When Joe Hill Asked His Dad For Writing Help

Social Media and stream platform Twitch revealed the trailer for their upcoming Big Buck Hunter documentary called Ironsights. This mini-documentary will be the first original documentary produced by Twitch Studios, the in house production company responsible for the Twitch Weekly and convention content.

Twitch intends to experiment with creating original narrative and documentary content with Ironsights, so if it does well, we’ll expect to see more original content created by Twitch, which combined with our earlier announcement, means we’ll be getting some tv-style programming from Twitch in the near future. I can’t quite see this not doing well as Twitch is certainly a driving force in content creation right now and Sara Erlandson, the star of Ironsights, has quite a sizable following.

“There are a lot of amazing stories to tell about the Twitch community which rarely get the attention they deserve,” said Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham, director of Twitch Studios. “With Twitch Studios, we are looking to shine a light on these stories and celebrate our community. A great example of this is Ironsights, which is how Sara Erlandson, one of our community members, made a name for herself in the highly competitive Big Buck HD scene.”

The 22-minute doc follows Sara Erlandson, Wisconsin bar owner turned Big Buck phenomenon and Twitch streamer, as she travels to the World Championship in Austin, Texas. Ironsights premieres on April 7 at 2pm PST right after that day’s conclusion of Twitch Weekly. It will be live streamed and uploaded on the Twitch Studios’ channel. Ironsights will be saved as VOD on Twitch for those who miss the stream to watch at their leisure.

Twitch Expands Their Original Programming With Big Buck Hunter Documentary Ironsights

This morning, the relaunch of Mystery Science Theater 3000 saw it’s first official trailer hit YouTube, promoting the show’s debut on April 14 on Netflix. It’s been a long year and a half wait for the series to finally be produced, but the debut of the initial 13 episode run (plus one more as a holiday special later this year) is finally set to go. The trailer gives the most basic plot elements, showing that Kinga Forrester is starting her family’s old experiment back up, and managed to trap a lonely Gizmodo employee into doing it. There’s a lot of nostalgia elements mixed in with new elements that give the show both a warm comfort food feeling while also having some new tastes to the side. While there are some graphics and CGI, it’s nice to see the show sticking to its roots with models and tacky set pieces. Almost brings it right back to the heart… The next four weeks can’t come soon enough.

Fans of the shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, or just fans of food in general, your time has come! Los Pollos Hermanos is coming to New York City’s Financial District April 9th and 10th at 243 Pearl St. Hours will be from 10am-8pm both days. The pop up is tied in with the season three premier of Better Call Saul. According to Entertainment Weekly:

“The stunt is tied to the return of Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), who will appear in season 3 of the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul. Fring’s return was announced in mid-January with the release of a Los Pollos Hermanos commercial. A few days after the news broke, Esposito made a surprise appearance at a Better Call Saul panel during the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena and handed out boxes of Los Pollos Hermanos chicken.”

The pop up restaurant has already been in LA and Austin, so East Coasters this may be your one shot at chicken (but no drugs) glory.

While James Corden‘s most viral contribution to late night television is undoubtedly Carpool Karaoke, which will be getting its very own series soon on Apple Music, he’s also known for having some fun recreating the movies of some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

The Late Late Show has seen James Corden team up with the likes of Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger to deliver cheap and quick recreations of their most iconic roles. But no actor who has taken on the role call challenge has had quite as expansive a body of work as Samuel L. Jackson. Even in 11 minutes, they don’t even come close to recreation all of Samuel L. Jackson’s movies, but they did remember to include his bit part in GoodFellas, so that’s gotta be worth something.

James Corden gets to have the most fun as he jumps into a wide variety of roles played by an eclectic array of talent opposite Samuel L. Jackson, but the Star Wars prequel co-star is having a good time revisiting these roles. The way they fit in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is kind of cheap, but it’s all about speed, so I guess we’ll forgive them.

You can see Samuel L. Jackson this weekend taking on the king of the apes known as King Kong. Jackson’s military character in Kong: Skull Island has some beef with the monster who traps him and his surviving unit on the mysterious island full of monsters, and he definitely goes a little off the rails before all is said and done.

One of the many ’80s things I’m nostalgic for is the iconic HBO opening that would play before their feature presentations. For me in the ’80s, seeing movies meant one of three things: going to the multiplex, watching a movie on VHS from the local rental store, Video Paradise, or sitting down on Friday or Saturday night with my family to watch the big new movie on HBO. For me, that HBO Feature Presentation opening was like a magic gateway and I often revisit that iconic opening on YouTube, as silly as that sounds.

Now HBO has teamed with Imaginary Forces to re-create that iconic opening for a new generation. Check it out now below!

New HBO Opening

The new sequence debuted this weekend in front of Saturday’s first run of X-Men: Apocalypse and launches today across all cable, digital and streaming platforms. The new sequence, directed by Dan Gregoras from Imaginary Forces, employs “a range of skillsets and production methodologies: combining live action talent photography with complex CG environments and a newly interpreted score to create something immersive and magical.”

For comparison purposes, here is the classic HBO Feature Presentation opening sequence, which debuted in 1983 and opened all First-Run features and feature presentations.

I don’t think that this new opening captures the same magic of the original, complete with the miniatures and animation, but it’s good to hear the classic music reimagined for a new generation. If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic like me, watch a video on how the original opening was created over 30 years ago:

Imaginary Forces Co-Founder Peter Frankfurt says of the new version:

“One of the real challenges was referencing the [1980s] original but not being nostalgic. What we wanted to do is to capture that sense of wonder and wow. That’s not a nostalgic feeling, that’s a present day feeling – so we had to make something fairly technologically advanced, but also authentic.”

Joel Beckerman’s Man Made Music adapted the original score, which was re-recorded with a full orchestra. According to Beckerman:

“Everyone knows the iconic HBO theme, and it was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to transform it once again, this time with the IF team. We knew that we had to help bring IF’s stunning visual reimagining to life, while also creating something that would stand on its own musically. This led us to augment the orchestra with many layers of organic and synthetic texture to help sonically bring the theme into the future while keeping one foot grounded in HBO’s legacy. We’re so proud of the work we did together with IF.”

In Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron created one of the greatest action heroines of all time with Imperator Furiosa. So, no pressure on secret agent Lorraine Broughton, her character in the new Cold War spy thriller Atomic Blonde. However, if Theron is going to create another truly great cinematic badass, teaming up with one of the minds behind John Wick is a great start.

The first Atomic Blonde trailer has arrived ahead of its debut at the SXSW Film Festival this weekend and you can watch it below.

Based on Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest Winter, Atomic Blonde drops Theron into the powder keg that is Berlin, Germany in 1989, on the eve of Berlin Wall’s collapse. While the Cold War may be nearing its end, there are still plenty of bad guys to punch and plenty of bones to break and plenty of “impossible” missions to accomplish. James McAvoy plays a follow English agent who helps Theron on the ground. Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, John Goodman, and Sofia Boutella round out the cast.

And this is a restricted “red band” trailer, so don’t watch this one at work.

When we got our first look at Atomic Blonde earlier this week, where director David Leitch said all of the things that you’d expect the co-director of the first John Wick to say. Specifically, he noted how Theron’s dance training made her ideal for long action shots and complex choreography, which is the exact kind of thing you want to hear in an age where most movie action is chopped to bits to hide the fact that no one on screen knows what they’re doing. Theron’s intense training regimen took its toll, as she told Entertainment Weekly:

Let’s be honest, I got my ass handed to me every day. I cracked through two of my teeth in the back of my mouth from clenching so much that I had to have massive dental surgery right before we left for Budapest to shoot the film.

Atomic Blonde screens at SXSW in just a few days, but it doesn’t open in theaters until July 28, 2017. Does that indicate a sign of confidence from the studio? We’ll be at the premiere this weekend and will let you know.

The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. The sheer amount of material that Netflix gives us means that sometimes we forget that things are coming until they remind us. This time it’s  Mystery Science Theater 3000 that they reminded us about, with a post of a cast photo to facebook. The release date for the revival of the series is set for April 14th and features an impressive cast of very funny people including Jonah Ray, Hampton Yount, Baron Vaughn, Felicia Day, and Patton Oswalt.

Old And New Faces In This ‘MST3K’ Photo From Netflix

Bad news for all you dyed in the wool baseball purists out there, according to what sources are telling Howard Bryant of ESPN the Magazine, effective for the 2017 season, Major League Baseball will switch to an electronic dugout signal for Intentional Walks rather than the traditional four ball pitchout.

The change in the intentional-walk rule was proposed by MLB to the Players Association earlier in the year and it will end the long-standing practice of requiring the pitcher to toss four soft pitches outside the strike zone to his catcher.

Now, a team could just signify it wants to issue an intentional walk by activating an electronic dugout signal that would send the hitter directly to first base.

Sad… No but seriously, this will do absolutely nothing to shorten the length of games. Intentional walks were never the problem.
