season trip also gave me an opportunity to revel in the spectacular art on show, and reccy the site.

LOL: What If Doc and Marty Traveled to the Real 2015 in ‘Back to the Future Part II’

by Ethan Anderton

Back to the Future in Real 2015

If you don’t know that Back to the Future Day is coming up next week, then you are either deaf and blind or you don’t read /Film more than twice a month. The celebration of the most iconic time travel film franchise is nearly upon us, and there are plenty of big events happening and cool little promotions like Pepsi Perfect on October 21st, 2015.

This is all because that date is when Doc (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty (Michael J. Fox) travel to 2015 in Back to the Future Part II. However, as we know, the 2015 of the movie isn’t the same as the year we’re living in now (there’s even a short that will explain why that’s the case). But what if Doc and Marty ended up going Back to the Future in real 2015 instead?

Here’s Back to the Future in ACTUAL 2015 from College Humor:

“What a dark geopolitical era this is.” Couldn’t have said it any better myself, animated Marty McFly. Indeed, it’s a bit depressing that some of the prophecies of the future of Back to the Future Part II haven’t come true. But at the same time, we’ve made quite a lot of technological advancements since these predictions were made in 1989. Writer Bob Gale ever recently said that he never could have predicted smartphones.

Some of you time-travel nitpickers probably will take issue with the fact that Marty seems to know an awful lot about the fake 2015 from the movie instead of this real 2015, even though this is the first time he’s traveled to the future. But there are far worse things in the world, as this amusing but tragic cartoon points out.

Mostly this is just a topical way of pointing out all the tragic problems we have in the world, whether it’s global warming, failed diplomacy, terrorism, or Crocs (“It looks like a clog f*cked Swiss cheese”). The video also nails the fashions of 2015 perfectly with those stupid baggy crotch pants Marty wears (no, I don’t care what they’re actually called), not to mention the Macklemore haircut combined with gauges that Griff is sporting.

By the way, while I thoroughly enjoy this little bit of satire, I can’t help but feel like it would have been even more fun if they brought Jennifer with them as they did in the movie. It would have been great to have her chime in with some gender-specific jabs at the future as well. Isn’t the future just so grand?

Watch This: A Cello Cover of “Where Is My Mind,” Shot in Reverse

by David Chen

fight club

One of my favorite music cues from all of cinema is the ending of David Fincher’s Fight Club. “Trust me. Everything’s going to be fine,” Edward Norton’s character tells Marla Singer, as explosive charges blow and their surroundings start to come apart. The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind” roars to life in the background, and Norton intones,  “You met me at a very strange time in my life.”

That song, with its stream-of-consciousness lyrics and its simple but poignant refrain, has always struck me as the perfect song to end the film with. In recent days, “Where Is My Mind” was used to great effect in an episode of the hit show Mr. Robot

Inspired by the song and its use in popular culture, I tried to tackle a unique rendition of it using my cello and looping. With vocalist Annie Jantzer, I shot a video featuring a reverse lip-sync of the song. This required the tedious process of recording the song in studio, filming it, reversing the audio, learning the reversed version, filming the music video in reverse, and then reversing the music video to obtain the final result. Was it worth it? Check out the final product after the jump.

You can buy this song and check out my cello EP at davechenmusic.com.

Seth Rogen In Talks To Join James Franco’s The Disaster Artist

by Erik Amaya

Tommy_Wiseau_in_The_RoomThere is some debate as to whether or not The Room is the worst movie of all time. It’s entertaining in spite of itself, which means it is better than Slipstream; an unwatchable film written, directed, scored by and starring Anthony Hopkins. It also features consistently audible dialogue, which makes it more competent than Birdemic: Shock and Terror. The Room also inspired a special devotion from fans charmed by its poor craftsmanship and the earnest pain buried under the script’s naive execution. They also came to enjoy the strange persona of the film’s writer/director/producer Tommy Wiseau.

One of those fans is James Franco, who quickly snapped up the rights to The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room. The book, by The Room co-star Greg Sestero with Tom Bissel, tells the tale not only of the making of the film, but his friendship with Wiseau. Franco will play the filmmaker of indeterminate origins — both in front and behind the camera — while his brother, Dave Franco, will play Sestero.

The Tracking Board reports Franco’s pal Seth Rogen will also join the film in an undisclosed role. Having read the book, I’d guess he’ll play long-suffering script supervisor Sandy Schklair, who ended up wearing many hats during film’s six-month shoot and may have salvaged the movie from being as much of a mess as Slipstream.

Production is expected to being in December.
