Our friends at The A.V. Club just published an insanely awesome oral history of the obstacle course from Nickelodeon’s classic game show Double Dare, and it’s chock-full of icky, messy fun. This look behind-the-scenes comes is timed right: Nickelodeon is airing a one-night only Double Dare special on Wednesday to…

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 12 Promo Is Super NSFW

by Patrick Dane

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia sure does like to push the boat out sometimes. It swears, is about awful people and is never afraid to take a swipe at some pretty touchy subjects. It’s everything that has made the show feel unique and endure for eleven seasons.

It is currently gearing up for its twelfth, and it has a new promo showing off the debauchery. It’s very liberal with some pretty bad words and ideas, so maybe not watch this one in a work place.

The show is back January 4th

James Gunn’s Trailer For The Belko Experiment Just Hit And It’s Intense

by Bill Watters
the-belko-experiment-image-john-c-mcginley

Well we’ve been waiting for this to hit ever since the micro-teaser appeared online a few days ago, but the new thriller written by Guardian of the Galaxy’s James Gunn has finally arrived. While we thought he’d been completely heads down last year working on Guardians 2, it turns out that he’d had a burst of inspiration from a dream he’d had and came up with The Belko Experiment.

Over a span of two weeks he pounded out the script. In March, Australian director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) came aboard to direct, with production taking place last summer but then it’d largely fallen off the radar. That is until the teaser appeared, and now we’ve got the full red-band trailer.

The gist of the story pretty much this:

On what appears to be a normal day at Belko Industries, Belko employees are horrified when they find out that they’ve become guinea pigs in a company-wide experiment which will lead them to either kill their fellow employees or be murdered themselves. The experiment is masterminded by a mysterious voice which is controlling the loud speaker and instructing the employees to slaughter each other by any means necessary.

The film stars 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s John Gallagher Jr. , Guardian’s  Sean Gunn and Michael RookerAdria ArjonaJohn C. McGinleyTony GoldwynDavid DastmalchianMelonie Diaz, and Josh Brener.

So think a cross of Die Hard and Hunger Games and put it through Gunns creative mind. I don’t know about you but I’m really hoping for something along the lines of something spontaneous and inspired out of left field like Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods.

‘Goon: Last of the Enforcers’ Trailer: Seann William Scott Is Back on Ice

by Angie Han

Goon Last of the Enforcers trailer

Canadian Thanksgiving came and went over a month ago, but American Thanksgiving takes place this week. So consider this a little holiday gift from our neighbors in the north. The first trailer for Goon: Last of the Enforcers brings back Seann William Scott as hockey enforcer Doug Glatt. Though he’s retired now, the sequel sees him lured back to the ice in search of glory.

Liev Schreiber returns as his professional rival, and Alison Pill as his love interest. Elisha Cuthbert and Wyatt Russell have also joined the cast. Jay Baruchel, who co-wrote and co-starred in the first film, makes his feature directing debut with Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Check out the Goon: Last of the Enforcers trailer below.

Goon: Last of the Enforcers Trailer

The first Goon was a pleasant surprise, a heartfelt comedy centered on a sweet, simple lead who finds himself out of his element when he’s recruited to join the Halifax Highlanders. And while tons of sports movies feel generic, Goon also felt steeped in the unique quirks of Canadian hockey culture. It sounds like Last of the Enforcers will continue in that vein, based on recent comments by Baruchel:

This is about an age that’s drawing to a close. It’s a role, the goon, that’s going out of fashion. It was the stuff of talking heads when we made the first movie, about whether or not these guys have a place and how much of a place they should have. This is even more so now. It’s timed out perfectly to what we wanted to say about Doug’s (Seann William Scott) career. If we do our jobs telling the story right, then Doug is the prototype and represents a bygone era. He’s the last cowboy during The Depression, sort of thing. That’s the goal of the story we’re trying to tell.

Goon: Last of the Enforcers opens in Canada March 17, 2017. No U.S. release date has been announced.

After one too many concussions, hockey enforcer Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) is forced to give up his aspirations of going to the big show and settle into a buttoned down career as an insurance salesman at the urging of his pregnant wife Eva (Alison Pill). However, Doug can’t resist the siren call of the Highlanders, so he sets course to reclaim his former glory.

‘Emerald City’ Trailer: ‘Wizard of Oz’ Meets ‘Game of Thrones’ on NBC

by Angie Han

Emerald City trailer

If you’ve ever watched The Wizard of Oz and wished it played more like a low-rent version of Game of Thrones — or, conversely, if you’ve ever watched Game of Thrones and thought it could use some Wizard of Oz insanity — then Emerald City might be for you. The new NBC series from Tarsem Singh reimagines L. Frank Baum’s classic adventure as a grown-up fantasy drama. A young cop named Dorthy Game is whisked off to a far-off realm where she must contend with witches, warriors, sky portals, and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Watch the Emerald City trailer below.

Emerald City Trailer

The path to Emerald City has had more twists and turns than the Yellow Brick Road. First ordered to series all the way back in 2014, it was scrapped just months later, before it ever had a chance to air. It was revived a few months after that, with Singh set to direct all ten episodes of the first season. Now it’s finally on its way to premiere in 2017, three years after NBC first granted it a series order. Adria Arjona (Person of Interest) stars as Dorothy Gale, D’Onofrio plays the Wizard, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen the Scarecrow.

The question now is whether Emerald City will turn out to be worth all that trouble, and based on that trailer… I don’t know, guys. It looks bonkers, that’s for sure. But it is it crazy in a fun way, like Sleepy Hollow season one, or crazy in a boring and terrible way, like Sleepy Hollow season two? Is it awkward that the Scarecrow is sexy now, and that Dorothy clearly has the hots for him? Is this show taking itself way too seriously, or just seriously enough? Is it odd that the witches of Oz are running around in push-up bras? Are D’Onofrio’s extensive hairpieces at all convincing? These are the pressing questions we’ll need answered when Emerald City premieres Friday, January 6 at 9/8c on NBC.

In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and a K9 police dog are swept into a world far removed from our own – a mystical land of competing realms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. Starring Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil, Jurassic World) as the guileful Wizard and directed by the visionary Tarsem Singh across three European countries, this is Oz completely reimagined – a place where familiar characters show up in fresh, unexpected ways, and where an unsuspecting young woman holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands. And as Dorothy navigates this dangerous world and uncovers her true destiny, we’ll see there’s no place like… Oz.

Watch The Most Inventive Cinematic Music Video You’ll See This Year

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

They are the fucking best!

OK Go The One Moment

Today I wanted to share with you something I watched over the weekend, the music video for OK Go‘s “The One Moment,” from their album Hungry Ghosts. We don’t typically cover music videos on /Film, but I thought this one was worth our focus. If you watch one music video this year, make it this one.

OK Go The One Moment Music Video

The music video was captured in 4.2 seconds but slowed down to 4 minutes presenting 318 events (54 colored salt bursts behind Tim, 23 exploding paint buckets, 128 gold water balloons, etc.), each triggered digitally to set off several hundred events in extremely quick succession, and presented in super slow motion. The video is not just slowed down to one speed, but each section has its own constant rate. For instance, when the guitars explode we are watching 200x slower than reality (6,000 frames per second), but Tim and Andy’s short bursts of lip sync are only 3x slower than real life (90 frames per second). The watermelons are around 150x, and the spray paint cans are a little over 60x.

You might think this is a nightmare to plan, and you’d be right. The events were synchronized to the music. OK Go explains:

The whole point of the video is to explore a time scale that we can’t normally experience, but because it’s so inaccessible to us, our tools for dealing with it are indirect. The only way we can really communicate with that realm is through math. The choreography for this video was a big web of numbers — I made a motherfucker of a spreadsheet. It had dozens of connected worksheets feeding off of a master sheet 25 columns wide and nearly 400 rows long. It calculated the exact timing of each event from a variety of data that related the events to one another and to the time scale in which they were being shot. Here’s a screen shot of just the first few lines, to give you a sense.

Planning all of this is not easy, and looks like this Google spreadsheet:

zz50d159c7

I grew up as a cinephile in an age where some of the most visionary filmmakers came out of the world of music videos. Names like Michael Bay, David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Zack Snyder, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Tarsem Singh, Alex Proyas and Gore Verbinski. I haven’t been as impressed by the inventive visuals of the format as much the last decade, but this might be because MTV shed its skin and the videos have less money to play with, or it may just be that I am aged-out of watching the new music videos which now live on YouTube.

The music video for OK Go’s “The One Moment” definitely reminds me of Gondry and Jonze’s early work, as does their earlier viral music videos. All of them are so smart, inventive, visual and wonderful. Most interesting is that the videos are directed by Damian Kulash, not the traditional aspiring filmmaker, but the guitarist and lead singer for the band. You’ve probably seen the bands many other music videos, which have all gone viral. But in case you haven’t, I’ve included them below:

Netflix’s ‘White Rabbit Project’ Trailer Reunites the ‘MythBusters’ Build Team

by Angie Han

White Rabbit Project trailer

MythBusters ended its run earlier this year, after fifteen seasons on the Discovery Channel. But if you still haven’t quite gotten over that loss, then Netflix may have just the thing for you. The streaming service has unveiled the first trailer for White Rabbit Project, which looks basically like MythBusters minus Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage. Instead, the former Build Team — Grant ImaharaKari Byron, and Tory Belleci — gets to be front and center this time.

Watch the White Rabbit Project trailer below.

White Rabbit Project Trailer

When White Rabbit Project was announced a couple months ago, it was described as MythBusters in Wonderland.” The promise was that it would send the trio “down the rabbit hole of the internet” to investigate “weird and wonderful events from pop culture, science, and history.” As with MythBusters, the hosts will conduct experiments, builds, and tests to get to the truth behind urban legends and historical anecdotes. And as with MythBusters, it sounds like things will get pretty strange. Just in the trailer, you’ve got the gang staging a jailbreak, blowing things up, and making remarks like, “I’ve never sexed a cockroach either.” I don’t even want to know the context for that last one.

So yeah, White Rabbit Project looks kind of familiar, but that seems to be its charm. It should hit the sweet spot for people who want something that’s basically exactly like MythBusters, only not a rerun. Imahara, Byron, and Belleci have clearly built up a wonderful rapport from their years together on MythBusters, and it should be fun to see them team up again.

All episodes of White Rabbit Project will be on Netflix December 9.

The coolest tech. The weirdest weapons. The craziest escapes. Three science-loving sleuths put them under the microscope.

Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara rank history’s greatest inventions, heists and more in this series from the producers of “MythBusters.”

Nintendo Worlds Coming to Three Universal Studios Theme Parks

by Jacob Hall

nintendo worlds universal studios

Back in 2015, we first learned that Universal Studios was teaming up with Nintendo to bring the video game company’s iconic characters and games into their theme parks. Details were scarce – which parks would feature Nintendo characters and how they’d be utilized remained unknown.

Today, the first official details have been revealed. Entire Nintendo-themed lands are being planned for Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Orlando, and Universal Studios Japan and adjectives like “expansive,” “immersive” and “interactive are being tossed around. Hit the jump to learn about the Nintendo Worlds coming to Universal Studios theme parks.

nintendo world

The news was announced by Universal and while exact details are under lock and key, here is what they did unveil:

  • Nintendo-themed areas are coming to Universal Studios Japan, Universal Orlando Resort, and Universal Studios Hollywood.
  • These will be expansive, immersive and interactive. They’ll be highly themed and authentic environments filled with multiple attractions, shops, and restaurants.
  • You’ll feel as if you’re playing inside your favorite games – in real life.
  • There will be something for everyone—regardless of their age or gaming experience level.
  • Planning and creative work on these areas is well underway; they will open separately over the next several years.

The rest of the post leans heavily on Super Mario imagery, suggesting that the unique and instantly recognizable aesthetic of Nintendo’s core franchise will form the core look of the new land:

Imagine the fun of stepping into a larger-than-life Nintendo adventure. Gigantic Piranha Plants spring to life. Question blocks, power-ups and more surround you. And Mario and all his friends are there to pull you into a brand-new world.

And while it’s possible to imagine plenty of attractions based around Mario games (a Mario Kart racing ride, anyone?), Nintendo is bigger than just one acrobatic Italian plumber. Game series like Metroid and The Legend of Zelda offer science fiction and fantasy concepts that could easily provide a foundation for thrilling new attractions. The possibilities are limitless for a Nintendo theme park land.

Universal shared this video featuring Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Universal Creative’s Mark Woodbury talking up the expansion. Naturally, their combined statements add up to little more than “It’s going to be really cool!” because it’s far too early to talk about anything yet.

This news arrives at a time when Universal Studios has been pursuing a larger share of the theme park business. While Disney still dominates the industry, Universal has been more active in recent years, using the massive success of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (which now exists in their Florida, California, and Japanese parks) to expand and add new attractions. An entire Simpsons land sprouted up around the The Simpsons Ride in California. Universal Orlando recently opened a new a King Kong ride while attractions based on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show and the Fast and Furious series are in the works. The company’s first waterpark, Volcano Bay, is set to open next summer. Quite simply, Universal is hungrier and faster than the competition right now.

Of course, Universal’s recent strides only encouraged Disney to push ahead with new rides and lands based on Avatar, Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar movies. This little cold war makes this a good decade to be a theme park fan.

There’s a lot of necessary information unavailable to us at the moment. When does Universal expect actual construction to begin on these expansions? Where will the already compact Universal Studios Hollywood find room for this new land? Which of the two Universal Studios Florida parks will get Nintendo World? We’ll probably know more soon enough.

Mythbuster Alum’s White Rabbit Project Series to Premiere on Netflix December 9th

by Bill Watters
white-rabbit-project

The trailer for Netflix’s new science-investigation series, White Rabit Project, has finally climbed out of it’s hole. The series starring Mythbuster’s alums Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara is set to premiere at midnight on Dec 9th when all 10 episodes will become available. The trio will use their scientific and investigative skills to investigate events from pop culture, science, and history.

Under their microscope are topics as diverse as jailbreaks, superpower technology, heists and crazy world war two weapons. In each episode the hosts immerse themselves in experiments, builds and tests as they sleuth the truth behind these and other well googled themes. In the trailer we get glimpses of some of the things they’ll be investigating, including the daring jail escape of Pascal Payet, and the air robbery of D.B. Cooper. There’s also a scene of Kari sexing a cockroach, and if nothing else, we’ve got to find out what context that comes from.

In speaking with Imahara on what it was like to get to work with the others again on the new series, he said, “It was great getting the band back together again. One of the great things about working with a team for so long is that it felt like almost no time had passed. We were back in the zone on day one.”

If that’s the case it’ll be a real treat to get to see them all in action once again – investigating through science and blowing stuff up. Plus with that cover image of Kari on the video below, don’t you want to see what happens when she pulls the trigger? (I think it’s a net-throwing gun, but am kind of hoping it’s a plasma rifle that they’ve cobbled together)

Sequel 2 is coming to the iam8bit gallery in Los Angeles at the end of the month, and the first pieces from the follow-up show have artwork for unproduced sequels such as E.T. The Return, Being Jeff Goldblum, Who Shot Roger Rabbit?, Son of Scissorhands, Close Encouters 2: Reunion and more. Check out the pieces released from the Sequel 2 art show so far after the jump.

Here’s the prints from Sequel 2 that have been release so far by iam8bit:

Chris Meloni To Star In TV Adaptation Of Grant Morrison And Darick Robertson’s “Happy!”

by Jude Terror

christophermeloniAccording to Deadline, Christopher Meloni, most well known for his roles as “that guy from Law and Order: SVU” and “Beecher’s boyfriend on Oz,” and also as the guy who played Casey Jones in the original TMNT movie, even though that was actually Elias Koteas, has signed on to play Nick Sax in a television adaptation of Happy!, the comic book by Grant Morrison and Darrick Robertson. Morrison, a wizard, announced the news himself by apparating into Deadline’s offices in a puff of purple smoke and shrieking the news telepathically into the minds of all reporters in the office before firing off a few quick hexes and escaping out the window and into the night sky riding on the back of a giant vampire bat. Either that, or “sources” told them. Believe what you want.

Deadline has a summary of the story:

Once a rock star detective for a major metropolitan police force, Nick lost it all. Now he’s a broken, down-and-out hired killer who makes just enough money to support a steady diet of booze, drugs and sarcasm by carrying out hits for the mob. After one hit goes wrong, his life is forever changed by a tiny, relentlessly positive, imaginary blue-winged horse.

Based on a true story, of course.

The TV adaptation of Happy was first announced back in August. Morrison will executive produce along with a bunch of Hollywood people, and Meloni for at least the pilot. Now they just need someone to play the horse.

LOL: ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Characters Return in Hilarious ‘The Walking Dead’ Spoof on ‘SNL’

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love it.

Dave Chappelle Walking Dead

Last night brought Dave Chappelle to Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza to host Saturday Night Live. This was a huge return to sketch comedy for the comedian who stepped away from a $50 million contract at Comedy Central, and the result was an outstanding episode of SNL overall. We’ll get to that later today, but first, there’s a sketch that you just have to see as soon as possible.

While we thought rights issues would prevent Dave Chappelle from being able to revive any of his signature characters from Chappelle’s Show, they must have worked something out with Comedy Central. Originally Chappelle wasn’t sure he wanted to bring back any of his characters while hosting SNL, and who can blame him, but he saw the perfect opportunity to do so by parodying the seventh season premiere of The Walking Dead where the twisted Negan decides which of the show’s main characters he’s going to kill with his trusty bat Lucy.

Watch the Dave Chappelle Walking Dead sketch after the jump.

The scene plays out with Dave Chappelle as Negan, trying to determine if he should kill Clayton Bigsby, Lil Jon, Donnell Rawlings or Tyrone Biggums (all played by Dave Chappelle too, obviously). This sketch is so perfect that it feels like it’s from a new season of Chappelle’s Show. Seeing these characters makes me wish he would come back and give us the full season that we never got from him, but I can’t imagine that will happen.

In a way, this scene could also prove to be rather therapeutic for Dave Chappelle. While I’m sure he loves these characters dearly, they were also something he came to be defined by as a comedian, which is partially what made him so uncomfortable about the level of fame he had reached. That combined with the fact that he felt some of his fans were getting the wrong message from some of his racially charged sketches full of social commentary is what took Chappelle away from comedy.

But having Dave Chappelle back on Saturday Night Live was a great return for the comedian, and I hope this is just the beginning of his return to television. Though Chappelle has been back to doing stand-up for years now, we need a brilliant comedian like him back on television again.
