Kickstarting Hacker Scouts' hackerspace for kids

by Cory Doctorow
Berglaug

um... like... we were looking at these JUST YESTERDAY!!

Samantha Cook sez, "Hacker Scouts, a nonprofit organization based in Oakland CA, has launched a Kickstarter to fund a new hackerspace designed for kids and their families. Due to the increase in demand for their programs, Hacker Scouts is working with local partners to build a space that is practical and exciting where they can run classes and workshops, support outreach programs to Oakland's diverse community, and continue to prototype programs and activities that they release open source to the global community. Hacker Scouts has been successfully bringing STEAM Education and real, relevant skill building for over a year and have grown from one program in Oakland to over 30 programs all over the US. In order to continue the high level of individualized learning and mentorship, they need a space that matches their growth. Please support Hacker Scouts by donating and/or sharing this project. More information can be found on the Hacker Scouts website and on our Kickstarter page."

Hacker Scouts got written up here recently when the Boy Scouts of America threatened to sue them over the use of the word "scouts" in their name.

If funded your support will give our families access to equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters and fund low cost classes in everything from robotics to woodworking to programming, and together we will fulfill a larger mission of providing a new kind of education to as many kids as we can.

This will be a place to educate teachers and mentors so they can join us in our work to create a generation of creative innovators who know how to build with their hands, adapt new technology, and value sustainability. We are building a place for kids and their families to experiment, ask questions, build confidence, think big and create BIG.

(Thanks, Samantha!)

Completely heartbreaking medical case report

by Maggie Koerth-Baker
Berglaug

most evillest imbecile disgraceful parental units! uck. there NEEDS to be a test before people breed.

A 3-year-old girl enters a hospital with severe Vitamin A deficiency and micronutrient malnutrition. The cause: Her parents had self-diagnosed her with so many food allergies that her entire diet consisted of chickpea milk, bison meat, and salicylate-free vegetables. (Which, basically, means very few vegetables.) An older sister on the same diet had developed scurvy and rickets. The case report is technical and dry, but the story you can see happening underneath is just heart-wrenching. Especially the point at which the parents refuse Vitamin A supplementation and the doctors have to call child protective services.

Over 200,000 People Apply to Become First Colonizers of Mars

by Charley Cameron
Berglaug

yeeeeah... i don't know about being the FIRST to go there. sounds a bit sketch to me.

mars one, mars colony, Bas Lansdorp, live on mars, martian life

The numbers are in, and in just six months a phenomenal 202,586 people have applied to join the very first Mars colony. Frequently dubbed a “suicide mission,” the $4 billion Mars One non-profit venture plans to send a team of four individuals on what may very well be a one way trip to the red planet. The U.S. formed the most enthusiastic applicant pool (24 percent), while other applicants came from another 139 countries.

Nomad’s Phytology Medicinal Garden Project Highlights the Overlooked Healing Properties of Our Urban Environment

The high-rise blocks and grubby victorian streets in London’s East End accommodate a culturally rich and varied population, but not so much in the way of biodiversity. The Phytology project, by arts commissioning organization Nomad, will create a medicinal garden in Bethnal Green. Artists and botanists are working together to change perceptions of the range of flora found on derelict urban sites, by encouraging people to use these plants to improve their health.

EnerGaia Grows Algae for Eating on Rooftops in Bangkok

by Tafline Laylin
Berglaug

OMNOM... pollution nom?

EnerGaia, Spirulina, algae, green algae, incas, edible algae, superfood, botanical, bangkok rooftops, thailand, meat alternatives, protein for vegans and vegetarians, health food, rooftop farming, urban farming

Spirulina was a healthy green snack that the Incas used to enjoy, and now the edible algae is grown on Bangkok rooftops as a nutritious alternative to meat protein. EnerGaia representatives told AFP that rooftops are an excellent venue for growing the algae because the high temperatures and constant sunlight helps it to grow. And grow it does. While one kilogram of beef requires six months to turn into protein, just one week is all the spirulina needs.

burst tomato galette with corn and zucchini

by deb
Berglaug

WANT!
we can skip the tomatoes, i'm sure... we can just use something else.. like olives?

tomato, corn and zucchini galette

I have a long history of spectacular tomato tart failures. There was the one that enchanted me on TV a decade ago, with a parmesan crust, bacon, fine breadcrumbs and roasted garlic, that — several hours of work later — ended up tasting metallic and clashy against the acidic tomatoes. There was the tomato tarte tatin flop from a fancy French chef, for which I have only myself to blame. And two summers ago, there was an heirloom tomato galette, with colors like a rainbow, that fell apart before we ate it. The problem more often than not is a basic one: tomatoes are very wet and tart crusts need to stay fairly dry. But this has never stopped me from trying again, and I’m glad, because it led me to this.

a pretty mix of tiny tomatoes
diced zucchini

Sort of. This too spun from a disaster, a gnocchi failure last week that involved these same fixings. But we were so in love with the combination — lightly charred and slumped cherry tomatoes, sauteed zucchini, crunchy sweet corn, scallions and parmesan that I’ve become convinced it should be applied to everything this month from pasta to farro to omelets.

Soul DustI almost forgot to share this recipe. My bad. I’m always looking for a good dry rub and then I caught the last few minutes of an old Triple D episode (Guy Fieri), where the owner of a BBQ joint was making something that looked like the perfect rub to me. He then went ahead and messed it up by drizzling way too much honey on his ribs, but that...

Amazing ERO Concrete-Recycling Robot Can Erase Entire Buildings

by Lidija Grozdanic
Berglaug

that is crazy awesome

ERO Concrete Recycling Robot, Omer Haciomeroglu, concrete recycling, demolition robot, building material recycling, concrete reuse, energy-efficient building demolition, waste-free demolition, rebar reuse

Demolition is a messy business—not only does the process require heavy machinery and produce clouds of dust, but it also results in giant piles of rubble that often head straight for the landfill. Omer Haciomeroglu, a student at Sweden’s Umeå Institute of Design has designed Ero – a robot that recycles concrete in an energy-efficient manner and separates it from rebar and other debris on the spot. The project won the 2013 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the Student Designs category.

Here’s A Game of Thrones Nursery Mobile to Captivate Your Little Khal or Khaleesi

by Isabella Kapur
Berglaug

they must start learning young!

This Game of Thrones mobile is perfect to teach Stark babies that “Winter is Coming” and to ensure that Tyrell tykes are “Growing Strong.”  I’m not so sure if “Fire and Blood” is the best combination for a nursery though. At least Etsy seller LullabyMobiles has made the direwolves, dragons, and krakens a lot cuter than they are frightening.  Check out close ups of all the stitched sigils after the jump.

Above you can see houses Lannister, Baratheon, Stark, and Targaryan, and then houses Arryn, Martell, Tyrell, and Greyjoy.

WILD: sweet picture book about a feral child who won't be tamed

by Cory Doctorow
Berglaug

i would have loved this as a kid!

Emily Hughes's Wild is the latest children's picture book from Flying Eye Books, the kids' imprint of London's NoBrow, who are fast becoming my favorite kids' publisher, and are seemingly incapable of publishing a dud. Wild is Hughes's debut book, and it tells the story of a nameless feral girl who is reared by the creatures of the woods. The bird teaches her to talk, the bear teaches her to eat, the fox teaches her to play. She is perfectly happy. But then she is discovered by the family of an eminent psychologist, who brings her home to tame and civilize her. This is a lost cause, and makes everyone -- especially the girl -- miserable. But the story has a happy ending: the girl absolutely destroys her adoptive family's home and escapes back into the woods on the family dog's back, naked as a jaybird and grinning like a fool. Everyone agrees this is for the best.

There's almost no words in this book -- the story is told with lush, expressive, hilarious paintings, often in two-page spreads. My daughter loved every one of them, especially the insane, action-packed ones, like where the girl learned to play from the fox, or where she trashed the civilized house. For all the cheerful anarchy in this, there's no real menace or darkness -- it's as sweetly beautiful and wild as its protagonist.

Wild is out in the UK now, and comes out in the USA on September 10. Visit the Flying Eye site for more art previews.

Wild

My knowledge of subatomic particles is… let’s just say “lacking.” So I’ll let creator Virtox explain the science behind their magnificent line of 3D printed jewelry:

Ever since I first learned about subatomic particles and their spiral movements in magnetic fields, I could not help but be inspired. The different charges, masses and speeds determine the trajectories and create these astounding images in bubble chambers. With the arrival of accessible 3d printing, I got to work to capture this beauty in jewelry. I wrote a piece of software that would trace possible (and impossible) orbits and trajectories in 3 dimensions.

After partnering with MixeeLabs, Quark Jewelry was born. You can check out more of the (gorgeous) pieces behind the cut.

Science, man. Science.

It only took a few thousand years, but someone has finally reinvented the wheel—and it actually works better than the original. Skateboarder David Patrick’s crazy SharkWheel was discovered by chance while he was creating a cube out of six soft pieces of piping. Patrick dropped the cube by accident, and to his amazement, the piece started rolling and it didn’t stop.

rhubarb cream cheese hand pies

by deb
Berglaug

did someone say RHUBARB??!?

rhubarb cream cheese button pies

A few weeks ago, I retold the sad tale of the late rhubarb meringue tart that met its end when it slid off the plate and managed to coat nearly every part of the open fridge I’d intended to put it into with smears of curd, puffs of meringue and crust of crumbs. Rhubarb, although not to blame, and I took a break after that, and it might had continued longer had I not been haunted by an Instagram commenter (hi!) who urged me to try my hand at a rhubarb cream cheese danish. I imagined the tart pink rhubarb against a lemony slick of cheesecake, enveloped in a puff of orange-scented pastry and I could not bear it.

rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb
sugared rhubarb

However, as I began researching danish dough, my interested waned. I don’t think it will be a bad project for one day, but all of that envelope folding and yeast and butter and carefully timed steps seemed a bit much for six to eight folded pastries that wouldn’t survive beyond the breakfast meal. And certainly not when it is finally high pie season, that blissful period from May to September when we in this hemisphere are lucky enough to have more fruit than we know what to do with.

On Claire’s list of allergies lies corn syrup, which happens to be one of the main ingredients in packaged marshmallows, which is a bummer, or at least it WAS a bummer til I made these with honey instead of corn syrup, and the moist decadent softness of these guys is pretty unreal. The bagged kind are so dry and crusty compared to these homemade joints and I am about to motherfucking THROW DOWN on some s’mores with some of that caramel brownie chocolate I got in Germany. And I might even put PB on the graham cracker. Cause I am the boss of me and I do what I want!
