Newest Glass Trailer Blurs the Line Between Fantasy and Reality

by Charles Pulliam-Moore

One of the most interesting questions about M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming Glass feature is just how big the film’s stakes are going to get, considering that it features on a evil super genius, an unbreakable man, and a being who might as well be a near-invulnerable demon. There are a number of directions the movie…

Jason Momoa and Co Did the Haka at ‘Aquaman’ Premiere

by Mary Anne Butler

Shocking no one, Jason Momoa‘s crew rolled deep at the Los Angeles premiere of Aquaman. So deep in fact that the King of Atlantis and co took to the ocean blue carpet to perform a traditional Haka.

Photo courtesy of the “Aquaman” Twitter account

You can see Temuera Morrison there, he plays Arthur Curry’s father in James Wan’s film, right next to Momoa’s two children.

This is not the first time we’ve seen Morrison engage in a pretty compelling Haka- back in 2017 at HawaiiCon, he and his Star Wars son Daniel Logan (Morrsion played Jango Fett, Logan played young Boba Fett) treated the audience to a version of the traditional war cry. [Editor’s note: the author of this piece was the moderator for the panel, and took the video on her phone.]

Also, HOW GORGEOUS are Nicole Kidman and Amber Herd?

Aquaman swims into theaters in the US on December 21st 2018.

This set of actors joins the already announced cast of Pedro Pascal in the lead role of The Mandalorian– the lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. He’s joined by Gina Carano, and Nick Nolte.

Yes

In a world where William Shatner has a Christmas album featuring duets with Iggy Pop (on “Silent Night”) and Henry Rollins (on “Jingle Bells”), it was only a matter of time before a new holiday hero would arise- The Predator.

This particular alien-holiday special pays homage to such classics as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Jack Frost, and is disturbingly awesome:

The Predator Holiday Special is set to air on Comedy Central on December 19th 2018.

So About Those Netflix Marvel Series Appearing on Disney+ Any Time Soon…

by Ray Flook

Appears an update about the future of Netflix‘s Marvel’s The Defenders has shed a whole lot of light on the near-future lives of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. Entertainment news agency Variety reported exclusively earlier today that the deal for the original four Marvel shows included a clause that prevented the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation.

marvel netflix series disney
Netflix

So what the means for Netflix’s recently-cancelled Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist is that those characters would not be able to appear on the Disney+ streaming service until 2020 at the earliest. Even if Disney does make the move to get the band back together in 2020, they’ll be doing it without one of their main members: Jessica Jones is set to air its third season on Neflix some time in 2019. Even with a highly-likely cancellation notice looming on the horizon, the character would be stuck in non-Netflix limbo until some time in 2021.

Then there’s The Punisher, a Marvel-Netflix series that was not part of the original deal. Jon Bernthal‘s way-over-compensating vigilante/life coach was introduced during the second-season of Daredevil before spinning-off into a solo series. The second season of The Punisher is set set to debut in January 2019, with the future of the series uncertain after that – though with the direction the previous Marvel series have taken, most expect The Punisher to follow closely behind.

Disney’s Disney+ streaming service has already lined up several original shows, including limited series focusing on characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe; including Loki, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and the Winter Solider. The new service has also lined up live-action Star Wars shows The Mandalorian starring Pedro Pascal and a Cassian Andor series that has Diego Luna reprising his Rogue One role.

Marvel and Netflix have not commented on the matter.

Cary Fukunaga Talks Bond 25 Rumors, and Continuing the Arc From ‘Casino Royale’

by Chris Evangelista

bond 25 rumors

Cary Joji Fukunaga will soon be bringing his considerable talents to Bond 25, having replaced previous director Danny Boyle. While Bond 25 is still very much in development, rumors regarding the plot have already sprung up. Rumors that Fukunaga has no problem shooting down. But while the specifics of Bond 25 are still a secret, Fukunaga has confirmed that the film will still be following the arc that started with Casino Royale.

If you thought that Bond 25 might attempt to start things fresh, think again. According to director Cary Joji Fukunaga, the latest adventure of 007 will be very much in-line with the story that began in Casino Royale. During an interview with Inquirer.net, the Bond helmer offered some vague insight into how the story is being approached:

“In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with ‘Casino Royale,’ and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative.”

What arc is Fukunaga talking about here, though? Bond’s continued learning curve? Or his regret over the death of Vesper? Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both complemented each other – they felt like they were telling similar stories. But Skyfall changed things up. Bond no longer seemed new to the job – he was older, more haggard, more tired. And then came Spectre, which…well, I don’t even know what that movie was doing, because it wasn’t very good. I suppose the big takeaway here is that Fukunaga is confirming he’s not going to change things drastically. In other words, don’t expect Bond 25 to feel like a reboot.

Also: don’t believe everything you read online. There have been rumors that neither master villain Blofeld (played by Christoph Waltz in Spectre) and gadget nerd Q (Ben Whishaw) would return for the next installment. But according to Fukunaga, no one can know that for sure:

“Who is saying those rumors? We haven’t finished the screenplay, so there is no way that anyone could know that. Those are two extraordinary actors, so if there is space for them in the story, I would absolutely want them there. But I don’t know yet what it’s going to be.”

Waltz has said in the past that he’s not coming back, but that was before Fukunaga came on board. Things change, so don’t count him out yet.

Bond 25 opens on February 14, 2020.

Big Mouth Gets Season 3 Pick-Up, Promises “Puberty Gets Even Messier” (VIDEO)

by Ray Flook

Comedian/actor Nick Kroll (The League), Family Guy‘s Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy), and screenwriter-directors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett have the green light to unleash the Hormone Monsters on Andrew, Nick, and the rest of Netflix‘s Big Mouth for a third season. Inspired by Kroll and Goldberg’s survival through puberty, the adult animated comedy series follows a group of middle schoolers who battle with the emotional baggage that comes with growing up, including hormones at full tilt and the awkward realities of self-discovery, body image shame, sex ed classes and more.

Executive produced by Kroll, Goldberg, Levin, and Flackett, Big Mouth boasts a voice cast that includes John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele, Jason Mantzoukas, and Jenny Slate. The second season also introduced Gina Rodriguez as Gina Alvarez and David Thewlis as the Hormone Monster’s sworn enemy, the Shame Wizard.

Here’s a look ay Netflix’s official announcement video for Big Mouth season 3 – one that comes with a warning:

Before the show’s premiere, Kroll spoke with GQ about the title, how the concepts behind the series are very personal to him, and how they impacted him on a number of levels growing up:

“I always physically had a big mouth. If you look at pictures of me from childhood, it’s like I’m all mouth and forehead, I guess not that much has changed. So, that’s the literal meaning of it, but the metaphorical meaning is, I think, that I had a big mouth. I just was a little guy and a bit of a shit talker and the show is based on me and my best friend from childhood, Andrew Goldberg. We met in first grade, became best friends around middle school, and then have stayed close throughout.

Andrew was ravished by puberty. He had a beard at 13. His dad made his mom wax his upper lip. He slow danced with a girl and came in his pants at a bar mitzvah. I was a very late bloomer. I didn’t get my first pube until probably high school.

This is a show about two boys who were best friends and shared everything, except physically they were in very different places.”

‘Doctor Sleep’ Will Reunite Jacob Tremblay with Director Mike Flanagan

by Chris Evangelista

doctor sleep cast jacob tremblay

Room‘s Jacob Tremblay is the latest addition to Mike Flanagan‘s Doctor Sleep cast. This marks a reunion for the two – Tremblay appeared in Flanagan’s horror film Before I Wake. The film is an adaptation of Stephen King‘s sequel to The Shining, focusing on an adult Danny Torrance (played by Ewan McGregor). Tremblay’s role is unknown at this time – could he be playing the younger Danny in flashbacks? Maybe!

Will we soon be hearing Jacob Tremblay croaking “Redrum!”? That’s my guess. TMZ says the young actor has joined the Doctor Sleep cast in an unknown role, and as most of the parts for the film have already been cast, there’s a good chance Tremblay is playing the younger Danny Torrance. While Doctor Sleep primarily focuses on Danny as an adult, there are flashbacks to the younger Danny we met in The ShiningDoctor Sleep has already begun filming, so Tremblay coming onto the project this late definitely suggests his part is small. With all this in mind, I think it’s safe to assume he’s playing the young Danny. Of course, that could always turn out to be wrong.

In Doctor Sleep, Danny Torrance becomes the protector of a young girl who has the same “shining” powers as he did as a child. The girl is being stalked by a nomadic cult of “psychic vampires” who want to feed on the girl’s abilities. Kyliegh Curran is Abra, the girl in dange. Rebecca Ferguson is portraying Rose, the leader of the cult. Other cast members include Carl LumblyAlex EssoeZahn McClarnon and Bruce Greenwood, another actor who has worked with Flanagan before.

Flanagan is coming off of the success of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, and while I’m not a big fan of Doctor Sleep (despite being a big fan of Stephen King), I have faith the filmmaker will turn it into something worth watching.

Here’s the lengthy synopsis of the Doctor Sleep novel:

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the Stephen King canon.

Doctor Sleep opens on January 24, 2020.

Mike Myers Reprises Dr. Evil for ‘Tonight Show’ Election Skit

by Tom Chang

Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Mike Myers revived a pop culture icon in advance of today’s election on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Despite the last Austin Powers film released 16 years ago, Myers, who played the title character, has made the occasional appearance as Powers’ arch nemesis, Dr. Evil. The timing of the appearances  relates to contemporary politics stemming from the character’s return on Saturday Night Live three years ago and a prior appearance on The Tonight Show, seven months ago.

While the primary jabs have made light of the GOP, the focus of last night’s return focused on Dr. Evil deciding to run for Congress. Instead of running as a Democrat or Republican, he’ll opt to run as an “Eviltarian.” Aside from the reference to Donald Trump, Jr. as part of Evil’s five-point plan, the tone was decidedly neutral underlining the difficult polarizing times we live in while attempting to win the audience over with a “Make America Evil Again,” spoofing Trump’s campaign slogan.

The bit ran a bit longer with some awkwardness in between as Myers and Jimmy Fallon reached at times for a few forced, polite laughs, a common staple during their respective SNL runs.
Never too shy from trying to fit as many pop culture references, Dr. Evil referred himself as “White Cory Booker” and mentioned Tide pods, Fortnite, the Shiggy Challenge, and the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings.

Dr. Evil’s five-point plan includes making Screaming Dill Pickle the only flavor of Pringles; appoint Trump, Jr. to be Secretary of the Treasury because he looks like he’s made of dough; legalizing marijuana, increasing ad time before a user can skip prior to a YouTube video, and changing the national anthem to “Johny Johny Yes Papa.”

Mike, can you just make Austin Powers 4 already?!

Luther Season 5: Idris Elba’s John Luther Gets Stunning Surprise (PREVIEW)

by Ray Flook

London has one of its greatest protectors back, taking on the evils that the streets spew out. Though it’s been awhile since Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) first announced that Detective John Luther was “back in London, back in the coat,” fans of BBC One‘s Luther are getting an early holiday present with a sneak preview of the upcoming season. Wit hte new season serving as a co-production between BBC Studios and BBC America, Jamie Payne (The Alienist, White Princess) has been tapped to direct all four episodes; with Elba, creator Neil Cross, Marcus Wilson, Hilary Salmon and Elizabeth Kilgarriff set as executive producers.

luther season 5 preview
BBC

In the following scene, Luther finds himself in a typical Luther situation: tied to a chair with a gun to his head and a taser ready to make contact with his chest. Gangster George Cornelius’ (Patrick Malahide) son Alastair has gone missing – and Cornelius thinks Luther’s got something to do with it. But while most would be concerned about the game of “Russian Roulette” taking place along the side of their heads… this is Luther, people! He’s more concerned with figuring out why his name ended up in the middle of a missing persons case of this caliber:

BBC

As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday [played by Black Mirror‘s Wunmi Mosaku] are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. But, even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.

Ruth Wilson‘s Alice will be returning this season (???), as will Dermot Crowley‘s DSU Martin Schenk, Michael Smiley‘s Benny Silver, and Malahide‘s George Cornelius. Mosaku won a BAFTA in 2017 for her performance in BBC’s Damilola, Our Loved Boy, and can be seen in Channel 4’s Kiri and Netflix’s The End of the F—ing World.

‘Labyrinth’ Sequel Has a Script Says Freddie Alvarez

by Mary Anne Butler

Rumblings of a sequel to the much-beloved film Labyrinth seem to happen every few years, and director Freddie Alvarez says it’s closer than you may think.

There was a story a few years back that made the rounds about a reboot of the classic, which was quickly amended to be “another film within the world” rather than an outright redo. Which would be nice- the magic of those Jim Henson created Brian Froud designs being as timeless as they are.

Last we heard, there was some development happening on the Labyrinth film-front, but things were pushed back when Netflix picked up other Henson fantasy series property The Dark Crystal, which will be coming to the streaming service as a series called Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance sometime in 2019 (hopefully).

Just this weekend, Freddie Alvarez offered an update on how things are progressing on his Labyrinth film while speaking with Fandango:

“I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life. But that’s one of the projects that I’m very excited about.”Rumblings of a sequel to the much-beloved film Labyrinth seem to happen every few years, and director Freddie Alvarez says it’s closer than you may think.

Needless to say, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more about this project. Alvarez’s next big feature The Girl In The Spider’s Web hits theaters on November 9th.

We May Be Getting Critters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space Revivals on Syfy

by Jeremy Konrad

Everything old is new again. In the world of horror at least. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Syfy is trying to secure the rights to make new films in the Critters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space franchises. This follows their revival of the Leprechaun series that debuts in March 2019. Both have been dormant fro quite some time, Killer Clowns longer. Both are beloved by horror fans for different reasons, and both were notable for their achievements in practical effects at the time of their releases.

Critters Still

The Critters film series has seen four films released, which will also see release in a Blu-ray box set later this year from Scream Factory. The only one really worth a damn is the first one, although the others have a certain charm to them. The last film in the series released in 1992.

Killer Clowns From Outer Space Still

Killer Klowns From Outer Space however released in 1988 and features some of the most terrifying depictions of clowns you can imagine. I was super scared of this film well into adulthood, and the thought of seeing them onscreen again is not a pleasant one. The theme song kicks ass though. If you have NOT seen this, here is the trailer:

When teenagers Mike (Grant Cramer) and Debbie (Suzanne Snyder) see a comet crash outside their sleepy small town, they investigate and discover a pack of murderous aliens who look very much like circus clowns. They try to warn the local authorities, but everyone assumes their story is a prank. Meanwhile, the clowns set about harvesting and eating as many people as they can. It’s not until they kidnap Debbie that Mike decides it’s up to him to stop the clowns’ bloody rampage.

The Chiodo Brothers, the creators and directors of the first film, have been trying since the release of the first one to get something else off the ground, from tv series to film sequels. This may be the closest they have come, and fans will be pumped if this happens. This one has a huge cult following, and would fully support this I am sure. As long as they keep the theme, all will be good.

Look for more news as things are confirmed.

In other WHY DON’T WE HAVE SITE-TO-SITE TRANSPORTERS YET news for this October, 20th Century Fox’s Queen biopic film Bohemian Rhapsody will have it’s world premiere at London’s historic Wembley.

L-R: Gwilym Lee (Brian May), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), and Joe Mazzello (John Deacon) star in Twentieth Century Fox’s BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Photo Credit: Courtesy Twentieth Century Fox.

For fans of Queen, you know the significance of the location to the band, Wembley Stadium the site of the ground-breaking Live Aid concert in 1985. Unfortunately, the premiere will NOT be taking place in the Stadium, but instead in the Arena, which is still pretty awesome.

Starring Rami Maleck as Queen’s legendary frontman Freddie Mercury, the film was originally directed by Bryan Singer, but completed by Dexter Fletcher. Singer will retain credit however, due to how much of the film was completed at the time of his firing.

Bohemian Rhapsody also stars Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin (Mercury’s lifelong companion), Gwilym Lee as Brian May (Queen’s lead guitarist), Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor (Queen’s drummer), Joseph Mazzello as John Deacon (Queen’s bass guitarist), and Aidan Gillen as John Reid (Queen’s second manager).

The official soundtrack just released over the weekend, featuring some never before released tracks from the Live Aid concert.

Bohemian Rhapsody hits theaters on November 2nd, 2018.

Marvel’s Hip Hop Variants to Appear on Actual Hip Hop Albums

by Jude Terror

As the snake that is the comic book industry continues to swallow its own tail, Universal Music Enterprises has announced plans to produce version of classic hip hop albums featuring the Marvel Comics variant covers produced for comic books which homaged classic hip hop album covers. A union between the comic book industry and the music industry seems like a no-brainer, with both industries basing their success on decades of exploiting creative talent for corporate gain, both industries going seemingly out of their way to make digital purchases as unattractive as possible until piracy was completely out of control, and both industries maintaining a long history of attempting to get customers to buy multiple copies of things they already own by repackaging them in new formats and/or with new covers. The ongoing collaboration between UMe’s “urban catalog platform” Urban Legends and Marvel Comics will start with three covers, hitting stores on December 7th: Get Rich or Die Tryin‘ by 50 Cent, Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J, and Liquid Swords by GZA.

Released in 2003 by Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, 50 Cent’s debut, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, was the year’s bestselling album worldwide. It stormed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with more than 872,000 copies sold during its first week of release. Featuring the acclaimed No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles “In da Club” and “21 Questions,” and the Top 5 “P.I.M.P.,” the album is six-times platinum-certified by the RIAA. The exclusive hip-hop variant cover inspired by this album was originally drawn and colored by Brian Stelfreeze for Invincible Iron Man #1 in 2015.

LL Cool J’s fourth studio album, Mama Said Knock You Out, drew praise from critics worldwide, lauding the album’s hard-hitting, soulful jams. Released in 1990 by Def Jam, the multi-platinum album’s chart-topping and GRAMMY®-winning title track is an iconic hip-hop staple. The exclusive hip-hop variant cover inspired by this album was originally drawn and colored by Tim Bradstreet for Punisher #1 in 2016.

Released in 1995 by Geffen, GZA’s second solo studio album, Liquid Swords, peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The platinum-certified album is critically acclaimed, recognized as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time and as a particularly strong solo release by a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. The exclusive hip-hop variant cover inspired by this album was originally drawn by Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz and colored by Chris Sotomayor for Contest of Champions #1 in 2015.

To illustrate exactly how these variant covers capture the true spirit of Hip Hop, three executives from the two corporations provided statements. Said UMe President and CEO Bruce Resnikoff:

Marvel comics have always occupied a special place in the hearts of hip-hop fans – both media continue to serve as source of expression, escapism and inspiration for generations of super fans around the world.

And head of Urban Legends Andre Torres:

There is an undeniable heroism that consistently runs through the veins of both art forms and I’m excited to help weave these iconic narratives together in a way that celebrates their art and introduces new fans to their genius.

And Marvel Executive Director of Business development Daniel Fink:

Marvel’s hip-hop variant covers celebrated the music industry in a whole new way, combining the creativity of original album art and the Marvel Universe to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art. We’re excited to collaborate with UMe to bring these variants back for fans of these iconic albums.

Word.

Here’s some more info on what you get for your $40-$60:

Nice.

Season 4 of Netflix series Narcos is coming, and we’ve got to agree that Diego Luna is pretty f***ing terrifying in the full-length trailer released today.

The 4th season of the series is titled Narcos: Mexico, and will reportedly take place in Mexico during the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the ’80s. The series will also show how that rise led to the modern drug war that nearly tore the country apart.

Luna plays Félix Gallardo, a ruthless drug lord who will face off against  Michael Peña‘s character, DEA agent Kiki Camarena.

As Kiki gathers intelligence on Gallardo, he quickly realizes that this assignment is more challenging than he could have ever imagined. Especially since a tragic chain of events will lead to a huge conflict that lasts for years to come.

Narcos: Mexico is set to hit Netflix on November 16th, 2018.
