‘Birdman’ Posters Put the Film’s Hero in Ten North American Cities

by Russ Fischer

Birdman Posters

Birdman, the new film from Alejandro González Iñárritu, opens limited on October 17. Then we’ll see Michael Keaton as an actor who fears that his image may be permanently tied to one character, the hero Birdman. As he struggles to mount a new play, all his anxieties play upon his character in dramatic fashion. Now a series of great Birdman posters places the hero himself in watchful positions on landmarks from cities across the United States (and, briefly, Canada). See them all below.

Badass Digest has these posters. Next week there will be a chance to win a physical run of the entire set.

BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) — famous for portraying an iconic superhero — as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

The Poster That Made An Entire Generation Obsessed With Fly Vomit

The Poster That Made An Entire Generation Obsessed With Fly Vomit

Once upon a time, this public service poster about not letting flies land on your food was everywhere in the U.K.. It's mostly huge blocks of text, with just a tiny black-and-white image at the bottom... and it's completely revolting.

Bill Murray Has A 1-800 Number To Call In Lieu Of A Casting Agent

by Penn Collins

Bill Murray has basically made a second career out of being an eccentric whimsical celebrity in addition to being a revered comedic and dramatic actor. And at the heart of his reputation as a quirky dude lies the rumor that he doesn’t have a casting agent, and if you want to offer him a part, you call his 1-800 number. (No, we don’t have the number. And if we did, we wouldn’t share it with you.)

The story is true, and the number exists.

It has been verified twice publicly by Ted Melfi, the casting director who got Murray to sign on for the upcoming St. Vincent, which hits theaters October 24th. According to Melfi, who spoke about this to the Wall Street Journal and USA Today, separately, the number leads to a recorded “leave a message”-message, to which he left several…messages. Unreturned.

Until one day, he got a call from Murray’s attorney, then from Murray himself.

After a road trip to Murray’s home to San Diego, Murray said to Melfi, “We should do this. Let’s make a movie.”

And that was that. If only life was that simple all the time. At the very least, you could save 10% of your gross by not having to hire an agent. If anyone DOES have Murray’s 800-number, shoot it our way. He would really fit in Screen Junkies well as a guest columnist.

‘The Flash’ Enjoys Most Successful Debut For A CW Show In 5 Years

by Penn Collins

The seemingly boundless marketing campaign for CWs The Flash has paid off in a way that the show hasn’t seen in half a decade. The superhero high school origin story, so similar to countless other superhero origin stories, came in second only to The Voice in adults under 35.

It’s sort of funny to imagine adults over 35 making CW‘s The Flash appointment television, but if The Voice is the most popular show in that timeslot, than it’s pretty clear I don’t understand how television ratings work.

So if you had initially just tossed this show in the big pile labeled, “comic book spinoffs,” you can leave it there, but know that a lot of other people are tuning in, so you might be forced to stay current on the office water cooler Flash gossip.

Cause The Flash is the new Breaking Bad.

‘Archer’ Drops Its ‘ISIS’ Acronym, Because, Well, You Know…

by Penn Collins

What started as just a cute and pronounceable acronym that existed only in the Archer universe has become a pretty polarizing and upsetting name in the real world. For that reason, the producers of Archer have decided not to go on some crusade about how they were there first, and will drop the show’s ISIS entity immediately.

Smart move. The word ISIS isn’t crucial to the story, and it just seems like this fix will allow the producers to just put this behind them and get on with being funny.

The show’s producers said they’ll deal with the name change in a “very smart and subtle way” in the first episode. So it will be acknowledged within the show, rather than just have all the characters showing up at a different department name for no reason in the season premiere.

The voice actors have re-recorded some of their lines to avoid any mention of ISIS in this season, as well, so it’s clear that the show is nipping this thing in the bud.

Street Fighter: Angry Goat Edition

by John Farrier
Corey

Worth it.

It's not Goat Simulator, but an even more realistic game set in the Street Fighter universe. Insert two quarters to play. I recommend Angry Goat vs. Chun-Li for the most vigorous gameplay experience.

It's inspired by footage of an aggressive goat in Londrina, Brazil. Who should play the goat in the movie version of this game?

25 Must-See Movies of 2015

by Lisa Marcus
Corey

Some really good stuff (I hope).

Den of Geek assembled a list of 25 must-see movies to be released in 2015. While "must see" is subjective for everyone, there are a number of enticing looking films on their list. One example that is eagerly anticipated by many is Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller is once again directing. Since the last we saw of the franchise was in 1985, a new film is long overdue, as well as exciting, considering the advances in special effects since the eighties. The trailer (below), shown at San Diego Comic Con 2014, made a splash and raised the hype bar. I hope this one meets fans' expectations. Tom Hardy is starring; Nicholas Hoult and Charlize Theron are supporting. The movie hits theaters May 15, 2015.

Newswire: Childish Gambino drops a two-part mixtape, collaborates with Jaden Smith

by Andrea Battleground

Despite summer rumors that Childish Gambino’s next “surprise” project would be a joint EP with Chicago’s Chance The Rapper, Gambino has instead dropped a two-part mixtape today. The first part, titled STN MTN (a reference to Donald Glover’s Georgia hometown), features 11 tracks with song titles that include “No Fucks Given” and “AssShots” and guest verses from up-and-comers Kari Faux and Young Scooter. STN MTN has already been made available for download, but the second part, an EP called Kauai, will reportedly be available later today and will feature famous-person progeny Jaden Smith performing under the name “The Boy.”

Great Job, Internet!: Enter the explosive world of Michael Bay GIFs

by Katie Rife

Reddit communities can be extremely specific, but the r/michaelbaygifs subreddit is universal. Who wouldn’t be blown away by a group dedicated to planting cluster bombs of explosive Michael Bay-related GIFs and then detonating them all over the Internet? (Sorry, couldn’t help it.) Just to be clear, these gifs don’t come from actual Michael Bay movies—they just take inspiration from the Transformers director’s well-documented obsession with making things go boom (and occasionally from his pal J.J. Abrams). But watching cats (or a gorilla on a bike, or the subreddit itself) blow up into flaming CGI shrapnel has the same entertainment value as an average Michael Bay movie—with approximately the same amount of plot.

Newswire: Surprise! There’s a new Homestar Runner cartoon

by Marah Eakin

Earlier this summer, the fine people behind Homestar Runner teased a revival, although they didn’t really announce when or how the popular web cartoon would make its triumphant return. But today’s release of “Fisheye Lens” made all that a little more clear (and bulbous). “Fisheye Lens” is a new “no. 1 jam” from Strong Bad, with some choice accompaniment from Coach Z—aping both rap videos in general and Beastie Boys clips in particular, the video is both smart and funny, at least until Homestar manages to turn the whole gang into a Dixieland jazz band. That darn Homestar!

There’s no word on when, how, or even if more Homestar Runner clips will be birthed unto the world, but it’s probably fair to wait with bated breath all the same.

Great Job, Internet!: Take a moment to savor the stunning movie posters of Grzegorz Domaradzki

by Joe Blevins
Corey

Bought his True Romance poster. He is awesome.

“Movie posters?” a cynic might scoff. “They’re a dying art form. Nobody even bothers doing illustrations anymore. Nowadays, it’s all that floating-head, generic crap which has been photoshopped to within an inch of its life.” A visit to the lobby of the local cineplex or the DVD department at Target might confirm those pessimistic beliefs. Such a cynic, however, should be introduced with all deliberate speed to the work of Grzegorz “Gabz” Domaradzki. The name? Admittedly difficult to remember. The work? Equally difficult to forget. Zach Tutor’s contemporary art blog Supersonic has recently spotlighted this illustrator’s lovingly-rendered, labor-intensive work with a gallery of his movie posters for such violence-heavy titles as Fargo, Predator, The Warriors, and, uh, The Mask Of Zorro. Sure. Why not?

In sharp contrast to the anonymous, assembly-line movie posters in common usage today, Domaradzki’s work is personal and distinctive, favoring washed-out ...

What's On Tonight: The Flash is ready to zoom its way into your superhero-loving hearts

by Alasdair Wilkins

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Tuesday, October 7. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Flash (The CW, 8 p.m.): After two years of relatively restrained superheroics on Arrow—and “relatively” is doing some serious load bearing there, as anyone who saw the second season can attest—The CW is ready to embrace the full superpowered craziness of the DC Universe with this spin-off series about Barry Allen, Central City’s own scarlet speedster. Much like how Barry debuted on Arrow before moving over to his own show, regular Arrow reviewer Alasdair Wilkins gave his thoughts on the pilot before handing things over to Scott von Doviak to handle the week-to-week coverage. The series isn’t quite where it needs to be just yet, but its first episode is plenty of fun, and, if Arrow’s incredible growth is any indication, it’s ...

Newswire: Foo Fighters to have weeklong residency on The Late Show With David Letterman

by Alex McCown

Dave Grohl has apparently decided that being a guest talk-show host is not the best use of his time on late-night television. The musical multi-hyphenate (actor, director, Carrie re-enactor) will return to nighttime TV, but this time with Foo Fighters in tow.

Taking a cue from Justin Timberlake, Foo Fighters will be doing a weeklong residency on The Late Show With David Letterman, performing as musical guests the entire week of October 13-17. The final date of the band’s residency will also see the premiere of Grohl’s new docu-series, Sonic Highways, which details the recording of the band’s most recent album of the same name. It was recorded in eight different cities, presumably in an effort to see if spending days on end cooped up with the same five guys gets less stultifying when you change the wallpaper.

Newswire: The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret will return for a post-apocalyptic third season

by Josh Modell
Corey

Yes. I enjoy this show.

David Cross’ underrated 12-episode series The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret ends with nuclear holocaust. The title character—played by Cross—defects to North Korea, where he’s put in charge of their nuclear program and blows up the world. Cross told The A.V. Club back in 2012 that the show wouldn’t continue beyond its initially conceived arc, both because of that inconvenient plot point and because he didn’t want to spend nine months alone in London filming again. (“But it’s a moot point because there’s not going to be a third season because the story is done,” he also said.) But apparently we’re never saying never, because IFC just announced that the show would return with six new episodes in 2015, and not with any kind of prequel fake-out, either: It will be “picking up where the second season left off when ...

Denis Leary Will Try To Combine Hockey And Comedy For An IFC Series

by Penn Collins

If I told you that there was a comedy coming to IFC called Uncle Chubby’s, do you think that might be something you’d be interested in? I bet it is. If I told you that Uncle Chubby’s was the brainchild of Denis Leary and was about ice hockey, would you still be interested then?

Yeah, I thought I might lose you on that.

Nonetheless, IFC thinks that a few people will be interested in the series, which is actually just being produced under Leary’s banner, but won’t star him, since he’ll be on Sex, Drugs, and Rock n’ Roll playing a washed-up rocker on FX.

Uncle Chubby’s will follow some folks as they try to form a hockey team. This report doesn’t say it will take place in New England, but come on. We’re not stupid. It’s a Denis Leary project about hockey.
