Light Bulbs That Look Like Famous Buildings

by John Farrier

Dutch designer David Graas made a series of lamps that look like both light bulbs and famous Art Deco buildings. Each one is lit by a 5 watt LED which illuminates the structure. He calls the series Stalaclights because, like stalactites, they hang down from the ceiling.

This variation on that theme is particularly striking. Huddle shows a cityscape of buildings huddled together, as though they are trying to stay warm in the midst of Antarctic weather.

Ciara Covered The Rolling Stones' "Paint It, Black" For That Awful Vin Diesel Movie

Of the many, many different ways I wanted Ciara to cover The Rolling Stones’ seminal “Paint It, Black”, I can’t really say “Cry-Me-a-River”-meets-Hans-Zimmer’s-Dark-Knight-score was at the top of the list. Personally, I would’ve enjoyed some Astroglide slick Crunk&B from Dre & ...

The Final Girls Is The Smartest Meta-Horror Film Since Cabin in the Woods

by Cheryl Eddy

The Final Girls is a slasher movie, a slasher-movie parody, a horror comedy, and a drama about coming to terms with regrets. Though it’s not especially scary in itself, The Final Girls is the smartest movie about scary movies since Cabin in the Woods.

‘MacGruber 2′ Will Have “The Craziest” Opening Sequence

by Jack Giroux

MacGruber

After a weak performance at the box office, a MacGruber sequel appeared out of the question. Once the film hit home video, though, the movie gained a following. It’s been five years since the first film, based on the SNL parody of MacGyver, came out, and a follow-up seems more possible than ever. If and when the sequel is made, at least we can expect a crazy MacGruber 2 opening sequence. Learn more after the jump.

MacGruber‘s star and co-writer, Will Forte, has been interested in making a sequel for a few years now. At this moment, Forte and his co-writer John Solomon (Saturday Night Live) are working on the first draft. Earlier in the year Forte sounded optimistic the project would move forward.

It seems like we have a realistic shot at getting it made. We have a loose outline of the first couple of acts, which we’re really excited about. So we’ve just got to flesh it out a little more. If [The Last Man on Earth] were to ever be successful enough to get a second season, we’d probably have to wait until after that season to make it. If the show isn’t successful enough to do that, we’d probably jump in right away.

So, you can blame The Last Man on Earth‘s success for holding up MacGruber 2. Forte hasn’t discussed any plot details yet, but he did mention to Screen Crush that he and his creative partners have an idea they’re quite proud of. The actor is promising a crazy MacGruber 2 opening sequence.

There is a possibility of starting it in a way that you would never ever start an action movie. We have this idea for a cold open, which we just don’t know if we have the balls to do. And we’ve done some crazy stuff. This is just like, ‘Do we really want to do this? Is this how we want to start out the movie?’ It’s pretty gnarly. But we might just have to do it.

MacGruber was a pretty cheap movie to make compared to most studio films, so it’s unlikely anyone at Universal will get in their way of delivering a ballsy opening. Forte and director Jorma Taccone embraced the weirdness of the first movie, in all the right ways, so if Forte is calling the opening of MacGruber 2 “crazy,” then it must really be crazy.

The plan is for Taccone to direct the sequel. He is currently in post-production on Conner4Real, which he co-directed with fellow Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod).

Seth Rogen Shopping Garth Ennis’ ‘The Boys’ as a TV Series

by Angie Han
Corey

This would be phenomenal, but will never happen.

The Boys Header

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are currently busy adapting Garth EnnisPreacher for AMC, and now they may be looking to bringing Ennis’ The Boys to television as well. The comic book series centers around a black-ops CIA team tasked with keeping superheroes in line. Read about the possible The Boys TV series after the jump.

News of a potential The Boys TV series comes from Birth.Movies.Death. According to their sources, Rogen, Goldberg, and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke are shopping a small-screen adaptation of The Boys to cable networks. The comic is rife with sex, violence, and pitch-black humor, and would probably feel at home on an edgier network.

Written by Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, The Boys is set in a world with superheroes. But the MCU or the DCEU this ain’t. These costumed heroes are reckless, violent, and corrupt, and often do more harm than good. “The Boys” of the title are a five-person task force who keep the “supes” in line, monitoring them and occasionally taking them out as needed.

The series told a complete story across 72 issues between 2006 and 2012. A few years ago, Adam McKay was set to direct a The Boys movie from a script by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, but nothing came of those plans. But Preacher was similarly stuck in development before it got rescued and retooled as a TV series, and now it’s heading to AMC in 2016 with Dominic Cooper in the lead role.

Maybe The Boys will have similar luck, especially considering that superhero shows are huge on TV right now. Some of them are more traditional tales, like Arrow and The Flash, but lately there’s been some interest in more offbeat stuff as well, like Marvel’s planned Damage Control and DC’s upcoming Powerless.

This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone’s got to make sure the “supes” don’t get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth – superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them – sometimes – need to be taken out of the picture. That’s when you call in The Boys! The Boys Vol. 1: The Name of the Game collects the first six issues of the hit series The Boys by Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Punisher) and drawn by Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, Wolverine)!

‘Roadies’ Season 1 Teaser Trailer: Cameron Crowe’s First TV Show Debuts Next Summer

by Jack Giroux

Cameron Crowe 700

Fans of television, music, and Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous), we have some excellent news for you: Showtime has picked up Roadies. The project, which is about the lives of roadies, is Crowe’s first ever television series. Roadies season 1 will premiere next summer. Learn more and watch the Roadies season 1 teaser trailer after the jump.

Last summer Showtime gave the greenlight to the pilot, written and directed by Crowe, produced by J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot and My So-Called Life creator Winnie Holzman. Over a year later, following some reshoots and recasting, the network has finally ordered 10 episodes for season one of Roadies.

In a press release, Crowe had this to say about his latest project:

I’ve long wanted to work with J.J. and Winnie, and coming together to tell these stories has been beyond a blast. Showtimes has a great track record with music-based projects, and they’ve been wonderful partners. The actors are all so passionate about music too, and the whole show has the feeling of stories and music shared between friends. We can’t wait to bring it all to life in 2016.

Crowe and Showtime put together a very watchable cast with Luke Wilson (Enlightened), Carla Gugino (Watchmen), Imogen Poots (The Green Room), Rafe Spall (Life of Pi), and more. To celebrate the announcement, the writer/director released this cool little teaser on his site, The Uncool.

Crowe says to expect “10 stories about life, music, love and all points in between.” Yep, this definitely sounds like a project from the writer and director of Jerry Maguire and Say Anything. Television should be a natural fit for Crowe, especially given subject matter. Almost Famous hinted at all kinds of stories that could be told in the world of music, because even the most minor of characters we met in that movie probably had their own unique story. Roadies isn’t a period piece, based on this teaser, but it’ll be interesting to see how touring nowadays compares to what we saw in the director’s most acclaimed film.

Created by Crowe, Roadies is an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of “roadies” who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. The series chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music’s unsung heroes and puts the spotlight on the backstage workers who put the show on the road while touring the United States for the successful arena-level group, The Staton-House Band. Kelly Curtis, Pearl Jam’s manager and a regular collaborator with Crowe, is also on board as producer and music supervisor.

Roadies season 1 comes out next summer.

Florida Man: The Comic

by Zeon Santos
Corey

Brilliant.

Florida Man is that ubiquitous everyman you keep hearing about in the media, whose name is almost always followed by the word "arrested" and the details of some crazy crime he committed.

He's the subject of his own Twitter page @_FloridaMan, and a few years back Mandatory hired artist Dave Rappoccio to adapt his misadventures into a series of webcomics.

Each comic features a nondescript fellow who is capable of doing just about anything, as long as it's super strange, and the illustrations really bring these oddball scenarios to life.

Outsiders Trailer: Is This ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Meets ‘Justified’?

by Peter Sciretta

Outsiders Trailer

WGN America released a trailer for their new dramatic series Outsiders. The trailer premiered with the season two premiere of WGN’s critically acclaimed series Manhattan. Billed as “provocative”, the action-packed drama will explore the “epic struggle between the Farrell Clan, who have lived atop the rugged Shay Mountain for over two hundred years, and their battle to defend their land and their way of life from the town below and anyone who would dare to challenge them.” Scheduled to be released in early 2016, you can get your first look at WGN America’s Outsiders in the trailer embedded after the jump.

WGN America’s Outsiders Trailer

WGN America’s Outsiders looks almost like a gritty western version of Sons of Anarchy to me, which isn’t something I’m particularly excited about. I’ve heard such great things about WGN’s other series Manhattan, but unfortunately my cable company doesn’t carry the channel and I haven’t yet gotten around to looking for the series on streaming platforms. There are a lot of cable networks joining the fray of the new frontier of great smart original programing — WGN seems to be the latest in a series of networks you wouldn’t expect to even consider for original shows.

You can read the full press release below:

WGN AMERICA UNVEILS PROVOCATIVE FIRST TRAILER FOR THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW DRAMA ‘OUTSIDERS’

Action-Packed Drama set in the Rugged Mountains of Kentucky Slated for 2016 Stars David Morse, Thomas M. Wright, Ryan Hurst and more.  Executive Produced by Peter Tolan, Peter Mattei, and Paul Giamatti

During the season two premiere of WGN America’s critically acclaimed series “Manhattan” on October 13, the network will give viewers a first-look at their upcoming drama, “Outsiders” (premiering early 2016) with the release of a dramatic first trailer.

A Sony Pictures Television and Tribune Studios production, “Outsiders” is written and created by award-winning playwright Peter Mattei, who executive produces alongside Fedora Entertainment’s Emmy® Award winner Peter Tolan (“Rescue Me,” “Analyze This”), Emmy Award-winner Paul Giamatti (“John Adams,” “Sideways”), Dan Carey (“All Is Bright”) for Touchy Feely Films and Fedora’s Michael Wimer (“2012,” “Rake”). “Outsiders” explores the epic struggle between the Farrell Clan, who have lived atop the rugged Shay Mountain for over two hundred years, and their battle to defend their land and their way of life from the town below and anyone who would dare to challenge them.

“Outsiders” is WGN America’s third original series, coming off of its breakout original drama “Salem” and Emmy Award-winning drama “Manhattan.”

The ensemble cast for “Outsiders” includes: David Morse (“Treme,” “Hurt Locker”) as Big Foster, a gruff and powerful heir to leadership; Joe Anderson (“The Divide,” “Across the Universe”) as Asa, a member of the Farrell clan looking to rejoin the family after a stint with the outside world; Thomas M. Wright (“The Bridge,” “Top of the Lake”) as Sheriff Wade Houghton, a cop who has a history with the Farrells, and grapples with a few troubles of his own; Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Bates Motel”), as Lil Foster, a massive mountain man and son of Big Foster; Gillian Alexy (“The Americans,” “Damages”) as G’Winveer, a survivor and Asa’s confidante; Kyle Gallner (“American Sniper,” “Veronica Mars”) as Hasil, an intuitive soul who feels rejected by the group; Christina Jackson (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Deception”) as Sally-Ann, a beautiful girl from a mining town who is fascinated by the Farrells and Hasil in particular; Francie Swift (“Hostages,” “House of Cards”) as Haylie, a cunning, all-American community relations manager with the encroaching coal company; and Phyllis Somerville (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Big C”) as Lady Ray, the regal yet tough leader of the Farrell clan.

About WGN America and Tribune Studios
WGN America, the flagship entertainment network of Tribune Media Company (NYSE: TRCO), is nationally distributed in 73 million homes via cable, satellite and telco, with entertainment programming including the original, scripted series “Salem,” “Manhattan,” “Underground” and “Outsiders,” along with first-run syndicated series, blockbuster movies and live sports. LOL: Fake Sequels Now Shooting in New York City

by Ethan Anderton

Fake Sequels

If you happen to live in a major city, or anywhere that has doubled as a shooting location on a film set, you know that the crew has to let the area know that production will be happening nearby. That often means that certain parts of a street are closed off, and that can make things like parking a real hassle. And some pranksters in New York City have decided to take that normal occurrence and enrage some of the locals beyond just taking away their parking spaces.

Jason Eppink and Mike Lacher have been posting shooting notifications around New York City for fake sequels such as Annie Hall 2, The Godfather IV and Do the Right Thing 2, presumably pissing off cinephiles and residents until they do a little internet research.

Here are images of the signs up around NYC from Jason Eppink’s website (via Movies.com):

nyc-fakesequels5 nyc-fakesequels4 nyc-fakesequels2 nyc-fakesequels3

In addition, after Eppink and Lacher started posting these signs around New York City, a copycat named “Chad” started doing the same thing for terrible sequels like Taxi Driver 2, and more original but equally unsettling ideas such as Williamsburg: The Movie and Bushwick: The Movie.

So if you happen to see any of these shooting notification signs around your neighborhood in NYC, make sure you check around online to make sure you’re not the victim of some sick joke like this. Or if you want to get in on the fun, Eppink’s website has a template that you can print out so you can make your own fake movie sequel shooting notifications for your hometown.

If Eppink and Lacher sound familiar, they’re the guys who painted a line down some New York City sidewalks, creating a lane for tourists and a lane for real New Yorkers. Before you know it, we’ll hear that they’re behind Pizza Rat too.

‘A Very Murray Christmas’ Teaser: Bill Murray is Back with Chris Rock, George Clooney & More

by Ethan Anderton

A Very Murray Christmas teaser

This holiday season will be filled with a little extra Yuletide joy and cheer, as Bill Murray is reteaming with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for a Christmas special that will be exclusively available on Netflix.

So far we’ve only gotten a brief glimpse of the special, but a new A Very Murray Christmas teaser has just popped up online showing off some of the famous faces who will be helping Murray out. George Clooney, Michael Cera, Amy Poehler, Paul Shaffer, Jason Schwartzman, Miley Cyrus (who seems to be singing with Murray in the teaser), Chris Rock and more are all on board for what looks like a most enjoyable holiday party.

Here’s a new teaser for A Very Murray Christmas from Netflix:

As Murray says, “Tonight will go down as the greatest night in history.” And with this cavalcade of talent coming together for some holiday cheer, I wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be true. If you need any more convincing of the fun in store for us this Christmas, check out a new batch of lively photos from the special:

A Very Murray Christmas A Very Murray Christmas A Very Murray Christmas A Very Murray Christmas A Very Murray Christmas

Maya Rudolph, David Johansen, Dimitri Dimitrov, Julie White, Jenny Lewis, Frederic Moulin, Rashida Jones and the band Phoenix will all be appearing as well. Many of them are also contributing to the soundtrack, which will feature new renditions of some classic Christmas tunes. It looks like even Chris Rock is getting in on the singing, if the photos above are any indication, and there’s bound to be plenty of special guests we haven’t even heard about yet.

Here’s hoping that some kind of soundtrack will also be made available to we can play that at our own holiday parties, even if they have considerably less famous people than this particular bash.

This winter, Bill Murray brings an extra-special dose of holiday cheer to Netflix with the premiere of an all-star musically-driven holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas. Set inside New York City’s iconic Carlyle hotel, A Very Murray Christmas opens with Murray preparing to host a live, international holiday broadcast. After a blizzard shuts down the production, he makes the best of the situation by singing and celebrating with friends, hotel employees and anyone else who drops by. Through luck and perseverance, guests arrive at the Carlyle hotel to help him; dancing and singing in holiday spirit.

A Very Murray Christmas hits Netflix on December 4th.

‘W/ Bob & David’ Trailer: Netflix Reunites ‘Mr. Show’ Creators Bob Odenkirk and David Cross

by Angie Han
Corey

Very excited for this.

With Bob and David trailer

No one is a bigger David Cross fan than Netflix. The streaming service revived Arrested Development back in 2013, and now it’s bringing back his ’90s sketch comedy series Mr. Show. Well, sort of. W/ Bob & David is technically an entirely different series, but seeing as it reunites Cross and Bob Odenkirk for more sketch comedy goodness, it should appeal to the same comedy nerds who’ve been gushing about Mr. Show for the past 20 years. Watch the W/ Bob & David trailer after the jump.

With Bob and David Trailer

Here’s the first W/ Bob & David trailer, which promises “plenty of sexy stuff,” according to Cross. “I know that’s your number one thing: ‘Am I going to get to jerk off later?’ Yes, you will.”

The original Mr. Show with Bob and David ran for four seasons on HBO in the mid-’90s. Though not a huge hit in terms of viewership, it was a critical darling and has since proved to be massively influential. It featured talents like Sarah Silverman, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jack Black, Brian Posehn, and Scott Aukerman early in their careers. Some of those people will be back for W/ Bob & David, along with fresh faces like Keegan-Michael Key, who’s seen in the trailer above.

All of which means W/ Bob & David will have some pretty big shoes to fill when it hits Netflix this fall. But Odenkirk stressed in a recent interview that W/ Bob & David should not be considered a continuation of Mr. Show. “In the comedic voice it will feel very much like Mr. Show—how could it not?” he acknowledged. However, “structurally [W/ Bob & David] will be more carefree, and move faster, and not be afraid to have a tonal moment that isn’t grounded in a joke.”

W/ Bob & David lands on Netflix November 13.

After being dishonorably discharged from the Navy Seals, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are back serving our country the way they do best — making sketch comedy.

Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 And 2 Have A Budget Of One Billion Dollars

by Rich Johnston
Corey

For the Dr. Evil reference.

And because I am very excited about these.

drevil_coverMike Meyers is not, as far as I’m aware, involved.

In huddled conversation with very well sourced comic book film insiders in New York bars last night, before New York Comic Con, there was one big topic of conversation. That the next two Avengers films, Infinity War Part One and Two, will have a combined production budget of one billion dollars.

And of that, the above the line costs, that paid to the screenwriter, director, producers and principal actors will be a cool four hundred million dollars alone.

And of the actor budget, Robert Downey Jr gets half.

There’s no script yet. Not even a plot agreed. But it expected that a number of Avengers characters won’t make it out alive…

"Warby Parker sells a monocle. Which just about no one buys. But"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
Corey

May invest in this...

WP co-founder:
When we launched in 2010, our debut collection featured 27 pairs of eyeglasses and one monocle--a handsome tortoiseshell model named after Colonel Mustard. Despite dismal sales and growth prospects that roughly equal zero, the monocle has remained in rotation ever since.
...
But that's exactly why I love it. Nobody expects to stumble across a monocle while shopping in 2013. We have a showroom right inside our office headquarters in New York, and one of my favorite things to do is catch sight of customers discovering the monocle.
Also:
Q - What has been the most surprising insight/development you have found?
A - Warby Parker sells a monocle and it has an extremely high conversion rate. Most people who order this in their Home Try-On boxes end up purchasing it. Conversion is so high that we had to tweak our basket analysis algorithm specifically to account for it.

VOTD: Animated Guide to The Hero’s Journey in Film

by Ethan Anderton

The Hero's Journey

American scholar Joseph Campbell is responsible for identifying the narrative pattern known as The Hero’s Journey. He chronicled the monomyth in The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949 and described this story template like this:

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.

There are actually 16 stages in The Hero’s Journey, and motion designer Iskander Krayenbosch from the Netherlands has created an animated short that runs through 12 of them as they apply to some of the most iconic heroes of motion pictures.

Here’s the animated explanation of The Hero’s Journey (via LaughingSquid):

Krayenbosch created this project as a graduation project for HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, and it’s a pretty nice piece of work. Plus, it’s educational, showing just how similar every hero’s story is at its core. Whether it’s Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Back to the Future, they all fit in Campbell’s breakdown of the hero’s journey.

This is fundamental learning whether it’s in literature or cinema, but believe it or not, there are some people who may not be aware of the concept of The Hero’s Journey. So when someone cynical says all movies are the same nowadays, you can agree and tell them that it’s been like that for decades, even before the art of filmmaking was invented. But it’s how these stages are used and the characters created to propel them that hopfeully makes each and every story unique.

If The Hero’s Journey is something that’s of interest to you in your love of cinema, I recommend checking out this informative breakdown of the concept right here. The more you know…

Cool Stuff: Threadless Reveals ‘Back to the Future’ T-Shirt Collection

by Ethan Anderton

Back to the Future t-shirt

The love for Back to the Future is in full swing, and if you’re looking forward to celebrating all the good stuff that’s on the way for Back to the Future Day on October 21st, but you need some cool new threads to show your love for the time traveling franchise, we have good news.

Threadless has just unveiled a Back to the Future t-shirt collection with 21 new, original shirts from a variety of artists. Some of them are simple tributes to the movies while others get a little more creative with their imagery. But the good news is you can buy them all right now.

Here’s all 21 of the t-shirts available at Threadless right now:

threadless-bttfshirt21 threadless-bttfshirt20 threadless-bttfshirt19 threadless-bttfshirt18 threadless-bttfshirt17 threadless-bttfshirt16 threadless-bttfshirt15 threadless-bttfshirt14 threadless-bttfshirt13 threadless-bttfshirt12 threadless-bttfshirt11 threadless-bttfshirt10 threadless-bttfshirt9 threadless-bttfshirt8 threadless-bttfshirt7 threadless-bttfshirt6 threadless-bttfshirt5 threadless-bttfshirt4 threadless-bttfshirt3 threadless-bttfshirt2 threadless-bttfshirt1

My personal favorites are the two we used in the header image. The Goldie Wilson campaign shirt is very simple, has just the right amount of faux vintage fade, and it’s one of those shirts that someone would have to be a huge Back to the Future fan to understand. Those are my favorite kind of pop culture shirts.

However, if there are any fans of Back to the Future who also happen to love the Adult Swim series Rick and Morty, then you’ll want to swing over to the t-shirt fanatics at TeeFury to pick up this awesome t-shirt that I’ve been sporting for about a month or so.
