As The Boys Wraps Season 1 Filming, Did Karl Urban Confirm Season 2?

by Ray Flook
Corey

Yes.

Less then two weeks after executive producer/showrunner Eric Kripke, executive producer Evan Goldberg, and stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Laz Alonso, Antony Star, Chace Crawford, and Erin Moriarty – and surprise guest Simon Pegg – lept tall buildings in a single bound to make it out to New York Comic Con’s (NYCC) Hammerstein Ballroom, Amazon Studios‘ adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s comic book series The Boys has wrapped filming.

On Monday, Kripke tweet-announced that he completed his directing duties on the season finale – along with an image of Starlight/Annie (Moriarty) from what we can presume is that very episode:

Urban also took to social media on Monday to celebrate the end of season filming – and to possibly let slip that the series has been renewed for a second season already? While it could easily be written off as “wishful thinking,” the line “…and I look forward to seeing you for S2 next year” seems specific enough to give the impression that a season 2 order is already in play but being held back until closer to the series premiere.

For Moriarty and Quaid, it’s saying goodbye to castmates and friends – while for Starr, it’s one last chance to offer a bit of a dissenting opinion:

F**k boys.

A post shared by Antony Starr (@toni.starr) on

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, THE BOYS centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. THE BOYS is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes.

On the side of The Boys, Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher is mysterious and brutal, hiding a personal agenda as he approaches potential new recruit Hughie (Jack Quaid), claiming to be a shadowy government operative. Butcher capitalizes on Hughie’s rage over his girlfriend Robin’s accidental death at the hands of Superhero A-Train and enlists Hughie as part of his plan to bring down the super-hero franchise.

Rounding out Butcher’s team are Laz Alonso (The Mysteries of Laura) as second-in-command Mother’s Milk; Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad) as The Female, a young Asian assassin with blistering fighting skills who happens to have superpowers; and Tomer Capon as unpredictable wild card Frenchie, a brutal warrior when who lives a life of no attachments or responsibilities.

boys season 1 filming wraps season 2

On the flip side, The Seven are Antony Starr (American Gothic) as Homelander, leader of the main superhero team, The Seven; Dominique McElligott (The Last Tycoon) as Queen Maeve, a member of The Seven; Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) as The Seven member The Deep, an aquatic hero; Jesse T. Usher (Survivor’s Remorse) as speedster with a major PR problem, A-Train; and Nathan Mitchell (iZombie) as Black Noir, a masked superhero with fighting and Set martial arts skills.

Erin Moriarty (Jessica Jones) joins the cast as Starlight/Annie, a young woman who can make lightning bolts flash from her eyes and dreams of being a “real superhero” like the famous Seven; Elisabeth Shue‘s (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Karate Kid) super-hero handler Madelyn Stillwell is the Vice President of Hero Management for Vought and the person responsible for cleaning up after the “heroes.” Jennifer Esposito (NCIS, Blindspot) has also been cast in the recurring role of CIA Agent Susan Raynor, with Billy Zane (Titanic) also set to make a guest appearance this season.

Red Wedding Brew: We Review Game Of Thrones’ Mother of Dragons Beer

by Gavin Sheehan

Every time we have the pleasure of receiving a new Game Of Thrones beer from Brewery Ommegang, it’s so tempting to just call the article “I Drink & I Know Things”. The wonderful people at HBO were kind enough to send us a bottle of their latest brew, this one called Mother of Dragons in a lovely red cover adorned by dragon heads and scales, as part of the Royal Reserve Collection. But while this may look promising on the outside, we needed to properly try it ourselves. So we grabbed a drinking buddy and enjoyed a bottle for review.

So starting with the look of it, this is actually a red-tinted porter blend that poured out of the bottle with a fine smokey scent. The head, as you can see here, is a golden tan that matches well with the pour. Immediately before you even take a sip, your nose is hit with this interesting cherry malt scent. It’s not overpowering, but it’s enough to make you do a double take and make sure you’re drinking beer. The taste had this great mix of coco/cherry with just the right amount of hops to give it a smooth texture going down. This isn’t a fruit-specific beer like you might expect it to be like some of the others have been in the past, there’s enough there to give you an enticing flavor, but that porter hits you immediately after.

Having tried Mother of Dragons out with a couple of cheeses, I must say, this is one of the better Game Of Thrones brews we’ve had from Brewery Ommegang. Everything about it is subtle and slightly deceiving. You think you’re going to get one kind of beer out of this combination, but then you drink it and it hits you and takes you by surprise. It’s not too bitter or sweet, it has that nice middle ground where you could drink it alone or with food and have it be fantastic either way. By far one of the smoothest brews to ever go down the pipe, did the job of making me slightly drunk but not tipsy, and that’s always great for a beer I would say is perfect for a social gathering.

That all being said, Mother of Dragons is a 6.5% beer at $13 a pop. For something only being made in a small quantity and having the Game Of Thrones logo on it, that’s a damn fine deal on a well-made beer. I highly suggest snatching up at least one bottle of this before it goes away, if for anything, just to try it out. I highly recommend cheesecake with it, just don’t take it to weddings.

Jordan Peele to Host, Narrate ‘The Twilight Zone’ Revival for CBS All Access (TEASER)

by Ray Flook

Looks like Jordan Peele (Get Out) won’t just be traveling through a dimension not only of sight and sound and mind – he’ll be leading the tour. And that signpost up ahead? That’s CBS announcing that the Academy Award winning screenwriter will take on the role of host and narrator of CBS All AccessThe Twilight Zone revival. Co-producing with Peele, Simon Kinberg, and CBS Television Sudios, Peele will be taking on the role originated and held by The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling during its 1959-1964 run.

Here’s a look at the announcement teaser released by CBS All Access – which also includes an audio sneak preview of Peele’s upcoming narration work:

“Too many times this year it’s felt we were living in a twilight zone, and I can’t think of a better moment to reintroduce it to modern audiences.” – Jordan Peele

Peele’s The Twilight Zone received an official series order from CBS All Access in December 2017, with the project being co-produced between Monkeypaw Productions and Genre Films. Peele and Kinberg will executive produce alongside Win Rosenfeld, Audrey Chon, Carol Serling, Rick Berg and Greg Yaitanes.

“The Twilight Zone was a touchstone in my life. The opportunity to continue its lineage is a dream come true, and I’m so thrilled to be doing it with Jordan, Marco, and the team at CBS All Access.” – Simon Kinberg

Interestingly enough, Peele wasn’t just initially reluctant to step into Serling’s hosting role for the updated series – he was hesitant to take on the The Twilight Zone revival itself. In an extended feature article/interview with Variety, Peele explained his initial resistance:

“I was terrified. Why would I ever jump into the most established, pristine shoes in all of the genre? I could rip ‘Twilight Zone’ off and call it something different and not be compared to Rod Serling. So I stepped away from it. And then several months later I got another call.”

Peele would go on to embrace the project, and the chance to continue the groundwork set by Serling’s original series:

“The realization, for me, was that it was an opportunity to attempt to continue with Serling’s mission. If we approach it without ego and sort of bow to Serling, that will hopefully suffice for our fellow ‘Twilight Zone’ fans but also bring back a show that I think is needed right now. Because it’s a show that has always helped us look at ourselves, hold a mirror up to society.”

First Look at Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers in Sony’s New Biopic

by Kaitlyn Booth

Earlier this year we a fantastic documentary about Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. However, despite that documentary being pretty much perfect, Sony Pictures has decided to make their own biopic version of this story and they chose pretty much the only person they could possibly cast for the role. The Hollywood Reporter shared a first look of Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers in the biopic titled You Are My Friend.

The outfit is right but it kind of just looks like Hanks dressed as Fred Rogers instead of Fred Rogers. We’ll have to see if he manages to nail the mannerism when we finally see some footage from this one.

Summary: The story of Fred Rogers, the honored host and creator of the popular children’s television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1968).

You Are My Friend, directed by Michelle Heller, stars Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper, and Noah Harpster. It will be released on October 18, 2019.

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Reunite in Slaughterhouse Rulez Trailer

by Tom Chapman
Corey

VERY excited for this!

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Reunite in Slaughterhouse Rulez Trailer

Comedy double act Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back together in the first trailer for director Crispian Mills’ horror comedy Slaughterhouse Rulez.

After starring together in such films as Shaun of the DeadHot Fuzz and The World’s End, Pegg and Frost are branching out beyond the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, and take the horror genre to a British boarding school.

The first full trailer fits Pegg’s promise of a subterranean monster movie as a group of teachers and students finds a terrifying sinkhole with a horde of ravenous creatures inside. Pegg plays teacher and cricket fanatic Meredith Houseman as he is dragged into the murky world of detention and demons. Frost is Woody, who seems to have more of an understanding of what horrors await Slaughterhouse School.

RELATED: Simon Pegg Opens Up About Depression & Alcoholism

The cast is rounded off by Asa Butterfield (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), Hermione Corfield (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon).

Pegg and Frost have worked together for years, and first rose to fame on the British comedy series Spaced. Although Pegg has gone on to find Hollywood stardom in the likes of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, he is heading back to his roots for Slaughterhouse Rulez.

With a similar vibe to 2011’s Attack the Block, only time will tell whether Mills’ movie can stand out from the rest of the crowd. Although there is no word from Sony about Slaughterhouse Rulez‘s U.S. release, it will hit U.K. cinemas on Oct. 31 — just in time for Halloween.Slaughterhouse Rulez poster

Peter Dinklage to Star in ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ Movie for Sony

by Chris Evangelista
Corey

For the video on the bottom.

Rumpelstiltskin movie

Ready for a big budget Rumpelstiltskin movie? Sure, why not! Let’s do this! Sony is going all-in on a film based on the fairy tale character, and they have Peter Dinklage in the lead. The Game of Thrones actor will star and produce the film, based on the legendary tale of a man who turns straw into gold and also wants to steal babies.

Variety has the scoop on the Rumpelstiltskin movie and Dinklage’s involvement. A Monster Calls writer Patrick Ness will pen the script. Plot details are being kept secret, because I guess no one wants to give away too much about the Rumpelstiltskin movie. The character has origins in German folklore, and was popularized by the Brothers Grimm in the 1812 edition of Children’s and Household Tales. Research indicates the core story is nearly 4000 years old, though.

In the Brothers Grimm version, a miller lies to the king and says, “Guess what – my daughter can spin straw into gold!” All things considered, this is a stupid thing to tell a king. The king falls for it though (people were dumb back then), and imprisons the miller’s daughter in a tower and orders her to get to work on that whole “straw into gold” thing. The young woman is understandably upset about all of this, and just when she’s lost all hope, who should show up but that asshole Rumpelstiltskin. Rumpelstiltskin has the power to turn straw into gold, and he offers to help the young woman – for a price. She’ll have to give him her first born child in return (this dude sounds like a creep). The only way the young woman can defeat Rumpelstiltskin is by learning his name.

This certainly sounds like blockbuster material, so I can understand why Sony wants to make this happen. Variety adds this interesting tidbit: “It’s unknown if the story will be set in modern times or its original setting.” Personally, I’m hoping for a modern-day retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, just because I really want to see what the heck that would look like.

Rumpelstiltskin was adapted into a really bad horror movie in 1995. In that film, Rumpelstiltskin is imprisoned in a small figurine in the 1400s, only to be revived in present day. Here’s the trailer.

Rumpelstiltskin Trailer

I’m not going to say this is a movie you need to seek out, but film does feature this amazing scene, which I really hope ends up in the Sony version as well.

FX’s Fargo Taps Chris Rock to Lead 1950’s Kansas City, Missouri Set Season 4

by Ray Flook
fargo season 4 chris rock fx
Credit: Netflix

And like that, we have a fourth season of FX‘s Fargo. As part of a series of announcements stemming from the cable network as part of their Television Critics Association’s (TCA) summer press tour event, FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf announced that comedian/actor/author Chris Rock (Top Five) will headline Noah Hawley‘s Emmy award-winning series as head of a crime family in 1950’s Kansas City, Missouri.

Here’s a look an overview of the upcoming season of Fargo:

In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations — that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the US at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago — and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities — you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream. In Kansas City, Missouri, two criminal syndicates have struck an uneasy peace. One Italian, one African American. Together they control an alternate economy — that of exploitation, graft and drugs. This too is the history of America. To cement their peace, the heads of both families have traded their eldest sons.

Rock plays the head of one family, a man who — in order to prosper — has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable. And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes.

It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.

The four-time Emmy winning, three-time Grammy winning, New York Times best-selling author recently completed his Total Blackout comedy tour (and serving as the basis for two Netflix standup specials, beginning with Tamborine). Recently, Rock reunited with Adam Sandler for the Netflix film The Week Of; and executive produced BET’s late-night talk show, The Rundown with Robin Thede.

Interestingly, Hawley wasn’t sure what direction the series would take if there was a fourth season of the series when he spoke to The New York Times in June 2017:

“I don’t. It’s a big challenge, every one of these — to come up with both a crime to hang it on and a large cast of characters on a collision course — each has to be new and interesting and have a different point of view. But we are exploring certain archetypes that are inescapable on a moral spectrum: There always has to be a Marge and a Jerry and a [Steve] Buscemi and a Peter Stormare, those kinds of pure good and pure evil and moral challenges in the middle. At a certain point, you don’t want to repeat yourself, so the question becomes: ‘What’s left to say? What’s interesting to say?’”

Michael Caine & Charlie Cox Plot a Heist in King of Thieves Trailer

by Sam Stone
Michael Caine & Charlie Cox Plot a Heist in King of Thieves Trailer

It looks like Alfred is teaming up with Daredevil and Professor Slughorn to stage a bold heist in the first trailer for King of Thieves.

The upcoming British crime film stars Academy Award winner Michael Caine leading an impressive cast including Charlie Cox, Jim Broadbent, and Ray Winstone as aging robbers looking to pull one last score on a jewelry vault. With exception of Cox, the career criminals face their own advanced age as they pull off the heist only to begin to turn on each other as they face pressure from the law led by Michael Gambon while trying to offload the stolen goods.

RELATED: Daredevil’s Charlie Cox Would Love to Team Up With Spider-Man

“We go down the shaft like Spider-Man and then through the walls,” explains Caine to Cox. “And then the vault is ours.”

The film is based off of true story of an April 2015 robbery of the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company. The heist was plotted and carried out almost entirely by men in their 60s and 70s stealing over $260 million in what became the largest burglary in British history. By March of this year, ten men had been arrested in connection to the robbery.

With the former Alfred Pennyworth and current Matt Murdock preparing for the heist of a lifetime in a film recreating the notorious incident, it seems, as always, truth is stranger than fiction.

Directed by James Marsh (The Theory of Everything), King of Thieves stars Michael Caine, Michael Gambon, Charlie Cox, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, and Tom Courtenay. It is scheduled to open in theaters in the United Kingdom on September 24.

‘Operation Finale’ Trailer: Oscar Isaac Hunts Nazis

by Chris Evangelista

operation finale trailer

A tense, and final, Operation Finale trailer presents the true story of the Mossad’s hunt for, and capture of, Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann. Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley star, and based on this trailer, both of them are acting their heads off, to the point that it might end up giving you anxiety. Watch the Operation Finale trailer below.

Operation Finale Trailer

In the 1960s, Israeli agents traveled to Argentina, where many Nazis had fled after World War II. They had one specific target in mind: Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi officer who was in charge of the mass deportation of Jews to concentration camps. The agents captured Eichmann, and then had to deal with the problem of smuggling him out of Argentina to stand trial in Israel.

This true story gets the big screen treatment in Operation Finale, an intense new thriller from director Chris Weitz. Weitz seems like an odd fit for this subject matter – his previous directing credits include Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Golden Compass and the first American Pie film. He also co-wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While those credits might not suggest a film of this nature, this trailer looks promising.

At the very least, Operation Finale is going to be a showcase for Oscar Isaac, playing Mossad agent Peter Malkin, and Ben Kingsley, playing Eichmann. The subject matter, and the performances, suggest the type of movie studios love to push towards the end of the year for awards season. But Operation Finale is arriving at the tail-end of summer. Make of that what you will.

Operation Finale also stars Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi and Pêpê Rapazote, with a script from first-time screenwriter Matthew Orton.

Operation Finale opens on August 29, 2018.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures’ razor-sharp thriller, Operation Finale, brings to life one of the most daring covert operations in modern history. Starring Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s List) and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ex Machina), the film vividly captures the ingenious and brilliantly executed mission to capture Adolf Eichmann, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust. Fifteen years after the end of World War II, acting on irrefutable evidence, a top-secret team of Israeli agents travel to Argentina where Eichmann (Kingsley) has been in hiding together with his family under an alias Ricardo Klement and execute an extremely dangerous abduction. In attempting to sneak him out of Argentina to stand trial in Israel while being pursued by the country’s right-wing forces, agent Peter Malkin (Isaac) is forced to engage Eichmann in an intense and gripping game of cat-and-mouse with life-and-death stakes.

‘Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires’: A Stop-Motion Tribute to 1980s Action and Horror [Fantasia Film Festival]

by Steven Prokopy

Chuck Steel Review

In the wake of digital animation, the art of stop-motion (or stop-frame) animation has been relegated to the furthest reaches of the animation spectrum, despite the fact that its handmade quality gives the entire production a warmth and tangible quality that is nearly impossible to capture in a computer-born creation. And while animation houses like Aardman and Laika Entertainment are still kicking and putting out a feature every few years (in addition to commercial work and the occasional short films), but even they use digital assistance to smooth out action and erase lines where they aren’t meant to be.

So imagine the sheer delight at seeing a film like Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires (courtesy of the newly created British house Animortal Studio) on the big screen using old-school stop-motion techniques that combine the feel of the artist’s fingerprints on the creation with high production value that you’d expect to get from much more established studios.

Writer/director Michael Mort spent many years working for places like Aardman (he’s credited with directing several episodes of the Shaun the Sheep television series, among other things) and learning his crafted before he created the 2013 Chuck Steel short Raging Balls of Steel Justice, which served as something of a test run for the Trampires feature. Like the short, the feature is an unapologetic tribute to ’80s-era action and horror films. The references—both subtle and not so much—tap everything from Lethal Weapon and Die Hard to Evil Dead and The Thing, complete with dated, exceedingly non-PC opinions/jokes about everything from male/female relationships to excessive police violence. While Chuck Steel (voiced by the director) is the star of the film, he’s certainly not meant to be looked at as anything but an ill-tempered, misogynistic blowhard.

Set in 1986, the story revolves around Steel during changing times. Many of his fellow officers have been seeing the department psychiatrist, the beautiful but chilly Dr. Alex Cular (Jennifer Saunders), who has turned the L.A. police force soft, in Steel’s opinion (one gag involves an officer changing the name of the squad’s Most Wanted poster to Most Misunderstood). And this shift in attitude couldn’t have come at a worst time, when the city is on alert after a series of strange disappearances of some of its high-profile citizens. The crime scenes are soaked in blood but no bodies are ever found, and usually the disappearances occur right after the victim has left a party.

When Steel goes to interview a woman who survived one of these attacks, he’s met by a seemingly insane old man, Abraham Van Rental (also voiced by Mort), who warns him that a growing army of Trampires (that’s “tramp” as in homeless people) are grabbing up these drunken partiers because they feed on the blood alcohol content of their victims, which results in a fresh crop of new Trampires, threatening to overrun the city under the control of their mysterious leader.

As an action movie, Night of the Trampires features some impressive visual moments, including deliriously paced action sequences, explosions galore, shootouts, and even a perpetually angry police captain, Jack Schitt (voiced by Mort once again), who is always threatening to fire Steel but never does because he considers him “the best goddamn cop on the force.” On the horror side of things, the movie is loaded with blood and guts and melting faces that feature a level of detail that makes it impossible not to wonder how the animators accomplished it and how long it took them. A great number of sequences will make you wonder such things, since Mort and his team don’t shy away from larger set pieces featuring crowd shots with dozens of characters in a single frame, each with unique looks and movements.

Chuck Steel

The film’s crowning achievement is a massive-scale climactic battle set at a circus, during which the Trampires disguise themselves as clowns, poised to attack revelers and take out the governor, nicknamed The Puritan (Dan Russell), who doesn’t believe in drinking and wants to reduce the hours of bars and clubs, which of course would threaten the livelihood of the bloodsuckers. Paying homage to everything from the films of Ray Harryhausen to Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the epic final sequence of Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires is pure, barely controlled mayhem, throwing in giant, unspeakably gross monsters in the mix just to add to the fun. Mort and the folks at Animortal spent nearly four years working on this, and every bit of their their blood, sweat and fingertips is on the screen.

The film’s comedic elements leave something to be desired at times, but that’s only because they seem somewhat juvenile compared to the much deeper understanding Mort gives to the action and horror aspects of the film. Even still, the humor isn’t any less mature than something like the South Park movie or Sausage Party. Night of the Trampires would slot in nicely on the midnight-movie circuit. And while I’m sure aesthetic of the film (matched perfectly by a killer synth soundtrack by Joris de Man and a handful of deep-cut heavy metal songs) would suit home viewing, ideally, this is something you’d see with a couple hundred of your nearest and dearest, like-minded cult movie fanatics in an actual theater.

The film is audacious, unashamed, sleazy and has no issues taking shots at everyone, most especially Chuck Steel himself. In a cinematic world where we’re about to get our first R-rated muppet movie, one can hope there’s a place for more than one bit of tasteless fun.

Lakeith Stanfield to Star in Prince of Cats Adaptation

by Brandon Zachary
Corey

Sounds awesome.

Lakeith Stanfield to Star in Prince of Cats Adaptation

Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You, Atlanta) is set to star as Tybalt in Prince of Cats, the Legendary Pictures adaptation of the graphic novel by Ronald Wimberly. The production company gained the film rights following a bidding war.

Prince of Cats reimagines and updates the events of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, placing Juliet’s short-tempered cousin Tybalt at the center of the story, set against the backdrop of the 1980s Brooklyn music scene. It’s been described as “the B side to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, played at an eighties block party in an NY where underground sword dueling blossomed alongside hip-hop, punk, disco, and no wave.”

Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (Beyond Beef: Jay-Z and Nas) will write the script for what’s viwed as a potential star vehicle for Stanfield, following standout roles in such projects as Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You, Dope and Straight Outta Compton.

In Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt becomes a chief rival to Mercutio and Romeo, and serves as the primary antagonist of the story. The comic, which is a slick recreation of the original  by way of The Warriors, shifs the focus to him and also manages to keep the dialogue in iambic pentameter.

iam8bit Some Assembly Required

For all you action figure collectors out there, iam8bit gallery in Los Angeles has a new exhibition you might want to check out, especially if you’re into the kind of action figures that haven’t been produced before.

Artist Dano Brown, who has been obsessed with customized action figures since he was a kid, put together an exhibition of 40 original action figures inspired by movies, television and video games. There are figures from Dumb & Dumber, The Big Lebowski, Forrest Gump, The Wizard, The Jerk, Little Monsters, and more.

Dano Brown gave himself an action figure profile which explains how he came to make these figures:

As a young boy, young Dano loved to doodle, paint, and build. Then one fateful day, while honing his skills as an artist, he was bitten by a bug. But not just any bug – a radioactive collecting bug. From that day forward, he could not help but to collect. Baseball cards, lighters, records, cheap watches – and eventually – Nintendo cartridges. Nearing the completion of the entire North American NES catalog, he dug deeper, in search of the full extent of his collecting abilities: Nintendo magazines, Nintendo books, Nintendo watches, Nintendo pencils. There were few who dared challenge his collecting prowess… until something happened.

He bought what he believed were rare Nintendo action figures, but which turned out to be original figures, make from parts of G.I. Joe and other action figures from his youth. And Dano knew – that with great collecting power came great collecting responsibility. He became obsessed with making his own figures and has since dedicated his life to a most noble pursuit – a hero’s pursuit! To create any and every action figure he feels deserves to be made by never was.

These are just some of the movie-related figures that were on display and for sale at iam8bit. Most of them, which are 1 of 1, have already been sold. But there are a few still leftover from the collection that you can buy from the iam8bit online shop right here.

Apple Closing Deal for TV Rights to ‘Time Bandits’, Plans for Series

by Mary Anne Butler

It appears that Apple is in the process of closing a bid to secure the rights to turn Terry Gilliam‘s Time Bandits film into a tv series, which they are actively planning on developing.

It’s been a tough and yet awesome year for Gilliam fans, as his almost 30-year epic quest to finish and release The Man Who Killed Don Quixote came to a conclusion with the flick screening during 2018’s Cannes Film Festival despite multiple legal hurdles.

Time Bandits remains a classic of his signature style of humor and directorial style, perhaps the most mainstream and widely beloved title in his filmography (I mean, 12 Monkeys maybe had more financial success). In the original film, Kevin (Craig Warnock) is visited (or invaded, however you want to look at it) by six dwarves in possession of a map which details holes in the fabric of time. They’re thieves and adventurers, using the map to steal treasures from different historical eras.

Gilliam will be a non-writing executive producer, and we’ll of course let you know as soon as more information about this becomes available.

Maniac: Netflix Releases Teaser for Cary Fukunaga Dark Comedy Series with Jonah Hill, Emma Stone

by Ray Flook

Netflix kept the announcement machine rolling along at this summer’s Television Critics Association‘s (TCA) with our first official teaser for Maniac, the streaming service’s new 10-episode half-hour comedy series from director Cary Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, True Detective).

Based on the original 2014 Norwegian series, the series stars Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Emma Stone (La-La Land) as two strangers who meet in  very unexpected ways. Fukunaga directed the first season from a script by Patrick Somerville (The Leftovers) and will serve as series executive producer with Stone and Hill.

Set to premiere on the streaming service on September 21st, Maniac also stars Sally Field, Sonoya Mizuno (Dr. Fujita), Aaralyn Anderson (Belle Milgrim), Geoffrey Cantor (Frank), Julia Garner (Ellie), Josh Pais (Andy),  Justin Theroux (James Mantleray), Jemima Kirke, and Rob Yang (Matt Ming).

Set in a world somewhat like our own and similar to our time, Maniac tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.

Premiering August 31st on Netflix, Ozark season 2 also stars Janet McTeer, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Julia Garner, Jordana Spiro, Jason Butler Harner, Esai Morales, and Peter Mullan.

In its much-anticipated second season, Ozark continues to follow Marty Bryde and his family as they navigate the murky waters of life within a dangerous drug cartel. With Del out, the crime syndicate sends their ruthless attorney Helen Pierce to town to shake things up just as The Byrdes are finally settling in.

Marty and Wendy struggle to balance their family interests amid the escalating dangers presented by their partnerships with the power-hungry Snells, the cartel and their new deputy, Ruth Langmore, whose father Cade has been released from prison. The stakes are even higher than before and The Byrdes soon realize they have to go all in before they can get out.

OZARK is produced by Bateman’s Aggregate in association with Media Rights Capital for Netflix.

In an interview with Deadline Hollywood from June 2018, Linney addressed whether Ozark‘s socio-political themes were purposefully meant to reflect our country’s current environment:

“No, the show was developed and written before the election. So, I think, once President Trump took office, it took on a different significance in a way that we didn’t see coming. But it certainly has touched on something that is in the air, or is current. I think people are attracted to it for a variety of different reasons. One of them is just the inherent political world that we’re living in right now.

I think so much of it is about identity. Who are you? What do you believe? What do you do? What are your ethics? What are you striving for? What’s important to you? What are your priorities? Where do you cut corners, where do you not? Who are we? I think it ultimately points to the questions a lot of Americans are asking themselves, on both sides of any issue. What do I believe in and what do I stand for and does that affect my actions? So I think it sort of does go into that world a bit.”
