Artist draws silly new heads for his fellow commuters

Here's a fun game that October Jones plays when he's on the train: 1) Pick another passenger. 2) Choose a fictional character that you think matches the passenger or their attire. 3) Sketch that character's head on a sticky note. 4) Ignore the stares from everyone else as you chuckle to yourself.

‘Drive Hard’ Trailer: John Cusack Makes Thomas Jane His Getaway Driver

by Germain Lussier

Drive Hard

A former racing champion turned driving instructor is forced into being a getaway driver in Drive Hard, the latest film from the director of Leprechaun 4: In Space. But before you back away slowly from this post while laughing madly, know that the race-car driver is played by Thomas Jane and the bank robber is played by John Cusack.

Directed by cult filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith, Voltage Pictures will release Drive Hard later this year and a trailer has now come online. Check it out below.

Thanks to The Playlist for the heads up.

If you’re like me, you’re a little dumbfounded by that trailer. The casting of Cusack and Jane should suggest it’s a good movie, but neither has exhibited the best choices over the past few years. (Consider I, Frankenstein and The Raven, etc.) Trenchard-Smith’s filmography doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence, but his films can be entertaining and he does have a bit of a following (BMX Bandits forever). This could go either way. I tend to think Cusack and Jane still have some goodwill built up from over the years, the high-concept idea of the film plus a penchant for loving car movies makes me say, ultimately, I’m interested. What do you think?

Here’s the official plot description of Drive Hard:

American thief, Simon Keller (Cusack), arrives in a foreign country in need of a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the underworld, he takes a driving lesson from ex F-1 champion, Peter Roberts (Jane), now working as a driving instructor. After Keller robs a bank during the lesson, Roberts has no choice, but to use his driving talent to get away from pursuing police and mobsters.

Cool Stuff: Aled Lewis’ ‘Such Pixels’ Exhibit At Gallery 1988

by Germain Lussier

Aled Lewis - Happy Gilmore

UK artist Aled Lewis is a relative newcomer in terms of mainstream pop culture art, but he’s about to become a household name. Previously, he’d done a few brilliant Edgar Wright pieces for Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles (among others) and now the gallery that all but started the craze is featuring Lewis’ first solo exhibit. And it looks insane.

The exhibit is called Such Pixels and will open February 7 at Gallery 1988 West. The first few teases of the show just came online and while I’d normally wait for a few more images before writing about the show, these images are so beyond cool I figured you had to see them. That’s just one above. (From Happy Gilmore, of course.) Below, check out some even more amazing images blending movies and video games.

Gallery 1988 says the following about the exhibit:

I’d be nervous to overhype this show that opens Friday night at G1988 (West) with Aled Lewis’s first solo show, “Such Pixels,” but it’s humanly impossible. In the tradition of Olly Moss’s “Paper Cuts” and Mike Mitchell’s “Just Like Us,” Aled has produced an overwhelming amount of pop culture / video game inspired work, broken into different series (the 3 above are part of a larger section, while the Tecmo Bowl x Forrest Gump piece is part of a different series), with each piece being smarter and wittier than the next.

Here are the images they teased.

Aled Lewis - Happy Gilmore Aled Lewis - Always Sunny Aled Lewis - BTTF Aled Lewis - Tecmo Gump Aled Lewis - Thelma Outrun

Yes, that’s Forrest Gump reimagined as Tecmo Bowl.

We’ve seen plenty of movies reimagined as 8-bit games online, but I think Lewis’ vision elevates the concept. His interpretations have a unique 8-bit look, but also are instantly recognizable as the films. That creates a level of beauty you don’t get in a general mashup. He’s also picking subjects we don’t see too often, at least in these teases. Back to the Future aside, how many Happy Gilmore or Thelma & Louise posters do you ever see?

Such Pixels opens from 7-10 p.m. February 7 at Gallery 1988 West, 7308 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA. It’ll remain on display through March 1. Visit www.gallery1988.com for more info and that’s where any leftovers will go on sale February 8.

Oh, and just because, here are some old Lewis’ works NOT in this show. The guy is a talent:

DC Comic ‘DMZ’ Coming To SyFy From ‘Mad Men’ And ‘Gravity’ Producers

by Germain Lussier

DMZ

After the second American Civil War, Manhattan is classified an independent demilitarized zone, also referred to as the DMZ. There, a photojournalist is stranded and becomes embroiled in complex politics and warring factions. That’s the plot of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli‘s DC Comic DMZ, which ran from 2005 to 2012. Now, the story is coming to the small screen via some big screen talent. Former Mad Men executive producers Andre and Maria Jacquemetton have teamed with Harry Potter and Gravity producer David Heyman to bring the comic series to the SyFy network at a TV show.

Deadline broke the news of the deal. The Jacquemettons, who left Mad Men after last season, will write the pilot. There’s no guarantee it makes the air as the show is in very early stages of development but, with these people behind it, odds are it’ll see the light of day.

If this is the first you’ve heard of this comic, it’s hard to deny the premise sounds tailor-made for TV. It blends drama, action, sci-fi and political issues in a context that’s incredibly open ended. And while I’ve never gotten into a show on SyFy, eventually they’re going to have a super crossover like those enjoyed by HBO, AMC and FX. Maybe this will be it.

Have you read DMZ? What do you think of this team?

James Franco Will Direct Film Based on Making of ‘The Room’

by Germain Lussier

Alex Pardee - Disaster Artist header

When Tommy Wiseau set out to make The Room, he never thought it would come to this. Or maybe, in his wild mind, he did. Wiseau famously made “the worst movie ever” around 2003. In the decade since, The Room has become a midnight cult classic. Actor Greg Sestero bore witness to the whole thing, playing Wiseau’s character’s best friend, Mark. Years later, he wrote a fantastic book about the experience, called The Disaster Artist.

Here’s where it gets really crazy. James Franco has now purchased the rights to The Disaster Artist. He’ll direct, produce and co-star in an adaptation of the book, and the film will also be produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Deadline broke the news of this deal. Ryan Moody will write the script and according to Franco’s Instagram, he and his brother Dave Franco will star in the film (as Tommy and Greg, one would venture to guess.)

James Franco has been a fan of Sestero’s book for a while, reviewing it on Vice back in December. Here’s a quote:

The book reads like the combination of two Paul Thomas Anderson film scripts: Boogie Nights in its focus on a group of optimistic outsiders trying to be artistic with a project that defies all artistic pretentions, and The Master with its arrangement around a bizarre mentor-pupil relationship….Because this book, The Disaster Artist, is about a bad movie, and because Tommy Wiseau could be so easily mocked, one can see how such a book could turn into a thin recounting of all the crazy things that happened, simply to make fun of them. Instead the book is both a great portrayal of hopefuls coming to Los Angeles to pursue their ambitions, and an even greater examination of what it means to be a creative person with a dream, and trying to make it come true in a form that is just as much a business, and an insider social group, as it is an art.

That makes it sound like, in his adaptation, Franco will delve a little bit deeper into the story; he won’t simply recreate the film shoot and poke fun at Tommy Wiseau. And that’s surely a good thing.

Oh, and that image at the top is part of a poster artist Alex Pardee did to go with this announcement. Not a casting confirmation. Hilarious stuff.

Alex Pardee - Disaster Artist

With the involvement of Franco, Rogen and Goldberg, this is a project we’ll keep a close eye on. Are you excited at the prospect?

LOL: ‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas’ TV Edit Notes

by Germain Lussier

Harold Kumar Christmas

Joking about TV edits of R-rated movies is a tried and true Internet tradition. Lines like “Yippie-Ki-Yay Mr. Falcon” and the use of “melonfarmer” will forever live in our memory banks. However, while the results of TV edits are fairly prominent online, the process to get there is usually masked.

Director Todd Strauss-Schulson pulled back that curtain every so slightly on Instagram this week. He showed a list of notes given that needed to be changed on a TV version of his R-rated comedy A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas and it’s pretty damn funny. Check it out below.

Thanks to @straussschulson for the image.

‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ Beefs Up Its Cast With ‘Independence Day’ Stars

by Germain Lussier

sharknado

The cast of Sharknado 2: The Second One is getting as big as a great white. Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch, who previously shared the screen in Independence Day, have joined the cast along with Andy Dick, Judah Friedlander, Mark McGrath and Kelly Osborne. Those six will appear with original holdovers Tara Reid and Ian Ziering for what’s sure to be a film as crazy as the original. Filming begins next week. Read more about the roles below.

Deadline broke the news of the roles. Here’s how it breaks down.

  • Vivica A. Fox is Fin’s (Ziering) high school friend, Skye.
  • Mark McGrath is Fin’s brother-in-law.
  • Kelly Osbourne is a flight attendant.
  • Andy Dick is a police officer.
  • Judah Friedlander is someone named Brian.
  • Judd Hirsch is a taxi driver.

Yup. Director Anthony Ferrante has assembled quite the eclectic ensemble. Sharknado 2: The Second One will take the terrible weather to the island of Manhattan. The aim is for the film to air on SyFy sometime in July. Will you be watching?
