Newswire: Fargo won’t return until spring 2017, says creator Noah Hawley

by Victor Beigelman

Fargo, which aired its second season finale last night, has been at or near the top of many year-end TV lists, so it’s no surprise that the show picked up a renewal for season three. What story that third season might follow is unclear, but creator Noah Hawley did at least say recently that it’ll be “more contemporary,” taking place a few years after the events of season one. According to Daniel Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter, though, it looks like we’ll have to wait beyond next year to find out for sure.

On a conference call with Noah Hawley, who says we probably won’t get a new “Fargo” season until Spring 2017.

This news isn’t altogether surprising, given that Hawley recently signed on to executive produce and write both the TV adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s ...

Two Veterinarians on 29 Substances That Dogs Should Never Eat

by Lisa Marcus

Milk aisle at the grocery store | Image: AshokaJegroo

During this season of rich and plentiful foods, we often want to share the wealth with our beloved pets. Yet it's not fun later when a dog has digestive issues as a result of what they've eaten; both for the dog and the owner. Even worse of a scenario is feeding something to the dog that could put his life at risk.

Such a deadly reaction can happen with xylitol, pictured below in the form of peanut butter. A sweetener often found in nut butters, chewing gum and other products labeled "sugar free," the substance can cause vomiting, lethargy, stupor, seizures, and coma in dogs. It can also cause liver failure due to excessive insulin release and hypoglycemia. Surely nothing to mess around with when it comes to our furry best friends.

Read about 29 things that two prominent veterinarians warn are unhealthy or dangerous to feed dogs in this article. Better safe than sorry.  Via The Presurfer

A Surreal Epic About Michael Jackson's Chimp Topped the 2015 Black List

by Cheryl Eddy

Oof. For the picture.

The Black List is an annual ranking of Hollywood’s most promising yet-to-be-produced screenplays. Past years have highlighted eventual awards-grabbers like Argo, American Hustle, and The Social Network, as well as genre entries like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This year’s mix is similarly all over the map.

‘Synchronicity’ Trailer: A Genre-Bending, Time-Traveling Sci-Fi Noir

by Angie Han
Corey

Love time travel movies.

Synchoronicity trailer

In addition to your Star Trek Beyonds and Independence Day: Resurgences, 2016 also promises some more unexpected, under-the-radar sci-fi offerings. Like Synchronicity, a new time-travel noir thriller from writer-director Jacob Gentry (of 2007’s The Signal).

The twisty plot centers on a physicist named Jim Beale (Chad McKnight), whose new invention is able to fold the space and time to create wormholes. Things start to get weird when a mysterious dahlia flower appears out of nowhere, and he discovers that the woman he’s just started flirting with, Abby (Brianne Davis), might not be exactly who she says she is.

Michael Ironside plays a venture capitalist who’s interested in Jim’s device, and AJ Bowen and Scott Poythress play Jim’s scientist pals. Watch the Synchronicity trailer after the jump.

Synchronicity made its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Fest earlier this summer, to promising reviews. The Playlist described it as “a throwback sci-fi noir that’s largely entertaining and, on a technical level, is admirably well-crafted.” (It seems appropriate that a film about time travel would itself feel like a relic from another era.) Birth.Movies.Death. recommended seeing it not once but twice — because, according to them, it’s “the kind of movie that will have you lingering in the lobby afterwards, asking questions and forming theories about the film’s many revelations.”

Magnet Releasing has Synchronicity in theaters and on VOD / iTunes January 22, 2016.

SYNCHRONICITY is a mind-bending ‘Sci-fi Noir’ in the tradition of Blade Runner, Gattaca and Memento. Daring physicist Jim Beale has invented a machine that can fold space-time and ruthless corporate tycoon Klaus Meisner will stop at nothing to get it. When Jim uses the machine to tear open the fabric of the universe, a rare Dahlia appears from the future. But in order to keep the rights to his invention he must prove that it works by finding the flower’s identical match in the present. Jim soon discovers that the Dahlia lies in the hands of the mysterious Abby, who seduces him into revealing his secrets. Convinced that she is in league with Klaus to take ownership of his life’s work, Jim travels back in time to stop the conspiracy before it can happen. But once in the past, Jim uncovers a surprising truth about Abby, the machine, and his own uncertain future.

‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ Honest Trailer: The Best Prequel By Default

by Ethan Anderton

Revenge of the Sith Honest Trailer

If you’ve been revisiting all the Star Wars movies this week in preparation for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then you might have decided to sit through the prequels one more time. At the very least, watching Revenge of the Sith isn’t quite as trying as watching The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones. But even the best film in the prequel trilogy isn’t anything to write home about as indicated in the Revenge of the Sith Honest Trailer that just arrived this week.

Here’s the Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies:

If you haven’t taken the time to rewatch Revenge of the Sith yet, this skewering might make you reconsider. Despite the fact that it’s the best prequel, there is still some of the worst acting in the entire franchise in this movie, and not all of it is from Hayden Christensen. But as the Honest Trailer points out, there are few actors who could work any sort of magic with lines such as “Love can’t save you, Padme. Only my new powers can do that.” Yeah, that’s a real line from the movie.

Anyway, at the very least there are some cool space battles and lightsaber fights, even if the latter gets a little excessive by giving General Grievous four lightsabers. If the trailer is any indicator, I think we’ll be back to a reasonable number of lightsabers in The Force Awakens. We’ll find out tomorrow night at 7pm when the first showings begin around the country.

Legend Is the Weirdest Ridley Scott Movie of All Time

Love Legend.

Tops among Ridley Scott’s best-loved movies are early entries Alien and Blade Runner. His varied career has also included Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, The Martian, and that movie where Russell Crowe weathers his midlife crisis making wine in Provence. But 1985’s Legend is surely his absolutely weirdest effort.

‘SNL’ Delivers a ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Toy Commercial for Kids Ages 6 and Up…Way Up

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Perfect.

Star Wars Toy Commercial

Once Force Friday arrived back in September, it wasn’t just kids who were excited to get their hands on the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys. In fact, part of me wonders if there were more adults anxious to get their hands on some toys that night instead of the youngsters. But that doesn’t mean any of the toy commercials are geared towards adults…until now.

Last night, Saturday Night Live debuted a new Star Wars toy commercial for The Force Awakens action figures and playsets, complete with a wholly accurate representation of some adult collectors snatching up toys out there.

Here’s the Saturday Night Live Star Wars toy commercial from the SNL YouTube channel:

Please note that while this does mock some adult Star Wars fans out there, it’s hardly a low blow just making fun of people for being nerdy and passionate about something they love. There are people who are super obsessive about these Star Wars toys and definitely act like this. I’ve met collectors who buy three different versions of the same toy, and I even have some from my youth that I kept in the package.

It’s a harmless mockery of a real sect of Star Wars fans out there. And just in case some of you out there want to get angry about it, remember that cast member Bobby Moynihan is one of the biggest Star Wars fans around. Check out these photos of him attending the special outdoor Star Wars concert that was put on for fans who attended The Force Awakens panel at Comic-Con:

I love her. She knows. #SWFanConcert A photo posted by Bobby Moynihan (@bibbymoynihan) on

Plus, he was even excited to meet a familiar face at the 40th anniversary celebration earlier this year:

Best. Day. Ever. #SNL40

Honestly, all I can say about this commercial, including Moynihan’s accurate portrayal of the landing of the Millennium Falcon is that it’s true. All of it. And you can bet your bottom dollar that I asked for a few Star Wars toys for Christmas. The Black Series line is one of the best ever produced, and I’ll always be a bit of a kid at heart.

The Black List 2015: The Year’s Most Liked Unproduced Screenplays

by Angie Han

The Black List 2015

For over a decade now, the Black List has come out each December to reveal the most-liked unproduced screenplays of the year. We say “most-liked” because the folks involved are very clear that “the Black List is not a ‘best of’ list. It is, at best, a ‘most liked’ list.” The list, which was compiled by polling over 250 film executives, contains dozens of screenplays written in (or “somehow uniquely associated with”) 2015 but won’t have started shooting by the end of the year. See the Black List 2015 after the jump.

As always, there are screenplays of all sorts, from comedy to sci-fi to drama, by writers of all kinds, from established veterans to total newcomers. According to the Black List site, over 225 films have been made from Black List screenplays, winning a total of 35 Oscars from 171 nominations. Last year’s list included what are now upcoming films by Marc Webb (Gifted), Doug Liman (Mena), and Kenneth Lonergan (Mandhester by the Sea); the year before included SpotlightAmerican Sniper, and The End of the Tour. Other past Black List scripts include WhiplashArgoDjango UnchainedSlumdog Millionaire, and The King’s Speech.

So without further ado…

The 15 Best TV Shows of 2015

by Neil Miller
Corey

Clearly this was written before the last episode of Fargo (still love it).

Best TV Shows of 2015

Today marks the beginning of our annual Year in Review. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be looking at all the best and worst of the year, with a few topics in between. And just as we’ve done since 2010, we’re matching the size of each of these lists to the last two digits of the year. In 2014, we gave you 14 of the best, worst and whatever. This year you’ll get 15 choices for each topic.

This works out especially well for the first list, my assessment of the year in television. 2015 was a great year for television. But it was also a full year of television. It was perhaps the most year of television in the history of the medium.

It’s been so full that while compiling this list, I’ve encountered more blind spots than I’m comfortable admitting. There are a number of shows that I missed. I’m sure these will show up in the comments. I’m several seasons behind on The Walking Dead, but I’ve heard that there’s a renaissance happening for Rick Grimes. I didn’t make it more than a few episodes into the new season of Doctor Who, so I missed out on Maisie Williams. The Leftovers has shown up on a lot of year-end lists, which is a show that I gave up on very early on last year. And I doubt Bill Simmons reads my columns, but he would be disappointed to hear that I’m not watching either The Affair or Homeland at the moment.

This makes me feel like a lazy TV critic, until I inspect the massive list of television that I have consumed this year. Putting together a list of 30 great shows wouldn’t have been half as hard as cutting the list down to 15. But I’ve done it. Here it is, for your reading pleasure and discussion: The 15 Best TV Shows of 2015.

15. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)

Best TV of 2015: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

This show represents my best hope to become the next Cougar Town. As in, a show that starts out with a pretty bad title and weak premise only to transcend and become something completely different entirely. For now, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend rides very high on the performance of Rachel Bloom. She’s manic, sweet and occasionally breaks out into hilarious musical numbers. It sneaks onto the list because it’s wildly entertaining and full or potential. I just hope that bloom and her co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) find ways to keep it fresh when it returns in 2016.

14. The Flash (The CW)

Best TV of 2015: The Flash

The word I would use to describe the entire crop of DC Comics shows — this includes Flash, Arrow and now Supergirl — is confidence. They are so confidently made that even when things get weird, it usually works pretty well. In its second season, The Flash has really hit its stride. The cast continues to be a lot of fun, the crossovers with Arrow have been less of an obstacle for The Flash’s writers room and they’ve cranked up the wild DC villains pipeline. This year we got both a mind-controlling gorilla and a half-man, half-shark. And a new love interest for Barry Allen. Team Patty Spivot, all the way!

13. Humans (AMC)

Best TV of 2015: Humans

Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley’s series about anthropomorphic robots called “synths,” who live and serve in the homes of people in the not to distant future, is one of the shows that caught me off guard this year. It started very slowly, but my curiosity (and perhaps a little android fever from the excellent film Ex-Machina) kept me in the game. I’m glad that I stuck with it, as it has really great momentum down the home stretch of its first season. Both Gemma Chan and Emily Berrington are excellent as two of the synths. And The IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson and Mr. Selfridge’s Tom Goodman-Hill turn in strong performances as the humans that end up entangled in their story. The show, which was a big hit for the UK’s Channel 4, has already been picked up for season two and honestly, it’s the kind of world that I could live in for well beyond another season.

12. iZombie (The CW)

Best TV of 2015: iZombie

The simple logline for Rob Thomas’ iZombie is that it’s “Zombie Veronica Mars.” And that’s true in the best possible way. Rose McIver has all kinds of Kristen Bell charm as Liv, an undead medical examiner who solves crimes by eating brains. From the opening credits — which are the best on television — this show always brings a wonderful energy, even if it’s mostly just a procedural. It’s McIver who drives the show forward, but a strong supporting cast that fill in the gaps wonderfully. It was a charming show with a fun premise in season one, but this year brought a season two in which it’s caught an excellent rhythm, delivered compelling multi-episode narratives and I suspect still has some tricks up its sleeve.

11. Broad City (Comedy Central)

Best TV of 2015: Broad City

There are a few shows on my list that are in the “Repeat and Random” category. Much like the “Binge Watch” category, these are shows that can be easily consumed in big chunks. The difference being that a show like Broad City can be consumed repeatedly, with episodes at random. This is what has made South Park great over the years. Any time you find it on, no matter what episode is rolling, you can jump right in and enjoy. The adventures of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are the kind that can easily be enjoyed, whenever, wherever, in all their hilarious and disturbing glory. There’s even an episode in season two that features Kelly Ripa and Alia Shawkat that might be one of my top 5 episodes of television all year.

The Best Action Movies of 2015

by Rob Hunter
Corey

Love end of the year lists.

Best Action Movies of 2015

Last year featured some quality action films, but the shortage of great ones meant our list of the year’s fourteen best actually featured two trailers for 2015 releases. (I make no apologies for that decision.) This year wasn’t much better overall, but I did at least manage to find fifteen action films that made the cut.

A quick note: while American films that have only played festivals don’t count towards the list — sorry Green Room, next year — I am including foreign titles that as of yet have no U.S. release.

dashes

15. A Hard Day

There isn’t a lot of action in Kim Seong-hoon‘s smartly-crafted and darkly comic thriller, but what is here works beautifully to raise the suspense alongside viewers’ heart rates as the story careens through numerous twists and turns. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

14. Spectre

Director Sam Mendes takes a cue from his previous Bond outing (Skyfall) and packs his latest with plenty of big action beats uninterested in logic, and while their size and scope make are appealing the film’s best sequence is a stripped down brawl between Daniel Craig and Dave Bautista. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

13. Kung Fu Jungle

Donnie Yen isn’t the lead action star here — that honor belongs to Wang Bauqiang as the villain who takes part in multiple battles, each with a different focus, on his way to an end brawl with the film’s star — but the 51 year-old Yen proves himself to still be a scrappy and wickedly fast fighter. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

12. Furious 7

The seventh entry in the blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise is a step down from parts 5 and 6 — you know it’s true — but while some of the big set-pieces underwhelm the movie manages some stellar fight scenes featuring Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, and others. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD]

dashes

11. Nowhere Girl

Mamoru Oshii‘s film is an artsy slow-burn for much of its short run-time, but the third act reveals Nana Seino as the next great female ass-kicker with an extended action sequence that sees her fighting, shooting, and slicing her way through a couple dozen armed soldiers — it’s a beautifully choreographed assault that reminds favorably of the South Korean gem, The Man from Nowhere. [Currently unavailable in the U.S.]

dashes

10. Assassination Classroom

The movie’s nuts in the best possible ways, but as ridiculous as it gets — it is a Japanese film about a tentacled alien whose dedication to teaching takes precedence over his students attempts to kill him each morning — it commits to the story and characters and floods the screen with energetic alien antics and gun-play. [Currently unavailable in the U.S.] [My review]

dashes

9. Momentum

I’m admittedly in the tank for both Olga Kurylenko and James Purefoy, but they’re only part of the fun here as the movie features some strong action beats that run the gamut from a smartly-crafted car chase to gun-play to several exciting fight scenes. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

The Aliens Strike Back in The Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer

by Neil Miller
Corey

I am interested.

Independence Day 2

It’s only December 13, so it will be a long while before we celebrate Independence Day the national holiday. But that won’t stop 20th Century Fox from celebrating Independence Day the movie franchise with a new trailer for the upcoming sequel.

Let’s break the story of Independence Day: Resurgence down: It’s been 20 years since the events of the first film. Earth has used alien technology to upgrade its defense systems in anticipation of a new attack. But as Jeff Goldblum explains, it probably isn’t enough. And a grizzled Bill Pullman confirms that yes, they are coming back.

Now, watch the trailer:

“That’s definitely bigger than the last one,” a line that says more about the movie itself than a single spaceship. Based on these two minutes alone, we’re already seeing an amped-up version of Roland Emmerich’s first film. The action looks monstrous (and potentially a little bloated, but we’ll see, the last one had a pretty great rhythm).

There also appears to be plenty of Legacyquel stuff going on here. It Follows star Maika Moore is seen as President Whitmore’s daughter. She’s not just a love interest for a new character (played by Liam Hemsworth), but appears to have followed in the heroic pilot footsteps of her father. We also see Jesse Usher as the son of Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith’s character in the original). Even though not every character from the original will return, it appears as if all the family lines are still there, still trying to keep aliens from destroying all of our precious monuments.

Here’s what I’m most interested in seeing, as this is perhaps the most interesting thought experiment for an Independence Day sequel. I want to see how the world has rebuilt in 20 years. Remember, it wasn’t just the iconic White House that was destroyed. Almost every major city around the world was wiped off the map by the initial alien attack. That means no Washington, no Los Angeles, no Paris, etc. What does the world look like 20 years later? The hope is that the filmmakers do some interesting world-building in the run up to what I can only imagine is another major clash with aliens.

Independence Day; Resurgence is due in theaters June 24, 2016.

MetaFilter founder swaps GOP candidates’ guns for dildos with hilarious results

If there’s one thing the current slate of Republican primary candidates have in common, it’s their love of guns. They love to have their picture taken holding guns. Guns make them look like virile protectors and show the base how much they love the Second Amendment.

MetaFilter founder Matt Haughey has had enough of these heat-packing photo ops and has decided to replace the candidates’ weapons with harmless dildos. He launched the project and the accompanying Tumblr, GOP Dildo, on Saturday, and started asking followers to send in images they’d like him to photoshop. So far, the results have been priceless.

Christmas comes early as Sleater-Kinney covers The Ramones

The women of Sleater-Kinney spewed some grade-A Christmas cheer all over the crowd at Cleveland’s House Of Blues last night when they began their encore by launching into a ripping cover of the Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight).” The performance was promptly uploaded to YouTube so that we can all share in Cleveland’s good fortune. It’s a good representation of Joey Ramones’ 1989 contribution to the holiday canon, and Carrie Brownstein seems to be having a lot of fun on the mic. It’s also a pretty good recording, which is almost as rare as a good Ramones cover.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Surpasses Kickstarter Goals; To Return With 14 Episodes

by Erik Amaya

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeess.

mst3kLate on Friday, the Bring Back Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter campaign surpassed its final stretch goal, ending at $5.7 million. But with additional contributions from add-on rewards raised outside of Kickstarter’s system, the grand total came out to $6.3 million, allowing creator Joel Hodgson to bring the show back for 13 episodes and a holiday special. The final tally also makes the campaign the most successful crowdsourced video project of all time. (Disclosure: I contributed to the campaign myself)

As previously reported, the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will star Jonah Ray as man trapped in space and forced to watch cheesy movies. With him will be Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn as robot pals Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo. On Earth, his evil uberlords will be played by Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt.

Hodgson also announced a number of guest writers like Community creator Dan Harmon will stop by to contribute jokes and actors like Jerry Seinfeld might also make cameo appearances. The new season is expected to stream its first new episode in nearly twenty years late in 2016.

Booze Geek: Wet Hot American Wheat Ale

by Patrick Dane

Beer: Wet Hot American Wheat Ale
Brewery: Finch’s Beer Co.
ABV: 5%

Recently I have been commuting through Penn Station a lot and to my amazement, I have been making a couple of pretty good beer finds. On my most recent outing, my eyes caught a can that I had to get if only for the novelty. I snagged a can of Wet Hot American Wheat Ale, made by Finch’s out of Chicago.

Wet Hot American Wheat Ale
poured a half-inch head that lasted a long time. It was a slightly cloudy yellow color. Despite not being marked as so, it was definitely an unfiltered beer as I saw a good amount of sediment floating around at the end of the pour. It gave off the scent of light banana and yeast.

I was surprised by how hoppy this beer was, given that it was labeled as a wheat ale. However, I later discovered that it is in fact a pale wheat ale. Typically, I am a fan of that style of beer, but I did not think this one pulled it off right. There were just some traces of banana in the finish, which also tasted rather herbal. Most of the beer’s flavor was just bitter hops, with not much other character.

Overall, I found Wet Hot American Wheat Ale to have a very strange flavor palate. The combined styles of pale ale and wheat did not work for me. However…

What to Drink This To
:

If you are a fan of the cult movie (and now Netflix series) Wet Hot American Summer, then there is no other beer for you. I recall the first time I was watching the movie this year in anticipation of the series. I was utterly perplexed at the oddness of the film. But as the layers of weirdness grew and grew, I started giving less of a hoot and loving it more. The Netflix series had its moments (the array of celebrity cameos is out of this world), but nothing will really trump WHAS in terms of out there comedy. This is a film where I fully accept a talking can of vegetables as a critical character piece.
